Thanks for this easy video.I made one today. I added a button hole and adjusted the tie so it wraps around me and ties at the side. I also made it a short wrap skirt. Love it!
You're adorable! I was lucky enough to have met you! The Rhododendron Quilt Guild in Florence, Oregon invited you to our guild several years ago. You were so kind and so talented! I hope you're doing well...
I must be old....I've been reading the comments and giggle because it's one of the first skirts that I ever made back in the early 70's. They were so popular with stretch and sew, cut a tad different because they were circular but the wrap around concept was the skirt! Thanks for the reminder and I plan to sew one for my granddaughter!
Great video. I didn't even use the pattern I bought. My mom (retired home ec/ sewing teacher) helped me and I finished my first lapa and I will wear it to class today.!!! I'm making like 4 more. So happy!😍😍😊
So essentially your skirt portion is waist diameter X ~1.5, and then the belt is twice that. Then length is whatever your heart desires. So simple! Easy to adapt for all sizes :) Love it!
Just finished my first one.... It's the first piece of clothing that I've ever sewn. Turned out pretty good. I guess all that quilting does convert into sewing skills. I'm giving it to my niece and her daughter. I'll let them fight over it until the next one is made. Thanks Rob for the inspiration and taking the fear out of making clothes with my sewing machine... it's not just for quilts anymore. :)
wow, this is cool. its exactly the same as what we wear in the islands. This piece you call a lapa, we call an an ie (ee-ye) - short for ie lavalava. Its part of a two peice outfit we ladies wear called a puletasi. We dance in them and we go to church in them, we wear them to formal events and - well, to almost everything that involves the pacific culture. Thank you for sharing this :) -
I pretty much lived in this style of wrap around skirt in Hawaii (and Mexico and Spain).. sooo versatile and practical.. my fave was a hemp silk one! Wore it for years and years :)
I have a skirt like this which was made in Senegal. I also made one in my sewing class. Both of them contained darts. I am happy to have learned how an easierway to connect the belt. Thanks for making your videos. I subscribed.
Thanks for the great skirt video Rob! I changed it a little and used some of your techniques from the curtain video to create a cute reversible wrap skirt for my 6 year old niece. Can't wait to send it to her! Thanks again!
Sooooo it took me 1 hour to make this belt!!! I kept jacking it up until i realized I'm watching you make it from the opposite direction. Once i figured that out... It was a breeze.. Great video!! Looking forward to more!!
That sewing machine sounds lovely. I am making a skirt too, but I did it a bit different, and I will need to add more belt later but I have plenty of fabric to use. Fun guide. Ty for sharing.
Great tutorial. I need to make myself a nice around the house and garden skirt. I have eyed down the fabric I will use *looks great* I am a bit bigger :) so Dee L info will really help me scale it up. I think i will be buying 3meters and its 150 cms wide. Plenty of material for other projects. Ty for sharing.
Caffeinated mode, ha ha.great item to make and looks easy to do, no darts as well.now...which pair of my mother's curtains shall I cut up ! Your great at teaching, thanking for the subtitles too. Look forward to watching the other tutorials
It looks like your wife has lots of fun with her dance group! Totally cool! And this is a super cute project!! Awesome vid as per usual, Rob! Thanks!! :)
Oh Rob! You look so cute in that skirt! LOL Reminds me when I was making a bridesmaid dress for a girlfriend. I had my husband try it on so that I could make sure it was looking okay. I am definitely going to make this skirt.
Wrap skirts always make me laugh. A friend of mine was wearing a wrap skirt made from a silky fabric at church one day. She was distributing communion when the knot holding the skirt came loose and the skirt slithered to the floor. She looked down, picked up the skirt, and in a very dignified manner exited the church to retie her skirt. May your lapa never fall!
very cute , it reminds me of an over sized apron . cool idea I have seen these in the store's and now I can make my own this next spring for summer. great video
"We will set those aside for another project" ( throws bits on the floor ) 😂😆😂😂 You crack me up Rob 😃 Fab tutorial, would look great in the summer....maybe not our British summer 🌧🌧🌧, but someone's sunny summer 🌞😆 Thanks for the tutorial.
