- Martin Place Metro has reached an exciting stage, with all four of its station entrances now visible for the very first time!
I start with Martin Place Metro South, covering the entrance on Castlereagh Street which includes some very colourful public art! I also take a look at the other entrance on Elizabeth Street, and explain how height differences resulted in some stairs and an additional balcony level.
I then take you on a virtual tour underground, using the latest Sydney Metro photos to guide you. I also show you the interchange from the western end of the Sydney Trains Eastern Suburbs Line platforms which has recently been completed.
I then cover the south integrated station development above which is called "39 Martin Place"
It's then over to Martin Place Metro North, for a look at its two entrances which are on the Castlereagh Street and Elizabeth Street corners of Hunter Street.
This is an especially exciting entrance exit, being much grander. It also features a large sculpture called "Continuum" which is very visible from both entrances.
I finish off by covering the north integrated station development above, which is called "1 Elizabeth", and reveal the entrance to this building for the very first time.

Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

I love the way they've tastefully created a modern building that fits in with it's surrounding architecture - that public art piece is awesome too. Great video as always Paul!
I think they have done a wonderful job integrating the new building into its surroundings. Well done to the project management and architects.
I think they're hideous 70's throw-backs. There are much more attractive ways to integrate them into the surrounds. I'd personally prefer a sandstone cladding with perhaps a touch of decorative brushed metalwork trims (if not carved sandstone), with the sandstone representing Sydney's original building blocks and the metal representing industry and technology. At least for the three levels dedicated to the station.

Existing Martin Place station really needs a refresh
Yes it could do with an update, but its still functional and large enough for today's passenger usage.

The Eastern Suburbs line, particularly Martin Place and Kings Cross, have a definite 1970s vibe and Sydney does not have a lot of that era' public infrastructure left. Refresh, good. Replace, not good.

Glad you enjoyed it! Don't book your flights yet! The offical line is still "the middle of the year", so could be July, August or September. My understanding is that the opening date will be announced about 6 weeks before, and I'm sure that will be well publicised!

Worth noting 1ES is also integrated with 50MP on every second level as the new Macquarie HQ is essentially both buildings together as an integrated campus

The whole architecture of all the new stations look impressive from your great videos Paul. I'm looking at some of the Melbourne metro stations that are still incomplete but from what was done in Sydney, they will be far more aesthetic and integrated. Well done Sydney- I look forward visiting in a few months.
Yes it does, and glad this comes across well in my videos. I think the Metro Tunnel stations will be pretty special, and will have many of the features that you're seeing in these Sydney Metro stations.
Within 12 months after opening Melbournians will destroy them with graffiti anyway so what’s the point

You're very welcome! Yes the new buildings do look amazing now. Martin Place Station was closed over the long Easter weekend, and I had a feeling they would remove the hoardings during that time, and I was right!
Another wonderful video on the metro stations. The stations are extraordinary engineering feats and have exciting art works and interior designs. I can't wait to see them for myself!

Another fantastic video, thanks Paul! It really helps explain what is quite a confusing station lay out. I think these are the two best TODs on the entire line, the two towers really are beautiful. The loop art piece is superb as well. Very keen to see the video for Gadigal. From the very few photos I've seen of the station itself, it will give Victoria Cross a run for the most stunning after Central.

Recently, I had to go into Macquarie Street; Amazed by the new buildings associated with the metro project. Really like the metallic mobius strip artwork which looks timeless and will age well. I'm not so convinced the colourful tiled mosaic artwork shaped like an eye will age as well. It already looks like something out of the 70s. Maybe it will grow on me 🙂
Yes, the mobius sculpture looks amazing, and I definitely prefer that to the south station public art.

The Martin Place station looks very grand. It fits in with the rest of the Sydney CBD. Watching the construction of the City and Southwest extension has been educational and fun, and it makes me want to do a return trip to see it in person. Is there a definite opening date for the line yet beyond later in 2024? Thanks, Paul, for the work you put in to make these videos.
Yes it certainly is, and glad you enjoyed watching the City and Southwest extension being built. The official word on opening is still "the middle of this year", but my understanding is that an exact date will be announced about 6 weeks before. Glad you appreciate the work involved.

Paul ,thanks for another great & informative video. Any insight as to when the Metro line extension will open, other than the "mid year" corporate line we continually receive from the Govt?
Glad you enjoyed it. "Middle of this year" is still the best answer, as an exact date can't be announced until testing and various regulatory approvals have been completed. My understanding is that about 6 weeks notice will be giving for the actual opening date, and I'm sure that will be widely publicised.

I was in Sydney in February when i went to the Australian Museum for the Gold of the pharohs exhibit and did the big bus tour and Castlereagh Street was a mess along with Martin place I got a photo of the tower on Castlereagh street but it was still nearing completion
Yes it's been like that for quite a while! Much better now, with the high hoardings removed.

Hi Paul, Yes, it is gate-free between Metro and Train platforms, as long as you go via the passageway from the Arrivals Hall, and not up the main escalators. Still officially, the "middle of this year" with an exact date to be announced about 6 weeks before.
@@TransportVlog thanks Paul appreciated , just one other thing that caught my attention you mentioned a passage way to hunter street from Martin place I was under the impression that the hunter street arcade had closed because of construction for the western metro unless this is a new pedestrian walkway to hunter street
Love your work mate So when will the platform upgrades at Sydney Terminals centre station be finished any updates mate and by the way is the cladded Wall safe they are not the same material that was used in apartment fire in the UK hope not
Thanks! Ballast, rails and a few sleepers have now appeared for platforms 13 and 14. This will be featured in my next multi-station update which should be out during next week. Highly unlikely! Since the Kings Cross fire in London, all materials used are designed to be fire-resistant. The fact that the Chalmers Street entrance survived the Surry Hills fire so well is testament to the materials used.
The artwork at the entrance reminds me of the INGSOC logo.

I don't know the cost details, but the new commercial developments would have helped pay for the cost of the station.

Not at this stage, but there will be when Hunter Street station opens as part of Sydney Metro. Martin Place, Hunter Street and Wynyard stations will all be linked together.

Probably not 24/7, but certainly late on weekends, with last trains at similar times to Sydney Trains services.

6:51 I think the folks in New Zealand are claiming a set of escalators on the Auckland City Rail Link will be the Southern Hemisphere’s 2nd longest after Sydney at 40m length
That's interesting! If the Central and Martin Place escalators are almost the same length, then that might push Auckland City Rail into 3rd place and Perth Airport Station into 4th!

The weird thing is, if you want to go to Central, you can take either the train or the Metro. Seems like duplication.
Hi Mark, yes that's true, but one of the reasons for the Metro is to take the pressure off existing lines and stations, including the Eastern Suburbs Line. It also makes sense to have interchanges at Martin Place and Central.
Or the light rail. More options are a good thing
It's all in the name. Wouldn't be very Central if you bypassed it to avoid duplication.
What do you need…….Escalators, very long and heavy escalators, with lots of Macquarie bank branding.
That artwork looks like it was stolen from Hundertwasser, and not in a good way
I think there were some shady dealings with this getting built. It's not a coincidence a certain bank bought 50 martin place when this was still in the drawing boards, and no firm location "officially" set, as well as buying certain properties around the city.
Id also be suspicious about any artworks in sydney cbd as a certain lord mayor pushes artists, all friends, to get maximum cost on that and then some how gets a lot of "donations".
The modern art is a bit gross
