Founded in 1968, now in its 56th year of serving all retired Massachusetts public employees, the Mass Retirees Association is widely recognized as one of the strongest independent state-wide advocacy groups. From public pensions and health insurance, to federal issues such as the Social Security Windfall Elimination Provision, Government Pension Offset and Medicare Mass Retirees leads the fight exclusively for all Massachusetts retired public employees. We are The Voice of the Retired Public Employee.
President to sign WEP/GPO repeal on Monday, 1/6
We did not plan another update for 2024, but with so much interest in the signing of HR82 and implementation of the law by Social Security we’d like to ease members’ anxiety and help answer a few common questions. The passage of HR82 is a wonderful way to end 2024, which had already proven to be a good year for retired Massachusetts public employees. With the president scheduled to sign the bill into law on Monday (1/6), the new year will be off to a very good start. However, there is a lot of work to be done here in MA in 2025. Between the COLA Commission, Post Retirement Work Task Force, and health insurance we are planning for an extremely busy year ahead.
Again, we will report to Mass Retirees members once the president signs the law and there is more information to share.
If you are a retired Massachusetts public employee reading this post and are not a member of the Mass Retirees Association, we ask that you please consider joining by clicking the link below. Repeal of the WEP/GPO laws was only possible due to the work of non-profits like Mass Retirees, organized labor, and similar organizations representing retirees across the country. The same applies to here at home in MA. Since 1968, Mass Retirees has been the Voice of the Retired Massachusetts public employee. Your retirement benefits did not come about by accident. They are largely the result of the work done by Mass Retirees over the past 56 years. Help defend and improve your retirement benefits by becoming a member today by clicking here massretirees.com/join/

While we remain cautiously optimistic that the 60-vote threshold is secure and will hold, much work remains to be done in the few days remain...

Healthcare affordability crisis looms

We are amid a healthcare affordability crisis for retirees, employees, and employers alike. It is also the message that Mass Retirees has openly shared with our members in recent years. Healthcare has become far too...

Retired public employees received very good news this week by way of the State Retirement System’s Annual Actuarial Valuation Report. Not only is the system now 72.5% funded - well on the way to meet the goal for full funding by the current 2036 deadline - but system asset gains have significantly outpaced liabilities over the past 34 years. These are not only very good signs in terms of the lo...

Major wins for retirees in final state budget
The bill is very unfair for people on social security that have no pension because social security will run out sooner and will get a 20% or higher cut. It’s running out.
Thank you Shawn and everyone involved in getting HR82 passed. It's been long overdue and without the efforts of you folks and several others around the country we'd still be getting cheated out of what is rightfully ours as tax payers. I'm very thankful for all your efforts. Not to stir the pot here but one question I have is, in the November email sent out on this bill it stated the retro was to be dated back to 01Jan23. While changing any wording in the bill would have required a complete restart to the process who, how and why was that date changed. Again I'm thankful for the effort put into getting this bill passed but find it interesting how dates were changed.
THANKYOU !!
Thank you Shawn. This is truly a Christmas miracle!
I am grateful for all individuals and groups that continued to preserve despite numerous setbacks.Getting my widow's pension will be life altering. I know that my husband's spirit is rejoicing that he can now support me in death as he did in life.
Some of us, others are ME! Teaching overseas in an international school.
Thank You So Much Shawn for your tireless support and dedication, Well Done !
I don't see any confirmation that he signed it yesterday (Monday). I'm very nervous over this signing.
There is still going to be some stupid Massachusetts workers who will call & go to Social Security offices on Monday.
Thank you for your hard work in getting this done! For all of you who are not union members please consider joining and supporting the union! It is the support of the union that got this done!
Thank you for all the support help and encouragement that you have provided! I am a lifelong Union Member
Not true!! HR 82 So ial Securty Fairness Act sent Niden on December 27, 2024. Anyone can go to Congress.gov and it shows Biden received the bill on December 2, 2024
Wonderful to share in your clear report on what great events are coming in SSA., a calm, reassurance. Thank you.
Does it matter that the last date I worked for the State was in 2013? Do I still qualify?
This injustice was under Reagan.
This is BS. I paid into SS for over 50 years and still barely surviving below the poverty line. Now these federal workers get their pension and SS? This just sounds like more liberal BS. Half of my benefit is gone the day I get it just to pay rent. I dare any congress man to live on $1150 a month.
So misinformed
The retroactive money for a year has been confirmed because it's part of the legislation...Geeez so much for the thumbs up for this video..
This horrible legacy of the Reagan Administration is finally put in the dustbin of History where it belongs.
I was in the Army 78-92 and then Federal government employee from 1994-2014 20 years of honorable service. Will this effect me as well.
My wife was a teacher for over 10 years, she passed away some years ago. I have survivor benefits along with my social security. My survivor benefit is only a part of what I currently receive. With the new HR82 bill being signed by the President will I get an increase in my social security from my survivor benefits. If True, being signed by the President on January 6, 2025 and it becomes a law.I live in Virginia
What happens if the offset came out of my federal pension and not my SS. $950 each month. I was civil service for 35 years and continued paying into SS the entire time as well as many years in the private sector.