Love this Tutorial Rob. As you mentioned, would also be a great beach cover up. Definitely on my to do list. Always enjoy your energy. Thanks for sharing.
These are what we called “wrap skirts” when I was in high school (moons ago!). The only difference, we made a “button hole” on the side of the skirt where the belt on the other side would pass through. Then the waistband would lay flat. 😊
A large button whole would be nice to pull one of the waist ties through. That way you will not have a gap at the side. The waist will be smooth all around.
Awesome as always Rob. I could have used this when I was in the islands last month. I would have worn one like Pierce Brosnan in 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. A fat, much less handsome Pierce Brosnan.
It would have been nice to have seen the finished product properly, (that's very important) so the viewer can see for themselves if it is something they may want to make 😊
I have been looking to buy one of these for a while and this tutorial is so straightforward that I think even with my severe anxiety disorder I could give it a try! Thanks so much Rob - do you sell these too???
Rob, how do you sew jeans hems/jeans fabric on a home sewing machine? I have done that numerous times, broken numerous needles, got numerous puckering seams... the list is long. So, any secret you can share?
my son and i real do enjoy watching your videos. he says thanks again he a beginner what the easy project for him. pillows and pot holes he knows, and want to the next he says he want to make this one for me. so how many yards of fabric is this?
Forgot to mention that I have no problems with lighter weight fabrics, and I shouldn't as I have been sewing for many, many years, more than 50... and I am only 75! I am an ultimate DIY-er!
I just wish you would show an actual.pucture of the skirt. The video at the beginning is impossible to see what it looks like. I had to watch it twice just to notice she had something over her leggings. I love your tutorials but I don't watch that often because it frustrates me that you go so fast through important steps and then never show anything finished close up. Can't have everything I guess.
Thanks for this easy video.I made one today. I added a button hole and adjusted the tie so it wraps around me and ties at the side. I also made it a short wrap skirt. Love it!

Hi Ruth! I'm excited to see what you create! Feel free to share a photo of the finished skirt! Have fun sewing!
Mid 70s my first 4H sewing project was a wrap skirt!
When I made this kind of skirt in the late sixties, we added a button hole in the belt to thread the tie through. It made the ties more secure.
your so fun to watch....you make sewing seem easy with your easy teaching and witty humor!
Great video. I didn't even use the pattern I bought. My mom (retired home ec/ sewing teacher) helped me and I finished my first lapa and I will wear it to class today.!!! I'm making like 4 more. So happy!😍😍😊

+Dee L thanks for the awesome comment!!
I should’ve read that before I used the same measurement of fabric as shown, as I just now made a mistake
@@gaylemae lol me, too. I need more like 70" of fabric.
Maaaate, love your style, music, simplicity, thankyou!!

So glad you enjoyed it, Brendan!
I've watched many DYI wrap skirt tutorials yours by far is one of the easiest and simple to follow. Nice job! TY🤙
I like your step by step explanation, its easy to understand

Hello Arieta! Thank you so much for the comment! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the tutorial! :)

Your wife is freaking star- those dance moves 😂♥️🌻🙌🦄
Very good tutorial, I couldn't stop laughing when the blade fell out, nice to know it happens to other people other than myself!
+Jenny Kandy it's always fun when real problems happen while filming, I'm just a regular sewer just like those who watch!
I have a skirt like this which was made in Senegal. I also made one in my sewing class. Both of them contained darts. I am happy to have learned how an easierway to connect the belt. Thanks for making your videos. I subscribed.
I too automatically put in darts at the waist. Fits better on a female form! 😅
Thanks for the video, I belong to a drum circle and I can't wait to make some for the kids who love to dance.
Perfect to wear on a windy day
DUDE! I sew too! So glad to see you on here!
