I love that in Wilfs final appearance, we see everything we loved about him in 2008. His joy at seeing the doctor, his fear at how the world is going, and most importantly of all his heroism, putting his family first and sacrificing his own safety

RTD has apparently said Wilf will not pass away even though the actor passed. He said the plan is to keep him alive off screen and not have him die. I’m very happy to hear that.
You probably don't remember as it's quite a minor detail, but the Hostile Action Displacement System (HADS) has been used before: The Krotons (Patrick Troughton), Cold War (Matt Smith), and a related system in The Witch's Familiar (Peter Capaldi).
While not name dropped as such, a similar thing was used in Voyage of the Damned (2007) as well to transport the Tardis to the Earth’s surface after the Titanic was struck by meteorites
It was also used in The Empress of Mars (Peter Capaldi) when Nardole went to the TARDIS to get ropes to pull Bill out of the hole, and the TARDIS dematerialized on its own with Nardole inside.
I do prefer how its used here over cold war because in cold war the 11th doctor just turns it back on for... reasons but here the tardis is reconfiguring so its turned off setting turn on again as it basically resets
@@isabelh5561 This is a late reply, but I believe it's not really a system, just the TARDIS itself will lock on to some gravity if knocked adrift unexpectedly, like it's not a system perse but more of a failsafe thing to prevent getting lost in the even the floor collapses around it, can't have her drifting off into space after all.

Bernard Cribbins appearing in the last scene made us all gape and gasp at this welcome ghost of what was: for a single moment we felt a companions wonder of time travelling back to see loved ones lost.
Wild Blue Yonder was a weird, bold, exceptional story in the experimental vein of Midnight, The Girl Who Waited and Heaven Sent. It felt like the perfect blend of Event Horizon, Sunshine and The Thing, unnerving and weird which is where Doctor Who can sometimes be at its very best. Hope we get more stories like this in the future, and having Bernard Cribbins' Wilf show up one more time at the end was emotionally iconic. The plan was for Wild to show up a bit more in the next episode but this scene was the only one they were able to film with Cribbins as he, tragically, passed away very shortly afterwards. Bernard Cribbins was a true legend in every way.
The Dr saying "If he runs out of time! The hostile actions ends! And a time machine, would know!". Gave me chills. Thats how you balance exposition. Because he was clearly only clarifying to himself but not spelling it out to viewers like Chibnall.
At a time when there seems to be SO MUCH negativity surrounding Doctor Who with "gatekeeping" fans ( decrying the show's supposed "doom"), it's so uplifting to experience your enthusiasm, to enjoy your sense of "love watching" (the opposite of "hate watching" (sad that such a term had to evolve)), finding the "good" in a story rather than the "bad". I so wish I had a friend like you with whom I could watch the show "side by side", both of us able to sync with the other's enjoyment in a positive feedback loop. I mean, I have friends, but physical distance prevents that kind of close quarters interaction.
Still doesn't change the fact rating are terrible and doctor Who will likely be cancelled for a few years since the audience walked away. Turning a blind eye to "bad writing" makes things worse and increases the likelihood you will not have a doctor who, star wars, rings of power, Marvel, Star Trek, the Witcher in the future.

The star beast gained more popularity overnight than any Whittaker episode could get overall and I’m sure the cumulative ratings will be higher. The live ratings for this episode was slightly less but that was to be expected, however we can be sure the cumulative ratings for that will be decent.
not surprised it's doing better than when Whittaker was on but don't pretend bringing David Tenant is not affecting the rating. It's another nostalgia pull from desperate studios. Only time will prove me right when Doctor Who gets canceled for 3 plus years due low audience viewership. I know Doctor Who has always been progressive but now it's just too much on the nose and fans reject it. If you defend bad shows don't be surprised when it's canceled. If anything I am the one that doesn't want DW canceled.

