Surbiton railway station is a National Rail station in Surbiton, south-west London, in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The station is managed and served by South Western Railway, and is in Travelcard Zone 6. It is 12 miles 3 chains (19.4 km) from London Waterloo[note 1] and is situated between Berrylands and Esher on the main line. It has been considered one of the finest modernist stations in Great Britain[3] and is a Grade II listed building.
Great video! 😄 Looks you saw everything SWR has to offer at Surbiton! Nice to see the 455/456s before they go and the 158/159s sound amazing at speed.👌
The driver on 2L46 got you. That was a good twitch when he/she sounded the horn. Certainly brings back memories. I remember the days of the 73s, 74s, 33s on mail, newspaper, parcels and boat trains. Surbiton is one of the best (in my opinion) stations. Just love the art-deco style. Likewise I like the stations on my old home line, the Chessington branch. Just a shame they've been left to look so shabby. Still a reasonable variety of classes pass Surbiton, and nice to see the expresses belting through. Interesting to see a number of services made up of two 456s, I wonder if they have problems with the 455s Vossloh Kiepe AC traction equipment after their refit? Would have been nice if the 442 had been returned to traffic instead of ending up in the scrap yard. Nice video work.
It was damn loud! I was hoping for a 456 horn as well but it just didn’t happen. Regarding the 455 traction motors, I’m not actually sure, I would be surprised if it was any worse than the DC motors, but, then again if they were so good why hadn’t the 456s been considered? I’m too young to remember the 73s but I can imagine a day of non-stop CIGs and slamming doors. It’s a real shame about the 442s, another victim of COVID.
Used to go to Surbiton a couple of times a year to visit my gran and grandad who lived at Tolworth. Out of the station and across the road and catch the 601 trolleybus, later the 281 bus. These were the early to mid 60’s when steam was still powering the express trains from Waterloo to/from Portsmouth. These trains used to shake the platforms as they thundered through.
My initial thoughts: Before watching this video I figured the main trains would be the Class 455, Class 456, Class 458, Class 444 and Class 450s SWR Don’t do a good job with refurbishing trains, with only a few refurbished trains in the video, but I guess that’s understandable since a lot of trains are going to be leaving pretty soon when the Class 701‘s arrive. I don’t like the Class 455 and Class 456 because they’re old. This is the SWML, lots of trains to see I like the 159s, 444s, and 450s. So the passing trains and a few stopping trains. This is a VERY busy station. Often heard: “The train now approaching platform 2 doesn’t stop here.” Great video
1. the 450s and 444s are staying with SWR and most of them haven't been refurbished and 2 no this isn't actually that busy compared to Wimbledon and Clapham junction only a few stops down the line
Thanks for your feedback Ben, as you said when the 455/456s go and the 701s take over, the vast majority of the SWR fleet will be in the correct livery. I really enjoyed filming here, staff were friendly and understanding, good weather, good views, nothing to fault 😃
I have just found this video to bring back memories, after I transferred from Waterloo station, I worked at Surbiton station for a few months in late 1965. In those days the stopping electric trains were either BR or Bullied 4 Sub units, or the express Pompey units to Portsmouth. All of the West of England express passenger services passing non stop through Surbiton were either hauled by a Bullied or a BR standard class 5 steam locomotive. For some reason, at about 11 am, one down steam hauled express train each day, stopped at Surbiton, the rest thundered through at 70mph or more. Strange that GWR franchise trains are now painted in similar colours to the old green Southern livery, and southern franchise trains now painted in rainbow colours. Thank you for this video.
@@StarlifeStudios Your welcome and Thank you very much for replying to my comment. I would love if you could take a quick look at my page and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Sure. I like what your doing, I’ve never really been (or yet to be) a railway modeller. However, I like what I see on your channel. My feedback would be to keep sticking with the modelling video instead of the real life content. Your 1K subscribers (congrats!) have most likely reached you through modelling and they are likely to want more of what made them subscribe. This is evidenced by the fact your modelling videos seem to get more views overall than others. I would also recommend you make more videos about how to get into modelling and tips to get started(?) it seems like your welcome 001 video was a hit! That’s my honest feedback, have a great day Dave! 😃
Yep! Lots of fast decisions had to be made. In terms of SWR stations, it’s pretty common to get crossovers but more common the further south you go. Keeps you on your toes 😃 Thanks David.

All of them
Every single train

Do the Alton services skip Clapham junction?
Bit of a late response, but they do stop at Clapham J. (Correct me if I’m wrong, please.)
