For me...the HRV would be a step up for me. I have the 2007 Toyota Matrix, and I have tried the Kia Soul as a rental, but the trunk was surprisingly smaller than my Matrix. The HRV looks bigger, and is more sleek. The HRV is a step up for me in the Japanese market.
Weird options! Here in Europe, there's a FWD-only 1.5 V-Tec, with 130 hp and a 1.6 diesel, with AWD available for it! Both have a 6-speed manual as a standard transmission, but only the 1.5 can be combined with the CVT!
You know.....you read my mind!!! I was just saying to myself this morning "I wonder how long it will be before MotorWeek tests the HR-V"..........AWESOME CALL!!!!!!!!
Thanks to informative videos like this one from #MotorWeek and perusing written reviews, we decided to buy the HR-V to replace our venerable CR-V. It's loaded with electronics and safety features we found appealing. Our HR-V came with the sunroof which does impinge on my head clearance being 6'1". The electric steering is quick and light. We've never owned a car with a CVT before and it takes some getting used to but I can say the car has a peppy response despite having the Civic's engine. I love the automatic climate control. My wife has her iPhone synced to the HR-V's entertainment system. It works quite well. You get two USB ports, an HDMI port and two 12-volt power ports to keep your devices connected and powered up. The 6-speaker 180 watt stereo sounds sharp and can handle heavy bass without devolving into static. We have just 500 miles on our new #Honda #HRV but we really are pleased with it so far.
The HRV was supposed to come out this spring. I've called all the big Honda dealers near me and none of them have a clue on when it is coming out. Some haven't even gotten one for the showroom. I really want to get it but can't wait much longer.
Honda has Needed this vehicle for so many years it has hurt... Though it has kept us in our CRV longer, we're ready for this slightly smaller footprint in an HRV.
Did I miss it? Where is the track test: 0-60, quarter mile, breaking, etc? You did it for renegade. A lot of "stock footage" put in this review. Where are the results of track tests?
+vmv890 yes, mw has been going downhill quite a bit over the years. the best part of their reviews were the instrumented tests on the 1/4 mile track they lease, which is something that is still very much valued that those "other" crackpot youtube reviewers do not offer. unfortunately, it appears mw has become lazy and just resort to photography and voiceovers to create the illusion of a good review.
Here we are back again with high gas prices. I wish the price then was the price now. Honda couldn't get enough of the hrvs. I never test drove one, but one of my coworkers had one and at least up front it was extremely roomy and comfortable. I would buy it.
I've got the 2015 Fit EXL/Navi and I'm considering an upgrade to this due to the nasty Canadian snow. I'm fully aware of the advantages a Jeep or a Subaru would have over the HRV, but I like dealing with my local Honda dealer. A couple of things about the HR-V are bugging me - the lack of power in engine and stereo. I suppose they left the road noise and manual seat adjustment so it wouldn't interfere with CRV sales, but if I'm springing for the EX-L version, I'd like something a little more impressive than the milquetoast 180w stereo. The incessant whinging about the touch controls is getting boring - use the steering wheel mounted controls. Yes, the digital touch is awful but hitting "auto" for the climate control isn't exactly a a 5 minute search. The CX3 is a contender, with a much, much nicer interior and tech than the HRV, but my test drives resulted in the same mpg for both, and a better experience with the HRV. The CX3 is a little coffin. I'm 5'9", and the door sills feel like they're too high in the CX3. Rear visibility is awful too. Honda does a lot of stuff right, but seems to intentionally walk into a haze of boring. There's no reason they can't put 160hp through the 1.5L in the HRV. For 20k/yr driving in city/highway 50/50 mix with a LOT of snow in the winter, I'm seeing the HRV as a better option than the CX3. The Crosstrek is better for ground clearance and AWD system, but they're so ugly inside, I feel like I'm in a 1989 Dodge. Why Honda won't be offering AWD in the upcoming TypeR is another moronic move by Honda and another topic altogether.
