- At school, Christine had a great lesson from a teacher who said “we won’t ask permission, we’ll beg forgiveness”. This motivated her to seek out famous mentors whose words inspired her. In this talk she shares how 5 famous quotes have shaped her career.

1. "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans"
Have a direction not a plan. Because plans fail and that will discourage you.
If you pursue your dreams sometimes life finds a way of making it happen.
2. "Its supposed to be hard. If it were easy everyone would do it."
There's no prize for coming in first. All you have to do is get to the top. She climbs amount going step by step. Persevering through the pain. After her climb she and her guide were the only two to get through the climb that weekend. Take hard tasks step by step and you can get through them.
3. "The only way to do great work is to love what you do"
You need to love what you do. You need to feel like your job and your work matters. You also have to feel safe and feel like your coworkers and managers have your back.
4. "Act as if what you makes a difference. It does."
If you don't stand up for yourself nobody will. If you believe in what you do and work hard to pursue your dreams you can achieve great things whether people believe in you.
5. "It is better to beg forgiveness, than ask permission."
Bend the rules if you can. Take risks and take the consequences.

This is a brilliant talk!
The title of the speech is misleading. Most of the aspects of her talk involve some luck in finding good mentors. Indeed, she worked hard and with passion but her mentors are the key here. Early in any professional career, mentors (bosses, professors, supervisors, friends, family...) can help you build your CV, your training, your promotion, your application, your scholarships and, of course, mentors can refer you to a valuable contacts. People do not go around asking anyone to be their mentor. No way, it is just something that happens when you are in the right environment. It seems to me a quite conventional path. I expected an outlier self-made woman coming from an obscure and impoverished childhood.
This is amazing career advice, I'll definitely be trickling it down to my engineering students :) thank you Christine!

It is very hard out there. Many people are privileged but don't do anything with it. This talk does matter. When you have a direction, or starting point keep moving forward step by step even when it's hard and even when you feel like you are just treading water...it will lead to something better but you've got to keep your eyes and ears open to notice what adjustments you may need to make or choose to make in your direction and it will if you keep moving forward consciously bring you to new positivr opportunities that mold into a plan or clear pathway to your next "role" or experience in life. I am living proof oh man am I and I am still in the process of fine tuning my current direction or path...It's never ending but it's the journey that you need to make choices that maximize your enjoyment of it.

Wonderful unconventional career advice.
My key take away, "life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans."
Assess is how you choose your career. A few weeks ago I told my subscribers how to know if it is time to change careers or just a venue in the one you have. So now you know you have to change careers completely. What do you do? How do you decide? In a nutshell I advised to first list all sectors of work fields. IE Medical, social work, law enforcement, business, technology, trades. That gives you the general interest of where you want to be. For example--all business for me is out. BUT, you may love the art of the deal. Then you list the jobs in that sector. IE trades ---electrician plumber mechanic. Business--marketing, finance, stockbroker. Medical--nurse, doctor, physical therapist. This seems simple but it works. You just narrow down sector then narrow down all jobs in that sector. Then you make your plan how to get there. Most people when they want to change careers just go into panic mode. The formula above makes it simple and stress free to see what you want to do next for forty hours a week. I dont really see any utility in her advice as she was really lucky to have had a clear direction since she was a kid, that is just luck. The real challenge, for less lucky people (who are the majority in my opinion) is to be able to find the direction and struggle to get there without getting lost during the path.
As a much less lucky person than her, I think the advice is still helpful.

I found the Steve Jobs quote ""The only way to do great work is to love what you do" to be surprising to me. Not because I disagree, but because we're taught early on that work is work. You work because you have to, it's a means to an end, and it's just a part of life. Changing the narrative to work because you love what you do, gives the business person power. It's no longer about doing a job because it's necessary, but because you desire to show up and be there.

What is unconventional here? Sounds pretty mainstream.
You work for the gov age 20-21, twenty years later you got full retirement. You get a job at 22 after college work 10-20 years you get stock options or a mil, you work after highschool and can't get ahead life can be a struggle for the rest of your life. Choose your career path wisely after high school or your future at risk.
She had plenty of opportunities, most of us don't and that's the problem.
I totally get what you mean - I guess the core aspects of her talk can still apply though, while we work to create opportunities for ourselves. There's always something we can do, even if it seems tiny and unlikely to make a difference at the start.
Very true. But she did not take her opportunities for granted. However, remember that before she earned her doctorate, her direction was to be a Marketing Director, I don't think it was easy getting their either.
She put herself in places where those opportunities are available.
If theres no opportunities on your current position… you have tools such as reading and writing to move where chances are INFINITE! it’s all about perspective! Best of lucks

I was a great student at university, I studied computer science at the hebrew university of Jerusalem. unfortunately, I was forced to join the army for three years right after my graduation, today I am passed that, and wondering how to get into IT or Development after years stuck in the Israeli army. I cannot afford expensive 5k euros training courses, I am working for a low wage in a hotel, what would you recommend from here?

I don't understand why people want to do as much schooling as possible all at once. Why not spread it out? Unless you are a child coming from high school with rich or helpful parents it is easier to take less classes so that you have time to pay the bills. Be patient and actually learn what you are being taught.