Thanks for the great skirt video Rob! I changed it a little and used some of your techniques from the curtain video to create a cute reversible wrap skirt for my 6 year old niece. Can't wait to send it to her! Thanks again!
That sounds awesome, Ann!
Awesome tutorial. Very well explanation!
Sooooo it took me 1 hour to make this belt!!! I kept jacking it up until i realized I'm watching you make it from the opposite direction. Once i figured that out... It was a breeze.. Great video!! Looking forward to more!!
Just came across your tutorial and found it very easy to follow. Just made the Lapa while watching. It came out very nice.
That sewing machine sounds lovely. I am making a skirt too, but I did it a bit different, and I will need to add more belt later but I have plenty of fabric to use. Fun guide. Ty for sharing.

+Cheryl Land thanks for the sweet comment! My wife has a blast in her dance group, she's quite talented!!
I WILL be making one of these to use as a swimsuit cover up! This is SOOOO EASY to make and it's pretty as well.
+Mary Ellen Brennan they're really super fun!!!
We have a pool and will be making these for cover ups!,, Thanks Rob, you're the greatest! 🏆🏊🏼🏖🛁⛱
+Jolene Shindler we hope to see photos of the wraps you create!!
Thanks Rob, ypu always try to take the time to provide us a free download of your project when possible.
Oh Rob! You look so cute in that skirt! LOL Reminds me when I was making a bridesmaid dress for a girlfriend. I had my husband try it on so that I could make sure it was looking okay. I am definitely going to make this skirt.
You must have a very helpful husband!
I use to wear those back in the day. So very comfortable!
+Alison Janvrin My wife loves them!!
Wrap skirts always make me laugh. A friend of mine was wearing a wrap skirt made from a silky fabric at church one day. +Rosemary Carlson just like a knot in a swimsuit, it's always a good idea to make sure it's secure!!
Rosemary Carlson lol
😄😄😄😄
She became a lappa dropper
I always wear yoga shorts or athletic shorts underneath
I love your energy.
So glad I found this tutorial - fun and easy - thanks... This would cute as a double layer, too.. or worn higher over the bosoms, too...
I luv how you don't make just one thing. I'm learning so much. just got a babylock serger. ready to go
+Diana Wright that's awesome!
very cute , it reminds me of an over sized apron . cool idea I have seen these in the store's and now I can make my own this next spring for summer. great video
Wow it's so beautiful. I love green color. I don't know how to use Sweing Machine, so I will hand stitch one for my daughter.
This tutorial is perfection 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
"We will set those aside for another project" ( throws bits on the floor ) 😂😆😂😂 You crack me up Rob 😃 Fab tutorial, would look great in the summer....maybe not our British summer 🌧🌧🌧, but someone's sunny summer 🌞😆 Thanks for the tutorial.
+Debbie MacKenzie haha I do that in a lot of tutorials, our poor filming crew people who have to clean up after my messes!
O
I know this video was a while ago, but I just found it and thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for making it simple, like me :)
Love this Tutorial Rob. As you mentioned, would also be a great beach cover up. Definitely on my to do list. Always enjoy your energy. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome tutorial. Very easy to follow!
+Sew Russia thank you so much!!
Love this for the beach, so easey, I'm sharing this TUTORIAL 👍👍👍👍👍💃
Great tutorial
Thanks! This looks easy! I’m definitely going to try it!
You’re brilliant. Love it
Nice. I like your iron. Where did you buy and what’s the brand name please ☺️
THANK YOU SO MUCH, I JUST FINNISH MY WRAPP SKIRT IT TURN OUT BEAUTIFULLY SO EASEY, I'M ALL ABOUT EASEY. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Love this, but I'm curvy. This would need some darts to dip in for my waist. Any hints on where to add them? I sub'd too!
Awesomeness your fast enough for my learning and clear to understand you put some women to shame ! lol 😂 thanks for sharing
Amazing tutorial, just what I was looking for!
A large button whole would be nice to pull one of the waist ties through. That way you will not have a gap at the side. The waist will be smooth all around.
That's an awesome idea!
