  • This video will show you how to secure a loose toilet paper holder, towel rack, or hand towel holder with the use of toggle bolts. We also review different types of drywall anchors including: expansion anchors, threaded anchors, and snap toggles which will give you a better idea of the many options available when securing a bracket to drywall. This is a super common problem and even heavy wet towels over time can be enough weight to loosen up bathroom hardware. I will start off with a little overview and then jump in with an example of fixing a very loose toilet paper holder.
    List of Tools Used:
    1. Phillips screwdriver
    2. Flat head screwdriver
    3. Standard pliers
    4. Cordless drill / screwdriver

If you want a loooooooonnnnnggggg explanation on two styles of wall anchors that creates this problem to begin with, watch from the beginning. If you already know your anchors suck and want to fix it, skip to 4:46 (as others have suggested). That said, I'm glad I found someone that addresses this specific issue. Just saved me a huge headache.

Thank you! This is the BEST description of the very exact same issue I've had with the towel rack in our master bathroom. I was getting frustrated with the different wall anchors because, oddly, there are no studs in the section of wall that the screws that go through drywall can tap into. This is very helpful! Thanks for posting!

Glad the video helped out. Yeah, my first preference is to secure the bracket into a stud but if the stud isn't available the toggle bolt will do the trick.

I thought I was completely screwed and would have to rehang the entire towel rack due to the size of the holes on the loose part. These toggle bolts are a life saver and so much easier to put in compared to wall anchors. Thank you so much for this video I’m using these every time now!

YES!!! This is literally the ONLY way to fix this, I arrived at the exact same conclusion. Also, you don't even realize it but you helped me in the terminology for what to call those little tiny screws that go into the bottom of the TP holder. You mentioned they're called "set screws" and now with a quick google I've found a way to buy a replacement set screw for the one I have that broke.

Great video--thank you for the thorough guidance! Just a follow-up question: how do you remove the toggle bolts?

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  6 років тому +4

Hey Emily thanks for the kind words. When you need to remove the toggle bolts you just unscrew the bolt and at the same time apply a light pull to the bolt ensuring the wing nut is being pulled against the backside of the drywall (this ensures the wing nut isn't just spinning inside the wall). When the bolt is all the way unscrewed the wing nut will fall off and as such each toggle bolt is a 1-time use piece of hardware. This is also why I always have a couple spare wing nuts in various sizes handy. Hope this helps and let me know if you have additional follow up questions. Take care!

Hey Tina, I assume you still have drywall so it will work but for instance 1/2 inch (thin) drywall will not hold as much as 5/8 inch (thick) drywall. Best of luck with the repair.

Hey Komo, can you secure the bracket (silver thing) to the drywall by using the toggle bolts shown in the video?

Hahaha, this was the first video I ever published. Still don't know what I am doing but certainly didn't know back then.

I find it that sometimes the hardware doesn't sit well with the wall bracket. No matter how much I tighten it it'll become loose. That's when construction adhesive is your best friend.

Hey Eddie, I had similar issues when using anchors in the past but toggle bolts usually pull everything in tight.

Good to know video, but those stand alone toilet paper holders are the best. No drilling holes or applying adhesives to walls.

Yeah if the stand alone fits your space those can be a solid option. Thanks for the tip.

I recently repaired a toilet paper holder. These videos helped alot. But I would choose a stand alone holder any day.

i tripped outta my shower and broke my fall wth my hand slamming into the toilet paper holder and ripping it off. thankfully all i needed to do was loosen the set screw put the rod end thingy back on and tighten the set screw before my dad got home lol.

Just spray some great stuff in the holes and add the hardware again done hold for life

What the What!?!? 😁 Might be worth a try but since i usually have an assortment of toggle bolts around that is my preferred method. Thanks for the alternative idea.