IF Honda is smart it will offer the Civic's 1.5turbo in the HR-V . Then i will buy one . If not not + after 6 Honda's in my life i wait for the Audi Q2.
I like this car for some reason. It's actually pretty attractive for a Honda and the interior looks nice. I'd still take the Renegade on looks alone, but I see this selling really well.
These are becoming so popular because of poor visibility in cars. This sit up better, have better cargo room and just as good fuel economy. What's not to love. Plus you get AWD options which a lot of sedans do not offer. What's not to love.
EXACTLY ! I sat in the Mazda3 and I could not see the road because the hood in the Mazda3 was way too high. Oh, I could see the road 20 car lengths ahead of the car, but I could not see the road only 1 car length ahead of me, the way I can see the road in my 2008 Corolla. I then sat in a Mazda CX 3 and the view was much better, it was more like the old 2008 Corolla, close but not as good. So yeah, that's why people are buying these things.
SubieSean honda doesn't even offer manual with it's base model here in the Philippines (1.8 E). My auntie wants this car so bad, if it has a manual she would buy one as their second car.
dtofq I test drove one last week. It looks much better in person, and in colors other than blue. The interior looked and felt surprisingly plush. Trying to wrap my head around the touch screen, though. It should come with a year's supply of Windex.
I don't know how many of the HR-Vs I'll see on the roads in the future, but I do see more Subaru XV Crosstreks on the roads, thanks to Symmetrical AWD. Although offering similar fuel economy as the HR-V, it has more usable power and torque.
i like this car a lot. i love the mpg ratings for it, but the engine seems to be pretty underpowered. i love the design of the exterior, very acura-esque, and i love the interior as well, and the price range seems to be getting there, was hoping that the lx would be in the 17k range, but at least it's under 20k. seems very practical and comfortable, would love to check one out in person and test drive it some time :)
What is with the need to use a CVT?! Just use a 8-speed auto and market it at the Mini crowd. 6 speed for the AWD. Boom. Subaru would-bes and Mini lovers are wanting the Honda.
nice looking CUTE UTE but it needs a lil more POWER! the CRV's engine should be a 2.4 DOHC pushing out 201hp & 181tq and the HRV needs to have 2.0 DOHC 180hp & 165tq. all these cars companies wanna make fuel efficient cars, but we still need 2 have FUN.
I was thinking of getting it, and trading in my VW Tiguan for it. I test drove it and it does not compare to my Tiguan. My Tiguan has so much more power, the Tiguan is a 4 cylinder turbo power....so it has kick, it drives like a 6cylinder.... I was disappointed when I test drove this Honda. I really like the look but it has no power... so disappointed
read reviews by people who have actually bought this car. I know I wont be buying one. I also have a personal policy on not buying a car in its first model year.
Really honda? 1.8 liters SOHC on a newer vehicle? You could have at least equip it with a k24 2.4 liter engine or at least a b20z2 2.0 liter engine like the old CRV.. Sometimes I dont understand why honda chooses to downgrade their engines for newer vehicles
PLEASE burst bubble! PLEASE! So sick of these and the bland, driving safety choked, CVT vehicles we get these days. This is basically the fun to drive Fit with a lift kit.
Cartoonish Jeep Renegade? That Nissan Juke looks like the Mars rover. I have to say Honda's mpg ratings have always been disappointing. The Fit barely gets better mileage than the Civic while the CRV/Element averaged in the mid 20s. How is it that the Subaru Forester manages to match a sub-compact in fuel economy? For shame Honda. For shame.
I miss the Element...
What a great voice John Davis. I hope you will be the only reviewer of cars for Motorweek... lots of passion for cars in your voice!
He is. He's been their host for over 20 years.
Davis and MotorWeek will start season 37 this fall
The MotorWeek host is a legend
I think Honda nailed this one. They'll sell like the proverbial hotcakes.
"Thrill sucking CVT!" Best line ever!
I mean, he's not wrong. CVTs suck, and more than just the fun out of driving.
After all these years, it still looks great.