Yes one I bought 18 yr ago have to button hole one for slim one for bigger person it’s great.
Thought the same thing. Add a buttonhole, in the appropriate spot to pull the belt through for a smooth fit.
yes, I'd add the buttonhole and more experienced sewers can add darts for shaping at the back of the skirt too.
I made a skirt like this years ago with the button hole pull through for the belt. Great and easy to make.
Awesome as always Rob. I could have used this when I was in the islands last month. I would have worn one like Pierce Brosnan in 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. A fat, much less handsome Pierce Brosnan.
I'm picturing it now! Haha, thanks a bunch!
Excellent directions! Thank you!
lol Rob commercial break - it could only happen to you........ enjoying this new pattern.
enjoyed the video, definitely making the skirt.
Very nice and easy . Thank you
Could you please show me how to make a summer top that is off the shoulders and up on neck?
It would have been nice to have seen the finished product properly, (that's very important) so the viewer can see for themselves if it is something they may want to make 😊
agree! I am thinking I will need to add darts.
Firstable !! Thank you !!
And secondly hello from New Jersey 😍😘
Woooow. You are one of the best husbands!!
Thanks I've been seeking a wrap around skirt I'm stucck
I have been looking to buy one of these for a while and this tutorial is so straightforward that I think even with my severe anxiety disorder I could give it a try! Thanks so much Rob - do you sell these too???
What kind of cordless iron are you using? Brand/price?
awesome tutorial, and easy to watch! I like how it turned out :)
As always Rob Amazing video (smiles)
I made the skirt but I need to add darts. How do I place them on the skirt ?
Rob, how do you sew jeans hems/jeans fabric on a home sewing machine? I have done that numerous times, broken numerous needles, got numerous puckering seams... the list is long. So, any secret you can share?
Süper video 🥰👏👏
You’re awesome❤
I've been checking out your videos. Just wondering if you have done a tutorial on Thai Fisherman Pants? (Subbed btw)
Thank you for watching! I have not done a tutorial on those pants, but thank you for the suggestion!
my son and i real do enjoy watching your videos. he says thanks again he a beginner what the easy project for him. pillows and pot holes he knows, and want to the next he says he want to make this one for me. so how many yards of fabric is this?
I used 1.5 yards of fabric, Jewel. It's awesome that your son and you both sew!
a beautiful iron you have
how many yards of fabric needed? Thank you,
Is there no shaping on the waist?
What is the best frantic to use to make one of these.
Haha with you travel coffee pouch you can make coffee wherever you go haha haha
I seriously need to learn how to sew
You can do it! It is "sew" much fun!
Hi your great. I don’t see your notes?
Could this be done with a knit?
Thank you.!
Brilliant! Many thanks u's
Reversible wrap around can you do it can you show it would appreciate
It's nice 😍
Hey can you tell me what sewing machine you are using plz
Hello! Rob uses a Baby Lock Jane when he is filming. Thanks for watching!
superb
Oh no! My skirt doesn’t go 1-1/2 times around and it’s too long (ie: to the floor!)
Is this dance thing an Igbo thing? Because that's what wrapper in Igbo is called, Lapa.
Forgot to mention that I have no problems with lighter weight fabrics, and I shouldn't as I have been sewing for many, many years, more than 50... and I am only 75! I am an ultimate DIY-er!
you are a kick! I might just make it slightly A-line
A lapa is actually a limpid in the Azores Portugal.
WOW Thank you :)
What is the sizing?
I just wish you would show an actual.pucture of the skirt. The video at the beginning is impossible to see what it looks like. I had to watch it twice just to notice she had something over her leggings. I love your tutorials but I don't watch that often because it frustrates me that you go so fast through important steps and then never show anything finished close up. Can't have everything I guess.
oops! I hate when that happens. how fun. glad u didn't git hurt rob
+Diana Wright haha we understand!! Thanks for the love!
Why don't you just sew the two long 5" pieces together straight across the ends instead of the diagonal seam?
stronger bond and less noticeable in some cases
thanks
