Starting to look at these again. Need something bright enough to light a set for recording a tutorial series. Don't think the LECO 500, 308D and the Daylite 60 will do it with out hitting ISO gabillion. Thanks for the video James.
This looks really great. Thanks for the review, we've been looking at the Aputure 120Ds for a while and have wondered if there is a decent alternative out there.
It's been an absolute workhorse of a light for me over the last month. My last two shoots with it were product demo videos and it's been a really noticeable jump in lighting quality for what I do. Not very handy for run and gun event work but for everything else I do, it's damn good. They'll been on display at the Photography Show this year on the Pixapro stand.
I weirdly did this test the other day. I was doing a high ISO comparison on the GH5S next to my C100 and I had it 1/2000 and only then did I see a flicker, so you're absolutely fine at 50fps and 100fps.
Do you find that there is a lot of benefit of having the B variant vs the daylight fixed D one? In an office environment would you be looking to match the environment's colour temperature? Sorry for the basic questions, I've only really shot reviews for my channel so have had total control but looking to do more and trying to understand if the extra cost of the B was worth it. Many thanks! Chris
For me personally, there is a huge benefit of having the Bicolour version over the daylight. In a lot of locations I film in, very often I cant have 100% control of the lighting. Doing a custom white balance using a colour checker and then being able to dial in the colour temperature I need is really valuable. You dont lose any output on the bicolour version against the daylight either.
James Watts thanks, I *really* appreciate the information, makes perfect sense but I kind of needed to tell me there’s a benefit. Will hopefully pick up my first 200D soon, looking forward to replacing my mediocre panel lights. Also looks like I’ll save a fortune vs the Aputure lights I was looking at! Thanks again!
No worries. I've never regretted not getting the Aputure lights and going with the Pixapro ones. Plus they have so many more modifiers in their store than just the deep paras, Aputure offer.
I'll have to get my hands on an aputure 120d and give it a good testing as I've really only spent a couple of days with it. I despised the light dome as it was a pain in the backside to setup, things have changed a bit with the II but its incorporating a system that's been around for a while now and isn't revolutionary. I just find the 100B MK III to be a great workhorse light.
Incredibly helpful review that’s saved me shelling out £750! Does this light work with the Aputure Light Dome II which is apparently easier to set up than the mark I?
The 100B has a Bowens S Mount just like the Aputure 120D so all the same modifiers work. Pixapro do a similar sized set of easy open rice bowl softboxes which are a dream compared to the light dome (especially the mark 1!) I've got the 105cm ricebowl one myself which is huge and not always practical for office environments but gorgeous and easy to set up. They've got a 65cm one which is exactly the same but smaller, you'll need to get the grid separately though. I think it's about £90 all in from memory.
Hi James, I was wondering if you're still loving this light? I'm considering getting one but their are so few reviews (especially on this bi-colour version) which makes me a little worried. Bad light or undiscovered wonder? Would appreciate your opinion after using it for a while. Thanks :)
Hey there. In all honesty, I use this light on a day to day basis for every single one of my corporate shoots with either a 65cm square softbox or a 90cm deep parabolic softbox and I absolutely couldn't do my job without it. As long as you've got mains power (as itll chew through a 150w v mount in under an hour) this is my go-to keylight for interviews, product demonstrations There is a slightly bigger version of this light, the 200B MKIII which is about 50% brighter. If I'm using my 100B MKIII with the 65cm softbox, I've got it gridded and normally at 90% power. If I'm using it with the deep parabolic it's at about 40% power. Personally, I think it's an unappreciated gem :-)
@@jw_film Thank you for the reply! Good to know it's still going strong, I really don't know why there's so little out there about it. Last day of their January sale, so, that's some good timing :) I have a few varying sized octoboxes from my photography side that I can try out on it for the moment, so that's handy, too! Thanks again :D
Hi Antonio, its about 25% brighter than the 120D. I used an 120D not that long ago and I usually shoot interviews at f4, iso 800. On that shoot, I remember going to ISO 1250 with the light at 100% (f4 was the max the lens would go to). On the 100B MKIII I know that would have been an ISO 800 shot at 70% (both using a deep parabolic softbox.
@@ajrc1987 I haven't managed to do it yet. Current world events have put on hold any video comparisons that I did have planned. The test I did do with it was a paid shoot and it was the light provided in the kit rental for the day.
Thank you for your time, I have the Pixapro one but I was hesitating that the numbers they give we’re true. Overall, I love the light but I haven’t had a great experience with their customer service.
You do not get the same output at all colour temperatures. As with most lights the intensity drops through the kelvin range. Sorry James but you are wrong here, if you not please verify with evidence. Thanks
Great video. But regarding 2:50 Haven't you used an umbrella for that? Would you say that works as well? I can only afford 1 keylight atm and am torn between a VNIX 1000S/1500S and this spot. Thanks
At 2.50 I've used a soft box which is built for the VNIX 1500S and that has a grid on it. www.essentialphoto.co.uk/product/softbox-for-pixapro-vnix1500-series-led-video-lights/ The VNIX 1500S is more practical in terms of portability, battery plate is already mounted onto the light. The bicolour version of the VNIX is a 50/50 split between 5600 and 3200 Kelvin but its 50% on or off whereas the 100B MK III maintains full output no matter what colour temperature. If you're undecided and can make it, come to the Photography Show in Birmingham next weekend and Pixapro will have all their lights on display and chat to one of the guys on the stand and they can walk you through each product.

Really good video man! Do you know if it flickers filming at 50fps and 100fps?

Nice that’s there’s another option

Hello James, Are you sure they are brighter than the Aperture 120d? I haven't seen any test in real life, only by numbers.

Hi ,James, so you get 11000 lux/m on 5600 ? Or both 3200 and 5600? And if so you should have double the power on 4400K?
You get maximum output at all colour temperatures
You do not get the same output at all colour temperatures. As with most lights the intensity drops through the kelvin range. Sorry James but you are wrong here, if you not please verify with evidence. Thanks
