Whats also really impressive here is that StarFlash250 was #1 in every game mode at the time her hit the top. SF250 is equally good at all 3 game modes of AWBW. While Incugg I think got that award first, it adds extra to SF's pedigree. 7:41 This infantry boost puts the infantry in position to take a city 3 turns later. With more analysis with the second infantry you'll see that this boost isn't actually necessary to do that, but in a different capture phase this could actually be important so high level players often just automatically perform these boosts as they see them. I wonder if SF city skipped with these infantry specifically to justify the boost though. I've done that O.o 10:44 This is probably the mark of both player's excellent capture phases. Each side is capturing 3 contestable properties at the top left and bottom right of the map. Since recon aggression is possible here, typically the way you secure your caps is by overloading potential capping vehicles by capturing all 3 properties at the same time. One can be interrupted, sure, but not all of them and you have tank backup for early recon. 12:59 This forest is a common artillery spot on this map. GetGood needs to cover his tank, but any square he can cover from will be in vision by the tank so might as well put it in the forest regardless of whether or not SF can see it. 33:45 This contributes a decent chunk of SF's advantage. This is what is sometimes referred to as a "weak side push" which is essentially a game of fog chicken. If too many resources are devoted to the weak side your strong side gets slaughtered, but the player who invests just enough to win the front forces more reinforcements to break away from the main army giving you a relative advantage. This game is also excellent for showing why the stealth is superior to the fighter in these late game states. The fighter has to stay away until it can pick off the stealth because if it gets destroyed the stealth is free and clear to get free hits, but since hitting the stealth requires 2 tiles open (1 to reveal, 1 to hit with fighter) the stealth can be "first man into the breach" and then be surrounded by other units, especially transports/infantry that the opponent does not want to hit since they probably just took a ton of vehicle first strikes. Great game, congratulations to SF for finally reaching rank 1!
I wonder it wouldve gone if he just built a Stealth of his own, in the end the Fighter managed to get nothing done other than just being a VERY slight Stealth deterrent, so at that point he shouldve just picked a Stealth of his own imho but maybe im wrongrdzsz, idk what do u guys think?
Great to not only see the success of Starflash, but the success of Starflash's play style. Their brand of constant pressure, fearless trades, and overall eye-gouging levels of aggression makes for the best viewing and it's great to see that hyper-aggressive playstyles can still dominate the highest levels of play.
Awesome game and replay Mangs! Love to see two titans smashing heads on this map (and the OG Golden Sun soundtrack, beaaautiful). A really incredible strategic decision from StarFlash by delaying SCOP standoff around 25:25. By doing so, he appears to offer GetGood some decent trades within the central shoal area, and then counter with his COP, leaving his units on tiles that aren't easily targeted from plains (without Jake overextending) but still benefiting from the 30/10 (that positioning at 27:15!). From my understanding, this is essentially forcing Jake into a brawl using his SCOP on unfavorable terrain against powered up units, and SF retains charge for another engagement! Little things like that probably add up quite significantly at this level of play. Fantastic stuff, thank you for sharing this and GG to both!
One thing mamgs didn't mention about the stealth fighter: it has like 4 vision, so you can theoretically have it placed next to the opponents base and scout almost every unit they build. Would that be a good use for it? No, but you could do it.
Completely forgot that detail, they're they only unit in the game with exactly 4 vision aren't they? Not as good as a Recon, but fleshes out their role as a monster in Fog matches.
That was a great game, but I do have some thoughts! Spoilers ahead; I think it is very difficult to really assess if you should resign or not in fog, even if star flash's units were very far into your territory because you don't really know how much of a skeleton crew he has, especially with how well GetGood counterattacked. But MAN IS STARFLASH RELENTLESS!! I absolutely love the way Starflash plays, you can see, you can feel how his moves are more based on wits than planning, but he's also incredibly aggressive and I love that. It might not be the wisest strategy, but he always manages to get the best out of an encounter. If I were to critique something about this game, though, it would be that for too many turns they both kept butting heads with each other with nothing to win on the table. Only until the latest turns do you get to see infantry positioned in ways to threaten captures, which is pretty much the whole point of aggression in this game. I think both players would do well to consider delegating units to side property gain, especially when they already have transports built. I swear if Starflash designated a tank or a copter to just protect side infantry, he would've won so much faster.
5:00 The thing that's terrifying about Jess isn't that she doesn't need plains, although that's certainly an advantage. The the thing that's terrifying is that, like Max, Jess can use her power for one movement instead. It's enough to wall break and can be absolutely devastating. Jake simply doesn't have this threat; his regular power only really threatens extra artillery range, which is minor compared to his super the vast majority of the time.
Stealth fighters have it rough, 8 fuel per turn with only 60 max fuel means without moving it only gets 7 turns hidden without crashing. This is absolutely by design, those things would be probably infinitely too good without having to resupply every 3 turns.
What StarFlash did with his tcopter was so smart. The tcopter needs 2 days to drop an inf in the harbor in the corner, so he took advantage of this and use the tcopter to ad one movement to the oher inf. Thanks of that, on day 8 that info could stared cap the city
One of the better maps imo. Always seems to produce a good battle. Allows for front switching, there is plenty to fight for on the flanks and there are not many hiding places for artillery and copters due to a lack of mountains so it requires good wall-building and wall-breaking. The hq not being too exposed allows for more aggression, but i would prefer it if it was just a little bit more exposed. I think the best place for a hq on such a big map is more than a turn away from a base, that way someone can claim victory in the face of an opponent who does not know how to resign.
40:15 not really, he played extremely defensively, using the fog of war to his advantage, if look back you can see red constantly made the first attack, the fight is always on the side of purple. Making purple have his factories closer to the frontline and having many of his key units more hidden, while red had artillery that was ultimately therefore useless.