The heart filled to bursting with bittersweet joy from seeing dear Bernard as Wilf, the beautiful old soldier again. And it filled to bursting all over again upon seeing your beautiful, perfect reaction when you saw our dear Wilf, “you beautiful soul”, as you so heartwarmingly called him, once more. It was so wonderful, Jess.
This is one of the most tense episodes of Doctor Who, in the same scary vibe as "Midnight" or "The Doctor's Wife", where Amy and Rory are being hunted in the Tardis by House. The body deformation, the Doctor and Donna having to face their internalized fears and thoughts in the form of their monster counterparts, being trapped in an eerie environment ... I'm all in. ❤ RTD is being bold with this story for the second special and I'm chuffed to bits! It also shows the emotional progression of the Doctor. Between 10 and 14 there are subtle differences, ie 14 being more open emotionally and more mature. But also his fallibility, that he does not always get things right, like not recognizing Donna rightaway. I guess 14's character stems from David Tennant's age and experience as well as having gone through 11, 12 and 13, and he plays that out. It's not that 14 and 10 are different personalities with the same old face but 14 is rather an extension of 10, which just makes more sense. And Wilfred Mott, such a bittersweet reunion, knowing that this was his final scene and there were more scenes intended in the last special but sadly did not happen because of Bernard Cribbins declining health. I salute you, Sir 🫡 RIP Bernard Cribbins! ❤
When Donna asked what she missed in fifteen years, the music from Face the Raven when Clara dies is playing! The episode with a countdown and the Doctor NOT being able to save his companion.
The ending to this episode was without a doubt the most tense I’ve felt watching this show in so many years. My heart dropped so hard watching Donna standing there watching the explosion get closer.
I should have known she wasn’t gonna die but they honestly had me fooled for a second Like in theory she could have died and then next week he would have realised it’s not the real Donna with him
Catherine Tate's acting in that final scene was SO GOOD! I also knew they wouldn't kill off a companion like that, but dear god, her desperate crying at thin air, telling the Doctor that he picked up the wrong one, and the fear and sorrow as the explosion rocked the long hallway--my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach in a way that I haven't experienced in a while. Excellent work from everyone in this excellent episode!
Technically this joke doesn't work because gravity actually is derived from gravitas not the other way round, but since the joke in the episode is equally flawed, who cares I'm having fun 😜
I did not know that bernard was still alive during filming so last episode i was like aww they mentioned him because they cant show him. The fact that he just popped on screen and i got the single best cinematic closure ive felt since the One ring was detroyed like healed some part of me. I dont know but i feel like it was such a special moment. Wilf is a legend.
In the behind the scenes video for this episode they say this was the final scene he filmed before he died. He was supposed to have more scenes but he was just too ill to film them. Leaving his final scene in the episode was the best decision ever
Afraid to say this is the last we see of Wilf as Bernard became too unwell to record anymore scenes for the next episode. That being said it was so lovely to have him back one last time. RIP
This has to be my favourite reaction to this special. You were captured by every beat the writers wanted to get the audience with. A truly excellent episode and an excellent reaction thank you :)
I loved this episode so much. As soon as the Doctor came back into the orange room, sat on floor and talked to Donna, I just knew it wasn't the Doctor. I had Ark in Space vibes at the start, a bit of Silence in the Library, a bit of Midnight, and a hint of The Impossible Planet. Also originality. So creepy, so unsettling. Wonderful. And Wilf at the end was the icing on the cake.
Yes!! The way David just slid down the wall and stayed totally still listening to Donna in that scene is what made that acting for me. Somehow that is just not the Doctor.
Bernard Cribbins filmed that scene and past away a few weeks later. It was amazing to see his last acting role being a show he loved. He had also starred in the 1960s Dalek invasion Earth movie with Peter Cushin as The Doctor. A true Who legend.
I really like how they acknowledged not only Flux, but the Timeless Child storylines in this special. And seeing 14 finally have a moment to react to them both…oh, my heart…💔

Very glad that this was a step up from last week's episode. Not that I didn't enjoy The Star Beast, but Wild Blue Yonder doesn't have any of the former's clunky script issues.

