If they don't know the context/meaning/purpose of the sample then it's not fair to judge. It is overlapping his vocals and it does mix with his voice making it less clear. Of course that's half the point as most Kanye fans know. But it's not really fair to judge someone who isn't familiar.
And as a side note that's something cool about Kanye. It's not entirely about the lyrics. It's a mix of the words, musicianship, meaning, intention, abstract meaning, etc. He makes art in different ways. Someone going in blind definitely won't understand all of those aspects

I’m primarily a metal fan, and Yeezus was my first real experience with Kanye, so the samples did throw me at first. But I do remember the sample being intriguing and cool when I first heard it, and then when I looked up the lyrics and it was a whole new level.

Hey guys. Metalhead all my life. Discovered Kanye two years or so ago, and he's changed my perception. I still love metal, and im still not a fan of most hip hop. I don't view Ye as a rapper. Hes a musician and an artist. Hes ever changing. What i like most is his belief in himself, his devotion to family, and his fearless approach to his craft. He's the most human celebrity I've ever seen and its refreshing even after 20 years of success to see he hasn't allowed it to change him.

Yeezus is the album this song comes from and for many people it's Kanye's most challenging album , many fans of his couldn't vibe with it because it was quite a big departure from his previous music, but many people think it's his best work.
Lou Reed from The Velvet Underground a few months before he passed away wrote an article that's still online about how much he loved the album and thought it was genius.
It's an acquired taste , it's like experimental yet commercial/ industrial pop rap, Kanye borrows from other music but his style overall isn't directly comparable to anyone else.

Ya'll did it!! The BBC version, and ya didn't disappoint!!! From the facial expressions to the criticisms, I thoroughly enjoyed the reaction.
The sound ya'll found annoying is a sample from a chilling song called "Strange Fruit," originally recorded by Billie Holiday, about the lynching of blacks during the Jim Crow era in America. The lyrics "Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze..... breeze, is what's being repeated throughout the song.
Harry, you were spot on when you talked about videos of people making different sounds in the kitchen. That's kind of Ye's approach to music and samples, especially with this album, Yeezus. He can combine a mix of random sounds that don't sound like much on their own to create something cool and different.
Thanks for the honest, genuine reaction. I'll be requesting more in the future. And don't worry, my next one won't be another song by Ye... lol

Sample is from Nina Simone-Strange Fruit. Give it a listen, the lyrics are important.

  • @xavvi
    @xavvi 9 місяців тому +1

The sample you guys don't seem to like is from legendary artist Nina Simone from her performance of the song Strange Fruit. It's an incredibly important song/poem as it depicts a black person having been lynched and the body just sways off the tree, having become the titular strange fruit.
The sample itself is saying "Black bodies", "Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees" and "swinging in the southern breeze", and the word "breeze" is repeated.
In the context of the album as well as the context of using the sample as a juxtaposition of modern american black folk it is both important and powerful, but I absolutely understand that without that cultural and national significance, without exposure to the genre and the art of sampling, and without context of the song in the album I can see how you just plain wouldn't get it.
For me (and for most folks) the sample is the entire point.

I see a lot of people explaining the "annoying sound." I think they are referring to the actual sound which is Nina Simone's voice they don't like (the sample is actually Nina Simone's cover of Billie Holiday's song). I'm willing to bet even if they knew the true meaning and all that before hand it wouldn't change the fact that they find it annoying unfortunately. I personally love her voice and love it sampled in the song.

