Happy to see you guys putting out content on these monteros. There's a small yet big community on these guys. Excited to see what comes next. Thanks for posting!
Much appreciated! We look forward to engaging more with other Montero enthusiasts as the build progresses! Pretty much only ever see Land Cruisers / 4Runners around here (John own's a FJ62 as well), but the Montero is a majorly under-appreciated truck. Regardless our current problems, we love the truck so far!
I did a Starion engine swap on my 2Dr Raider (and have an MPI Starion I built). The 1st thing I would sort out after watching your video is the MAS. I can’t tell what’s going on there. Looks like someone used masking tape to hook up a 1G DSM MAS with an open filter to some flex hose? That looks highly suspect to me! That needs to be air tight. Any leaks and it’ll throw your A/F ratios all off, especially with a rad fan blowing on it. Make sure all the air getting measured at the MAS is getting into the engine, timing and ignition sys are good, and then go through all the sensors one by one. It seems you have the fuel part sorted. After that it’ll run like a top. Good luck. It’s a fun truck with the extra kick of the turbo.
Thanks for the offer, Chris! Fixing up some more wiring issues (obviously) then proceeding from there. Potentially having issues with the ISC motor, but yet to be clearly determined.
Have you heard of any engine upgrades. I just bought a super clean 1986 exactly like yours but white and it’s automatic with 2.6 liter. I heard it sucks. Good thing I got it for $1300 hahaha… I wonder if I can LS swap it
@@skylinemusik1 LS swaps on the SWB are next to impossible without A LOT of fab work. Might want to look into Vortec V6 options, but again, a good amount of fab work.
I have a 89 dodge raider with a starion motor. I re did the whole fuel system. Cleaned the tank, new lines, injectors and fuel pressure regulator. I cannot get this thing to run good. Any tips?
@@TheCurbCut I have found that out after continuing working on my starion motor. I'm thinking about swapping a inline 6 out of a jeep Cherokee and boosting it
Megasquirt used to be a thing back 20 years ago with this conversion. I'm kicking myself for letting mine sit for so long, tags expired in '04, but this video is about one day from where I'm at with my 87 auto with an 88 Starion engine (from an auto). Luckily, I had cleaned out the tank all those years ago and kept it in good shape. I rebuilt the throttle body, basically gaskets, got my injectors rebuilt and had to replace one, new fuel lines, etc. It's really only a seven wire integration between the truck and the car, as long as you have the harness, ECU and spark box from the donor. You can always find a place for the intercooler - mine's in back of the front skid plate. I did opt to do away with the "downpipe" that came stock with its pre-cat and near-90 degree corner for a mandrel bent 2.5" piece I found somewhere years ago and I have my area-required cat converter and muffler in 2.5" still in boxes. Knowing my luck, it'll still be an uphill with this thing, but I'm closer than I've ever been. All credit to FastEddy and OldColt from the late 4X4Wire forum. The former wrote a complete step-by-step on the whole conversion, like everything. The latter was most likely the first to ever do it, back when both the Montero and the Starion were almost new. He still uses it to plow snow, to my knowledge.
Love how In depth and technical John is In these videos. Thanks for the quality content!

Nick! How ya doin' buddy!
Any updates on this project? I'd love to see more of this

Hey! I have done a similar swap and would love to help you out with any of your bugs. Good work!

Hey mate, down in Australia just got my hands on a g63b montero, having a few issues myself
How does that have a front solid axle? I’d love to see a vid on converting to that.
Did you paint it or that’s original paint?
Very original paint!

@@skylinemusik1 1UZ will fit, work and make it absolutely rip. 4.3 is less common. Many have started, few have finished.

Stock TBI is nothing but heartbreak. Current plans are full MPI - stay tuned, we'll be back!

@@brysonevans8452 There's an idea! I would be amazed to see that fit in the SWB engine bay without major modifications. Good luck!

What happened to this thing? I have an 87 montero with a starion turbo on the stock engine, holley sniper efi, water to air IC.
That must be a hoot. G54BT is a 7:1 engine, the G54B is 8.6.
@@JohnnyBfromPeoria 7lbs of boost is all it needs! Until I get a heavy duty transmission from Marlin Crawler lol.
Gotta get you some aftermarket hands my dude.
That’d help!
