How To Administer Vaccines to Feline Patients

- Becky Smith CVT, VTS (Clinical Practice) explains the proper locations for administering vaccines to a cat in your clinic. Just in time for her cat's vaccination!
This patient was given his FeLV vaccine. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a virus that infects cats. FeLV depresses the immune system and can lead to persistent infection. Vaccination is highly recommended in preventing infection with FeLV.

Cat: Did I look good on camera?
You looked Purr-fect 😁
I'm only 10, but i wanna be a veterinarian so
here i am, trying to get better chances to be
one.
Good luck!
Hope your dreams come true
He's so brave
YAY! Stress free handling :) 👍
More like a calm animal that didn't need much restraint.
Straight to the point. I like it!!
He's the cutest
Thank you! Beautiful boy!
Good job. You are very good!!!
Omg!!! My cats name is Gimli too! Lol Mr Gimli actually. And I call him Gimmies as well. Too funny!! 😊💖
dammn thats a bad ass cat lol
I just need to know WHERE they do it because my kitty got 4 vaccines today and I really don't want to accidentally touch the spots where he got the shots
My 4 cats died with this disease ( From Pakistan) and I was very depressed because I adopted them when they were kitten now I will give them vaccine by myself... I learned from this tutorial
I don't think a begginer should be administering their own vaccine, you have to regulate it in its own temp. Maybe go to a vet or someone knowledgeable on keeping vaccines.
@@lexxymoo51 you don’t have to store the vaccine yourself; if it’s legal where you are to buy them yourself, you buy them the day of
U can keep the vaccines in ur freezer n remove them 5-10 mins before putting them
is there any need for alcohol swab before vaccination injection?
pls cover why injections now done on low leg (amputation from FISS) we have 2 tripods due to vaccination sarcomas from best intended preventative shots.... emotional...
I have one labour puppy what feed is best for this puppy
Do they experience any sore after vaccine?
thanks
was that injected into the muscle or under the skin? I'm still really new to this, and I've always been shown to pull up the skin to make a tent to put the needle in
Yup under skin! You’ve got it!
@WhiteSupremacistIsAnAntiWhiteFarLeftSlur how you don’t know she could be possibly be in training? I’m training currently to be a certified vet assistant and I’m watching these videos for more tips and advice on the way of doing things properly
@WhiteSupremacistIsAnAntiWhiteFarLeftSlur cause its way cheaper and easy my i got my dog all but done at tractor supply for like 20 to 50 bucks ita been a minute but it was way cheaper than the vet
So what size needle do you draw it up in? And what size to give it with again?
And do different vaccines require different size needles?
i am planning on vaccinating stray cats for Rabies, fvrcp and deworming.. the only problems is that these vaccines comes in two shots (within two weeks) and then a shot as a booster after a year, i can only manage to vaccinate with one shot because i wont be able to find the cat again because it's stray.. does it work if i vaccinate them with one shot only?? i hope you understand my question.
I've got a question: why do you draw it back a little, before plunging?
Hi! I'm a veterinary student. This is usually to make sure you see no blood to make sure you have not hit a blood vessel.
@@jennasandoli3414, ahhh, that makes perfect sense. So, I should draw back just slightly - to make sure there's no blood, then?
@@henleyst yes!
Thanks!!
Thanks for asking this question!
what are the shots given between the shoulder blades? my cat hates those and she always cries :(
It's against rabies I think.
Simonas Mažeikis Rabies is in the right rear.
That's one of the needle admissions that isn't for vaccination purposes, if so; I can't find any description of it other than feline sarcoma ( otherwise known as vaccine-associated fibrosarcoma ), which is some type of cancer that often forms between the shoulder blades.
Wouldn't call it a shot, the only needle entrance they use as you specified is for giving sub-q fluids.
@@wolfygaming7222 You can vaccinate in this area.
steemdup insulin injections
When vaccine start working in Cat's body?
