I've been using Resolve to edit my gameplay videos for a couple years now and didn't know that sidechain trick, that's awesome. By the way, if I wanted a faster way to apply those audio settings for future edits, is there a way to save them in bulk and reapply them all at once to a track?
@@CaseyFaris Finally got around to trying this out and that's exactly what I was looking for, thank you yet again. That's like 3 coffees I owe you now. :)
Out of all the davinci resolve tutorials I've watched the last day or so. Your videos are really on point. Very good pace, brief but informal on everything you are doing. Coming from Sony Vegas, it feels much different. My muscle memory needs a period of adjustment. Thanks again man
Thank you so much. I’m still learning and this helped a lot. I use to do my edits in the cut page and man did that take forever. 🤦♂️ then I watched your video, life is good now. Life is good. Thank you
As an audio engineer by trade, I approve of this side-chain method. One thing to note is the first example of compression, you didn't move the threshold at all. So the audio was not being compressed, but was just turned up in volume instead. The way to tell is to look in the middle at the "gain reduction" amount. The audio should be bouncing as you talk. Slowly turn the "threshold" knob counterclockwise until you get *subjective* about 6db of reduction. *subjective*. Good luck guys and gals.
Great tutorial! I love that everyone has their own little tips and tricks that they share in their videos. Always helps someone learn something knew with a program they've been using.
I discovered this channel like a week ago because I wanted to learn how to edit my gameplay for UA-cam, This channel is a monster I literally learnt a lot and I'm just binge watching trying to learn a lot from all of your videos.
I just hit a goldmine with this tutorial. That waveform matching tip is gonna save me so much time from having to do it all manually. I didn't even know about the White Box that lets me drag those things on my preview window. And that Ctrl + Backslash. This is gonna save me a ton of time. Thanks Heaps! Subbed.
This tutorial is so useful and easy! You deserve way more likes. DaVinci Resolve can be very difficult and confusing when first starting, and this helped me a lot with the basic essentials that I didn't know.
The send/listen compressor tip was awesome. I knew that was possible but just couldn’t figure out how to do it. I want to go back and redo all of my videos now. Oh and the quality export thing. Omgsh!! Thank you!!!!!
Good video and very informative. As a musician and someone who records and mixes music I was surprised you knew and shown compression. Perfecting compression anytime vocals are involved can be very challenging ( if you’re striving for things to be really good or perfect). For gaming I think what you’ve shown is a great shortcut without diminishing the quality of the sound and vocals. Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much!!!! Your video was extremely helpful. Only ever edited one let's play and realized halfway through that the original software I was using was garbage (OneShot). Found Resolve and never would have known about these features and just felt lost. Thank you!
Wonderful video! I've been waiting for this one :) I don't do game recording but technical tutorials, so recording my screen as my face... Now that I feel more comfortable, let's have some fun! Thanks for sharing!
I love Vegas Pro but have been trying to get into Resolve for some time now. Love your videos and how you explain everything. Just wanted to stop by and say thanks. Cheers for now. Jim
Just for your information all you're doing with the compressor in this instance is using make up gain and increasing the volume. You'd need to bring the threshold down to a level where the incoming audio 'triggers' the compressor for the ratio to have any effect on volume. The compressor just reduces peaks, not increase lows (although the expander section will do that), allowing you to increase overall volume without peaks clipping.
first found you when I was researching LUT's for OBS a while back, and now I ended up here again while researching editing in resolve (didn't come to your channel specifically) so I guess it's only fair that I subscribe at this point lol. Keep up the great content, I need you! Lmao
Better late then never!! Thanks for the tutorial! Just started streaming and recording my games, tried two uploads pn YT - but want to improve my editing. I'm subscribing and watching other uploads from you😊
You could always record the voice in OBS to then use that to sync with the voice and camera recorded outside of OBS and then just remove OBS voice. But that way of making voice louder and everything else quieter was so freaking useful, thank you so much
Omg i wish i would watched your videos earlier. Ive known about you and been subscribed for a WHILE now but because I have ADHD it was always boring and frustrating to sit through (no offense that's just my ADHD talking). But now that I'm medicated they are SO HELPFULL! and I'm learning so much that is gonna make editing a lot less of a pain in the ass and a lot less time consuming
Casey, do you happen to have a tutorial on making a repeatable zoom in/out effect? I want a talking head video to zoom in slightly, hold for a few seconds, zoom out, hold, and then repeat several times over the course of like half an hour. For the life of me I can't figure out how to make something that is easily copy/paste. I don't make gaming videos, but this video was still super helpful.
Oh. And making keyboard shortcuts for both inserting edit points and Trim Beginning and Trim End (remember to also be in edit trim mode) will save soooo much time when blazing through the first edit of videos like these. Go to start of where you want to remove. Add edit point. Go to where interesting bits resume. Press Trim Beginning. Boom. Done. It's the equivalent of adding the second edit point. Selecting the offending bit of video and rightclicking to select ripple delete. It seems trivial. But those clicks add up and you want to do as much decisions as possible and not waste time on implementing each decision. Also, I would also immediately after syncing the clips select them all and link them... To make sure they stay in sync as I move clips around. Maybe even look into the multicam edit solutions available in Resolve to speed up the edit even more.
Yeah this is a huge time saver. Didnt get into it too much because of time, but I have this tip in other vids. I have q and w as trim beg and trim end, and s as razor all clips. It goes really fast.
I don't know if this was shown in the video (I'm only one minute into it), but you can also use OBS to film your camera and gameplay side by side. Just make your canvas and output resolution 3840x1080 Then you can duplicate the video and crop one to be the camera only and the other for gameplay. Everything will already be synced, so less headaches.
Finally a Resolve genius!!! Sometimes I voice over my game play in Resolve, no issues with setting anything up. However, at random times and intervals I will get very noticeable clicking or popping in the voice over. I know what clipping is and this isn't it, plus to be sure I've checked my monitors on my audio interface and inside of Resolve. I've seen mention online of this issue because OBS isn't very good about staying at exactly 60 fps and the frames won't exactly line up when I add the audio. I've no idea if this is true, but more importantly no ideas about how to fix the clicking and popping. Any ideas Casey? Any help would be appreciated!!!
@@CaseyFaris thanks for the response, that was the first things I double checked. I have all the video and audio settings exactly the same across the system. I have zero issues recording with voice in OBS and have asked lots of folks in stream and in chats during games and they don't hear it, only doing VO's in Resolve. It's been horrible to chase down.
I know I am really late to the game here. step 1. click on the gear next to your audio mixer and go to advanced audio properties and your mic and desktop audio will have a list of tracks with check marks. check one with only track one and the second with only track 2. go to settings, output, then recording tab. make sure you have recording format in mp4 (it records with multiple audio tracks) and check off audio track one and 2. I hope some one gets use out of that.
This video is awesome! But question though, to anyone in the comments. How do you record all the elements separately? I’ve been recording with OBS for so long I haven’t even attempted 😅
You might want to turn the threshold control on the compressor down a bit so that it actually makes some gain reduction and does what you said it will do.
That audio "trick" was a huge tip!
Thanks!

How can you add sound effects
That audio compression trick was actually the most helpful out of the bunch.
Finally this is exactly what I was looking for I practically typed the name of this video word for word
How do you add sound effects?
IKR I AGREE SO MUCH BOBBY
Luke Verbeke you just need to add the sound effect file into davinci resolve through the media tab