The mighty Cribbens (another stalwart of those Dalek movies) was somewhere between your favourite character as a child and the Queen, in that he'd always been there. And this is literally his last appearance in anything. But you can say that he kind of went out with a bang.
I was born in the ‘60s, and Bernard Cribbins was part of my childhood. Doctor Who, The Wombles, novelty records. As you say, like The Queen, he was always there. So happy to see him still on good form right to the end.
One of my earliest childhood memories is Bernard Cribbins in Doctor Who film and of course the lovely voice of the wombles. It feels right that his final appearance is a reflection of where I first saw him. ❤❤
The captain is a Garm aka Tiger person. RTD teased their return on IG before the series aired. They were in a 5th Doctor episode "Terminus". For this specific episode he posted they were finally returning. Legendary troll of detail.
Interesting. In the BTS the set designer said the team has assumed the captain was equine, so they based all the alien language on how a horse would write with hooves!
I assumed they were Osiran, untlI saw the lettering / diagram on the screens. They are one of the spacetime travelling races. But the Garm, now that IS interesting. All this about 'anywhere, anywhen', has me interested. Extra details like superstition re-introduced, altered words like Mavity, and a disruption of the development of the Daleks, not to mention a flurry of activity in the DW comics about alternative realties such as the comics (the Star Beast is a comic character, from the time of Tom Baker). So we get alternative Doctors, like another Tennant, and maybe the comics, audio and film versions? What fun.
Love your reactions. Watched this with my cat called Donna sitting on my lap (yes I named her after Donna!) And she jumped on the keyboard at the climax and knocked the playback back to the start...but at leas there was no coffee!

I loved this episode so much! I’m going to be so depressed when the last special airs. I just love David Tennant’s Doctor more than anything. He’s always going to be my favorite Doctor.
As British entertainer Roy Castle (who, curiously, pops up as Ian in the first 1960s Dalek movie) used to sing: 'Dedication's what you need!' And there's a lot of it in the creation of this number. After the flash-bang comedy caper of 'The Star Beast', we lurch into hostile territory with a throwback reference to the Troughton era and a mystery as close in weirdness to 'Midnight' or even 'The Edge of Destruction'. Majestically played by our temporary cast - who are going to raise some tears next week - I think it's going to live long in the fan memory. For a hard minute there I thought they were actually going to leave Donna behind and set up a trap for the next episode. The cunning of RTD!
That final scene made me tear up a bit too as I wasn't expecting to see Bernard Cribbins in this special due to his passing. It was such a bittersweet moment to see! RIP! Also, the score was beautiful in this special. You can tell that Murray Gold, the original composer is back, at least for these specials.

This episode was very reminiscent of a Big Finish audio adventure called Scherzo, which was released in 2003 starring Paul McGann and India Fisher as the Eighth Doctor and companion Charlie Pollard, who had just faced a massive ancient threat to the Time Lords and time as their 40th anniversary special Zagreus and found themselves alone in the dark in an enclosed space outside of time, where a third consciousness seemingly generated spontaneously from theirs and became hostile. No other actors appeared in the release and it's often held as one of the most creative and media-specific stories told in the Doctor Who franchise.

So it is by no means a big deal, and if you have a problem with it, then I think you’re the problem. I loved this ep it was midnight levels of eerie. And you truly got a sense of how truly alien the No-things were a bit like flatline (is this a commentary on AI maybe?) The whole plot could’ve been a whole ass cosmic horror movie but it worked as an episode too. I really tried to like the last few series and it did have some gems I liked but this is the first time in a long time I felt like I was watching who again. Having a companion that was actually engaging and the doctor expressing something being jokey and serious. I liked the music as well Seguns music from series 11-13 was great but someone in sound production decided to turn it right down or not use it at all so it ends up not flowing scene to scene.
I got spoiled on knowing Bernard was seen on set for filming and even then I started teary eyed to a point I couldn't see anymore when he finally popped up