It was my understanding that cats need to be tested for leukemia and be negative before receiving this vaccination. I've read that the vaccine can have negative affects on a cat if that cat already carries the disease.
My cat gets a scruff and slide. She doesn't pull back because she's already moving. Addy last she doesn't try to bite anymore.
Interesting technique!
Where can I buy the feline lukemia vaccine? I just adopted my cat, and she's a year past due for it, but I can't find any less than 25 doses of it online. Is that a vet-only vaccine or something?
As far as I know to avoid serious complication, or death, it is standard protocol for veterinarians to require a FeLV/FIV (Feline leukemia virus / feline immunodeficiency virus) negative blood test result before giving the vaccine. Hopefully she had the test and hopefully she finished the booster series already. Still, if “she’s a year past due...” and could have come in contact with the virus, don’t risk it! Contact the organization you adopted her from or see your vet.
Please! Don't give your cat the Leukemia vaccine. It's completely unnecessary. There are No Risks to Indoor cats whatsoever! If your letting your cat out to roam the streets, then you are NOT a good pet parent! There are way too many things that can happen to them! I'm a long time cat rescuer, and believe me when I tell you, I have seen alleged "nice" neighbors poison ppl's cats, take them & drive them somewhere & dump them off, hit them w/ baseball bats, kick them.. you name it! So PLEASE! Heed The Warning! & Keep your cats indoors & safe, and don't vaccinate unnecessarily! You're bombarding their immune system w/ Toxic Adjuvants & Excipients. The initial FVRCP Vaccination as a kitten is enough for life!
Question I have my kitten the 3 in one in her left hind leg. After watching this video you said the vaccine should go I her front right leg... Will this affect the vaccine?? Please help
Tina, it's fine. The injections are given in specific limbs to avoid giving multiple injections in the same site, to lessen the chance to develop vaccine induced sarcoma which can be fatal.
Also, if an animal develops a sarcoma from a vaccine, they also know which vaccine caused it.
Sarcoma is uncommon. About 1 in 10,000.
Thank you lady driver 😊🎈
My cat is 3ys old and i want to get him a new cat .. last time he got vaccinated 2yrs ago.Shold i vacc him befor getting a new cat?
A little late but yes, the only exception to that is if you know the provenance of the new animal and can prove that they are disease-free.
Nice
Why rabies should be given low in the leg?
Are all vaccines administered SC?
Esmeralda Noemi Bolanos
Some wildlife have their vaccines in treat form. Bordetella for dogs and feline leukemia vaccines are available as intranasal forms, but all injectable forms are subcutaneous. ;)
No, most cats and dogs are but kennel cough is in the nose (can also be made in the mouth or eyes but better go into the pathogen place to live)
Horses vaccines are made in the muscle and bovine some in the muscle and some in the nose too
Etc for other species
@@heidiholtz4382 camel and equine have IM vaccines, but for canine and feline and ovin and bovine most vaccines are SC
I gave my kitten intramuscular rabbies injection now what will i do is it harm my kitten .??
Plz telll
You should only vaccinate AFTER getting an exam and instructions from a vet
@@rrksk
Yes i know i always took my kitten to the vet for vaccine or any other issues this time i was a bit bussy and vet is at distance from my house so i bring vaccine rabbies and Rcp and give it intra muscular
Its all my fault i am feeling realy bad i just hope it will not harm my kittens
If any bddy have any info regard my issue plz tell
Now i am dying with tension
~ 4 months old I hope. If there’s a lump, get it aspirated fibrosarcoma would be a concern
I know they're busy, but YOU REALLY NEED A VET to give rabies vaccines because rabies vaccines can be really harmful to cats if not done properly, and they need to give your cats rabies tags by law in the United States.
It looks like intramuscular injection, not subcutanous
Venita Mada That’d be dangerous Now wouldn’t it? Takes a steady hand, and practice! They are pros.
@@heidiholtz4382 depends vaccines can often be made intramuscular but its painful
