- Much has been said and many memes have been made regarding the Ford GT40's appearance at Rome Circuit in Gran Turismo 2. An oversight causes the Vector M12 LM Edition to appear as an opponent in the 30 Laps of Trial Mountain, a event restricted to cars below 295 HP. While the M12 has over 600, creating an almost unbeatable situation. However, I tried to beat it in this video.

The thing about the GT40 is, while difficult, there's a lot of options to beat it. Not so much with the M12. For this one, you had to hope it didn't appear in your line-up, which is rather time consuming as it appears often.
Praise for the green bmw, he knew you were the only chance of beating the m12, and went in for the final block

I've watched several of these Trial Mountain Endurance vs. the Vector M12 LM Edition videos. This was the most exciting finish out of all of them. Most of the other videos go more in depth into tuning their car and win by a wider margin. Well done.

i remember that, by the time i saw the V12 in the camera that was approaching for the final 1,2,3 countdown, i thought, ok this is impossible. So i tried with another car , the Mini Cooper , that red taxi. i think it costs 500.000, when i reentered the race, the V12 wasnt there. i beat it easily. I did not know until now, 20 plus years later, that something like this was possible! Incredible job mate! well done
Yeah, the rally Mini Cooper is a beast actually. It's a shame it never was in any future Gran Turismo games.
Considered that the M12 never wim anything in its class in real life, i say this is just compentsation

@@hybridAbsol No, this race is limited to cars below 295 HP. A RUF BTR cannot enter this exact race, there are other races where it can enter and the M12 appears as an opponent (GT world championship, All Stars)
this is the same feeling I had playing gran turismo all stars championship in gt4 using the esperante gt1. this endurance race looks so difficult
It can be! It's hard to keep a constant pace, I barely made it in the end, really.
Dude. The last 2 laps were intense. I've raced quite a few like this. There's a race in GT4 that is a rally one where you race the Escudo. I used I think a 96 GTO/3000GT. Beating the historic racing car cup is terribly difficult without a lot or money. I think I beat it with the 1967 Mercury Cougar. There is also one or two where you go up against the McLaren F1 racecar. The older GT40, the 1970 Toyota, and the 2J are the tough older cars to beat. I can't remember which GT it was, but racing against the Nissan R390 road car was also difficult. Good times.
Trial Mountain 30 Laps aside, my choice for most interesting endurance race in Gran Turismo 2 is Millennium in Rome. The same glitch that displaces the M12 LM in US 1.0 (which is meant for MiR interestingly enough) also displaces cars from other endurance races. The car that ends up at Rome is an STP Taisan Viper GT from Laguna Seca 200 Miles, and the reason I find that mismatch so interesting is that the Viper, despite not being meant for it, does great at Rome. It can easily hold its own against both R390 GT1s, and if it starts at the front of the grid it will happily lead the pack for a lap or 2 even warding off far superior cars like the Venturi 600LM and Toyota GT-One '98. It actually fits so well that when playing MiR I always have trouble deciding which revision of GT2 to play because I have to pick between the M12 LM and Taisan Viper, and they're both so fun and interesting to have on track that its a legitimately hard choice.
Ah yes, the STP Viper is pretty competitive as I assume it's similar to the Oreca Viper, which is part of the LM - All Stars line-ups used in GT2. Even if, this thing takes the cake for me.

this looks like it's some kind of bug, have you noticed how there's a Citroen xantia running in the special stage route 5 race? yeah, I think there was a switch of roles
It is, due to an oversight with the first NTSC-US release of GT2, the endurance line-ups are broken. Long story short, starting from Grand Valley, the event below it will have a car from the endurance event above it. The Xantia is intended to be an opponent in Trial Mountain, and the M12 in Rome. This was fixed on later releases, of course. I wanted to add it, but I felt it dragged the video down. I'll save it for my deep dive on GT2.
That was over 20 years ago I win this race... I think I just used the race spec. 320i to hell with it without pitting. Which turn out leaving a decent gap in last lap with ease.
The first time I ran this race I didn't pay attention.
I passed all the cars in front of me and everything was going normally, until after a while I saw the position indicator and it said "2nd".
I thought: "wtf!?". Then I saw that a GT40 was in first place. I had no chance, I gave up.
I got revenge by beating two GT-40s together at Apricot Hill with my New Beetle.
I still play GT2 almost daily, I started when I was 8 years old with GT1, 33 now. ♥

I did it with yellow Spoon Civic, there was a Tom's fwd coupe capable of doing it as well. Race modded Evo 5 and comparable Imprezzas are the best choice imo, they can hit 1.21s laps if i remember correctly.
The Evo and Imprezas are pretty good choices for this event indeed, I should try the Spoon Civic, it seems a bit low on torque for the uphill sections.
Indeed spoon civic is excellent as it can fight cars above this level in more races. This car can allow you to beat half of game where low HP is required. Yes, it will have garbage top speed but cornering and acceleration is out of this world as for that horsepower.
Yes, that Tom's T111 was a strong contender too.
Tom’s T111 and Spoon Civic are the best FWD cars in GT2. Both can fight any supercar