Happy New Year 🎉
Thank you for all you do. I am from Ohio and I have been following your work on this for years. Your videos have given me hope. This will change our lives for the better and we will finally be treated fairly.
This is disgusting. Are Massachusetts public employees going to start paying into Social Security now that this law has passed?
Yes….thank you for your good work. There have been many who have kept this before the people who simply do not understand how this has affected families. 40% in my case. Forty cents on the dollar. I don’t believe it has to take long….reverse it. You sucked up the money month after month, year after year. Re-program. You have the numbers already. Pay an interim amount Now. Settle up and fine tune later… They know how much, they’ve had plenty of time to figure it.
I don’t fall under WEP or GPO , but I’m happy for everyone affected by the good news!!!
How hard would it be for Biden after the Senate passed the act to put out a statement of support.? Shows a lack of caring for the 3 million affected by the bill/ I voted for Biden and Harris but very disappointed in how he handled it
You should be disappointed by a lot that he either did or didn’t do.
WooHoo!
Hallelujah Jesus!!!
Thank you so much for the update, was really getting nervous! Happy New Year!!’
Your info concerning spousal benefits is incomplete. The 10 years of marriage rule only applies to divorce. A current spouse only has to be married at least one year and assuming a benefit on their own record does not exceed 1/2 of the spouse benefit.
Thanks for clarifying this
Dear Shawn, Many thanks to you for your update tonight as well as the ongoing excellent communication throughout this long process. I am so happy for all those affected by WEP and GPO to have this law repealed. Thank you Mass Retirees! Thank you to the lawmakers who voted to repeal. Thank you President Biden for signing the bill on January 6th.
Thank you for the great support😊
Hallelujah! I've been cheated out of my full Social Security benefits for the past 8 years! So in reality I've been donating part of my Social Security to some other retiree for the last 8 years! The Social Security Fairness Act will only compensate me for last year but at least from 2025 forward I will receive my full Social Security benefit! As for the projected shortage that will have to be fixed anyway and can be easily done by raising the cap and paying back the money stolen by Reagan decades ago!
Do you think that they will want state and local employees to start participating in social security now that there are no offsets
You folks are the best ! Thank you, for your continued efforts throughout the holiday season ! Wishing you, your family, and “CREW” , an outstanding New Year !
Thankyou for the update. In all that is going on I found different blogs that seem to confuse GPO and WEP. It sounded that people drawing SS and a NON -SS retirement from any government sources were subject to both. Only Widows and Widowers are subject to GPO and people who worked Such as I with Military retirement are subject to only WEP. So many were confused on both applying is all situations.
I worked in the private sector for more than 10 yrs and paid into FICA and then got a job in the Public Sector and paid into My pension not FICA for 25 yrs. I qualify because They cut My Social Security drastically when I retired.
Both WEP and GPO are awful. They both should never have happened. I receive a small federal pension that I got when my federal job caused me to become disabled at 32. My husband worked and paid FICA his entire career, the latter part at max rates. Fast forward 45 years to 4 years ago when my beloved husband died, I found out exactly how horrid GPO is. 66% of my federal pension is stolen from my SS survivor benefits every month. I lost our home and struggle each month.
@alexandrahenry1802 Sorry for Your loss. Though You have lost a lot, I thank Goodness it is supposed to be rectified after All these years 🙏🙏
When they made this WEP and GOP law they didn't know the impact to the low and middleclass people! Thats for sure! The public service sector have suffered. They are not exactly high paying job. Many work 2 jobs, I know of a 10 year wage freeze,as well as hiring, when some retired or moved to other jobs. I am age 78, widowed at age 52 and have been retired since 2014. Still working a part-time job.
Is there a Mss Retirement Ass in Ohio???
Is there a Mass Retirement Ass. in Ohio???
NW Ohio here 🙏🏻 ♥️ 🇺🇸
Thank you for all the information. Happy healthy new year.
Thank you for update. When my wife and I get our retro check and increase monthly payments for 2025, this will put us over the irmaa bracket. I know this is probably a good position to be in, but it puts our medicare to a higher price. You probably don't have an answer at this time, but I wonder if there's a waver for a much appreciated windfall.😮
Thank you for your support and dedication for all these years. As a widow , on a very low income, I will now breath so much easier as all our costs are continually rising in disproportion. Keep up the good work!
Happy for you sorry for your loss.Hope life going forward for you becomes a little easier.God Bless.
Same - it’s just unbelievable that we (local govt retirees) got robbed of our spousal benefit for 40 years
JOE BIDEN IS THE ONE THAT STARTED THE TAXI OF SS@@carykalscheuer6429
Let's remember to thank our representatives in Congress.
Thanks so much for helping all of us!
Thank you & Happy New Year
Why did Alabama where my SS check comes from I live in Ohio send me papers to fill out to reduce my SS this year like they do every year I have 15 days to get them sent back they reduce my check every year on wep!
My adult disabled son lost his independence, due to legal theft of $1,000.00 per month…
You’re leaving out the most egregiously damaged folks! Those on SSDI and their State Workers Comp! I am already out 70-k that I will never see , because I live and worked, in a reverse offset state( Washington)
What exactly is a reverse offset state
@ when GPO was enacted, 5 states sued and won the right to steal first, from onset of disability, to 62. Then the SSA gets to screw people. All the rest of the states let the SSA rob folks until age 62, then the state takes its turn…
