    My only thought is that it's refreshing to watch a personal car video from someone who is clear and articulate. Very thorough and easy to follow. Concise. Keep it up thanks.

    After living with the Soundaktor for about a month, I've fallen in love with my new GTI all over again after unplugging this stupid thing thanks to your video. It was just such a pleasure to go for a drive and hear the actual engine sounds for the first time the other day. Also, I had definitely been upshifting too early in first and second a lot of the time if I wasn't paying close attention, because the stupid fake noise was tricking me into thinking the engine was working harder than it really was. I'm sure I would have adjusted in time, but why adjust to a fake engine noise rather than the actual awesome engine in the car I just bought?
    I mean, my God is this thing dumb. Just the simple act of unplugging it has made my car so much better it's kind of ridiculous.

    Thanks for showing us where it is. It took me a little more work to get the Soundaktor disconnected. I couldn't get my hands into the small space containing the device, so I pulled the cowl piece on the passenger side (which is easy once the clips are pulled). I also stroked the windshield wipers and popped the hood when they hit the top of the stroke. (They freeze when the hood isn't latched.) Lastly, I removed the 10mm nut that held the Soundaktor itself and pulled the puck sideways out of its mount. Then I had clear access to the large connector. From other videos, I learned that you can accomplish this task by pulling the small connector on the side of the puck, which is easier to access. (20/20 hindsight) I like the sound much better without the vibrator. It always sounded too rough and raspy before. It's now smooth and sweet, and you can hear the turbo whistle. I like it.

      If you still have the car, with the ignition on, just tap the wiper stalk once..essentially the just setting...the wipers will stop in their service position.

    wow I just did this mod and its crazy how different it sounds in person. through UA-cam it was hard to tell, even with head phones on. I kind of miss how burly it sounded but I'd rather hear the natural sounds than just be a big phony. I have big hands so it was a pain (especially because it's a hot day) but I just threw my whole hand in there and it was well worth it, thanks for the vid!

    There's also a smaller gray plug which seems like power. I unplugged that instead and achieved the same results. I generally liked the quiet and more natural intake and exhaust note, but I also like the noise generator to remind me when I'm "getting into it". Because of that, and at the pleading of my kids, II ended up plugging it back in. The car "sounded" slower to them w/o it. My '16 R is stock, though, so no intake or exhaust notes to offset.

    Had my R for about 3 months and it never really bothered me. Way too much vibration in most situations though so I turned it to normal via drive modes in individual. Now that it’s freezing cold here the vibrations even when turned to “normal cabin noise” are unbearable. As soon as I can feel my hands a bit better outside I’m unplugging this thing. Thanks for the video upload. I like that it’s a free mod IMO.

    Thanks! First thing I wanted to do upon driving my new 17 R (Soundaktor still there in '17) and you put me right on it!
    Only have to remove driver side 2 clips and boy are you right on the connector!
    I had a couple pair of specialy pliers involved and it's so deep back in there, it's a bear. But worth it.
    Thanks again!

    Thanks for this video, but I found it MUCH easier to just remove the sounaktor (it's just one nut) than to reach for the plug under the horn. Anyway you do it, it's good to be rid of the windshield rattle.

  • @rars0n

    Nice video! I wonder how difficult it will be to remove it entirely. I will have to find that out tomorrow.
    There's definitely a difference to be heard in your video. Thanks! To me, without it plugged in it sounds more "natural," more like what I expect to hear and more pleasing to my ears. Ever since I test drove my Mk7 last year I thought that it sounded abnormally grunty, but also too quiet. I had come across the term "Soundaktor" before but didn't know exactly what it was and had no idea this thing was standard (I thought it was a radio option, actually). I would much rather hear the sound of the turbo and the engine working properly than some fake stuff pumped into the cabin.
    Thanks again for this video! Very informative and now I have another task to do with my car tomorrow. Can't wait to hear what the car ACTUALLY sounds like!

  • @N2GChillout

    This is a great mod. For those who doubt turning it off: keep in mind this is a fake "speaker", only there to send fake vibrations towards the windscreen, and since it's driven by the electricity, it's not consistent with the real engine noise and the timing can be off. Turning it on again makes me a little car sick now, to be honest, because your mind thinks you're accelerating, when the car isn't accelerating, because of the soundaktor.
    Also, it is VERY annoying for the people you're calling on the bluetooth carkit, the overhead microphone picks up all the soundactor vibration.

    On 2016 euro-spec Golf R, you no longer need to remove the device. It can be switched completely off via driving mode selection. It's turned off on Eco mode and can be selectively switched between sport, normal and eco on individual settings. So, you can copy all settings from race mode, leaving engine sound on eco. Personally, I switched bend lighting to eco as well, so that corner lighting doesn't distract me. Besides I kinda like how soundaktor works in comfort mode - I find the murmur quite relaxing.

