Almost two years later and Jesse still sets the bar for hardware video reviews in the flight sim market (both in terms of quality and content)...no one else comes close.
Virpil seems like an inferior product, lack of modularity ( can't swap buttons ), worst button than of MCG, lesser HAT switch ( although this is subjective, personally I like having more switches and options )
Old comment but for anyone thinking on getting vkb or virpil all i will say that , there is immense amount of thinking that gone in to vkb had virpil before, but vkb ultimate is something that feels like taken off actual plane
Honestly, I own both a Virpil Warbrd and VKB Gunfighter stick. While I do like VKB. I find Virpil is more versatile for different genres of games while VKB Gunfighter feels like it's meant just for aviation rather than just video games. Regardless, You really can't go wrong with either Brand. They have both proven that they deserve to be on top. Both Companies have good support while I did have alot of awesome interactions with Virpil Customer Support. Those guys are legends.
Gladly I waited to buy a new joystick until now. I almost bought the Virpil one because of the video about the plastic MCG when you mentioned the rattling buttons which would have been a big no no to me. So I just stumbled upon this video again and I'm amazed about the quality increase and definitely gonna order it now. :)
I almost bought a virpil just now, they look like they are taking money and not responding to people even after a month. Do you have any idea how long it take for them to ship to the us? I guess you may not live in the us, just wanted to check. Thank you.
@@callmethreeone No sorry I don't know. Friend of mine told me that they even have send his joystick to him quite quickly despite the sanctions getting laid on Russia and he lives in the US. But as several weeks of sanctions have passed now and also Russia's Government has their people mostly cut off from the worlds internet I can imagine that there are a lot of problems ordering from their store now.
Thank you so much for your videos and detailed reviews! I've been doing research to upgrade both my stick and throttle from CH and was trying to decide between VKB and Virpil. Your video quality is superb and in my opinion the best in all the sim gear review. My Gunfighter Pro, MCG, extension and the desk mount is coming next week. Really appreciate your great work!
@@jessecalder Hi Jesse, I finally got everything tuned and loving every minute with the stick and the VIRPIL T-50CM3 you recommended. Just wondering about rudders options for upgrades, I’ve seen your review on the VKB and Virpil rudder pedals, just wondering if you have tested or used the Thrustmaster TPR, Slaw or MFG Crosswind? Thanks!
Stumbled onto your channel by accident and I have to say, I'm extremely impressed with your production quality and presentation. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.
I absolutely love the regular version of this grip.... Only reason I prefer the SCG over this grip is the size. My hands are considered medium size I guess so the top buttons on the MCG are a bit of a reach (though not terrible) and that can get tiring after a while when playing space sims like Elite that require utilizing those buttons quite consistently. Otherwise, this is a top notch grip. Also, as always, top notch reviews from you brother. Well done. Well organized. Well articulated. Keep them coming.
Just getting into sims again, the last time I touched one was back when I was a kid in the 90's so well about as far as I got was Falcon 4.0 and Top Gun: Fire At Will, very cool and thanks for the info! I just bought the GNX WWII Throttle and the Gladiator NXT EVO SCE stick. The sim community seems to be totally awesome and everyone has been so helpful. Especially for people like me who can't fly irl this is as close as it'll probably get! Rad!
What I like about the stick is that you can't accidently activate the push button functions when moving the buttons up, down, left, or right. The VKB buttons have very distinct clicks. I had the Virpil stick and it was a piece of shit. The buttons on the Virpil felt mushy in comparison. The VIrpil twist function barely worked, and I could never use the push feature of any of the buttons because I would always constantly push them by accident. Nice review.
I bought the entire Virpil package for $1000, and the only thing that I'm still using is the v3 Throttle with the finger grips. I plan on ditching the throttle as soon as I find a better one because I had to raise the throttle as high as my VKB Sim stick due to the pivoting of the grip being at such an extreme angle at the idle position that it is causing my wrist to hurt. I plan to switch to using Voice Attack with voice commands instead of relying on lots of buttons.
I own warthog, mgc pro and the ultimate since last weeks. I'm completely agree with you, mcg pro feels low quality, not at the range of price it has in my opinion, so your review abou low quality feelings was accurate. But the ultimate version is another animal. In think is the BEST grip available nowadays. Is the perfect grip and i hope vkb releases soon their throttle, that i hope will have same quality than mcg ultimate. You should speak also about the vkb software wich is more more advanced than virpils one.
@@alexandsimba haven't tried the warthog but the VKB grip is very steady. The base comes with different springs and cams to adjust the tightness of the grip as well
I'm sure I watched this vid 3+ times before I bought mine but it's worth mentioning for as nice as this stick is it is also massive. I regret buying it as a desktop stick, it's just too big. On a mount on an extension as a center stick, perfect. As a right stick paired with an scg left stick on an omni I feel like quasimodo.
Yours' is the review I was waiting for. And in fact I think your critique of MCG Pro helped a lot to push VKB into a more 'aesthetic' (which includes acoustic) consideration of their buttons and switches.
I bought this Ultimate stick on your recommendation and also the Monstertech chair. I received the keyboard bracket and telephone mount. But, how do you mount these things on the VKB Mount as seen in your video? Please help.
I agrees with you about the Pro being a bit of a let down in terms of its plastic construction and clicky buttons, when I try my friend's Ultimate and Pro it is like an eye opener, the Ultimate just feels "good" compare to the Pro.
Nice. Felt your previous HOTAS content was top-notch. And, since I can't stomach the price of a new GPU...and I'm kinda in the need to replace my 20+ year old CH Fighter Stick, this is timely.
