Hey, I'm King Arthur. I figured I should comment on the match.
I have no idea what I was thinking going for the com tower so early, I would be much better capping the city. I lost atleast 3k for no reason. In general my early game here was very below average, you pointed out how I had no idea where to move my tanks (I would move it into the center and then back), my capture game could have been better and I did not see the Neotank coming. I probably could have punished it but the element of surprise got me and I got into huge trouble. The two artillery you built in the South also did a great job assisting your push.
Honestly you should have won this game just from the early game, but then you started to make some big mistakes.
First of all you started to position your artillery very badly in the South, you even mentioned one of the times where I got to hit your 6hp Neotank for free, and that was the worst one but you also left your infantry out of range so I could get a lot of free hits with my units and it's the only reason why I didn't die immediately in the south.
However I was forced to build neotanks in the south, so I couldn't build anything in the north which led to me having to retreat as eventually all I had left was an artillery and Infantry, so even though you made mistakes you were still winning in the middle game.
But then came the middle game mistakes which allowed me to equalize and win
As you pointed out you just completely threw away the north with two very bad pushes, which I punished very well
However I will say the way I handled the South also wasnt perfect, I didn't realize we were heading to an HQ rush so I thought I had to capture the city there and so I pushed during my superpower but I just ended up getting counter attacked for even worse
You mentioned running out of vision in the north but it was actually way worse in the South for me, I could not see anything which is the main reason why I could not stop you capturing my hq
I had 3 Neo tanks and an artillery but could not see anything.
In fact it was actually impossible for me to interrupt your capture in the last turn because I did not have vision of the Infantry I would have to kill.
However my push in the north saved me because you were pretty crippled following the 2 bad pushes and you also built a very bad bomber
The third bomber you built was so bad I think it was the nail in the coffin
First of all, you built it, moved it south, then moved it into the center to interrupt a meaningless capture and then it was late to help the north so it really didn't do anything at all in terms of combat.
However what was even worse is that the turn you built it you didn't build anything in the north because you didn't have enough money, which is just devastating.
If you had built a unit there instead it would have been much harder for me to capture your HQ, in fact even if you just built an infantry your vision problems would have been much better.
Apart from that I felt very happy with my deleting Black Boat play, the first time I've actually found a use for deleting a unit.
Also the weirdly aggressive infantry attacks I did was because I needed to get my power that turn.
Finally if you built a pipe runner a turn earlier you could have actually interrupted my hq capture.
Now of course if I saw you do that I probably would have built one myself and interrupted your capture and then I think I still would have won but that would have been a funny ending because building a pipe runner is the best move there lol
Anyways this was a very fun match, probably the closest you've ever got to beating me because you had the advantage most of the time, but I just managed to close out the win.

I think just the fact that this map is huge, and as Mangs had said, lots of crucial different decision making points, making it hard to focus on each one. This makes everrything hard to keep track of, and considering AWBW is extremely slow, it amplifies the indecisions, further increases the chance of making mistakes. Did you play this game real-time?
Again, as usual, everything is visible in hindsight, but thanks a lot man, and it’s always fun to watch your, and Mangs’ battles!

This shift in the meta has also further cemented Hachi's standing as the Number 1 CO, with his reduced deployment costs often allowing him to obtain the first Neotank of the match, resulting in his inevitable victory. The small but very vocal few who disagree with the current meta, dubbed "Colin Mains", proclaim that the boy in blue is superior to the merchant, due to his even lower deployment costs. However, at TAS level, Hachi is actually able to deploy his Neotank on the same turn as Colin. And thanks to the rich kid's reduced firepower, more often than not, he loses the Neotank mirror match, and subsequently, loses the battle entirely.

