I so miss having a pork roast and sauerkraut (with a bit of brown sugar). My kids swear they had to eat it every night for a week. There was never enough leftovers for that to happen! They won’t touch it now. I recently bought sauerkraut and plan on making it with sausage - just for me for lunch.
You always have something wonderful to share with us from your kitchen! You inspire me to try new things and be a better cook. I love your tips and how you present things. Your Mom is a blessing and so much fun to watch, also! Thank you for bringing me into your kitchen family and I can’t wait to see the journey to Tennessee! We were just talking about how we would love to move there.
Thank you so much for replying right back to me she is so sweet I love watching her and y'all seem so close I'm so happy to know that I'm in my 70s myself and if I didn't see my children at least four times a year I don't know what I would do they all live a good ways from me but I just wanted to know y'all seem so close I'm happy to know that this dish is wonderful my husband is going to love it I've never seen it cook like that.
Like your recipe, I never tried it with apples and apple juice. I will make it like that sometime. Looks good! I learned this trick from my Mom, I RINSE the sauerkraut in a large fine seive before I add it with the kolbassi or smoked sausage.....Yum! Rinsing the Sauerkraut gets rid of some of the tartness and sourness...I'm from Pennsylvania Dutch ( Amish ) country. Sauerkraut, potatoes, onions, and smoked sausages ( Kolbassi ) are popular here. I am sure they cook with apples and apple juice with their Kraut....😊👍 Yum!
Thank you so much for cooking a recipe I've been searching for. Yours is the same as my mother's was but I needed reminding of how to assemble. Great work!!!
Greg, this looks so good. You are so at ease in the kitchen and I love sitting and watching. I feel like I am right there with you in your kitchen. Happy New Year, keep sharing your recipes with us.
This looks so good! I usually just throw my sausage, onion and shredded cabbage in a pan and fry it up. Really looking forward to your homesteading venture; wish you all the best with the new adventure!
Wife and I have been craving sauerkraut on brats, this looks so good!!! Think we'll make a batch with little extra kraut for the brats, I'm sure your recipe will make them great and I can't wait to try them potatoes!! Thanks for sharing. Good luck in Tennessee, great place to settle. 👍
I love sauerkraut and this way I have grew up eating so I know it’s delicious 😋 Thanks Greg for reminding me about it now I can fix it for my family and see what they think of it
This looks delicious! I’ve never had it with apples, apple juice and brown sugar but I will give it a try. I love your mom’s videos and I’m glad she is making more of them. I felt the same way about Kim Chi. My friend’s mom made it and it looked and smelled just awful. I have since acquired a taste for good Kim Chi.
Using the apple juice and apple wedges sounds like a delicious way to add an interesting flavor and texture to a Sauerkraut recipe. A great way to Sweeten the Pot a little bit 😉! Thanks for sharing.
Looks scrumptious! I have also done this with pork chops, pork roast, different sausages have even used mashed potatoes instead of chopping them. Love it, especially with the apples. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!
This looks so good, of course for a busy housewife thing come. I got everything in there but not in your order. Had to boil the potatoes & then add them. It smells good.
Hi, Greg 💕. Love this so much 🥰. No, I never did put apples in mine, but I have known people who did. I will try this next time 🥰. Sounds like Pennsylvania Dutch or German with the sauerkraut. Yes 😂🤣. My mouth was watering and my jaws were tingling! Looks so delicious 😋 We’re having major storms in Tennessee today 💥🌪
Only store bought Kraut we buy now is Aldi's Bavarian style, it doesn't have that super strong tartness that other brands have. Their red cabbage and apples is good too. Apparently this dish is actually a German NYE dinner, or with a pork roast. I didn't know till a few weeks ago. I like putting a little German mustard in ours. So yummy.
I don't like the apples in the sugar in the sauerkraut but other than that I do it about the same when I'm doing sausage and kraut. I prefer if I have it and can get it a good pork roast. But you never know much might show up at our house. Thank you for doing your Northern Roots too! I never really had any Southern Roots that I knew about but some cornbread would appear occasionally with this meal also. That may have been the West Virginia that was in the mix. Bless you Greg and Mama and all the rest of the family. Looking forward to seeing you homesteading in mid Tennessee. Think you will do well. Yeah I'm on the Browning of your sausage I like that dark brown especially if I'm going to mix it in kraut or scalloped potatoes adds loads of flavor.
Are you going to be close to your mother when you move to Tennessee? Only reason I was wondering I could not believe you had waited 7 years to see your mama and I hope you'll be closer to her that shocked me at Christmas.
Yes I will be. When she said seven years that’s how many years it has been since I went to Ohio. She has been down here to South Florida many times in the last few years

thank you for the tip on watching the kraut. I have a lot of family that came from that area in Penn. Have a great day.
If you like the kraut sour don't rinse it so much.
Looks great!
It looks so delicious Greg, I’m hungry now!! 😂 My grandma used to put apples her sauerkraut too.
So good

Happy New Year, Greg! Love that electric skillet.
Same to you!
Oh yum Greg, that looks so good! Going to have to make this week along with some hot cornbread.... Hope you have a HAPPY NEW YEAR
Happy new year Joan, have a great 2022

By the way. What brand is that Electric Skillet? It is beautiful enough to serve your meal from. .
It's from Paula Deen's line on ShopHQ. Not sure if it's still available, I bought 2 and love them.
Great recipe making it as your talking
Hope you enjoy
Oh Greg, this recipe kicks, yum. I think I'd make the mash taters. No caraway. Happy New Year.
Same to you!
I need a electric skillet. That would be handy at our cabin in the woods. This recipe looks delicious!
I love mine.
DOING THIS TONIGHT! Hopefully bratwurst will be ok.
I love sauerkraut and sausage since a kid, but I absolutely would have to cut those spots out of the potatoes! Might cook soon! Good for colon too!
I was thinking the same thing, cut the spots off 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just made! Was tasty! Sweet and sour. Only thing I did differently was using 1 tablespoon of sugar and 2 cups of sauerkraut
I'm glad you enjoyed it. The sweet and sour is my favorite part too.

Stay safe. I’ve been watching the weather and the watches. Sending prayers
This looks so good! Will be trying this real soon. Love the electric skillet. Do you recommend it?
Yes I do! I bought it on Evine when Paula Deen was on there, it was her line. I am not sure if it is still available or not, maybe on Ebay?

I've done this with sausage, hamburger, or any cut of pork.
I brown the potatoes first. More added flavor

You sweet sauerkraut with onions, sugar and or apples
LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR TENN. ADVENTURE THATS MY DREAM LOL. I LOVE FERMENTED KRAUT AND OTHER FERMENTED FOOD .
Happy New Year Lisa
@@gregscumberlachiakitchen HAPPY NEW YEARS TO YOU
Try one 12 oz bet instead of apple juice. I love it but I also use bratwurst in my recipe.
Beer
Thanks for the tip!
You should cook sauerkraut and potatoes separatly. Potatoes don't get really tender when you cook them together because of the acid in the sauerkraut.
Recipe?
If don’t like apple juice can use can of beer!
that sounds very good, I'd give it a try
👀
My iron is low
No onions please
Hi! Sent an email to you. Hope you check it out.

@@gregscumberlachiakitchen Thank you!
