- The opening credit sequence to Tank Girl (1995). The song is "Girl U Want" by Devo, with vocals performed by Jula Bell (as revealed in the comments, thanks Jula!). Sadly, this version never made it to the film's official soundtrack.
If the movie was 100% animated like Heavy Metal, this movie would be a classic. As it is, it's a cult guilty pleasure for me.
WWTGD? What would tank girl do? I don't think ya or tank girl would feel guilty over this film.
Dude, this is a family favorite over here. My oldest sister (10 yrs older than I, so she was a full adult when this came out) LOVED it. "It's been swell but the swelling's gone down" is still a favourite between us 4 sister blisters.
Unfortunately, Tank Girl made adolescent me shave my head and starve myself. I learned that 1) my head shape can't carry that look off, and 2) no matter how devotedly and miserably I denied myself food, I couldn't get rid of my booty/thighs. I just ended up with zero tits, pokey ribs, and a still-round butt. Props to the late 90s/early 2000's, and the booty revolution.
This is what happens when they waste their money over something to could’ve made it better.

This is probably one of my favorite movies. I saw it when I was 6 and thought it was the coolest movie ever. So futuristic. I'm 23 now and it's still better than nearly any movie you'd see today.
I loved the the day I watched it with my mom and aunt, I was 8, still one of my all time favorites

I idolized Tank Girl back in the day! Who says girls have to look like a Barbie doll to be sexy? I'd rather be a rough & tumble tomboy that can take care of herself & kick ass, than spend all day worrying about messing up my hair or makeup.

I cannot describe the awesomeness of this opening for me. I'd had the original song committed to my teenage memory. From the opening riff, THIS version ensured I'd love this movie whatever came afterwards (I'd have found it mediocre otherwise). I had the same experience with "Escape from L.A.," come to think of it.
This should've been the version on the soundtrack.
Literally here right now because I was scouring the web for some sort audio file. I cannot believe this version only exists for the movie!
Seems like a missed opportunity, I mean first new Devo recording in 5 years (at the time). I feel like that alone would have pushed the soundtrack into collector status (and therefore bolstered box office numbers too).
Very frustrated that there is absolutely no way to experience this jam outside of this video and the actual movie.
@@UranusKiller Same here. I finally settled for this exact version (i.e., an audio capture from the film itself). I can live with the sound effects. Might help to add the vocalist "Julia Bell" to your search terms
Honestly one of my favorite movies, and I have no idea how it did so badly.

I've looked for years for an "official" release of this specific version of the song. I'd go with a rip of the film but the opening credits have sound effects which just kills it for me. I wish I could find a "clean", full-length, unaltered Julia Bell version somewhere.

@Молодые Сердца You should read the comics. Tank Girl in the Deadline days really WAS Mad Max with Gorillaz, 'cos it was a Mad Max riff, set in Australia and drawn by Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett.

I had no problem with the movie itself being in live action style but I agree with some of the comments here that a remake of the film needs to be 100% animated.
All I have to say here is the opening credits were ace and the first half and hour of the movie was no bad then the plot started to deteriorate. Lorri Petty's performance as Tank girl kept me watching it till the end.
shame this never made it to the soundtrack, this is the only good version of this song I like.

@Juonsteel456 - i seen this in the movie theater back in 1995 when i was 15 with my mom and my brother. also im from akron ohio and this song was made by Devo and Devo is from Akron, also im buddies with Wayne Beck one of the devo band guys on my Facebook. it was a little over 20 years ago i seen this movie, i always wondered about the back story of it, in the back story they say a comet or asteroid hits the earth in 2017 and causes the crisis of the world becoming a desert, i hope that a asteroid dont do that to the earth this year in 2017 in real life. also id be about the age of Malcolm McDowell's character in the movie, my nieice Victoria would be about the age of the main character Rebeca when this takes place in 10 years , when it gets to be the year 2027 .... over all i liked this movie i had a good time watching it. it was kinda a far fetched thing but over all it was a fun movie to watch.
we need to reintroduce it to the people of today...

Burning Man, before it completely jumped the shark, used to get described as Mad Max-ish often, but I always thought Tank Girl was a more apt description.

I agree. Personally, I think this movie just plain blows, but make it 100% animated and fix a few plot and characters flaws, then "Tank Girl" has the potential to really kick some ass. The idea behind it is awesome, but it was done all wrong.

Killer Version of "Girl you want" and.... I really like Lori Petty! She is the coolest... I am a year older than her, (Sorry Lori.... we are old)...She just has the coolest voice and attitude! If she is in Star Trek next gen or Tank Girl, she is still too coool, keep it up Lori!!

Not-so-fun fact: After its release, Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett had put the film's producers on the top of his Shit list. In fact, because the film did badly, he stopped making Tank Girl for 10 years.

Tank girl really is infiliated with culture. The art was so good a band wanted the artist from the comics Gorillaz. Theres a rebel looking girl that rides in a mini tank in wrestling to me it resembles tank girl her name is shotzi Blackheart. And this last one may be far-fetched but princess from the walking dead is the most comical thing to twd. She just reminds me of it idky. Edited also I heard Margot Robbie is making a movie reboot she's tank girl. She actually is Australian and she has played Harley Quinn so lol. I wish they made a TV series though.
Owned this on VHS, showed it to all my friends and my mother as well. They didn't like it that much, pretty uncultured if you ask me.

Still listening in 2021, Also agreed movie wasn't EPIC but it was good, for someone raised on Fallouts 1 and 2 it was still better than over the top mad max and water world that mainly focuses on the grim and serious tones this one had it classic absurd comedy factor that i loved. Also, read the comics and they were self-aware enough to acknowledge that movie was 'meh...' in thier own way. Still great number to start work day for me. Cheers from Poland

From 0:42 to 0:44 you can see the Asteroid that destroyed the world as we know it and created the World that Tank Girl lives in. This event happened in the year 2017 according to the back story of the movie, and 2017 is next year.

Eh. Just a shame the whole movie wasn't animated like those little vignettes around the middle and end. Animation just seems like it would have suited the whole tank girl theme better then live action.

Is this off the DVD? The bluray I have seems to have a different version of the United Artists logo, however this version here is how I remember it.

It's a pretty terrible movie, tbh. However, I've probably watched it 5 times because I love Tank Girl the character so much. (and this song) I call it Snake Plissken Syndrome: I don't like the movie, but love the character.