Your mental state after the match is very good, everything is a learning opportunity
    Some suggestions:
There's nothing wrong with Contesting the Center, but if you're going to do it, don't half ass it. You said it yourself, there are three points of contention on this map, when that's the case you better be active on all three at once. If your forces cannot cover all three fronts it means you're overextending on one or more of them.
The first turn lander play is fine, but if you want movement economy you should try to ship two infantry at a time. As you mentioned, the Transport Copters were less valuable on the northern front because of your free lander, but that lander better be putting in work. That unit is more than a glorified infantry shuttle, by loading vehicles you can create flanking maneuvers or simply extend the mobility of your vehicles and move quickly from the top and middle sections of the map.
Your use of indirects was better than you give yourself credit. Managing their positioning is one of, if not the hardest part of aw pvp. Just never forget just how expensive Rockets are, they are usually built as the death knell for the enemies once your front lines are solid enough to guarantee their safety. And rather than thinking about how much Value units trade, it's better to think about units as whether or not they've succeeded in their jobs. Artillery succeed by destroying enemies who overextend, but they also succeed by driving enemies away from key locations to secure properties, one of those things is easy to place a numeric value for, but the other could be even more valuable in the long run. There's no rush to secure hits with indirects, remember that every quiet turn where the enemy cannot detect your indirects is another turn where they get more impatient. Once you have an econ lead, the onus is on them to make the offensive play, hopefully into your trap.
On the flip side, you needed recons. This map has mountains for infantry scouting, but they are spread out and without adequate transport support it's hard to maintain a full vision spread with just infantry alone. You don't need many of them, and they don't need to be built at the start of the match, but just remember that as your light tank count drops (as you tech into Mds or Neos) the value of recons steadily rises. As an off hand rule for myself I place a phantom 3000 funds value on a recon for each Md/Neo it is providing vision for (so for a force of 1 recon and 6 Neos, I value the recon as much as the neotanks and will protect it accordingly. I will even play into the that value for enemy forces and will sometimes make unusual sacrifices to secure recon kills.
Teching up, I think Arthur kind of got dragged into your pace when you rushed the early Neos as he started doing cranking out heavy units too, but this can get you punished very easily. On a map with 3 fronts, overloading your funds into one of them sacrifices ground elsewhere. Even when your funds break into the mid 20k range you need to keep aware of the total map state and which areas matter most (this is where the standard AW ai falls flat on its face). My default approach is that after reaching 19k+ daily funds on a 4 production map (3 factory 1 airport) my standard build is B-copter, 2 infantry, and 1 Arti/Tank/AA. The remaining funds I let pool. When my opponent reveals their hand I use pooled funds to pivot into my immediate answers, trading my infantry build slots for whatever is needed. On the average, I don't even build Md and Neos unless the map is very high funds or I'm starting up my big push
The AW Weapon Triangle of Tank B-Copter AA makes up the core of most pvp matches. I think this is where you get tripped up in matches against the top ends of the ladder when you typically don't have enough tanks or b-copters to control space and vision. Remember there's tons of ways to counter units like Mds and Neos. If you take air superiority (which is easy against Jess) B-copters are adequate for countering her neo tanks. When she responds with AA, you field more light tanks to out maneuver and neutralize them. Forcing her to match copters or reduce her tank/arti count for AAs suppresses the value of her day to day and powers. Somewhat surprisingly with Adder (and actually most COs) you can win most matches by just being tank and b-copter dominant in the early game in fog matches. I tend to find that the reason for this is that B-copters are comparatively more "tanky" than AA at roughly the same cost since they don't have to fear indirect fire (unless some psycho fields Missiles) and their place on the 'weapon triangle' gives them significant resistance to tank/md/neos, they have more units they have advantages against, which is why they tend to be more frequently produced than AA. This loops back to the Unit Count rule of thumb in that every production property should try to deploy units every turn, obviously not all maps allow for this (and deploying navy is just... dont do it) but I've won a stupidly large number of fog games by just always building b-copters and tanks every turn and just using their high mobility to take favorable trades.

Hiding a recon in a forest by the center would've been a really good idea. I think if you did that to determine when the middle was unprotected then used a T-copter and an infantry to threaten his com. tower in the build up to a push, you'd be able to both divert his resources to territory that's really uncontested and you'd be able to clobber what defenders were remaining.