The only bit that spoiled this episode for me was the beginning, because it contradicts what we already knew of the Doctor meeting Newton. The 4th Doctor mentioned meeting him to Romana in The Pirate Planet, teller her he, "climbed up a tress and dropped and apple on his head." Romana assumes that is how he discovered gravity, until the Doctor clarifies, "No, he told me to clear off out of his tree. I explained it to him later at dinner." One of the best bits of dialogue in Who history undone. :( :P
That's just the nature of Doctor Who (or any time travel related piece of fiction, really) - time isn't linear, it's a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey...stuff, where everything that's ever happened or ever will, exists simultaneously - time is always in flux, people's personal timelines *can* change, especially for The Doctor because they've been basically everywhere. The 14th Doctor would likely still remember that incident with Newton that you mentioned, but now in this 'branch' (for lack of a better word) Newton won't experience that. In other words - it both happened and didn't happen, simultaneously.

I suppose my main issue with the change is, being from a script written by Douglas Adams, I've a soft spot for The Pirate Planet.

Now it feels like Doctor Who again. Last episode was really good, with one small thing that made me feel like I wasn't welcome anymore, but this felt like home. And I can think of no one better to enjoy it with than Sesskasays, my favorite soul to share it with since 'Rose', ep1.
This episode was like Midnight x10 on the creepy factor, and I loved it! (I'm also glad that they didn't spoil this one in any of the promos, it's nice that every once in a while we still get to have surprises)
I had the exact same reaction when they were standing looking at the edge - I must have seen the same dark part in the ship you did because I thought I saw a silouhette!!!
Have to admit I was a bit disappointed in this one. Not that I didn't enjoy it for what it was. Interesting enough to be a normal weekly episode, I just didn't think it had enough to it to be a 60th anniversary special. Also the whole "gravity, mavity" thing was just very silly indeed. Especially since Newton didn't invent the word, he just explained and quantified it's effects. Best bit of the episode was definitely seeing Wilf again. Absolutely wonderful. RIP Bernard Cribbins.
Newton was the one that named the force 'Gravity'. The word may have existed before, but had a different meaning. He was the one responsible for its use in this context. Therefore the name of the force is whatever he decided to call it, so the gravity/mavity thing definitely works in this narrative.
@@rikmoran3963 - The word gravity originates from "Gravitas" meaning weight. Hence the "force" resulting in weight was called gravity. Newton described and quantified this "force". Calling it "mavity" in this context makes no sense whatsoever. I put "force" in inverted commas, since gravity, of course, is more a property of the warping of space-time as described in Einstein's general theory of relativity.
I thought it was laughable. The cgi in this episode was comically bad. Even the shots of the endless hallway looked off, the perspective was at the wrong angle, making it look like Donna and the Doctor were standing on a ramp (from both directions, so it definitely wasn't intentional).
I’m so so please Bernard was able to come back, even if it was brief! My heart broke yet was so full of joy seeing him back on the screen god bless him x

The two of them did seem to share minds/reactions. So I’d subscribe to the theory of there only being one Not-Thing before the Doctor and Donna got there, and then it split into two creatures because there was two people. Although I’m not sure if the Not-Thing would know what the concept of multitudes are. Other than that I think you might be on to something.
I just went back and watched a couple of her early reactions like Father's Day from Series 1 and it's so different. She seemed so emotionless watching that and didn't seem to care about the show compared to how she is now

That episode was everything Doctor Who should've been the past 5 years and then some! And it was just Tennant and Tate in their element! The plot felt like a lot of stories from The Space Museum to Smile with the Doctor and co trying to solve a mystery of a futuristic location. The premise IS the reference. In spite of the Cgi the creatures where well conceived when the actors portrayed them as more malignant versions themselves. Sort of like the Thing. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the captain looked like it was the same species from The Cure of the Black Spot. The sacrificial Suicide fitted the ominous natural. I must admit that the Mavity joke wasn't good and they lost an opportunity to reference 4 throwing apples at Newton. I hope if it does come back it is in a strong way. Bit annoyed Moffat's run didn't get a mention especially since The Silence and Confession Dial are some of the darkest moments. Instead which they reference The Timeless Child ,the most divisive arc. That said the scene was handled well and brilliantly presented but most importantly THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE FLUX KILLED TRILLIONS WHEN CHIBNALL DIDN'T!!!! Seeing Wilf at the end was just icing on the cake.