Awesome achievement. I don't have a save in the unpatched NTSC version but if I did I'd attempt the challenge with a race modded Dodge Concept Car for almost the best maximum power to weight ratio I can get (weighs 873 kg in race spec). There are a couple of other lightweight cars that can get to 300 hp but they're either a different drivetrain layout like Civics (I prefer FR for endurance because it provides the most even tire wear, also a lot of lightweight MR cars like the Lotus Europa or Lancia Stratos have dodgy handling), like to spin the tires unnecessarily like the '83 RX-7 or S13 Silvias, or don't feel like they have any oomph under the hood despite the hp figures like MX-5s. The Concept Car is an absolute rocket.
The Stratos has terrible handling indeed, we were playing with it on one of my streams. Terminal understeer. It was one of the first cars I considered for this race, but after some attempts it proved to be a waste of time.

The M12 is on the Ferrari™ strategy, a silly 2-stop. But honestly, well done! I thought this might go down to the wire thanks to the pit stop silliness, and it did.

Some trivia, none of these misplaced cars show up in the Japanese version of the game. Due to missing entries (no Acura nor Lexus) if the game loads a blank entry, instead of crashing, it loads from the top of the next list. In Trial Mountain's case, that's the GT World Championship, and the first car is the Vector M12 LM.

Thanks! In the end, I'm glad I found the right car for the challenge.
I used a red Evo 2 for this endurance race from what I recall. Got it spec'd for the event and made sure I put the best handling parts and lowered the weight as much I could. The first time I did this event there was not much problems considering all the racers were what they should be. The second time I did this for a prize car I faced the M12 and had to use a bit of Forza tactics + staying out as long as I could with hard racing tires to stretch my lead the best I could. Since at the time, the M12 was being slowed down by the rest of the field in the twistier section of the course.
In a weird way, the M12 being here feels like Ridge Racer Revolution where the Angelus would just appear in a time trial event and over power you with speed. Until you get to the end and win by being consistent on the course.
If you are consistent, odds are you'll be fine indeed. Besides, a bit of contact is to be expected with this thing.

Ah Gran Turismo 2, the only game where rubber banding is so bad that 70 horsepower Kei cars can pose a threat to a 92 Celica GT-Four

2 stop strategy is faster if you pit on lap 11 for mediums and then again on lap 22 for softs
Thing is, GT2 doesn't allow you to change compounds mid-race.
@@YellowbirdYT i remember doing the grand valley endurance in a skyline race car having manual gears doing 6000rpm shifts and I thought it was tyre compound selectable if you had bought those tyres for the car, started on hard tyres for that event. Mind you it was a long time ago now so my memory might not be serving me correctly lol
@@diesel-technology5507 Yeah, in Gran Turismo 2 you can only change tires on the settings tab, not during a race. However, in Gran Turismo 4 you can change tire compounds mid-race!
i vaguely remember fighting a 911 around that course on hard tires with no stops to win that one

I ever beaten Eli Ayase's Vector M12 LM using ANY race modified cars that have within 295bhp. Man, Eli Ayase's VECTOR M12 LM in GT2 Original Version can be a huge nightmare in Trial Mountain 30lap race. Harashooooo!
Ah yes, I remember those days... before GranTurismo 4 , You had to be all Aspec , Bspec mode was a welcomed feature
B-Spec is a curious thing, for one the idea of training a driver is fun. But at the same time... I want to drive, shame there are 24hrs races.

Have you ever used the spoon s2k from the prize car? Is it viable or not?
I think you have a better chance with the off-the-dealer S2000, as you can apply a racing modification to it. The NA engine suffers a little in the uphill sections, but I think it should be doable as I tried the dealership S2000 and it did well.

Thanks! The M12 only appears in the first NTSC-US release of GT2 (1.0) - You can also restart the event until it doesn't appear, that's how I did it ages ago.

I was difficult for me to first time race endurance both and also easy to beat m12 and ford gt40. Also I used nissan r390 GT1 road car 97 version then. I used also the Toyota gtone 98 race version for fast lap 90 with Suzuki escudo pike peak about 985 hp
...this is literally a Boss Battle.

I wonder to be honest. I recall doing all endurance races in GT1 and GT2 back in PS1 era but my memory might be failing me. I will have to try GT1 and GT2 again soon i guess.
They aren't too long, the longest ones take at least 2hrs. Give them a try, they're fun!
Is a tuned Motorsport Elise good for this race aswell?
Not really, the entire Elise line in GT2 has terrible handling for some bizarre reason. On top of that, given trial mountain is a bumpy track, they are even worse. It was an option I considered but turned out to be scrapped.

