From one Bradford to another, I love this “Hack” or professional “Jimmy-Jack” as my wife would say. I fixed 2 towel racks that have sagging forever in less than an hour without spackle or paint. Awesome! I would say that using 1/4” plywood is a more assured non-split backing. Also, in one case the lower screw was catching a 2x4 so I used a narrower piece horizontally on top. With a single hole and the wire knotted behind the ply and painters tape to hold the wire in place as I reached for tools. I hand started that screw first and pulled it close before centering the lower stud screw. Came out perfect and super strong. Thanks for the great idea.

We just did this today for the kids bathroom hand towel hanger. My husband and I found the instructions easy to follow and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much for this video!!!

Awesome idea!!! I was about to patch/mud/spackle the hole for the upteenth time. This idea worked great! Used some scrap pieces of wood and wire. Didn't have to go to Home Depot. Thanks so much.

yeah just use a thicker piece of wood and once you get it in there screw it directly to the drywall, then patch drywall and attach holder... it'll look better and last longer that was

I like to add a dab of construction adhesive like Liquid Nails to the top and bottom of wood backing to help it adhere to the back of the drywall and keep it from slipping.

I gave this a shot as the weather was horrible for travel and couldnt get extra sheet rock for a patch. I had what i needed laying around the house to use this method: I used some Gorilla Glue for extra support. Its very firm against the wall. I inserted the support bracket while the spackle was still wet for extra hold. Work so well! Thanks for the idea!

Excellent hack. I've used wood backer myself but hadn't thought to use wire to hold. Much better than anything I'd come up with.

Paint stirrers are free, but a scrap of thin plywood would do a better, more permanent job.

This worked pretty well on the hand towel rack... but not quite perfectly. Pretty sure the stir stick cracked or split when inserting the top screw. 😣The top screw still moves ever so slightly when jiggled. Even so, both screws are far more secure than they were before. Especially the bottom one. Really appreciate this video. Thanks, Mr. Bradford! 🖖

works well. I too prefer using a little strip of 1/4" or 3/8 plywood which will not split and holds a screw better, and if possible a dab of glue so that it sticks to the back of the sheetrock so that if you have to temp remove later you do not lose the backing.

Cool! I have a similar problem except the wall I have to repair in the bathroom shares the same wall with an interior chimney vent for the gas fireplace in the living room so I've only got about 1/4" of an inch clearance leaving no room for an anchor or mollie. They all require about an inch behind the wall. If I can get the cut down and narrowed stir stick to get in behind the wall I'll be home free with your idea. Either way, thanks for sharing your idea! 😊

It's an allen wrench, usually a metal rod that comes in various diameters for the corresponding allen screw. The screw typically has a hexagonal recess to be driven by the wrench.

Sooooo, the only thing holding this in position is the tightness of the screw in a very flimsy piece of wood pressing against the drywall? lol. You are better off using drywall tape and 5 minute hot mud then a good anchor.

You essentially made your own make shift toggle bolt. I don’t see why this one will fare any better than the toggle bolt you pulled out and discarded at the beginning. I guess the paint stick has more surface area behind the wall, but it’s also flimsy compared to a metal toggle. Seems like it would be a horse apiece? Hope it works for you.