@@isabelh5561 This is a late reply, but I believe it's not really a system, just the TARDIS itself will lock on to some gravity if knocked adrift unexpectedly, like it's not a system perse but more of a failsafe thing to prevent getting lost in the even the floor collapses around it, can't have her drifting off into space after all.

Bernard Cribbins appearing in the last scene made us all gape and gasp at this welcome ghost of what was: for a single moment we felt a companions wonder of time travelling back to see loved ones lost.
Wilfred!!!!!!! I’m so happy he got to see Donna and the Doctor together again. RIP Bernard Cribbins.
Sadly this was the final scene Bernard was able to film before he passed. So that was the final Wilf scene
Wild Blue Yonder was a weird, bold, exceptional story in the experimental vein of Midnight, The Girl Who Waited and Heaven Sent. It felt like the perfect blend of Event Horizon, Sunshine and The Thing, unnerving and weird which is where Doctor Who can sometimes be at its very best. Hope we get more stories like this in the future, and having Bernard Cribbins' Wilf show up one more time at the end was emotionally iconic. The plan was for Wild to show up a bit more in the next episode but this scene was the only one they were able to film with Cribbins as he, tragically, passed away very shortly afterwards. Bernard Cribbins was a true legend in every way.
It was a lot better than Event Horizon and Sunshine.
The Dr saying "If he runs out of time! The hostile actions ends! And a time machine, would know!". Gave me chills. Thats how you balance exposition. Because he was clearly only clarifying to himself but not spelling it out to viewers like Chibnall.

At a time when there seems to be SO MUCH negativity surrounding Doctor Who with "gatekeeping" fans ( decrying the show's supposed "doom"), it's so uplifting to experience your enthusiasm, to enjoy your sense of "love watching" (the opposite of "hate watching" (sad that such a term had to evolve)), finding the "good" in a story rather than the "bad". I so wish I had a friend like you with whom I could watch the show "side by side", both of us able to sync with the other's enjoyment in a positive feedback loop. I mean, I have friends, but physical distance prevents that kind of close quarters interaction.
Still doesn't change the fact rating are terrible and doctor Who will likely be cancelled for a few years since the audience walked away. Turning a blind eye to "bad writing" makes things worse and increases the likelihood you will not have a doctor who, star wars, rings of power, Marvel, Star Trek, the Witcher in the future.
@@abrahamflores2566you do realise live ratings mean nothing with streaming and catch-up being more popular nowadays. The star beast gained more popularity overnight than any Whittaker episode could get overall and I’m sure the cumulative ratings will be higher. The live ratings for this episode was slightly less but that was to be expected, however we can be sure the cumulative ratings for that will be decent.
not surprised it's doing better than when Whittaker was on but don't pretend bringing David Tenant is not affecting the rating. It's another nostalgia pull from desperate studios. Only time will prove me right when Doctor Who gets canceled for 3 plus years due low audience viewership. I know Doctor Who has always been progressive but now it's just too much on the nose and fans reject it. If you defend bad shows don't be surprised when it's canceled. If anything I am the one that doesn't want DW canceled.

And it filled to bursting all over again upon seeing your beautiful, perfect reaction when you saw our dear Wilf, “you beautiful soul”, as you so heartwarmingly called him, once more. It was so wonderful, Jess.

