Hi. I’m not a sewer, but this came up on UA-cam and I was curious what a “walkaway dress” would be. You have such an engaging personality, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole video. You are obviously very talented and the dress looks amazing on you.
Same here! I’m jealous at your talent. I actually found the pattern on ETSY for 17.00, which I thought was an okay price. What I am wondering, is it one piece? What I mean, do you step into it, then pull the top over your head to secure in front? Thanks for the demo. Love it!
@@Bella-gj6wc It's like a bib front apron, except that instead of tying it in the back there are these extra sections that come around your body and then button in the front!
I think you did a fine job, and yes with some torso and shoulder adjustments it will fit you nicely. The extra waist buttons will make it more stable, this dress was designed for someone with a 1950s wasp waist, don't forget, lol! I am glad you mentioned that it looks best with a petticoat. I watch channels where people express disappointment in how these vintage garments look when sewn up, and complain that they are limp or frumpy, etc...I think modern people are missing something here. Namely, to get a true vintage look you need correct undergarments to act as a foundation. My grandmother was always going on about proper "foundational layers" such as bras, slips and girdles. It's hard for us to believe now, but even slender women wore girdles back then, to nip in the waist and create the desired 1950s silhouette. Without these ingredients the garment will not wear as expected. It was also much more common back then to starch and iron cotton fabric, which gave it more body. I enjoyed watching you create your own version of the Walk Away Dress.
@@susanrussell8195I totally agree! I found the first comment honest and wholesome. She only agreed with the shoulder comment, which in my opinion was completely honest and needed. The shoulders were too long and while the channel stated she did it thinking she needed to but, found it to be a mistake. We can all agree the dress looks nice on her but, would look lovely more tailored to her shoulders!
Great post and delightfully thorough! So interesting to have this amount of information to ponder as we watch our favorite channel! I’m remembering the many layers Mom and my gramma’s wore under their dresses…!
I did a double take when I saw this as a video on UTube! Years ago my mother was quite the accomplished seamstress who was self taught. She made a number of pieces of her wardrobe. She actually made this dress for herself back then. To give you some perspective, I believe that was in the 50’s. I am now 75!
Wow! Thank you for sharing! That’s one of the things I love about sewing from vintage patterns, is wondering about the many versions of the same dress that have come before!
At 72 , I too have wonderful memories of my mother's beautiful sewing ! While we did not need to make our clothing to save money , we did it to be unique , creative & have our own special looks . From formals to swimwear , we loved choosing patterns & fabrics ! I showed horses & just like my dresses , you didn't want to have the same outfit as anyone else . Sewing is a lifelong skill & enjoy learning more . 💗
Oh my God! My mom used to wear those dresses around the house she was continually sewing things from the patterns and I remember her wearing those dresses like in the afternoons or whatever after she had done her chores she said it was a wonderful way to relax and they were comfortable and easy to make. She sewed me a sun dress with yellow daisy pattern on it.
You can use 2 different colour fabrics for front and back for totally new look. Red satin front and black velvet for back would be a holiday glam look. Making it reversible you could use 2 lightweight fabrics.
Beautiful! As a beginning seamstress I’m impressed with you finishing in less than 3hrs 😅😅 I always wondered what the pattern would look like in the cover art fabric and it’s so cute!
I have this pattern and made the dress in a couple hours for a themed party for 40s/50s attire. It does take a huge amount of material and binding. But it's so cool to put on and go. Literally finished sewing, did make-up and hair and went.
@@joyanne440 The new release of this pattern is in most stores that sell patterns. I used the new release to make this for my daughter. I didn’t find it difficult to follow. It will more than likely need to be altered but that is true of most patterns unless you have the perfect ‘model’ proportions.
When I was a kid fabric stores were very common. This was in the 1950. They had drawers and drawers of patterns and huge catalogue books to look thru to find the perfect "thing". Almost everyone sewed.
I started sewing in the early 60's and remember going through those pattern books and trying new patterns. They were so cheap then, not like now! I've made hundreds of outfits over the years and still sew now and then. One of the skills I am so grateful to have.
Last time I was at JoAnn Fabric was right before a season change (when they release new fabrics and new patterns). They usually have fully stocked drawers of patterns, but it was slim pickins right before the spring/summer patterns were released. Side note: I really was disappointed in the new pattern releases this season, they’re all so mid. Even Vogue was a letdown, and I usually like their pattern designs and fit, even if it’s not a design I’d wear.

