I told my mom I felt sick so she let me stay home from school that day. I still feel bad for lying to my mom, but it was so cool to see Patti back then. I still can't believe they allowed her to be on daytime TV in the 70s!
Thank people like Mike Douglas, Dick Cavett and Dinah Shore who constantly booked rock n roll acts to perform live and they did not lip sync. It was the only way you got to see your favorite bands because if you lived outside a major city, you relied on radio and magazines, Cream, Hit Parader, Circus, Trouser Press, Rock n Roll News, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Cashbox and Record World to discover and see current and new artists. That's how I discovered Patti Smith in 1974, from a small article in Hit Parader magazine when I was 14. And we would go to Indie/underground record stores to buy used and new records.
January 1977. I was 17, watching Mike Douglas, and caught this performance. I instantly became Patti's fan to this day. This show was only a week or so before she fell off the stage and broke her neck. :(
I was 16 and saw it and already had HORSES - then saw her in Philly on Mother's Day 1979 WAVE and off to Detroit she went.... then in 1996 it began again and so many more Live shows - God Bless You Fred!! (passed 11 4 1994)
"Armageddon, it's gotten." That line just popped into my head, and I searched to hear "Ask The Angels", and saw this. On the Mike Douglas Show?! I was a freshman in college, and the only one in my dorm who liked Patti. I used to blast "Ask the An gels" out the window and guys would yell, "Turn off that shite!" I saw the band live several times, but here Patti really does seem to be close to Gilda Radner's, Candy Slice.. God Bless Patty, and bandmembers here and departed. ( Richard, Jay Dee, and Ivan Kral)ve
Moooooove! In order for great art to exist, the artist must open the door that allows 1 plus 1 to equal 3. The sum of the parts must be greater than the individual parts would seem to be. Patti understands that and holds that door wide open so that she can take us through it over and over. She is the true personification of rock & roll and art. She kicks ass.

I'm older now & have retired to central florida where we have mild winters & no state income tax. in 1977 I was 21 and lived in NYC. I am first generation in this country & the first member of my family to finish college. I love the US more than most people not raised by immigrants could understand. Where I live has nothing to do with loving Patti. Like all great artists Patti Smith exists to help people understand that boundaries are man-made & have nothing to do with reality. We are all 1
I will never forget putting the TV on after school the day of this broadcast and seeing the Patti Smith Group. I missed their SNL apearance a year earlier. However I did have both "Horses" and "Radio Ethiopia" by this point. Thank you for posting this.
1975 rocked but dad took photos to maplewood photo shop same as me and i denied 1975. Thx bob dylan 4 rolling thunder overnite line by msg met nyu dude knew cbgb x sho
I lied to out of class and went to the school library to watch this on TV.

Your library had a TV?! How did youknow Patti Smith would be on? I saw Bowie do " Stay" on Dinah Shore, but it was just luck.
Patti in her prime😎✌🏽☮️🎸

I was 17 then too, but I don't recall ever watching the Mike Douglas show that year! Lucky you! Thank god for UA-cam.

Ask the angels who they're calling
Go ask the angels if they're calling to thee
Ask the angels while they're falling
Who that person could possibly be
And I know you got the feeling
You know, I feel it crawl across the floor
And I know it got you reeling
And honey honey the call is for war
And it's wild wild wild wild
Everybody got the feelin'
You know the feeling and it's stronger each day
Everybody wants to be reelin'
And baby baby I'll show you the way
And I know it's hard sometimes
You got a piece and hit across the sky
And I know it's hard sometimes
And world war is the battle cry
And it's wild wild wild wild
Across the country through the fields
You know I see it written across the sky
People rising from the highway
And war war is the battle cry
And it's wild wild wild wild
Armageddon, it's gotten
No savior jailer can take it from me
World ending, it's just beginning
And rock and roll is what I'm born to be
And it's wild wild wild wild
Wild wild wild wild [3x]
Ask the angels if they're starting to move
Coming in droves in from L.A
Ask the angels if they're starting to groove
Lightning as armor and it's today
It's wild wild wild wild
Wild wild wild wild [3x]
Ask The Angels why she's got such a great face

The Glamazon Club definitely
Patti had a huge set of natural knockers on that skinny body -- sexy as hell.
Either Mr. Douglas was a fan or Jane was a super-agent. She was on the show doing songs AND poetry.
Those leather jeans! 😍💓💓

Just found this song on Spotify by accident. It's a great tune and wow! does Patti do a killer job here back in '77. Wow!
Wicked. Brilliant nothing more to say. Love them to bits.

I Love Patti Smith.
That amazing tour I heard she did In 77 w/ her old compatriates the Blue Oyster Cult & also the Dictators is one show I would have killed to see!
she's not pretty + she's certainly not beautiful but she's got a great face ( to go with her great personality )
♥️
she’s the prettiest person to walk this earth
So tired of women being evaluated on their looks. Some of the most original voices in rock/music come from people who are defy convention.
Patti had a huge set of knockers on her skinny body and she was sexy as hell. You must be one of those types who goes for blonde bimbo clones.
@@claudiaweil868 Patti Smith was sexy as hell. Give me her at that age over any blonde bimbo in a magazine or movie.

I never figured out what she is chanting in this song, it always sounds like she’s chanting quaalude quaalude quaalude.
I thought she was saying "poilu, poilu, poilu". ("Hairy" in French.)
