In the late 80s we adopted a female Siamese mix kitten. Since we were on a budget we took her to vaccine clinics for her boosters. Unfortunately she developed a sarcoma between her shoulder blades and had an open wound that attracted flies. One day I recalled her looking at me as if to say “What are you going to about it ?” So with great sadness I decided to ease her distress and have her put down despite her only being 11 years old.

I had a cat almost die from the rabies vaccination after she had already had a couple of rabies shots. Thankfully my vet saved her and said he would pretreat her before giving her the shot again. He said it was rare to happen.
I also had a cat going through chemo. Vet told me the rabies vaccine would kill him. He knew the cat would only live another two years at most. Sadly, the law does not work with this so I had to report him as dead to the city (you are supposed to license your cats) so that they didn't force me to kill him by vaccination.

Glad to hear your baby pulled through!
In the instance that you are unable to vaccinate your animal due to health conditions or severe reactions, routine bloodwork is done (specifically a rabies titer) to show the state and other clinics/boarding that the pet does not have an infectious disease. Your vet is supposed to document that your pet is not well enough to recieve vaccinations and report to the state.

The worst issue we had with a vaccinated cat was some lymph node swelling, but it cleared up in a few weeks. Why is it so expensive and cumbersome to do titer tests? The UK now has a new protocol wherein after the first set of vaccines, titer tests are done each year thereafter and boosters are given ONLY if the titer tests shows they need it . Wish more vets would err on the side of caution and prevention of potential side effects here in the US. The FeLV vaccine is now usually given in the tail because of the injection site sarcoma. Also request PureVax vaccines as they have fewer adjuvants, which can be the cause of the cancer. I give my cats one FVRCP and one PureVax rabies for LIFE, when they are old enough. All doing great. We need more access to reasonably priced titer tests instead of just jabbing them blindly. What are the percentages of effectiveness for each vaccine? If it's only 30%, for example, may not be worth the risk. I do know panleukopenia can be brought into a home from the outside so that is one I get ONE of--don't even think of getting another one, a booster, until at least four weeks later, per the guidelines. Some vets have told me that the shots only last two weeks and to come in then and I nearly lost a healthy cat because of that advice. Go holistic and build up the immune system with lines of products by holistic vets, like Vitality Science and Azmira for longterm more reliable health. -A longtime cat rescuer

@@MK-ih6wp It depends. I haven’t had any since I was a kid in the ‘60s and don’t plan on getting any unless my own research shows I should get some if traveling abroad. I will never get an mRNA shot fir myself or pets (they are working on a rabies mRNA jab for dogs). I will only give one FVRCP and one PureVax rabies shots to my cats, for life, if they are over six months and in great health. Panleukopenia can be brought into the house on your shoes or clothing and I have a friend who lost a cat and nearly lost another recently when somehow panleukopenia got into her home as she has not vaccinated any of her cats (the FVRCP shot).

My nearly 20 year old cat was just vaccinated against my wishes and she is now not the same. Her behvaviour has changed. She is hiding out sleeping. Sleeping is not so unusual. Hiding out is. There are other things over grooming itchy skin with dermatisis and or scale which has led to her vomiting up fur balls if you can call it that. The last one was a solid log. I've washed her 3 times now. I've never had to wash any of my cats. I washed her once in colloidal oatmeal, once with coconut oil and the last time with a cat shampoo called Aloveen recommended by the vet nurse. It has oatmeal and aloe vera. It left a strong smell on my hands so I think it might have something else in it. I fear perhaps a pesticide perhaps. Her itching seems better but not completely cleared. So I suspect that she has had a bad reaction to the vaccination. She also has a pre-existing heart condition - arrhythmia and a neuro issue with slight head tremors. She had seizures years and years ago. That was one of the reasons I took her on the first visit. I'm really devastated. And there's nothing else I can do. I'm very sad that it seems to have hastened her demise. I hope and pray that she bounces back but if she doesn't I'll have to bite the bullet when it is obvious that I must. But I'm not happy about the vaccination. And I do not think it was 3 years since her last vaccination when she was last boarded. I certainly don't want a showdown over it with the vet at such a crucial time. But it was out of order to go ahead and vaccinate her surreptitiously without my knowledge that it was being done. I specifically said on the phone before I went that I didn't want her vaccinated. I'm heartbroken. She is such an intelligent loving cat.

Her next R Vax is due soon and I’m extremely paranoid about allowing another one. She is the only one that has ever had a reaction, but it was a very costly reaction. We have a great vet who we were seeing every couple of weeks when we were losing our 22 year old. It’s now a social event going there. I’m not sure we have rabies injections as rabies is practically unknown here in the U.K. They do have to have injections if going to the continent though. I think it’s about £50 here for all the vaccines we have, but that includes the check up and the vet fitting a good quality flea collar (we're both disabled and it’s difficult for us to do.)

I guess you could say I inherited a lot of rescue cats after my mom Passed from covid19 after she went into hospital i noticed they are call sneezing and coughing most are fixed and have rabies shots but not much else. I know tractor supply has vaccines and was thinking of that but worried they are all sick. So i am planning to take the sickest one in to a low cost clinic to get tested like tomorrow and see what they say she has... The night before my moms funeral i went there to start staying at her place to help my dad out and found one of the cats had passed. We spent like 80bucks for cremation... Anyway would it be safe to assume that sonce they all have same or similar symptoms that getting one cst tested will tell me and help me figure out whata wrong with thr whole lot?

They put the vaccines for rabies and leukemia shot (or should) on the back leg flank so that if they get cancer from the shot, they can amputate the leg. If you get the rabies shot, ask for the Purevax brand which is not supposed to cause cancer. I don't know what company makes a pure leukema shot, do you? I think vets tend to over vaccinate cats. If they test negative for leukemia and they are strictly indoor you don't need the shot.

My cat got vaccinated Feline Panleukopenia and it was prescribed for another dose after one year.
    We forgot to vaccinate him.
It has been 6 months since the second dose was recommended.
Now my 3 cats died of this disease and one is infected.
Can my cat still be safe from this virus?

I used to live in a city that required annual shots for cat license/pet registration. They didn't care if your cats were indoor only.
I complied with the requirement for 1 year, and then we fled to the next town over.
I will never vaccinate them ever again. Not safe.

I didn't find out they had FeLV until one of the adoptee's contacted me that they had to put their kitten down at 8 months old. Please spay and neuter. If your cat goes out get them vaccinated for FeLV and rabies.

We wish we had been more careful about this. Needless to say our new kitten is FULLY vaccinated, and we are much better cat owners now. Awareness is key!

Thank you for all that info. Now I learned about the vaccination injection sites and will ask my vet where he plans to do them on their bodies. I recently took in a 4-5 week old runt from a feral colony that I have been taking care of for the last 4 years. He looks sickly. I'm positive if I did not intervene that he would not make it living outside. His fur did not grow in fully like his siblings and his skin has ripples/wrinkles in it. I am hoping that its simply from dehydration and malnutrition. This is the first generation of kittens from this colony that has grown familiar with me enough that the mama lets me pick up and handle her kittens without any reaction. I have him isolated in a bedroom alone so that my other 2 cats wont pick on him and also because I do not know what diseases if any that he might have yet. My vet gave me a lime dip to use on him but I have not used it yet and am simply waiting to see if proper diet and hydration will change things.