Hey, wow, I actually made that dress 13 years ago when I first started sewing! It was probably one of my most-looked-forward-to patterns, because my whole reason for wanting to learn to sew was to make retro dresses. 😍 On mine I did an aqua fabric with tiny brown dots for the front and a solid dark brown for the wrap-around. I felt soooo legit whenever I wore it (with a crinoline underneath) that it felt more like a costume, so I wasn't confident enough to wear it often. 🙈😅

I don't know why this video was suddenly recommended to me, but strangely I have this pattern in my collection and have never used it (I was much thinner when I bought it, and for years was too afraid to "mess it up"). Thanks to your inspirational triumph, I'm going to get that sucker out of storage, go get some thrift store sheets (and drapes -- I love making skirts from drapes) and see what I can do. I once spent 38 straight hours making an authentic hakama and kataginu for my son (lots of time on the floor with a ruler and chalk). I'm guessing it's going to take me a couple of weeks of off-and-on work to finish the dress, but looking forward to it. Thank you very much!
I love the way you did the buttons. They look so much better that way. And I agree 5 might be better. I would love to watch a tutorial on just how you folded it as you did it quite fast and off camera.

Cudos to you! I unfortunately selected a Butterick pattern to make my senior sewing project with. It was a jumpsuit. It was so hard! I never made an item of clothing, or anything else, again!! Your dress looks great. I love it!!
Cute dress! Wish my mom was still here, we used to go pattern shopping together. She could sew anything! She graduated FIT and was a professional pattern maker the last years of her life in NYC. She would have enjoyed your video.
I love those old patterns. My mother was multi-talented and one of her great skills was sewing, so growing up we had custom-fit clothing (bought off the rack and then altered by Mom), wonderful dresses and pants and tops, and she could sew any Halloween costume idea we came up with. I do not sew much. I've made a few costumes and a couple of pieces of clothing. I recall one Halloween costume that I made out of felt and instead of sewing the seams I just stapled them, lol. But I did borrow my daughter's machine recently for a couple of simple items and it made me miss my mom so much, and miss having an expert seamstress in the house, willing to sew for all of us. Good memories. Your dress turned out darling. Good job! :D Also, your cat is really cute!
Awesome! I have to enlarge the pattern by 25 inches all around. I'm not sure I'm going to get it done by the deadline because of that and because of my weird life.
Totally understandable! I got very lucky I was able to find a day to make it work! 😂 I’m not able to sit down and sew uninterrupted like that very often. I hope to see yours soon!
There is hope! I discovered this pattern when someone raved about it in their video. So, I tried it and hated it! That's so exciting to learn that it wasn't completely me...the reprint pattern is largely to blame. Will definitely be giving it another go as it looks like such a fun and comfy dress to wear. :D
Your video caught my attention because I bought this pattern years ago and made the dress. Exact fabric as on the cover; spent a lot of money on it. It looked like something out of an I Love Lucy episode with the model (me) being Lucy. It was horrific. I was truly sad it didn’t fit well. You did awesome; great job!
Ms. Stephanie Canada is wonderful. I've been really hesitant of trying to do a speed-run with this pattern just because I have so many alterations I'd have to make. But now I'm severely tempted. It came out so lovely. Well done. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Thank you! I’m really glad I did the alterations one day and the actual sewing a different day, but other than that I’m very pleased! The pattern pieces aren’t super complicated so slash and spread worked really well. Let me know if you end up making it! I would love to see!
THANK YOU!!! And thank you so much for hosting the challenge and sharing the pattern! It was an absolute blast and I can’t wait to make more! It’ll definitely become a staple pattern for me!
She really is! I’ve been sick the past week and she cuddled me the whole time! 💖 very rarely can we sit still without her coming for cuddles, but she has learned when I’m knitting she’s not allowed on my lap and has to keep my feet warm instead😂
Thank you! It’s one of my favorites! I didn’t make it, but I’ve recently started knitting and once I get a bit more confident I would like to try making it in different colors as well!