I'm not completely sure if my memory serves me correctly but I think I did this challenge race with Subaru Impreza rally car which had like 290 hp and won by a wiiiiiiide margin.
While the actual WRC cars have like 400 HP when you buy them, modifying an off-the-dealer STI will give you those numbers and it's pretty competitive as well.
@@YellowbirdYT Yeah it's funny that the dealer shows 290 bhp or something like that before you buy the car but after you have bought it and look at it in the garage it's 470+ bhp if I remember correctly. But somehow I still managed to enter that race with the car without modifications or anything like that.
Of course it has been around 20 years since I played it but I can still vividly remember that was the car I used. That Subaru was miles faster through the corner filled sections and the only place where the Vector was able to close the gap mildly was the long back straight with the tunnel. I think I did not lap the Vector but won by like half a lap or something.
This has to be what I did. I used awds for the most part. I remember beating all races in GT2 and don't even remember this race at all. It had to have been so easy it didn't even touch my radar in terms of difficulty. Must've used AWD, probably a subie.
Last time I did that raced I used race hards you can go about 15 to 17 laps on race heard
In Gran Turismo 2, due to some bizarre reason, all racing slicks have the same lifespan.
If you use the Tommy Kaira M13 you won't struggle. I didn't see the Vector there.

You should try with the honda s2000 with super soft tires... pit in laps 12 and 24... or 8, 16 and 21..
Due to an oversight, all tires have the same lifespan in GT2 and I wasn't aware when I did this race. The S2000 is pretty strong, it does suffer a bit with its NA engine, as it has lower torque for the uphill sections. But it should be possible.
Give it a try.. might surprise you.. very good top speed despite its low power... but that is what makes it so good at this endurance... almost no oversteer, FR and not so heavy... and if im not mistaken, you can turn into race car and adjust downforce
Yea that glitch sucks, the best way I seen to fight it is to save before you go in there and quit and go back in and reload until it doesn't show up, the last couple of times I played it, it wasn't there
Yeah, it's easy to avoid it really. But you can get unlucky and have a few line-ups with it.
I swear this game cheats. It would be the epitome of “One must perform above and beyond their assigned class (in terms of cups with limitation restrictions).
While the GT2 AI is rather easy, it does have these moments where one can have absurd challenges with it.
Did you win the Vector after the race?
No, the Vector can be bought in its respective dealership. I was rewarded with a A Denso Sard Supra.
Honda civic 3 door si '93 can go sub 1:24 on that event, someone made it on rx7 '83.
The Civics are pretty good, actually, and so is the RX-7. Racing mods are busted.
Yo elegía un Skyline R32 GTS-T, en su máximo y sobre todo neumáticos duros para aguantar lo que mas podía, mi estrategia era no frenar mucho doblar poco y deslizarme lo que mas pudiera, elegía cambiar neumáticos cada 12 vueltas exactas. si no fallaba ni una vuelta lograba alejarme del M12 con dificultad pero lo lograba. las curvas son tus amigas y en recta no pelees contra el M12. tu batalla son en las curvas. ahí tienes ventajas sobre el M12.
Todos los neumaticos tienen la misma vida util en GT2, por lo tanto uno puede elegir los mas blandos. No sabia esto al grabar mi video.
@@YellowbirdYT Nunca me duraban tanto los blandos. A más 7 u 8 vueltas. Por eso iba por los más rígidos podia siempre aguantar hasta más la vuelta 13 sin que los neumáticos se volvieran mantequilla...

Yes, it's present on GT1 as well, you can really feel its influence if you are trying to turn your car around.

The ZZ-S is a really good car, I didn't like its handling for Trial Mountain so I used the S15. Still, it's a really OP car.
@@YellowbirdYT Yup, totally agree that ZZ-S's bad handling on this track is caused by these bumpy sectors like the first tunnel after the long left turn. All MR cars have the same issue on this track. Anyway, great driving man, have you ever tried to race this challenge as fast as possible?
I think what causes trouble for MR's in that opening section is stiff front dampers. Even when set to 2, the car feels way more likely to lose grip for some reason. You can test it in the first corner at Red Rock, the car should stick to the road a bit better with 1 front bound and rebound. The rear isn't impacted as much and you can set it to around 5 for better mid-corner grip. Soft rear springs help too, but the ZZ-S is quite stable and can run around 6.0 without much issues.

Maybe that's what I did? I remember no endurance race being troublesome in GT2 I whored the escudo as much as possible.
It's a bit triggering how you end every single sentence with the same inflection. "I lapped him agAAAAAAAIN." The music fits because it's just as repetitive.