    • @kiwiklogg
      @kiwiklogg 5 років тому +1

      I think in the 7.5R, engine sound in race also does something to the mapping that makes more pops and bangs from the exhaust. If you put in eco, those pops are gone

    This is crazy!! I have no clue as to why VW would even add this thing! If you're buying a Golf R, you want the actual SOUND of the car.. not a damn speaker! So strange. Vibrators are not the real thing. Every female knows that.

      In Germany it becomes harder and harder to ride a loud car. Especially in the cities you can get trouble with cops etc.That's why manifacturors install fake noise so at least inside your car it's still a bit more enjoyable to ride.

      @anAmishGuy 5 років тому +5

      I wrapped up the plug in electrical tape to hopefully prevent any electrical issues, then taped the cord down to keep it from banging around, so I think it should be fine. If any water gets into the unplugged Soundaktor and ruins it, I consider that a bonus.

    Thanks for this video! I am contemplating buying an R, and the whole idea of a soundaktor feels phony as hell. I can’t believe the Volkswagen group would allow such a cheap gimmick in such an expensive car. The last time I liked hearing fake engine sounds I was like 4 years old playing with my toy car. 😂😂😂

  • @Kevin_MK7RSR
    @Kevin_MK7RSR 9 років тому +3

    I noticed a *slight* difference. The before is more "thumpy". I have watched a lot of R videos to get a sense for the sound (because I owned an 04' R32 and if I get an R I want it to sound good) and I always wondered why they were so quiet outside, with little to no low end bassy grunt, but sounded so aggressive inside. Now I know. Seems almost like cheating though. LOL.

  • @jacekgrudzinski133
    @jacekgrudzinski133 4 роки тому

    As a Gtd owner, I find soundaktor a useful gimmick. First off - the diesel does not sound great originally. Secondly - you can turn it on and off from the Mode menu in the infotainmrnt. Sure it is paired with sport Mode, but Individual Mode gives you the ability to set it as you please. I understand that is not the case in gti and r.

    I’m confused, because the car still has an audible nasty and snappy growl with the Soundaktor turned off. Is it just less loud in the drivers seat with it unplugged? I’m just wondering what the point is of something like a Soundaktor if the motor already sounds good and is audible in the cockpit. I’ve got a 2019 R and recently learned of the Soundaktor, and I’m probably going to disable it because I want to hear my motor and the exhaust note. Not pumped in vibrations from an echo box.

    hi, i just viewed your video about disconnecting the soundaktor. i tried to find a specific video for my vehicle 2021 tiguan 2.0 turbo but cant find one. so my question ( if you know the answer) is, i hear what i would describe as a rattling type of sound that only occurs when i accelerate from a stop up to about 3000rpm, then it stops. do TIGUANS also have this soundaktor ??? anxiously waiting for your reply. btw, great video.

    Blew my mind to realize that I wasn't freaking crazy. I used to have a 2012 manual 2.5 Golf that frankly sounded a little more "manly". When I bought the 2015 Golf, I did notice (other than the freaking turbo lag) that the sound wasn't quite the same. I rolled down my windows awhile back (something I don't do frequently since I'm in AZ) and I did notice a HUGE difference in cabin/windows up sound vs. windows down. It honestly made me miss my 2.5L. :( Feels like more sketchy shit VW does (even though I still love my car) to make their vehicles do things that aren't quite real.

It's just a preference really like most of the old women that want to do this because they say their not teenage boys and want the car quieter...their not car enthusiast with that response are they?

    When I leave my car in race mode then turn it off then on again, even though it says I'm in race mode my sound actor Doesn't come on and my steering and throttle feel like it's in normal mode. If I then press race mode again it all come back on. Why do I need to keep pressing it when it's already in race mode? Iv taken it to vw main dealer and they say there is nothing they can do as no code is showing then charged me 72 pound :( some times it just turns off after being on for a while. Does anybody know what could be the problem? Please help, and thats not even mentioning my clutch is slipping at. 23.000 miles on a manual 2016 and the blue strip in the door stopped working but that's fixed now. I'm ready for selling the dam thing.

      Jamster Smith sell it, the dsg are more reliable and I have heard the manual gearboxes aren't the greatest, especially when u go to mod the car

    I can't believe there is no option in the UI menu that disables the hilarious soundaktor permanently.

    Thanks for that video. Gonna make that thing disappear. Here in winter it’s quite cold, and soon as it’s below minus 15 degrees celsius, rattttttttllllllllle as s fuck, i was thinking my DSG was broke, read on Golf R forum it eas actu the fake windshield sound making that freaking annoying sound. I don’t get it. Make the engine and exhaust sound good, it’s your performance car of VW. Mercrdes with the A45 Amg S did they’re homework. Thanks again.

    Sounds better without the fake noise. I could not enjoy driving this car if I knew that the low end rumble was not real.

    I much prefer it actually without the sound actuator. It's like: why make noise for no reason at all... Kinda the same approach like with a Bugatti. Just let it make the noise that it has to basically...