Thank you for sharing and for the compliment!
I loved your excitement for this, and it looked great on you. Your cat is super adorable too 😍
Thank you!!!
I love this dress. You did a great job sewing it. Nice job.❤
Thank you!
Very well done, I'm feeling like I maybe, possibly, might give it a go in the future sometime as well , it looks absolutely lovely n you well done x
You did a beautiful job on the dress and it looks fabulous on you!
Thank you!
That dress is so cute. I never thought of using sheets for fabric! Love it!
Thank you! I love using sheets! A great cheap alternative when a lightweight cotton is a good fabric choice and you need lots of it!
❤❤❤❤fabulous dress! You look amazing!
Great build! I can see why people love that pattern, it's super-cute, and you could do so many things to change it up!
Agreed! I already have plans for many more!
How dazzling, the execution and finished product! 👍😍🏆
Wow!! I loved your creative amazing! You make sewing totally fun!!!
Thank you!
What an adorable dress! It’s beautiful….
I've made this dress several times over. Its soo easy and you can do many alterations and additions to it.
Agreed! I can’t wait to make more!
Your interaction with your cat earned a follow 😆 Great video too. May God bless and keep you 🙏
Thank you! She’s a sweet kitty! We adopted her as a kitten from a family of outdoor cats that live at a monastery!
@@KaityBower that's wonderful 😊
Good job! :D
Also, your cat is really cute!
Thank you! And thank you for sharing the wonderful memories of your mom!
@@KaityBower You're welcome. What a sweet reply to my comment!
Good luck!!!
Turned out really cute. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent job. Stunning dress. I would love to see this dress done as a black evening dress with a low V back.
That sounds amazing!
Great job! Really nice presentation and you look so cute in the dress!
Thank you!
I made this dress also when they republished the pattern. It is SO AWESOME! Great job!
Thank you! It is a lot of fabric! I’m so lucky I got this fabric for free. I hope you’re able to revisit the dress and make the fit work for you!
Very very cute! And looks fantastic on you. Great job!
Thank you!
Ms. Stephanie Canada is wonderful. I've been really hesitant of trying to do a speed-run with this pattern just because I have so many alterations I'd have to make. But now I'm severely tempted. It came out so lovely. Well done.

Thank you! I’m really glad I did the alterations one day and the actual sewing a different day, but other than that I’m very pleased! The pattern pieces aren’t super complicated so slash and spread worked really well. Let me know if you end up making it! I would love to see!
I have that pattern! My mom gave it to me years ago... I think it would be gorgeous in a velvet material!
Oooh! Great idea!
I am blessed to have one of the original walk away dress patterns!
Amazing!!!
You’re dress turned out so well! It looks just like the art!
I love how yours turned out!! It is SO CUTE!
THANK YOU!!! And thank you so much for hosting the challenge and sharing the pattern! It was an absolute blast and I can’t wait to make more! It’ll definitely become a staple pattern for me!
I love this dress on you! Good job!
I love your beautiful cat. Such a sweet and affectionate cat!❤️🐾
She really is! I’ve been sick the past week and she cuddled me the whole time! 💖 very rarely can we sit still without her coming for cuddles, but she has learned when I’m knitting she’s not allowed on my lap and has to keep my feet warm instead😂
Very nice!! I can't believe the time you made it in! Amazing.
Thank you!
Cute dress! Looks very comfortable.
Thank you! It is!!
I love this pattern, it is so cute and looks wonderful on you. You fabric choices are perfect too love the red trim.
Thank you!
Good sewing. Good editing.
Oh my gosh…….That dress is adorable!!!
❤TOO CUTE❤ and I enjoyed your old fashioned walk in nature 🌳🍂🍁🪺🌾🌞🌻
Thank you! It’s a beautiful wetlands preserve near my house!
To heck with the dress. I love your sweater! I'm a knitter. I'm gonna try to replicate your sweater.
Thank you! It’s one of my favorites! I didn’t make it, but I’ve recently started knitting and once I get a bit more confident I would like to try making it in different colors as well!
Great job, prettier than anything that’s out there now. I used to sew a lot.
