As long as there are no add ons to the bill it should pass. It was a stand alone bill in the House. If the Dems screw this up there will be a lot of backlash.
I worked 31 years paid SSA on my full time & part time jobs, retired in July 2017. I had to return to work part time in order to make ends meet & avoid cause paying higher medical bills. Pass the WEP bill and give me & all the families affected our money you continue every month stealing.
Isn't is up to Senator Schumer to 'call the vote?' What is the speech about. Call the vote...now! Please! If Senator calls the vote, then he should be given full credit and the speeches can begin.
Schumer has called the vote. Since the Republican leadership will not give HR82 unanimous consent to proceed, the bill now has to go through the normal course of business. The cloture vote will now take place as soon as Tuesday, per Senate rules.
Labeling this as a “union” movement agregiously fails to describe the wide spread support of it. Many of us who are strongly advocating the elimination of this travesty, especially teachers, are anti-union!
Our Association is not a union and we do not recall anyone labelling this as a "union" movement. We're a nonprofit advocacy organization (as are all of the other retiree groups involved), which happens to represent a lot of former public employee union members. We welcome the active support of the unions - both public sector and private sector. It was also the unions that organized and paid for the rally, with the IAFF taking the lead. Without the unions, it would not have taken place.
Gene, all we are asking for is that public retirees receive the Social Security benefits that they paid for and earned - just like every other American. The only people who are "being taken advantage of" are our members.

@@massretireesassociation3689 Wrong. Public retirees signed a statement that they understood WEP and GPO before they were allowed to work. Your members "double dipping" will cost FICA paying Americans $25000/family over their lifetime.
Not sure where you came up with that, but it is factually incorrect. Three recent Congressional hearings focused on the fact that public employees were not informed about WEP/GPO when they were hired. No such statements ever existed. And our members paid their FICA tax and earned a Social Security benefit that has been taken away from them. If you are going to take the time to comment on random UA-cam posts, at least learn the facts first.

@@massretireesassociation3689 Wrong again. My job is to show you the signed document/ I have a 100% accuracy rate. I am quite familiar with the union tactics over the last 25 years. Yeah you signed the statement just before you took the oath to the constitution. Did you conveniently forget that also. Double dipping should be a felony. I want my money back from you cheaters.
Sure give the government workers that already get better than average pentions a raise and give evryone else nothing except for having their SS reduced earlier, The problem with the "Fairness Act" is that public employees get much better pentions already at an earlier age. Social security is based on the average of the best 35 years and works out to about 42% I think, but most government mentions are based on like 75% + of their HIGHEST 1 to 3 years, as I recall .Not to mention most of the contributions are made by tapayers not by the employees or private employers. this would just be a raise for some at the expense of the majority causing social security to run out sooner. They keep calling them "Public servants" as if they did'nt get paid. Most people are strugling to retire not just this group of people. The government pensions they also receive are not going to be decreased in 6 to 8 years like social security will. They knew what the deal was when they accepted those jobs, and it was taken into consideration when their salaries and pensions were negotiated.
My husband was a city fireman for 30 yrs. I would be willing to say approximately 50 % of the people on these types of jobs were never informed about WEP when they took these jobs. I have spoken to many teachers who said they were not informed till it was too late and ready to retire. If for one minute you think my husband and our family of 6 enjoyed him working 24 hr shifts and 2 other jobs on the side to put a lower middle class roof over our heads you are wrong. He never had a high paying job, but he did pay for his pension out of his pocket. He also paid into Social security for 56 yrs. Only to have it cut by 2/3's when he took it at his full retirement age of 67. By the way he is 73 now and still working part time, not by choice. I was never a stay at home mom either I worked full time for for 45 years, thank God. Because if not I would also be subject to his 2/3's cut too. His social security is based the highest 30 years of salary not no 3 or 4. My enter family has suffered from my husband's hard work and willingness to be a good provider for his family and community. Know your facts before you pass judgment. These people ask for no more than the same as you get. Their social security should have the same benefits as you.
I was a professional firefighter for 27 years. Started my firefighter's profession in 1972 at 56 hours per week for $395 per month. I had To work a second job to support my family. Paid social security for 32 years. Paid my medicare tax. I get a small city pension. They reduce my social security benefits by 2/3. Today I'm having financial hardships just to get by Some public employees do not get big pensions. Get the facts first before you make a comment about something that you do not know nothing about.
Ken, public employees in MA contribute an average of 10% of their salary into the public pension plan. The highest percent is 80%, but after a minimum of 34 years of service and age 65, with a 3-year average high. Public safety can retire early due to the nature of their jobs. The point is that our members paid for and earned their pension. They also worked in the private sector, paid into Social Security and earned a benefit that has be unfairly reduced or, in some cases, taken away entirely. That is not right. This bill corrects a longstanding wrong.
Before it's too late, help us have dignity in our retirement.
Thank you to all for working tirelessly on this issue that is a deserving right to have the social security we have paid into

If you pass this bill, you have to reform the fund because it won't last 6 months.

@@massretireesassociation3689 My only question is how much is paid into the pention by the government (Taxpayers)?
@@kennethd4645 about 3-4% of payroll for ongoing normal costs. Overtime is not pensionable in MA.
