  • This sight reading help is for those at level 2 (NY state) which is most beginners. This level has no shifting, eighths, quarters and half notes and uses the G, D and A strings. I've chosen a sight reading line that meets these requirements and walk you through the method I teach all my students for approaching the sight reading element of the audition.
The elements of the video (jump in at any point):
2:55 clap and learn to decode the line
7:37 sing the line - this is not solfege, this is more rough out the shape
8:40 play the sight reading along with me. If you choose to start here, pause on the screen to look over the line for a few seconds, then hit play. I will count us in for 4 and we're off!
Sight reading is a SKILL you can master. It takes practice just like learning you solo or scales. So do not be put off if you don't "get" sight reading right away. You absolutely CAN improve at it. I have a 3 step process: 1. clap 2. sing 3. play ....and before we even clap, I show you how to look for places in the line to "decode". Start learning that decoding idea NOW and as you move up in level, you will find sight reading gets easier and easier.
There is a book that I have recently found by Paul Harris called "Improve Your Sight Reading" that you can find here on amazon for about $13 (do not buy the $900 one!! same thing, but more expensive, but why??)
