I love to experiment in the garden. I tried one last year with sweet corn and doing it again this year. Corn is grass, sooooo, I take and pound holes in my back yard after mowing the grass in the pattern of a block. Holes are about 2" apart. Can make it any size you want. Then I drop soaked corn kernels into the holes and water. When they come up about 3 inches I put compost around them and mulch. Then I just water and fertilize. Best sweet corn I've ever grown and the greenest leaves you will ever see. You can make a block anywhere in your yard. No tilling or preparing the soil. Hope your cucumber experiment works.

I totally get it about the acid rain. As a pilot myself, I know about what planes give off while in the air. Add to that being in a flight pattern and/or landing and takeoff pattern only makes things worse. Those who are not experiencing that but giving you a hard time about it should look to the sky and see how close they are to an airport. I knew Lori was a no nonsense gal. Showed that bear what's for! lol

I want to share a cucumber recipe. When I was a child mom did this every summer. 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water and 3/4 cup white sugar. Pour into a pot and heat the mixture so the sugar dissolves completely. Allow this to cool and 30 minutes before dinner slice up onion and cucumbers into a bowl.(you can also use red pepper slices too) I always shake black pepper on top. When you are finished reserve the brine in a mason jar and reuse up to 2 weeks if stored in the refrigerator. I hope everyone enjoys this!

Bossman... Lori is an excellent cook. I could almost taste that Zuchini Parm!
Your garden has looked better. For years now, you've seen the forest loose certain species. Cherry trees, Basswood, and others. Something is going on. No doubt.
One thing, you'll never starve. Grilled Ribeye, nothin' better! It just makes good backwoods logic!
Hope you're having a great Summer. Great video!

Good job on the grill overhaul. Takes a special talent to keep and think of parts that can be used to fix something they were not originally intended for. That steak says you did a great job. Lori is little but mighty, she works like a man building and chases of bears calmly. You two are the dynamic duo.

My husband replaced the guts of our gas grill and we used it for another 2 or 3 years. When bottom and sides were too far gone he removed the "grill" parts and turned it into a side folding work bench with butcher block top. It all lays flat on top when open and he can drop the sides for easier storage. He uses it all the time and loves it!

    JC,
Another good video. I think some people miss the obvious stuff right in front of their face cuz they're too busy! Busy on the phone, busy with life, busy trying to keep up with the Jones etc. but you are rite about the crap they are spraying in the air. The paint on my excursion roof looks like i live on a salted Coast, it's bubbling, rusting and peeling, the rest of the body absolutely no rust, chips or wear.

Greetings from New Zealand.I have been an organic gardener for over 50 years and have the same problem as you over the last five years. We are not getting enough days of sunshine and the night time temperature is near zero most nights all summer. This stunts the growth of all vine crops and we have to move indoors.I get around the pollination problem by planting heaps of radishes, celery, etc early and let them go to seed and all their tiny flowers occur just when the flowers on the tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers need it there are clouds of insects available to pollinate them coming off the small flowers and they work the larger ones like mad.

My biggest frustration is with Utube. Every time I talk about the environment, they tank my channel. They demonetized my last videos and then plaster them with ads for their own benefit. I'm about done here.

Thanks Boss and Laurie, my cucumbers aren't doing well as well. Adapt, observe, adapt and observe and adapt that's gardening. Keeps the mind active, but humans can you please stay out of the process!!!

Hello J.C. and Lori! Glad to see you're doing good! One thing I had been wondering about was how pollination was taking place in your greenhouse; you answered that today! Have you ever considered beekeeping; my Father and I did it for a few years, until he got too old to do it any longer. I know you have bears there, (see end of this video!) but you can "bearproof" the bee yard. You would be good at it, I.m sure! It would be interesting to see how well your garden might do as a result of more bees. Keep up the great videos, (and garden!) All the Best, and God Bless! ~Lou

I've considered it but never acted upon it. Maybe someday but I do enjoy hand pollinating. It keeps me busy as a bee haha :-)

I know you don't buy charcoal for a wood bbq but with the propane grills I have found if you don't line the tray of the propane grill with volcano rocks, the grease and the splatter catch on fire and burn the hell out of what ever is on the grill. But you can get the volcano rocks for nothing if you go to a strip mall and use a bucket to scoop up the volcano landscape rocks that are in the slots between the building and the sidewalk, instead of going to home depot or lowes to buy a bag of volcano rocks. Even if you are using a cast iron pan I think a thick layer of volcano rocks heats up and makes for a more even cooking temperature with propane grills. Your pizza creations with the coleman oven on a propane burner look so tasty.

Darn pesky bears, always inviting themselves over for dinner. They better watch it, or they will be dinner!

We have a small bear that keeps coming here around 8 to 9:45 am. I question if someone local has been feeding it and then it leaves through our property in the morning. I like to photograph bears and have photographed a lot through the years. But it's funny how instinct kicks in here and I end up chasing them away before I even think about photographing them. Just seems like there are a lot more black bear attack stories now. A bear here broke into someone's kitchen recently. We were watching a farmers cow feed wagon for a bear. We'd pull up and the bear would stick it's head out over the edge of the trailer covered in dust. Another bear would visit a local corn crib. She only has three legs.

On the subject of bees. For the past 10 - 15 years my vehicles would have loads on little yellow streaks on the paint throughout the summer. I looked it up, it's honeybee poo. Guess what, not a single yellow streak this summer. Where have all the honeybees gone?
Not very neighborly chasing the "locals" away from the BBQ. LOL

Very few of the jets in the air are actually spraying. The tankers in the program fly in the stratosphere and don't leave stripes.

I hand-pollinate as well but have noticed that smaller flying insects, aside from any bees or butterflies, are also going from flower to flower. There may be more pollinators out there than we realize. I planted a number of flowers (annuals) in the garden, to have the various pollinators visiting regularly even before the vegetable flowers (tomatoes, beans, peas and various squashes) were coming out.

Agreed and I've noticed them too. We usually plant tons of flowers in the garden but didn't this year. My plans were only to plant the corn but you know how it goes.

It’s always good to see you both 🙂 Oh boy that zucchini parm looks wonderful! All those cukes!! Nice! I appreciate you sharing your observations. In years past we have had beautiful and flourishing vegetable gardens, but these last 4 or 5 years we have not. Deer get some of the plants, but the ones left, don’t produce much at all. Take care, and God Bless!
