Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are the two best science fiction movie scores. John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith are true masters.

True. But it's really the only TOS Trek film outside Final Frontier where the main story was one of exploration and seeking out new life and civilizations. Most of the rest were stories of revenge or Galactic political intrigue.

This soundtrack is absolutely incredible. Got to see it in the theater last year back when they were playing old movies, and it was worth it if only for the music. It's a more thoughtful movie in terms of overall pace - definitely not an action flick - but if you approach it as an art piece with an eye towards the design and soundtrack then it's a feast for the eyes and ears.

I was there opening weekend at 12 years old. People were clapping at the names of the actors being flashed on screen and during every introduction scene of the core cast. People were just giddy that Trek had been willed back into live action.Sure the film was a snoozefest
during the second act.But it restored Trek as a constant movie/TV franchise and pop culture fixture until 2005.
25 years was a hell of a run before things needed to be rebooted.

Wow, 1979 was such a brilliant and superb year for sci-fi films and I really like Star Trek: The Motion Picture so much. 1979 was the sci-fi film year of Alien, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Moonraker with Roger Moore, and The Black Hole with Robert Forster, I admire Alien as my absolute favorite Ridley Scott film, and I always loved Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Moonraker, and The Black Hole despite bad reviews from film critics. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a stellar start to the Star Trek Franchise, this film along with Alien both had great music scores by Jerry Goldsmith, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture had brilliant performances from William Shanter, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley.
I also really love both Moonraker and The Black Hole. Moonraker is my all time favorite Roger Moore bond film, The Black Hole is a very underappreciated sci-fi Disney film with a magnificent John Barry music score, and I will always re-watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Moonraker, and The Black Hole from 1979 over any Star Wars film made after 1983's Return of the Jedi all day anyday.

Seconded. But you probably have to admit that in 1979 seeing this onscreen was one hell of an experience. Remembering that cinema experience while hearing this theme NEARLY clears my mental palette of the even more mediocre TV series (and series and series and series) that jacked this superb theme forever afterwards. The original, 1960s Star Trek will always be my favorite. Not out to offend those who disagree. Thanks for posting this, Jedi.
