  • PR 6.2 Levada do Alecrim this is generally a less busy Levada hike in comparison with the nearby Levada das 25 Fontes. Yet it is a beautiful Levada trail, and you have many options depending on your fitness level. Once you arrive at the parking area and the start of the Levada don't be discouraged with the number of cars parked next to Route 105. Many of the folks will have ventured down to the other Levada walks and hikes. You have 2 options to do this Levada. Option 1 is for those who like to avoid any ascents and descents and the dreaded stairs. Option one is basically in and out at the end you will come to a nice water fall and lagoons where you can enjoy a lunch break then double back to where you started. Option 2 is to do option one first, then double back to the trail sign that will direct you to Verada da Lagoa do Vento. This will take you to Rabaçal! This section will much more challenging as you will encounter steep declines (steps) and some accents. You also have the option to at one intersection to head down to the Lagoa do Vento where you will see a nice waterfall and a a great spot to have a rest. It’s a step detour and then you will have to climb back up to continue the trail to Rabaçal. This will be about an 8 k hike if you do the detour to Lagoa Vento. Once you arrive in Rabaçal, there is a cafe that serves refreshments and unless you want to walk back up to the car parking area (about 2km) you can take a bus for 3 euros per person that will take you up to your car. The shuttle runs all day on demand.Things to remember:
-Good shoes preferabley waterproof, the day we went the trail was muddy and wet
-Bring extra layers of clothing, at 1000m ASL, temperatures can change
-Bring a rain jacket, Madeira weather is unpredicable
-Start the walk in the morning, it will take 1h to drive there from Funchal
-Watch your steps, vertigo is not an issue on this hike but always watch your step!