It's probably so slow that they didn't even bother
Thanks Honda for the Manual transmission even tho some say this is better and faster with the CVT.
Love my 2016 hrv ex. Excellent quality for daily driver.. roomy, lane watch and smart brake... easy drivabilty with headaches
I considered getting a 2016 Honda HR-V, but I wasn't ready for the buttonless touchscreen-only controls. I went with a Nissan Rogue.
Ahh I am still waiting for the road test. You know knocks, slides, pick-ups, speed test?
A jacked up Fit. I felt the back seats feel like when i sat on my fit i used to drive.
Here we are back again with high gas prices. I wish the price then was the price now. Honda couldn't get enough of the hrvs. I never test drove one, but one of my coworkers had one and at least up front it was extremely roomy and comfortable. I would buy it.

why didn't you do a track test?
I want this thing SO BADLY :P Great job Honda!
I like this car for some reason. It's actually pretty attractive for a Honda and the interior looks nice. I'd still take the Renegade on looks alone, but I see this selling really well.

as always a great car review, thanks MW
They should get rid of the Fit and just have this. I imagine this will fly off the lots considering how popular the segment is. Looks really good too.
I wonder if usdm hrv has the fit's L15 motor....i think that would be ok for the us.
Too bad you can't get the manual with AWD.
***** I bet that would've sold well!
SubieSean honda doesn't even offer manual with it's base model here in the Philippines (1.8 E). My auntie wants this car so bad, if it has a manual she would buy one as their second car.
Looks cool. Kind of like an updated and refined Suzuki SX4, though I don't think the AWD system is as good.
I wish it had the 2.4l engine in accord and crv that would get it a bit more oomph, and seats a little more comfortable for long commutes or trips
One letter away from HPV.
Cool car tho
Actually surprised...this is the only thing from Honda that's even close to being attractive, inside & out.
dtofq I test drove one last week. It looks much better in person, and in colors other than blue. The interior looked and felt surprisingly plush. Trying to wrap my head around the touch screen, though. It should come with a year's supply of Windex.
***** They're both ugly vehicles...
dtofq n39 it88 I 6 Brin5n hi 8y9 6 this 0z uni 6o5
dtofq the Accord is the best looking now
Electric parking brake is this the emergency brake if it is that's not good what happens if your battery dies and u need to use the brake?
The arrival of the Honda HRV cements the death of the Nissan Juke, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson...
Well except that the Tucson and Sportage are out selling the HR-V so far this year...as well as the Buick Encore and Renegade. And the CrossTrek too..
Tucson would be competing more with the CR-V since the Tucson is a small SUV, not a crossover.
I don't know how many of the HR-Vs I'll see on the roads in the future, but I do see more Subaru XV Crosstreks on the roads, thanks to Symmetrical AWD. Although offering similar fuel economy as the HR-V, it has more usable power and torque.
whats the 0 to 60 900 seconds??
I wouldn't call Honda's CVT "better than most". IMO the only thing worse than Honda's CVT is Nissan's absolutely dreadful CVT.
i like this car a lot. i love the mpg ratings for it, but the engine seems to be pretty underpowered. i love the design of the exterior, very acura-esque, and i love the interior as well, and the price range seems to be getting there, was hoping that the lx would be in the 17k range, but at least it's under 20k. seems very practical and comfortable, would love to check one out in person and test drive it some time :)
I got my 2018 LX awd for 19.5. I average 31 mpg mixed driving, and the cvt is plenty peppy for my taste. Also the cargo space is amazing.
Damn that is blind spot nightmare
Lol from a 2-door SUV to this. So much has changed
What is with the need to use a CVT?! Just use a 8-speed auto and market it at the Mini crowd. 6 speed for the AWD. Boom. Subaru would-bes and Mini lovers are wanting the Honda.
Gonna have to keep up with KIA when the Trail'ster makes it to market
I'd honestly rather have the renegade or the Trax. I like my vehicles to be quiet inside
Get the new turbo motor in there and I may be interested!
Came here for the track tests and there was nothing...
So, what's wrong with the name?
it needs manual with awd and a turbo option atleast or a all new engine period its 11 years old
nice looking CUTE UTE but it needs a lil more POWER! the CRV's engine should be a 2.4 DOHC pushing out 201hp & 181tq and the HRV needs to have 2.0 DOHC 180hp & 165tq. all these cars companies wanna make fuel efficient cars, but we still need 2 have FUN.

Nice vehicle
Pretty good car except for that *crappy* underpowered engine and annoying touchscreen-only controls. Pretty much deal-breakers.
godfatherNYC It is still the quickest in the class.
MrLalasd Mazda CX-3 is quicker
godfatherNYC It is lighter than the civic, so the engine is well matched
Daniel Timnev you won't be turbo'ing that skyactiv
It should use like a 1.5 turbo with 160 hp that would be a good engine
I have a 2012 civic and that engine feels under powered in my sedan. Oh and I hear it has the typical LOUD honda road noise
My neighbor has a 2012 civic what a gutless rattle can
2013-2015 scion xb is a way better vehicle. No oil consumption issues either.
read reviews by people who have actually bought this car. I know I wont be buying one. I also have a personal policy on not buying a car in its first model year.
so far so good with ours. feels good to be unique for a while but i see more hrv's now...
None of these have power seats.... What was Honda thinking......I mean not thinking
Crazy Dumb!
Really honda? 1.8 liters SOHC on a newer vehicle? You could have at least equip it with a k24 2.4 liter engine or at least a b20z2 2.0 liter engine like the old CRV.. Sometimes I dont understand why honda chooses to downgrade their engines for newer vehicles

this thing woulblow all away cx3 mazda sucks to Honda needs new engine or a turbo added
If I had to choose I'd get a Jeep Renegade. This HR-V is more like something a girl would get for her high school graduation.
***** Hahaha ok
2 more 2 more
boring cars with too much creature comfort.

CVT====== UGH."thrill sucking"...LOL LOL LOL LOL
not much bigger than the Honda Fit.. and has zero acceleration... The FIT much better value than this.
fuk i hate dis background music
Nissan Juke nismo is better in my opinion