Mam tell me please is that compulsory for vaccinate our Pet cat.. What kind of Risk is involved with us if we don't vacinate..
It's quite simple. If you don't vaccinate, you risk your cat picking up these preventable diseases. It depends where you live but definitely consult your veterinarian.
The worst thing that could happen if you vaccinate him is an allergic reaction to the adjuvants in the vaccine, but, in general, the benefits of the vaccine usually far outweigh the risk of harm. Plus, Feline Lukemia Virus is very contagious and almost always lethal.
If not vaccinated youre almost guaranteed an early death.
Vaccinate her no matter the risks.
Sorry but why the different areas? Like why rabies in lower leg?
What is there is a combo😶
Leukemia- not freeze dried- lower left leg? SUBQ does not sting
FER- right front above elbow sub q
RABIES - right rear low
LEUKEMIA - not freeze dried- not sting - left rear leg low SUB Q
Does your cat need to have leukemia to get this shot or not to get it anyways?
why did she draw back on the syringe after she put it in the cat? Is she trying to inject in the bloodstream?
No, she was making sure she was NOT in a blood vessel. She drew back to make sure there was no blood flash before injecting.
Also to make sure the needle didn't penetrate to the other side too, I think.
good job ! i will study it to doing on pet , you konw chinese was crue to animal ,but zhuang nation not to do . i hop use that knowleage to helping animal.
Why are the spots so low on the limbs? Is it their specific protocol or a medical reason?
Cats are prone to getting lumps from an injection. If it spreads then the leg can be amputated to save the cat
vaccine related cancer are common in american cats....havent seen that in australia hence in america they vaccinate on the legs so if they develop cancer, its easier to amputate
I wonder why that is. Why the area differences? Do they use a different grade steel for the syringes, or are the vaccines different because of area specific disease strains?@@theunraveler
@WhiteSupremacistIsAnAntiWhiteFarLeftSlur The development of sarcomas at the injection site is not exactly common, but cats are more prone to it than other species.
@WhiteSupremacistIsAnAntiWhiteFarLeftSlur Happy to read that :) wish you and your cat the best.
Does Leukemia vaccines have side effects?
Lethargy and pain at the site of injection.
@@Chiafruity you're right. I remember my cat was lethargic for a week, I was afraid but at the end, she recovered :)
Is it okay if I gave the cat a bath after 48+ hours of vaccine?
In the clinic where I work, the doctors recommend waiting at least 10 days before subjecting the animal to any stressful process.
We inject FeLV / Rabies in tails these days
My cat hasn’t been vaccinated since he was one years old and I was 2014 so he’s eight now I’m guessing but yeah we haven’t taken him to the vet ever since then my parents think it’s fine because their cats only have been vaccinated once to get neutered and stuff
If it’s indoor it should be fine

I saw his claws come out. My cat is a battle at the vet. He'll hurt you. That's why he doens't go unless he wounded.
I have to disagree with these methods because they have a lot of pain at the injection site and it affects their ability to walk and they tend to not want to eat. We give these vaccines subcutaneous by pulling the fold of skin behind and slightly below the shoulders. Your method leaves the cat not wanting to eat and lethargic because it's painful for them to walk.
This method is recommended to be able to act in case of sarcoma at the injection site. I've never applied it personally, but it's what I was taught in vet school.
My cat screamed SO loud when he got his shot. Is that normal? It broke my heart
Yes, it's normal. It is similar to what happens with children, some of them have 0 problems getting a shot while others hate it and make a big fuss about it. I'm not saying the procedure is pain-free, but it doesn't cause immense pain either.

Wtf 101 degrees?!? That cat should be melted and boiled if he is that hot!
degrees fahrenheit?

Ohhhh sorry I don’t use dumb measurements
@@Fayrayz , but you definitely make dumb statements. 🙄
NEVER be so gullible to vaccinate your cat.
Gullible? Vaccinating isn’t gullible