"Drake player" "Mopped" I get it.
So it's an interesting idea. Really hard to say if the neotank gambit paid off. There's just an infinite amount of things that could or could not have happened. I think if you can get 1 surprise tank kill off him and then start blasting other stuff, it's worth it. If you just end up hitting infantry and he manages to avoid the neo until he gets some way to counter, I'd say it's not really worth it as you could have done the same with an AA. Tech units are really about having a centralization of power. Sometimes you want it, sometimes you don't. if your opponent can take advantage of your power being too centralized such as distracting or blocking your neotank while the opponent surges in other areas or surrounds it until an artillery can come by and destroy you (this is mostly for MD tanks though. You can't really distract neotanks because they are fast and they oneshot too much stuff), they win. If you can take advantage of their lack of centralized power, such as their tanks simply having to retreat and becoming useless, you win. That's my thought anyway.
So the artillery seems really smart. Because of your neotank, you are virtually guaranteed to take over the center, and that may give your artillery enough time to set up well.
About interrupting that cap for 1000, I'm not a fan of that one. Infantry kinda aren't just 1000 but represent factory time and also their position out there on the front line makes them more valuable than ones way back at your factory. Imagine an infantry on the enemy HQ capturing. This guy is not worth 1k in that situation. Same idea but the extent is different. If it was going to die anyway, sure it's worth it, but maybe it could have hid in some trees or something and trapped a unit.
Yeah Jess battlecopters are fine. You hardly even notice anything different about them.
So you have all these artillery and a neotank vs a bunch of tanks. One thing I'm going to be interested to see if you do is bait his tanks into your hidden artillery with your damaged tank. I feel that would be a crushing blow in the south if he takes the bait on your tank.
It's tough to truly evaluate what damage something does. Even if the neotank kills a tank, who's to say it's not worth more than 7000 if then all his other tanks have to run away in fear. You just took a ton of ground and have a wave of infantry at your ready.
So the second neotank. You do risk getting overwhelmed. Just surrounding your neotank with infantry and crap until an artillery can come by is a real threat to this type of thing, but maybe you have too much support nearby for that to work.
About the sidewinder, along with the tcopters, this may have been a good map to have been ferrying mechs around, but then again it is also kind of a big map.
I agree you may have pushed too hard in the north. You have that rocket up there in the god position, but once you start pushing you are going to lose that and that rocket is going to become trickier to use. Maybe just pushing the bottom would have been better, although your supply line is getting really long down there as well.
About the rocket in the south. The northern one is in a god position and is defending a mess of mountains and forests. In the south it's way more open with roads everywhere, A lot easier for neotanks to jump on that one so I'm worried about that. Don't worry though, if I'm wrong I will just come back and delete this part.
I'm not sure if I would generally attack neos with mechs at all, but this is a 3k unit on a city against an already damaged 22k unit on plains, so I think it's just worth it this time to shave off the 2hp.
The bombers in fog against a movement CO is certainly bold, but I agree it may be the best thing against this neotank spam.
So pushing was definitely bad. We all need to work on resisting the temptation to attack stuff in range just because we can, and think about what's going to happen next turn, lol. You're up against a movement SCOP CO with tons of built up pressure but moved the rocket onto a city. Yeah, that thing should have been in forests, and with a healthy shield of infantry around it on top of that even.
    Super interesting match though.

29:48 Why did you move the artillery to the city, Mangs? Move it closer so that it can actually have something to shoot. You got units covering it and a very juicy Neotank as a target to shoot at. Even more, the enemy won't be strong enough to break through your units to get to the Artillery in that turn. If you can just shoot it at a Neotank or even a tank, that Artillery would've earned its value.

The price is the real issue (+6K) and mangs pointed out that if md tank can be in a position to get the first strike (which is very hard on its own but with other cheaper unit saved from those 6K), it will be more cost effective than neo depending the situation

It was a very fun match to watch. You had better strategy but King Arthur had better tactics which created an interesting back and forth. Are there maps in AWBW with no bases but only predeployed units? I think it could be interesting to see you play this kind of map once in a while either against Panzergraf or against viewers. For us, it would change the formula a little bit and for you, it would be a way to focus on your tactics, which could help you improve a lot.

    • @ArkDShiggy

@@sherrdreamz7232 I think you can come up with a makeshift objective like you win if you have a unit stainding in the center of the map for three turns in a row. My main worries are balancing first turn advantage and lack of replayability but I think you can design around defensive play. I will admit tho, it sounds like a worse idea the more I think about it.

Throwing an infantry to delay a cap is generally not worth it. Specially on your weak side (the lone base side). You should value your infantry a little more, an infantry is worth the things it can do. So, rushing a contested property, if you lose the infantry most likely is a bas decision. Units are also worth by its existance. If a unit is indispensable, sacrificing it also values the effort needed to replace it, and not building the unit to wsnted

This map feels like it lends itself to offense on one side and defense on the other. Given Mangs property lead there was no reason to push up north at all. The play was definitely to build a fortress around his own HQ and and only push on the bot side. A great job by King Arthur to overcome a bad start and a nasty surprise by Mangs with the Neo Tanks.