This is one of the most tense episodes of Doctor Who, in the same scary vibe as "Midnight" or "The Doctor's Wife", where Amy and Rory are being hunted in the Tardis by House. The body deformation, the Doctor and Donna having to face their internalized fears and thoughts in the form of their monster counterparts, being trapped in an eerie environment ... I'm all in. ❤ RTD is being bold with this story for the second special and I'm chuffed to bits!
It also shows the emotional progression of the Doctor. Between 10 and 14 there are subtle differences, ie 14 being more open emotionally and more mature. But also his fallibility, that he does not always get things right, like not recognizing Donna rightaway. I guess 14's character stems from David Tennant's age and experience as well as having gone through 11, 12 and 13, and he plays that out. It's not that 14 and 10 are different personalities with the same old face but 14 is rather an extension of 10, which just makes more sense.
And Wilfred Mott, such a bittersweet reunion, knowing that this was his final scene and there were more scenes intended in the last special but sadly did not happen because of Bernard Cribbins declining health. I salute you, Sir 🫡 RIP Bernard Cribbins! ❤
This was as if Midnight and The Almost People had a baby and Flatline was the midwife. Deliciously weird and creepy
When Donna asked what she missed in fifteen years, the music from Face the Raven when Clara dies is playing! The episode with a countdown and the Doctor NOT being able to save his companion.
The ending to this episode was without a doubt the most tense I’ve felt watching this show in so many years. My heart dropped so hard watching Donna standing there watching the explosion get closer.
I should have known she wasn’t gonna die but they honestly had me fooled for a second

Catherine Tate's acting in that final scene was SO GOOD!
I also knew they wouldn't kill off a companion like that, but dear god, her desperate crying at thin air, telling the Doctor that he picked up the wrong one, and the fear and sorrow as the explosion rocked the long hallway--my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach in a way that I haven't experienced in a while.

Technically this joke doesn't work because gravity actually is derived from gravitas not the other way round, but since the joke in the episode is equally flawed, who cares I'm having fun 😜
I did not know that bernard was still alive during filming so last episode i was like aww they mentioned him because they cant show him. The fact that he just popped on screen and i got the single best cinematic closure ive felt since the One ring was detroyed like healed some part of me. I dont know but i feel like it was such a special moment. Wilf is a legend.
In the behind the scenes video for this episode they say this was the final scene he filmed before he died. He was supposed to have more scenes but he was just too ill to film them. Leaving his final scene in the episode was the best decision ever
Afraid to say this is the last we see of Wilf as Bernard became too unwell to record anymore scenes for the next episode. That being said it was so lovely to have him back one last time. RIP

I loved the cosmic horror of this episode. The disquiet and dread. The absolute terror in Donna as she was left behind. Good god that was good!
This has to be my favourite reaction to this special. You were captured by every beat the writers wanted to get the audience with. A truly excellent episode and an excellent reaction thank you :)
I loved this episode so much. As soon as the Doctor came back into the orange room, sat on floor and talked to Donna, I just knew it wasn't the Doctor. I had Ark in Space vibes at the start, a bit of Silence in the Library, a bit of Midnight, and a hint of The Impossible Planet. Also originality. So creepy, so unsettling. Wonderful. And Wilf at the end was the icing on the cake.

Yes!! The way David just slid down the wall and stayed totally still listening to Donna in that scene is what made that acting for me. Somehow that is just not the Doctor.
Bernard Cribbins filmed that scene and past away a few weeks later. It was amazing to see his last acting role being a show he loved. He had also starred in the 1960s Dalek invasion Earth movie with Peter Cushin as The Doctor. A true Who legend.

Very glad that this was a step up from last week's episode. Not that I didn't enjoy The Star Beast, but Wild Blue Yonder doesn't have any of the former's clunky script issues.

The mighty Cribbens (another stalwart of those Dalek movies) was somewhere between your favourite character as a child and the Queen, in that he'd always been there. And this is literally his last appearance in anything. But you can say that he kind of went out with a bang.
I was born in the ‘60s, and Bernard Cribbins was part of my childhood. Doctor Who, The Wombles, novelty records. As you say, like The Queen, he was always there. So happy to see him still on good form right to the end.
One of my earliest childhood memories is Bernard Cribbins in Doctor Who film and of course the lovely voice of the wombles. It feels right that his final appearance is a reflection of where I first saw him. ❤❤

