As a Scotland supporter i can tell you how they work. You simply throw them to Richie Gray and win. If hes not on the field, you're best to let the other team have it,cause the plan requires Richie you see.
I am new to your channel and wow now I know why you are in the super bracket of rugby commentary. In the Boks- All Blacks game I, 🇿🇦, could not believe the line out problems. Thinking Bongi ‘how can you miss your jumper?’ All is revealed - Thank you.
When a defending lineout is not competed it is generally to place players in position to counter the opposition of attacking through a maul. You normally see it when a side is defending within their 22
So what ACTUALLY goes on at the Lineout? 60 years ago - anything you could get away with. Commentator Bill McLaren used to distinguish between hanky-panky (foul play) and argy-bargy (violent and dangerous foul play). Back then, the winger used to throw in. I think France were the last to change.
I wold have thought the 10 calls the shape after the line out I would’ve thought the forwards sort the lineout plan and the scrum-half then decides to either keep up with the forwards or send it out to the backs. So I’m actually shocked that the ten is in charge of the entire thing. There’s also a lots of footage on Ireland. That a flattering thing for Paul O’Connell is line out work with Ireland.
00:12:44 - this is something that happens all the time nowadays, but I think there's a decent argument that Mostert funs afoul of 18.17a which then means there are in effect two receivers breaching 18.16, so to the letter, Scotland should receive a free-kick. Although the law is slightly contradictory as 18.29d says as long as he keeps moving until the lineout is over its ok to leave the lineout to receive the ball, though I would think the intent is that that is passed to them while they are running.
Love the content. Just a quick note. You are allowed to unscrew lightbulbs that get in the way of the screen you are projecting footage onto. Just remember to put it back afterwards. The big orange disk isn't the easiest thing to navigate when looking at the fantastic breakdowns you two do as it sits in the worst possible place, as a reflection to the centre of the action. Keep up the good work!
That's a great idea that I probably wouldn't have thought of despite it's simplicity, but the lighting is certainly on the lower end of visibility so I'd imagine that's the only other light in the room besides the main switch which was probably way too bright. He probably needs to bring his own light source!
Not sure if its a joke your getting at, but its a BOX kick, which is a high and arching kick from a stationary position by the half backs, usually from a set piece such as a maul scrum or ruck.
At 2:23 who was that behind RG Snyman? The beast of Etsebeth is in front and I understand the camera angles can play tricks with your mind but I reckon that is PSDT. The only others it could possibly be is De Allende or Kriel. The Springboks with Rassie are on another level right now even with the new boys. Kolbe has been secretly practicing in the roll and it can work in the long run when Bongi is on the bench.
Yes, that’s definitely Pieter Steph. He’s such a lanky looking guy in flight that you forget how enormous he actually is. He’s also usually accompanied alongside the other locks which doesn’t help. But then you see him next to normal human beings and you realise what a giant he is.
When I'm reffing (at the lowest levels) I'll only ping if it's left the tunnel before being caught. The new law that is being trailed means refs only blow if the defending team jumps.
The bigger question is:- What happens in the front row of a scrum? A lot of time is wasted on resetting the scrums because of an inability do their job efficiently. The resulting penalties take further valuable time and can cost expensive penalties. The whole set of consequences for a minor offence of a knock on or forward pass outweighs the whole purpose of the scrum, which is such a pity as I don’t want to convert to League by default.
That was a really weird Squarespace add at the start
So cool to hear this straight from a world expert. As a former 2nd row myself I understood some of it, but the level of detail here is excellent.
21:25 "Defensive line : 22m - Distance to opposition line : 88m". I guess rugby pitches are bigger than I thought.
But distance from halfway is 40m. Feels like one team is getting screwed here.
As a Scotland supporter i can tell you how they work. You simply throw them to Richie Gray and win. If hes not on the field, you're best to let the other team have it,cause the plan requires Richie you see.
Also as a Scotland fan, I can tell everyone that if Scotland lose a line-out, they're probably losing the next 8 in a row.
For wales atm it's Adam Beard.
I was so excited when I saw the title of this video… Squidge and Krius… I let out an involuntary yelp.
My wife just shook her head
Great Springbok win, equally great Argentina win and now a Squidge video to serve as the cherry on the rugby cake.
This weekend has been epic.
I absolutely love this sort of content!
Now, can you get Jacques Nienaber to tell you all about defense for the next video?

"An inch or two can make a massive difference": Flash shot of The Hask. Is this a joke I'm not in on?
As a former winger all I know about line-outs is my hands get cold
That was brilliant, Squidge, extremely well edited and unexplained. Many thanks to you, George, and everyone else involved.
This was fantastic thank you for making it - I played and then watched Rugby for over 30 years and learnt a ton
Videos like this are so so so good. It is great to learn the technical details of the game from world experts. Thanks for this!
That was an awesome insight. Keep this kind of thing coming.
I had no clue that ten directed things!
Incredible insight as per usual 👏
Great insight - loved it
fourfive, the george kruis of hydration
Can´t wait for that Pumas video!!!!
🌍
Awesome, Squidge, thanks! Learnt a lot. BTW i noticed a maths error. 100m - 22m is not 88m.
Great video Squidge!
Nice video. This reminded me that you've posted a video on scrums i haven't yet gotten to watching
Hugely interesting. I would have liked to hear more about a defending team deciding whether to compete in the air or not.
Yes, he did briefly hint that there is 'some' control .
When a defending lineout is not competed it is generally to place players in position to counter the opposition of attacking through a maul. You normally see it when a side is defending within their 22

And now boks going back to wingers throwing🤣
Yeah, my Dad was a hooker, and he was a regular jumper, in spite of not being over 6ft!
Hey Squdge.
You’re the goat buddy.
As a lock, I've been waiting for this video

Could you please do a analysis on how Argentina play? Especially after the match against Australia in Santa Fe?!?!
great insight and analysis

Hit the notification quicker than Tyrel Lomax went to the sin bin
Anyone else notice that the 22m line was shown to be "Distance to opposition line: 88m"? 🤣
That there maths doesn't math right...
As a referee, this was really interesting. As an IT guy, whoever's Mac that was on the TV really needs a software update 😂 it's years out of date!
Someone has probably already said it and don't wish to be critical, but the glare from the overhead lighting in the room on the screen was a shame.

@@WSEightyFour Couple of LED light pannels sorts that right out, v cheap from amazon (other shopping sources are available)
Great interview, did any of it go over your head? 😊
I look at the players feet in line-outs.. who is moving or planted.
JFC that taskbar
Please explain the Boks kick? I don't think its fair that one team gets a kick named after them. Why not call it a Scotts kick ?
Not sure if its a joke your getting at, but its a BOX kick, which is a high and arching kick from a stationary position by the half backs, usually from a set piece such as a maul scrum or ruck.
😂😂
Boks kick 😂😂😂 you mean box kick
What about when the winger runs up and throws the ball?
Such a shame Kruis retired when he did, England still haven’t replaced him properly since he left
How long can a jumper be held in the air?
Clicked faster than George Kruis lost 30kg of muscle
"or she" 😂😂😂
Spacesquare
Do a scrum video please 🙏
this is just another reason why union is miles better than league, so much more to the game in union
What if your winger throws the lineout?😂
Squarespace.
Lighting.
Finally early
22+88=100😂

Still didn't explain why so many skew throws are deemed straight. How skew must skew be to be adjudicated as skew?

No one saw the huge yellow halo on the TV screen? Great video otherwise!