  • @demonzabrak

If you have the inclination to answer Mangs, what would your opinion be if some of these AWBW maps had a higher base/city ratio? Like, if this map had two extra pairs of bases, one set uncontested, one set semi-contested? I personally feel like the number of unit producing buildings compared to funds only is a bit off for the game style I personally prefer.

*WARNING: Very long analysis of the match.*
You should have won this Mangs, hands down. What lost this match again for you was the same 2 problems you had on the last video you had with King Arthur:
    1) Needlessly throwing away your infantry
    2) Excessive eagerness to attack (blindly)
Yet again also, Arthur has demonstrated what you often fail to do Mangs (which is made worse by your problems), consolidating your frontline after a successful push, which Mangs refers to as Arthur bringing his units together into a big blob. He also kept the fighting close to his HQ again like before so he could quickly reinforce, which is why he didn't go hard on trying to repel Mangs' push in the south.
Like before, with his 1st problem Mangs kept throwing away his infantry to attack Arthur's infantry without really gaining ground by doing so. He should have refrained from using his infantry and pulled them back. Because of this, he had no infantry whatsoever to the north during the late game phase of their match. He had no vision which made it impossible to properly plan and maneuver for a defense, and he had no meatshields to defend his expensive units, as seen here when his rocket was nearly killed the first time it was spotted, and then eventually killed the second time it was spotted, and also his neotank getting blasted without any reliable meatshields to protect against a first-strike. With his 2nd problem, he kept attacking without reliably fortifying his frontline. He had the advantage, and he kept throwing it away with the needless aggression. The same could be said in the south. Yes he had artilleries going with the push, but again, not enough infantry to back it up. Like on Day 13, Mangs went for the capture on that city southeast of Arthur's HQ, WHY?!?!?! You had no reliable way of securing that capture, and it wasn't needed to distract any unit (as Mangs often says to excuse these meaningless capture attempts), you basically threw away an infantry that could have shielded the advance, more importantly shielded the damaged neotank repairing in the south. I sincerely believe that your thought process in the south on day 14 was you needed vision but that meant not having enough infantry to both cover the city southwest of Arthur's HQ and have enough meatshields to ensure the artillery's safety, which you could have had you not thrown away the infantry on day 13, so instead you opted to move the artillery left of the mountain, an infantry to the mountain for the vision as I've said, and an infantry below the mountain to force Arthur to a decision, would you rather kill my infantry with your neotank and attack my artillery with your tank, or attack my neotank that's on my property with your own neotank in a gamble to kill it with a single attack? The choice was obvious though.
By day 17 I was half sure Arthur would win, not unless Mangs makes up for his needless aggressive attacks that day, but then on day 19 Mangs did it again and went too aggressive, and that sealed the deal for me "He... again... haaaa. Yep, Mangs is gonna lose to Arthur again." This was more frustrating than the first match because Mangs had this in the bag, DEFINITELY. But not learning from his previous problems still cost him the match despite the eco advantage and clever early game decisions. This was still fun to watch though. Also, on day 23, Arthur didn't go for the HQ cap because he had no reliable way of protecting the infantry, and so kept his infantry in reserve (which Mangs is still bad at, the discipline of holding back for a more favorable planning/strategy later on), baited out the response to defend the HQ by sitting a medium tank/neotank in it only to die to indirects, THEN went for the HQ cap on day 24 when he knew he could reliably protect his infantry from attacks, using the B-copter to block the medium tank, sending his tank to attack the recon, to both weaken so it couldn't do anything and block the medium from going around the mountain, and another tank to cover north of the infantry, which was perfect since a medium tank only has 2 vision range and it can't one-shot a tank.

During this match, we can see that mangs is a superior player when it comes to development and adaptation. Whereas king is more careful and conservative.
I believe mangs could have one -easily- given that he made an astounding amount of mistakes and was still in the game. I think mangs has more power than he can properly control, especially when it comes to decisions under pressure. Maybe the overextension and constant pressure and pushing that he needs to do is a representation of the pressure he feels.
My lesson here is... take a chill pill man, youre gonna win with a bit more care.
