      Never grip a tailshaft tube in a vice to hold it or you may damage it. This will cause imbalance and render the shaft unserviceable.

    Just now finished replacing bearing and U-joints on my Tacoma. My truck must be an earlier version as the tabs on the bearing do go into the cross member. One of the better videos of a carrier bearing replacement! One thing I would add is to smack the driveshaft by the u joint after installing the u joint to release the tension on the part due to pressing in the joint to the shaft. Ypu are a really good technician, keep up the great work.

      Just another tip, Although possible without a bench vice it is definitely the way to do it. Esp to get the carrier bearing itself off.
      Something I should have mentioned in the video was to not tighten the vice excessively on the driveshaft to avoid denting or damaging it.

    Great video! I need to do this on my 2004 Tacoma, so I'm assuming it will be very similar. I was very intimidated by the u-joint removal/replacement part of this, but you did a great job explaining that, and I think I can tackle that now. One thing that may be an issue for me on the replacement carrier bearing (already en route to my house) is that part that sticks up on each side of the top. I have a carrier bearing drop (spacers) installed currently (to help w/ vibes after lifting the truck), and it looks like those "ledges" slide over that bracket that the bearing screws into. Thank you for taking the time to film this!

    • @Adv4x4
      @Adv4x4  2 роки тому

      Hey no problem! With a 2004 Tacoma I don’t believe you have to even take apart the ujoint itself.
      I think it’s a double Cardan joint with a flange that unbolts giving you access to the large but you need to remove to slide the flange off and remove carrier bearing itself

      @@Adv4x4 yep, I just looked, and you're absolutely right! That should make it even easier. I've had some random, violent shaking under the floorboard (no specific speeds but recently happened while on the interstate), and I'm hoping this solves the problem. There isn't a ton of play in the carrier bearing, but it can't hurt to install a new one anyway.

    Great video. Only comment I have is when you said make sure the prongs face the rear of the vehicle and then yours were pointed to the front as you described the front of the shaft right before that statement. Was that a mistake or intentional?

    Hello ADV4X4 Is there any specific Ujoint parts that you were using? Would the Dana 5-1330-1X U-Joint KIT (Premium SPL 1330) GREASEABLE can be use for 2 Gen Tacoma? Thank you.

    Have you done this replacement on a 2WD taco? Mine doesn’t have the bolted flange to the xfer case, it just slides in/out. I’m nervous about pulling it all the way out in case there is some “key” to it I need to be aware of. And it looks like I’ll have to at least top off trans fluid, any suggestion there? Thanks!

    I'm about to replace all three U-joints and the Carrier Bearing tomorrow. Is it necessary to index the nut holding the yoke?

    Great video! Dorman parts are a little questionable for me, but if it works for you, can’t argue with that. I like using OEM Toyota parts as sometimes it’s the same price as aftermarket or cheaper. To each their own.

      I’ve typically had good luck with Dorman but everyone seems to have different experiences. I do agree oem is best!

      I would check your front wheel bearings. Without being there it’s hard to diagnose for you but they are very common and prevalent at speeds you mentioned 👍🏼

    I have a 2005 tacoma with a 2.5in lift. I had my center bearing replaced 3 weeks ago. Well the mounting bolts broke off and now the drive shaft is hanging down..... The mechanic who did the job claims its the bind from leaf springs that caused the bolts to break.... Any idea what happened?????0. I never hit anything and I dont off road hard at all...Thanks

  • @legalsolutions07

    Good vid. Any chance of knocking the drive shaft out of balance when ur banging on the yoke to get the U joint caps off? I used a ball joint press for the U joint, and puller for the yoke/bearing when I replaced mine, but banging them out seems easier😊.

    • @Adv4x4
      @Adv4x4  3 роки тому

      As many of them as I’ve done like this I haven’t had any problems so I’d be willing to say you won’t have any issues! Now if you clamp the drive shaft too tight in the vice and dent it you will have vibration issues for sure.
      Either way works I prefer the hammer and socket method it’s fun, quick, and easy instead of messing with the press kits!

    The prongs need to be pointing to the back or just on the back side? B/c they look like they are actually pointing to the front. Not trying to be critical, just dont want to make any mistakes.

    Adv4x4!! I am replacing my center support bearing and u-joints right now in my 2nd Gen Tacoma. This was a huge help! Two questions.... Would you recommend putting bearing grease on the splines of the driveshaft when reinstalling? I saw that you put grease on the center support bearing part, but not the actual splines of the driveshaft? I also wanted to double check on the torque spec for the 24mm nut holding the center support and yoke in place. Is this supposed to be 134 ft-lbs to set the bearing, then backed off and final torque to 51 ft-lbs? That was what I have been reading. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    • @Adv4x4
      @Adv4x4  3 роки тому

      You can put a little grease on the splines if you wish but more importantly it being cleaned with a wire brush to get rid of any debris. Also on the torque spec I got that right off the AllData Database we use at the shop I don’t recall them saying to back it off and retorque but I will look into that.

    • @pitchforkpeasant6219
      @pitchforkpeasant6219 7 місяців тому

      @@Adv4x4it is a torque and then back off. And then retorque to specific specs per chiltons and haynes. Wish i had alldata or the like