Music lovers of ALL genres should absolutely know who tf Billie Holiday is!! U don't understand y he chose this ladies song to sample in the background bc U would 1st need to understand the true history of oppression n slavery. This particular song was sung by one of the greatest singers ever, the late great Billie Holiday. It describes a lynching that she witnessed in the south, and she was stopped, targeted, harassed, n imprisoned by the US government bc she refused to stop singing this song. They actually put her in prison for the sht! It speaks to the atrocities of racism and the human suffering. It's an incredibly powerful, sad n painful yet beautiful song. So the Genius that is Kanye chose this song for it's powerful, painful story but also bc It wasn't allowed to b performed. Kanye said Fuck that sht! I'm going to take this song and make sure that it's played by millions of ppl everywhere & I'm going to add my music n art to it n re-create history. This song is not only genius, but this is who tf Kanye is... U say he can't do something n he'll do it 100x in ur face to make a point. Billie Holiday didn't get to live to see what her songs meant to ppl, or how they helped change the world. So in his way... Kanye just honored this woman's memory by retelling her story on his album. I love this so much. Sorry this was so long, but I just feel like maybe u could better understand & appreciate that "background noise" had u known the deep history n meaning of that song u were listening to. Which if u would like to hear it in it's entirety is called Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday.

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us, now that you have determined that a song you didn't click with is not music, the debate is over! We no longer need to wonder if hip hop is legit, kanye, or really any music made by black people. I've heard many other experts such as yourself throughout history pointing out what is music and not, such as the blues, jazz, rock, and hip hop. I am so blessed to have brilliant folk such as yourself only having an issue with the credibility of music that have been heavily inspired or dominated by black artists.
Tldr eat shit man, hip hop is and always will be music. Quit talking about something you know nothing about, Google the dunning Krueger effect and question yourself whether you have as strong opinions for white music

Only someone who knows nothing about Music would make a statement like this… So many different genres has bene seen as “not Music” through the years like jazz and rock which is probably what you like. With other words you are this generations arrogant snob when it comes to music.

This isn't music, it's rap. There isn't a single instrument. And he doesn't sing he raps. About 75% of the vocal is all electronically enhanced. Drum beat is sample, other noise is mostly electronically altered, scratched and "breeze is frickin' annoying. I don't like most rap. Some I can tolerate. The middle portion where he is just rapping with no alteration which Harry thought was all right I found tolerable. Enough said. Not a fan of the man or the genre. Sickening after watching some of your The Warning reactions.

“This isn`t Music its rap” How Can you be this arrogant and snobby towards Music while not knowing where the “annoying breeze” sample is from. Its a sample of one of the most beloved songs of all time (not hiphop) You would know this if you actually nknew what you was talking about or any Music for that matter:) What rap Can you tolerate?

Hi Skankhunt 42, I actually did read most of the other comments before I added my comment so I found out what "Strange Fruit" was about. I have never heard the song, but one of the comments explained what the song is about. It sounds very profound and powerful. It too may not be to my taste but I would certainly appreciate it. Now it is a short sample, and for those of us who were not familiar with the full song "Strange Fruit" might not grasp the co-relation. True there isn't much rap I would listen to more than once. For some reason I liked "Lose Yourself" by Eminem (I haven't listen to in years but I think that is the title, maybe because I watched the movie "8 Mile"). I do like Linkin Park, which mixes rap with rock. You might not consider that rap. I did say I could tolerate Kanye when he was just raping (with no auto-tune, I'm not a fan of auto-tune unless used sparingly so you're not sure if it was actually used or not).
I did find it odd that Harry and Sharlene (or Charlene) reacted to this. Although I know it was a paid request which they are obligated to review. If someone requests "Strange Fruit" I would certainly watch or listen to it. If any of you would send me a link it would also appreciate it.

@@indvnc I mean what you descibred as “Good rap Music” pretty much erased you from having an opinion that Can be respected about the Music. You cant say that rap is not Music and then not have heard much more than Lose yourself and Linkin park…. Come on😂 I like Linkin park and i like Eminem, but they have nothing on some other rap artists. Strange fruit is a song you need to know to know much about Music. But yeah the day you realise that all genres have wack artists and fantastic artists you Will appreciate Music Way more, since you wont ignore half of the Music thats out for some ignorant reasons. Sampling Can be used in a extremmely lazy Way, but it Can also be used in really clever ways to actually change the sample compeltely to make a new sogn that dont Sound much like the sample and have a completely different energy. The autotune on this song is not meant to be make kanyes voice Sound better, its meant as an instrument which is why i appreciate it Way more.
