I was a disc jockey in '79, bottom of the food chain; I got the free albums nobody else wanted. Guess what nobody else wanted: John Hiatt, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, Patti Smith. I listened to 'Wave' and couldn't stop playing it. Wow. Thanks for this video (and others).
She's just totally incredible in all ways. Was then and still is. I love the crowd control: "Just quit acting like aholes and settle the f down!" Ha, have to love it!
Patti is like Keith Richards… one of the best rock stars ever. Some singers/ musicians have it some don’t. Patti has always remained true to herself and her beliefs. I saw her in the very early stage of her career. Was lucky enough to be right up at the front… someone stole her scarf!
This is REALLY raw, but I absolutely LOVE IT. It really shows the raw energy which she was known for. Then the whole crowd thing - trying to crash the barrier to rush the stage. I agree - it's just amazing how she handled it directly, herself. Awesome - just an awesome artist. I don't know why the hell I never went to see her in this era, but I am kicking myself in the ass now, watching this concert. Hey - at least we can treasure that - thanks to UA-cam...
Well come to HELl. O Patti I have been involved with U PATTI for the past 45 years now I meet Robert once through this one dude that worded for CBS in Chicago back in 80s. I saw Patti Smith group In San Antonio Texas l..I was a kid.I was at a boarding school..2 days before my birthday...It was a field trip.. Awesome show..🙂
This is , no doubt, one of the best songs Patti recorded. It made me fall in love with the album "Wave". I had no idea what I was missing until I heard it back in 1981, and I love this song, Patti!
I bought her 1st album when it came out. I was working midnights pumping gas and called WRIF every night for about a month before they played her. 75-77 were really good years for music.
What an incredible performance. Thanks so much for posting. I love Patti's crowd control. Way ahead of her time. What an incredible woman. A human being in an unhuman world.
I love how the band still synchronized with Patti when she's yellin "be cool, man" "settle down, settle down, just settle the fuck down!"..now sway back to the song
I think Patti Smith has worn the same black blazer for the last 40 years! Lol :-) She still sounds friggin' raw and real, and still looks good in that blazer!
I first heard this at 3 am in the back seat of a Volkswagen Jetta in the dead of winter, somewhere between Bitburg and Düsseldorf in 1981. Two audio technicians in the front. I’d just dropped off my buddy at the airport after got deported. Had no idea who it was but the song has haunted me ever since. The way she handles that crowd. I know the kind of punks that were there. That could have gotten very dangerous. As a Catholic I love the reference to Pope John Paul 2. Patti Smith is one the most important artists and musicians of the last 40 years. She lays it all out on the fucking line.

What an incredible voice. Fan since I can't remember.... I am almost 62 and look back on mid 70's to 80's as wonderful.....
She's just totally incredible in all ways. Was then and still is.
I love the crowd control:

Control and communication are really different things. . . like love and power . . . bro
she enchanted me with dancing barefoot, I was a teenager and she was my role model. 42 years ago...
Patti always gives 100% definitely a rock and roll star👍

The magic of rock in absolute action... where is today the genesis star of the so many giants we had during those golden years???
I first saw the Patti Smith Group in Atlanta in 1976 after her first album "Horses" was released. That concert changed my life!

I was there for it in Prague and I'm damn glad I still managed to get there with the power of horses. . . Bye
That song 🤩
Great and Timeless
The instrumentals ... Something like The Doors ... Organ, Guitar, Drums 🤩🥂🎸
Patti was one of my inspirations as a teenager; to me she is the epitome of poetry and cool. Kudos.
listen to leonard cohen nd jeff bucley to continue your education ..
Dawn Fillinger Love Leonard Cohen, too :-) I've had a while to get the education :-)
Considering she was known for reciting poetry at her shows "to enlighten the filth" she's a pretty good role model in that aspect
Jill Dennis-Booth - I'm too... her music is that "sonore band" to my life when I'm teenage. She's great!! 💗
@@dawnfillinger7877 - Yes, fine ... or David Bowie, Howlin' Wolf, Doors, Chopin ... and many more!!! 👍

Wonderfull, wonderfull performance. This woman is out of this world... love forever!
I saw Miss Patti at the Backyard here in Austin back in the 90's--then I saw Joan Armatrading a few months later at the same place. I was in heaven!!
So I'm 59 and still listening and loving Patti --still on high rotation in the car !
This is , no doubt, one of the best songs Patti recorded. It made me fall in love with the album "Wave". I had no idea what I was missing until I heard it back in 1981, and I love this song, Patti!
Patti forever! Timeless. Beautiful!

Incredible Musician and Poet.
I just discovered her memoir, "Just Kids." Wonderful, and you can also hear her read it. Evocative of a time years ago.
When I was sixteen I wanted to be her in every way...I was in love with Patti ...
This song gives me a reason to live.
Grande Patti
She gives me a rejuvenated reason to live also!
What an incredible performance. Thanks so much for posting. I love Patti's crowd control. Way ahead of her time. What an incredible woman. A human being in an unhuman world.
Patty Smith doing her own crowd control--way cool.
I love how the band still synchronized with Patti when she's yellin "be cool, man" "settle down, settle down, just settle the fuck down!"..now sway back to the song

Les meilleurs, les meilleurs de toute cette époque Parisienne 90.

If Patti Smith pointed at me, personally and instructed me to be cool, I think I would simply have to be cool for the rest of my life.
I've seen Patti perform this song many times and she is just so amazing to behold.
I would be so proud to have a band like Patti's.

So happy to see Patti make public her love for Sam Shepard. There's TWO of a kind. Wounded Trojans.
RIP Ivan Král, the author of this song, died yesterday :-(
Ivan Kral forever
I'm 21. And she is my hero!! ;)
This is one of those moments when I think the poetry has subsumed the artist. But its real cool also that she addresses the idiots in the crowd.
RIP Ivan Kral...
