  • Hi friends! I am so happy to have participated in this challenge hosted by‪@StephanieCanada‬ who was kind enough to share her traced version of Butterick 6015! Even though I started later in the day than I wanted, my completed time was 2 hours and 26 minutes! What a whirlwind! I can’t wait to make a million more of these dresses.
You can find Stephanie on Instagram as @backroomfinds or Tik Tok as @likethenorthcountry
Sorcial shoutout to @SewingSilly for the cleaned up version of the pattern.
Disclaimer, I did take the reveal and wrap up footage a couple days after finishing the dress. It was snowing when I finished and since this is a Summer dress I noped right out of that one. But with Michigan weather being the way it is I only had to wait two days for the weather to hit the 70s. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Aesthetic footage is worth the wait and unpredictability of Mother Nature when the alternative is the unattractive task lighting in my sewing room😂
If you would like to follow along with my sewing process as I work on projects, or would like to see a little more behind the scenes, you can find me on Instagram or Tik Tok as @kaitybower

Hi. I’m not a sewer, but this came up on UA-cam and I was curious what a “walkaway dress” would be. You have such an engaging personality, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole video. You are obviously very talented and the dress looks amazing on you.

Same here! I’m jealous at your talent. I actually found the pattern on ETSY for 17.00, which I thought was an okay price. What I am wondering, is it one piece? What I mean, do you step into it, then pull the top over your head to secure in front? Thanks for the demo. Love it!

I think you did a fine job, and yes with some torso and shoulder adjustments it will fit you nicely. The extra waist buttons will make it more stable, this dress was designed for someone with a 1950s wasp waist, don't forget, lol! I am glad you mentioned that it looks best with a petticoat. I watch channels where people express disappointment in how these vintage garments look when sewn up, and complain that they are limp or frumpy, etc...I think modern people are missing something here. Namely, to get a true vintage look you need correct undergarments to act as a foundation. My grandmother was always going on about proper "foundational layers" such as bras, slips and girdles. It's hard for us to believe now, but even slender women wore girdles back then, to nip in the waist and create the desired 1950s silhouette. Without these ingredients the garment will not wear as expected. It was also much more common back then to starch and iron cotton fabric, which gave it more body. I enjoyed watching you create your own version of the Walk Away Dress.

@@susanrussell8195I totally agree! I found the first comment honest and wholesome. She only agreed with the shoulder comment, which in my opinion was completely honest and needed. The shoulders were too long and while the channel stated she did it thinking she needed to but, found it to be a mistake. We can all agree the dress looks nice on her but, would look lovely more tailored to her shoulders!

Last time I was at JoAnn Fabric was right before a season change (when they release new fabrics and new patterns). They usually have fully stocked drawers of patterns, but it was slim pickins right before the spring/summer patterns were released.
Side note: I really was disappointed in the new pattern releases this season, they’re all so mid. Even Vogue was a letdown, and I usually like their pattern designs and fit, even if it’s not a design I’d wear.

Lovely dress - well done...... To your point about petticoats : underskirts, slips, petticoats, whatever you want to call them will **almost always** improve the way your dress/skirt hangs/falls. Especially those made in a "silkier" fabric, such as polyester/nylon/silk. (Cotton slips are lovely, but can create surface friction between the slip and your dress/skirt, thus impeding the flow/hang of your garment). xxx💖💖💖

Hey, wow, I actually made that dress 13 years ago when I first started sewing! It was probably one of my most-looked-forward-to patterns, because my whole reason for wanting to learn to sew was to make retro dresses. 😍 On mine I did an aqua fabric with tiny brown dots for the front and a solid dark brown for the wrap-around. I felt soooo legit whenever I wore it (with a crinoline underneath) that it felt more like a costume, so I wasn't confident enough to wear it often. 🙈😅

Somehow this looks to me like a wrap around apron, maybe because of the lack of side seams and/or zipper or perhaps the checkered cloth. Anyway, it's very nice and well done. Good idea using the bed sheet. My mother was a seamstress supreme, self taught. She could make anything from cloth, often using patterns she designed. When working a pattern she'd not used before, she'd cut it from old bed sheets so she could make adjustments before cutting from brand new cloth.

I don't know why this video was suddenly recommended to me, but strangely I have this pattern in my collection and have never used it (I was much thinner when I bought it, and for years was too afraid to "mess it up"). Thanks to your inspirational triumph, I'm going to get that sucker out of storage, go get some thrift store sheets (and drapes -- I love making skirts from drapes) and see what I can do. I once spent 38 straight hours making an authentic hakama and kataginu for my son (lots of time on the floor with a ruler and chalk). I'm guessing it's going to take me a couple of weeks of off-and-on work to finish the dress, but looking forward to it. Thank you very much!

Very cute dress! It occurred to me that a cute top might be developed for a person with disabilities who has trouble dressing. I am thinking of this because helping my mother dress has become so difficult now that she is disabled; and I also worked in a nursing home where dressing with traditional sleeves was also a challenge.

An interesting variation on this dress may be to substitute an attached step-in pair of capri pants for the front dress panel, giving you the outer skirt in the sides and back, with mid calf pants underneath. Putting it on would require stepping into the pants, placing head through the opening, and then bringing the sides back and around to fasten at the waist. A different fabric could be used starting at the back waistline to give contrast between the 2 layers.

Well done! I love the finished result and lucky you it fits you without any alterations! When I gave this one a try I was lucky enough to find a blog (can't remember her name she does amazing vintage sewing) talking about tricks and alterations for this one. Still when I grew to hate the dress cause every time I wear it out and about the "under skirt" is riding up and bunching uncomfortably and the over skirt is opening with any little wind

Would adding buttonholes to the bottom corners of the overskirt and buttons in the appropriate positions on the underskirt help with wind exposure? Then maybe light weight (like hem chain) on the underskirt would help prevent fabric riding up if the extra weight of the buttoned overskirt doesn't fix enough.

    • @shantigarin7272
      @shantigarin7272 Рік тому

@@wartgin I didn't think of weighing down the hem actually! I'll give that a try, as for the buttons I have a petticoat in between underskirt and overskirt it is more difficult to make that work