The captain is a Garm aka Tiger person. RTD teased their return on IG before the series aired. They were in a 5th Doctor episode "Terminus".
For this specific episode he posted they were finally returning. Legendary troll of detail.
Interesting. In the BTS the set designer said the team has assumed the captain was equine, so they based all the alien language on how a horse would write with hooves!
I assumed they were Osiran, untlI saw the lettering / diagram on the screens. They are one of the spacetime travelling races. But the Garm, now that IS interesting.
All this about 'anywhere, anywhen', has me interested. Extra details like superstition re-introduced, altered words like Mavity, and a disruption of the development of the Daleks, not to mention a flurry of activity in the DW comics about alternative realties such as the comics (the Star Beast is a comic character, from the time of Tom Baker).
So we get alternative Doctors, like another Tennant, and maybe the comics, audio and film versions? What fun.

I loved this episode so much! I’m going to be so depressed when the last special airs. I just love David Tennant’s Doctor more than anything. He’s always going to be my favorite Doctor.
As British entertainer Roy Castle (who, curiously, pops up as Ian in the first 1960s Dalek movie) used to sing: 'Dedication's what you need!' And there's a lot of it in the creation of this number. After the flash-bang comedy caper of 'The Star Beast', we lurch into hostile territory with a throwback reference to the Troughton era and a mystery as close in weirdness to 'Midnight' or even 'The Edge of Destruction'. Majestically played by our temporary cast - who are going to raise some tears next week - I think it's going to live long in the fan memory. For a hard minute there I thought they were actually going to leave Donna behind and set up a trap for the next episode. The cunning of RTD!
Everyone cried when they see Wilf…and I cry right along with them.
That final scene made me tear up a bit too as I wasn't expecting to see Bernard Cribbins in this special due to his passing. It was such a bittersweet moment to see! RIP! Also, the score was beautiful in this special. You can tell that Murray Gold, the original composer is back, at least for these specials.
I’m not ready to say goodbye to David Tennant again. It’s very annoying lol think it’s a testament to how good he is as the doctor. I’m sure 15 will be amazing but I’ve fallen in love with 14 and excuse the pun. I don’t want him to go

This episode was very reminiscent of a Big Finish audio adventure called Scherzo, which was released in 2003 starring Paul McGann and India Fisher as the Eighth Doctor and companion Charlie Pollard, who had just faced a massive ancient threat to the Time Lords and time as their 40th anniversary special Zagreus and found themselves alone in the dark in an enclosed space outside of time, where a third consciousness seemingly generated spontaneously from theirs and became hostile. No other actors appeared in the release and it's often held as one of the most creative and media-specific stories told in the Doctor Who franchise.

@@Rocket1377 The joke was used a grand total of three times in the span of a 60 minute episode, I will agree that it wasn’t very funny or all that necessary, but it takes up probably around 1% of the whole episode. So it is by no means a big deal, and if you have a problem with it, then I think you’re the problem. I loved this ep it was midnight levels of eerie. And you truly got a sense of how truly alien the No-things were a bit like flatline (is this a commentary on AI maybe?) The whole plot could’ve been a whole ass cosmic horror movie but it worked as an episode too.
I really tried to like the last few series and it did have some gems I liked but this is the first time in a long time I felt like I was watching who again. Having a companion that was actually engaging and the doctor expressing something being jokey and serious.
I liked the music as well Seguns music from series 11-13 was great but someone in sound production decided to turn it right down or not use it at all so it ends up not flowing scene to scene.
waited 15 years for this last 2 minutes of the episode....just AMAZING! :)
I got spoiled on knowing Bernard was seen on set for filming and even then I started teary eyed to a point I couldn't see anymore when he finally popped up

The only bit that spoiled this episode for me was the beginning, because it contradicts what we already knew of the Doctor meeting Newton. The 4th Doctor mentioned meeting him to Romana in The Pirate Planet, teller her he, "climbed up a tress and dropped and apple on his head." Romana assumes that is how he discovered gravity, until the Doctor clarifies, "No, he told me to clear off out of his tree. I explained it to him later at dinner." One of the best bits of dialogue in Who history undone. :( :P
That's just the nature of Doctor Who (or any time travel related piece of fiction, really) - time isn't linear, it's a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey...stuff, where everything that's ever happened or ever will, exists simultaneously - time is always in flux, people's personal timelines *can* change, especially for The Doctor because they've been basically everywhere. The 14th Doctor would likely still remember that incident with Newton that you mentioned, but now in this 'branch' (for lack of a better word) Newton won't experience that. In other words - it both happened and didn't happen, simultaneously.

