I have a hereditary degenerative brain disease that is a recessive gene on my side of the family A female Distant cousin that I found through my genealogy has not the same disease but the same type of disease that I do I think that cousin is on my dad's side of the family but I don't know what cousin relationship I am to her and who the common ancestor is. And this video was helpful. My cousin's daughter had the same disease that she does as well my cousin found out she had the disease after her daughter died of the disease. I looked at my cousin matches and I share my cousin's surname on both sides of my family.

Great video, thanks! In the first example (autosomal recessive), how do you know that person 2 in generation I has the genotype "Rr"? Isn't it also possible that the genotype is "RR" (homozygous)?
