    It’s seems to be an another Weber’s law implication : it gets exponentially harder for a mind to calculate the execution, the straighter a shot is

    • @BradGilroy
      @BradGilroy Рік тому +1

      Okay but can we call it Weber's paradox?

    • @chriswright8114
      @chriswright8114 Рік тому +1

      @@BradGilroy no. there's nothing paradoxical about it. it makes perfect sense. if I showed you one rack of balls spread over the table, then showed you two racks spread out on it, I would expect you to know there's an extra rack fairly easily. however, if I had a dozen racks, and then showed you thirteen, I would be surprised if you could tell without counting. not sure where you think the paradox is.

    • @BradGilroy
      @BradGilroy Рік тому

      @@chriswright8114 the paradox has nothing to do with calculating the number of balls on a table. The paradox is that straight shots intiitively sound like they would be easier than cuts and yet the straighter a shot is, the more difficult it seems to be to execute properly.

    • @chriswright8114
      @chriswright8114 Рік тому

      @@BradGilroy guess you don't understand analogies. let me rephrase that so you will. the "number of balls on the table" was for any changes you might make while aiming. the "one or two racks on the table" is your straight in shot. "a dozen racks" is a cut shot. my point was that any change in power, English, aim, etc... is going to be way more noticeable on the straight shot.
      sure, you can say "straight shots are harder when they should be easy" and it sounds like a paradox. but it isn't correct. instead, say "straight shots have a much lower margin for error" and you can understand it better.

    • @BradGilroy
      @BradGilroy Рік тому +1

      @@chriswright8114 well that was a little patronizing...no need to be disrespectful to strangers on UA-cam.
      The definition of analogy and paradox do not elude me - what you are calling your analogy is not in fact analogous and so I was confused. It seems self-evident that you could more easily discern the difference between having 30 balls vs 15 on a table than the difference between 195 balls vs 180.
      The definition of a paradox is "a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true". If players generally perceive straight shots to be more difficult than cuts and that seems counterintuitive, that would make it paradoxical by definition.
      To the degree that the game of pool is grounded in physics and the the same laws of physics apply regardless of whether you are shooting a straight shot or a cut, the margin for error is identical if the object ball maintains its same position.
      I believe the reason you consider a straight shot to have a lower margin of error is simply that you have a perfect reference for what a straight line looks like and any deviation seems quite obvious. Compare this to a cut of 37° where you aren't staring down your cue. You simply won't perceive that deviation as readily from your intended 37° because you're not staring down that line.
      Anywho, we're both wasting our time here. I hope you have a great day and that you win your next 100 racks Chris. 🙂

    Another way to find the center of the cue ball is the put yor tip at the bottom of the cue ball where it meets the cloth then move the cue straight up to where you want to hit.

  • @james_robnett

    I had a different approach. The brain is really good at arbitrary precision so I'd do 2 things. I'd aim for a very specific part of the pocket not the pocket itself (way too big a target). Secondly I'd find a point a foot or 2 (or more) past the object ball to aim at. You tend to be able to hit a target by about the same amount regardless of distance so you can 1/2 or 1/4 your error at the object ball.
    The other thing I used to do is simply shoot rack after rack of 8 ball on a snooker table. Switching back to an 8 ball table for 8 ball or snooker balls for a game of snooker makes the pockets feel huge.

    By the laws of physics, the aiming ball is going to go towards the direction determined by the alignment of the centers of mass of the two balls upon impact. But it’s easier said then done.

    A little correction:
    In some situations, missing to the same side indicates a slight problem of "preferred eye" syndrom.
    What it means is that if you always miss your object ball to the left, it means the cue stick should be a slightly on the right of your chin. Maybe a milimiter. (Right eye preferred by the brain)
    And same as for opposite. If you miss always to the right, the stick should be a bit on the left of the chin. Closer to the left eye.
    Obviously.. Sometimes its neither, and the missing occurs cause of our stance alignment.
    For example, people that tend to place the closest foot to the table too far from the other foot.. Will realize al they had to do is shortening their distance between their feet, and stand more "squared" in their stance.
    A lot of snooker players adopted that, since it causes not only the chin to be on the stock perfectly, but also the eyes should be perfectly vertically to the stick.
    Thats the only way to *actually* test your "straightness*.
    That and the fact you hit the center of the ball of course.

    The main fundamental here is stance. If you watch the older tape the majority of the pros around the time they brought in the new lighter ball palls, pros like Spencer, mans and Reardon did have the lead leg all the way out to the side. Both feet were kept at shoulder width with the lead leg out a foot and the half which would keep your cue arm naturally aligned with your head.

    I have a WAY easier method, when you setup for you shot, lay your cue over the cue ball, and then as you set your bridge make sure as you setup into the shot that you still maintain the same line. In fact you should be aiming the shot before you even get to the table, looking at the object ball to determine the aim point to get to the pocket. then it is simply a matter of laying the cue in the shot and bringing your body to it.

    I have never played snooker or pool and I found this video randomly through the alrgorithm.
    That being said, the way I am feeling my way through this, and I may be completely wrong, but is the translation of point of impact to the vector of rebound not linearly proportional? For instance, if you want the ball to go completely straight, one millimeter to the side of the center of the ball will result in, for example, a 5 degree deviation from the center line, whereas if you want the ball to rebound to the right by 40 degrees, then the same miss by 1 millimeter will result in a smaller deviation of, for exmaple, 3 degrees.
    Is my intuition correct here or am I absolutely wrong?

    i think i have difficulty finding my vision centre, here is an example.
    when i lineup with no chin things are perfect but as soon as i touch my centre chin after few features the butt of the cue goes offline and i pause at that moment the butt of the cue is offline towards my right which poins the cue tip to the left.
    i tried with right chin and it brings the butt even more, i tried with my left chin and its less offline than when i cue under right chin. however i cannot decide if left chin holds the cue online of aim perfect of centre chin. bcaz i am so used to playing with centre chin for years and its hard to know which position is best to hold the cue online even after featuring...
    another example is that if i put the cue on baulk line and touch my centre chin, i can see the baulk line from left side of the cue, so the cue is not covering the baulk line, this is why i am quite sure it has to do something with my vision centre, but as i said i am so used to playing with centre chin that if i use my right chin and left chin the object still looks online however in reality the butt of the cue is offline, but i cannot tell which chin position holds the cue online of aim