I suppose my main issue with the change is, being from a script written by Douglas Adams, I've a soft spot for The Pirate Planet.
Great episode. So lovely to see Wilfred Mott again, and also so sad that Bernard Cribbins who played him passed away last year. Plus I wasn't expecting to see that very low flying plane at he end too
Now it feels like Doctor Who again. Last episode was really good, with one small thing that made me feel like I wasn't welcome anymore, but this felt like home. And I can think of no one better to enjoy it with than Sesskasays, my favorite soul to share it with since 'Rose', ep1.

Have to admit I was a bit disappointed in this one. Not that I didn't enjoy it for what it was. Interesting enough to be a normal weekly episode, I just didn't think it had enough to it to be a 60th anniversary special. Also the whole "gravity, mavity" thing was just very silly indeed. Especially since Newton didn't invent the word, he just explained and quantified it's effects. Best bit of the episode was definitely seeing Wilf again. Absolutely wonderful. RIP Bernard Cribbins.
Newton was the one that named the force 'Gravity'. The word may have existed before, but had a different meaning. He was the one responsible for its use in this context. Therefore the name of the force is whatever he decided to call it, so the gravity/mavity thing definitely works in this narrative.
@@rikmoran3963 - The word gravity originates from "Gravitas" meaning weight. Hence the "force" resulting in weight was called gravity. Newton described and quantified this "force". Calling it "mavity" in this context makes no sense whatsoever. I put "force" in inverted commas, since gravity, of course, is more a property of the warping of space-time as described in Einstein's general theory of relativity.
The body horror in this episode was absolutely fucking outstanding. First time that Doctor Who has ever made me feel genuinely uncomfortable.
I thought it was laughable. The cgi in this episode was comically bad. Even the shots of the endless hallway looked off, the perspective was at the wrong angle, making it look like Donna and the Doctor were standing on a ramp (from both directions, so it definitely wasn't intentional).

I think there was one Not-Thing before they got there; it needed time to split because there was two of them
The two of them did seem to share minds/reactions. So I’d subscribe to the theory of there only being one Not-Thing before the Doctor and Donna got there, and then it split into two creatures because there was two people. Although I’m not sure if the Not-Thing would know what the concept of multitudes are. Other than that I think you might be on to something.
I like your repeated mentions of the spa in the Tardis. Reminded me immediately of the awesome story you wrote.

I just went back and watched a couple of her early reactions like Father's Day from Series 1 and it's so different. She seemed so emotionless watching that and didn't seem to care about the show compared to how she is now

That episode was everything Doctor Who should've been the past 5 years and then some! And it was just Tennant and Tate in their element!
The plot felt like a lot of stories from The Space Museum to Smile with the Doctor and co trying to solve a mystery of a futuristic location. The premise IS the reference.
In spite of the Cgi the creatures where well conceived when the actors portrayed them as more malignant versions themselves. Sort of like the Thing. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the captain looked like it was the same species from The Cure of the Black Spot. The sacrificial Suicide fitted the ominous natural.
I must admit that the Mavity joke wasn't good and they lost an opportunity to reference 4 throwing apples at Newton. I hope if it does come back it is in a strong way.
Bit annoyed Moffat's run didn't get a mention especially since The Silence and Confession Dial are some of the darkest moments. Instead which they reference The Timeless Child ,the most divisive arc. That said the scene was handled well and brilliantly presented but most importantly THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE FLUX KILLED TRILLIONS WHEN CHIBNALL DIDN'T!!!!
Seeing Wilf at the end was just icing on the cake.