@Mangs Yes Mangs, I know the pain of getting attacked by a Stealth when I don't have a Fighter to respond, and my Airport is 3 turns away. It annoys me when Stealths are available and you never bother to check for them since they are banned on some maps but not others. The last time I got jumped by a Stealth was when he overextended into my HQ area with it. The funny part was that I dealt with it by boxing it in with damaged/low value units until my Fighter arrived and took it out. I still have that replay saved on my PC too.
Brilliant commentary on an amazing match, the only thing I would've wanted was a unit-purchase breakdown at the end. That's always insightful at the end of a long, even, high-powered matchup with lots of spending and powers back and forth.
He even manage to beat incuggarch max rating (1702 I think), and it's even more impressive seeing him climb this fast, knowing how few points a win grants you at this elo. He's an insanely good player, nothing but respect for the man
Especially since starflash has over double the amount of matches than incuggarch. Doesn't matter to me if he's lost many more matches in comparison, it only means he waasn't selective about his matches. Not saying anyone else was... but i'm insinuating it. Plus I get the feeling starflash might also forfeit from particularly boring matches... who knows.
I may not be the best AW player, but I'll never forget the time I defeated starflash with a victory march cause he forgot about the movement boost to infantry and turned the game around with an HQ cap lol. Probably the highlight of my AW career
The stealth fighter won on both sides, loved how StarFlash maximized the value of it and used it very well, Then I loved how GetGood found it later on and took it out soon as he spotted it. Great seeing both players strengths. This was my favorite match!
Good lord, I know you did that intentionally Starflash! Looking at his high funds rating, 1337.45. That's gotta be intentional that you're sitting at 1337 specifically hahaha.
...Near as I can tell, in terms of boxing, StarFlash is a Brawler/Infighter. Relentless aggression, so he's great against people who will meet him... But against people like Incugarch, who is more akin to an Outboxer... He'll usually lose. Still, a damned entertaining match.
Regarding the popping of powers, I mean, I'm a complete noob so maybe what I'm saying is complete bs, but I think that when the enemy has is superpower ready, that's exactly when you should try to attack, because, like, every unit that you can destroy or heavily damage before he pops his power will be one less unit he can effectively use after he pops his power. Like, imagine if we were playing against each other and you have your superpower ready, then I have the choice of either taking it and hoping to have enough units surviving for a successful counterattack, or I could take the initiative and try to destroy as many of your soon-to-be boosted units as I can possibly get so that your next attack will be significantly weaker than it otherwise would have been. So it's better to do a few cautious attacks right when the enemy has his power ready and hope to do as much damage as you possibly can without exposing any severe vulnerabilities of your own. That way, if you're lucky and find a decent enough weakspot in the enemy position you can at least slightly lessen the impact of his power (of course this only really counts for powers which mainly boost units, it does nothing against global damage powers - but even then it's a question of either attacking with full hp units or defending with damaged units). Maybe that's why both of them were so cautious about using their power in the beginning but still taking engagements, like, neither of them saw a good opportunity to destroy a majority of enemy forces with their power but they also wanted to try and weaken the enemy a bit so that the enemy power wouldn't be as devastating.
Mangs maybe you can answer this for me. If dual strike cos can be in play how come jess uses her aw2 co daily instead of her dual strike version? Wouldn’t players want her in her strongest state?
The way AWBW does it is OG Aw2 CO's uses their OG Aw2 stats DS CO's uses their DS stats Sturm is the exception, he uses his Aw1 versus stats. That's just how they decided to do it.

The fact that Starflash, a player who plays almost entirely on instinct, can not only thrive but DOMINATE in a comp. community like Advanced Wars that is filled with 6 day thinkers and turn planners is just magical to me. It's like Hungry Box dominating such a fast paced game like Smash Melee with a methodical and spacing based character like Puff.
Hey Mangs, sorry for the next question but... What kind of colorblind do you have? (I mean Blue, Red or Yellow) I bet you have some problems with yellow (becouse i see you don't have problems with Purple lightning and Orange star)
This match has both what I love and hate the most of the AW community. I love seeing top players like Starflash and Incugg play things out in the fog. I love seeing Jess (with AW2 rules) show her potential. I love seeing a Jess Neotank go ham. At the same time I hate comm towers and stealth fighters. Those two and Kindle are what I hate the most of AWDS and I hate how I can't find a match with none of those. It's funny how Kindle is nowhere near as powerful as Kanbei, but I'd rather play against the latter as Andy than against the former despite knowing who is going to crush me harder.
Whats also really impressive here is that StarFlash250 was #1 in every game mode at the time her hit the top. SF250 is equally good at all 3 game modes of AWBW. While Incugg I think got that award first, it adds extra to SF's pedigree.

32:10 Unrelated to the match, but Battle at Sea from Golden Sun The Lost Age, easily my favorite track in the series. Such an amazing bassline.
In case you didn't notice it, Starflash didn't first go for the neutral base, but for the airport.
Best advance wars player baseskips??? Breaking news.
@@notZabami he did make a transport copter from the airport turn 1, so technically he never skipped anything
Yup, the go7/kanbei opening...i use it as well
@@DeejusProductions kantbei copied it from me btw
Mangs ignoring the basecapskip from StarFlash at the beginning because he likely doesn't see it as a possibility is kinda funny to me
I was too busy talking shit
Props for the Golden Sun music. Love that game.
Of course it had to be the master yeeter.
As Deejus once said, Starflash has two modes of operation: the professional mode and the baboon mode.
yeah he's a master baboon.
His avatar should be Mojo Jojo from the powerpuff girls.
The real treat was the Golden Sun music along the way 😊❤
loving the Golden Sun music in the vid! very nostalgic for me lol.
