I remember when I was 13, I was staying in a hotel room with my parents. It was about 2am, I was hyper, my dad was drunk and my mum was trying to get to sleep and we turned on the TV to the music channel and this started playing. I remember vividly getting to 2:50 and my mum shouting "can you turn that shit off, I'm trying to sleep". It's such a mundane memory yet it makes me laugh every time I hear this song

Oh yes, i was born in 94, so when this came out, i was like 5-6 yo. I discovered this song while playing Fifa 99 (or 98...). But strangely enough, i'm the only one who knows this song among people of my age that i know (I was born in the 90's Russia and live in France since i'm 7-8 yo). Same for Bomfunk MC's Freestyler song. Guess it depends where you live...

I’ve been listening to this song ever since performing a dance to it in 3rd grade. I’m 23. It’s just so damn catchy and fun. Fatboy slim’s songs are unique and kind of unpredictable. You don’t know what he’ll mix into an already catchy beat
Saw him live in 2019 at the Singapore F1 grand prix show, didn't expect much. He arrived dressed as a British tourist, turned on his stuff and 30 seconds later 50 thousands people were jumping. One of the best concert ever for me.

Norman got clearance to use all the music he sampled, and as there were so many he ended up paying 100% of the royalties out and got nothing himself - apart from the satisfaction of making great music, and making money for other musicians that wouldn't have earned these royalties otherwise.

Q : Thinking of “Bird of Prey” and other Fatboy Slim classics, you use a lot of high profile samples. Tell me about what’s involved in getting clearance.
A : Lawyers. Two lots of lawyers, our lawyers and the person’s you sampled lawyers, and nowadays there’re lawyers who simply deal with samples. So you just have to come with an arrangement with the person you’re going to sample - sometimes it’s expensive, sometimes it’s not. It’s a necessary thing for what I do. Sometimes the record company would say to me “Why don’t you just pay it yourself? It would be so much cheaper” So I would say “Yeah, but it wouldn’t be so much fun”
Q : What’s the most you’ve had to pay for a sample?
A : 100%. Royalty for the entire song. If there was more than a 100%, I probably would have paid that.
Q : Can we ask which song?
A : Well it’s normally when there’s more than one sample. When you have to split it between say ‘The Rockafeller Skank’ there was four different samples on it we had to clear, and they all wanted 40%, or 50%, and we were like “Hold On, there’s only like 100% that’s available”. So we were like, “you can all have 25%”, and there was none left for me.