I went from a CH Combatstick to a mcg+gunfighter mkIII+200mm extension, and I can tell you, its a change you will never regret! Not to bash the CH products, they are really good on their price range. But the vkb stick with long extension its just a whole diferent experience
Outstanding review brother and that intro was pretty epic 👍 I don't have a VKB stick but your review of the VKB pedals really helped, I find them great for helos in DCS. Thanks 🍻
Hi I'm DCS newbie been considering building out my rig with a win wing super Taurus throttle and F18 hotas, but since seeing Jesse's review on the VKB GUNFIGHTER MCG ULTIMATE and looking at the seemingly more hats buttons and versatility as opposed to the win wing F18 flight stick. The VKB ultimate really looks awesome and I wonder if anyone can elaborate more on the versatility of the gunfighter ultimate. I must say it's quite impressive.
Jesse thanks for doing this review. First offlet me say I've clearly bought into the VKB ecosystem myself and Jesse's assessment is spot on. There is no fluff here. Speaking to this stick in particular. As an owner of this, I would support the argument it is the best made grip on the market. There are only a few things that bother me, which I feel the bar could be raised. 1) MOC (materials of construction) all metal buttons thought-out should have been implemented. The plastic feel is a turnoff for me. Although I feel this revision was a major leap forward, I know VKB can take it to the next level. 2) Fit and finish. Now I know this is ultra picky, but I would have liked to have seen better mating transitions. It's just one of those flight sticks you want to marvel, it's hard for me to let slide. 3) Tools- give us a decent T-handle all wrench. The tools included are sub par and get immediately filed as appropriate. This isn't a isolated issue to VKB. Note- do not let these deter you from pulling the trigger on this solution. Side bar- if you're an VKB ecosystem user like myself. If you're using their T-Rudder MK4 pedals. Software wise you need to make sure you only install the non- twist software for the MCG-UT (twist design), and physically lock the twist feature. Otherwise you will most likely have conflights and your rudder system will not work. Note- this is utilizing 1 MK2 black box. I recently ironed this out with two VKB technical support staff, which did solve the problem. Ps- Jesse- where did you aquire the T-channel hardware for the keyboard stand setup? Here's to hoping VKB knocks it out of the park with their premium line Throttle to pair with this stick! Cheers. Take care all ~ Mike
if you gonna charge me 600$ for a grip it better not have shortcuts, which mcgu does have, plastic buttons which makes the metal body almost useless, and especially that plastic trigger, also too bad the 2 gray buttons arent swapable it would have been great to be able to leave the 2 analog sticks plus the 2 hats, and installing the grip is a bit finicky
While the MCG Ultimate is undeniably the greatest grip out there, I have a couple small knit-picks with it that I think you missed. The swapable hat modules are NOT the same type of hats as those pre-installed in the grip. They have IMO an inferior feel to them and the center push on them is really way too hard. Secondly, I got a bit of sticksion on the break lever out of the box and had to take the grip apart to re-grease it with nyogel 767a. I use that lever for mining throttle in Star Citizen and before re-greasing, I had a hard time controlling in fewer than 5% increments, but now I can easily make 1% changes. Again, minor stuff, but things I think are worth mentioning in an in-depth review. All I can say is I hope VKB gives the SCG left and right the Ultimate treatment as well!
Yeah I love my SCG, if the ultimate is really that much better, it must be amazing. Been holding out for an all metal SCG Ultimate, but haven't heard a peep about it. Very tempted to grab the MCG Ultimate, but I'm not 100% sure since the button layout on the SCG is perfect except for a missing break lever.
fuck, i was counting on using the other hats because i need more buttons and you saying they not the same quality? well i might pass then thats a very big deal
@@mirshia5248 I don't know if "not the same quality" is correct... they just feel different. The ones built into the grip are Alps Hat Switch modules, all 8-ways built into a single device. The swappable modules are constructed from 5-way tact switches. What this means: The built-in ones have a but longer throw, but are easier to activate. The swappable ones are shorter throw but much more "stiff" to press. Personally I prefer the built-ins, but I know a lot of people who prefer the prefer the swappable ones, so it's not quite as objective as good vs bad quality.
@@mirshia5248 I'm just not a fan of the inconsistencies within the same grip. I don't think I'd be so aware of the fact that I prefer one over the other if they had used the same hat switch design between the grip and swappable modules
A bit late I know, but great review. Is it possible to have a review of the vkb gunfighter mk III vs VPC Warbird to use on a desk or to use without extension, apparently nobody really want to talk about that on UA-cam except you, I really want to upgrade my warthog base, and I'm not restricted by money or compatibility, I just want a real answer of wich is simply The Best One, I'm only playing DCS or MSFS2020, I'm not in the space sim thing :)
Sadly this came out after my Mk.II & MCG not pro purchase (because I can't tick boxes properly). That being said as far as ergonomics goes, I think the Russian stick is superior to the F-18 one. You're correct saying it's a bit too big, I feel like it was design by & for some Big slav hand. Also you can convert the F-16 (Plug & Play) & F-18 (Need a bit of filling) Grip from TM.
There are much more important things about a joystick than how the grip shell feels, in the same way there's a lot more important things about a car than the quality of the steering wheel leather trim! :D Everything from VKB, going right back to their old Gladiator Mk II stick has been better by any sensible measure than the WH stick (the WH throttle's a solid unit though). Saying the the Gunfighter with an MCG Pro Ultimate on it, competes with the TM Warthog is like saying a BMW M340 competes pretty well with a Vauhall Vectra! :D Yeah, no shizzle, Sherlock! :D
@@stevedavey1343 How it feels is subjective which was my point on competing with the feel of the joystick. If you don't feel comfortable driving the car, then are you going to buy it and be miserable because the internals are better?
@@alexandsimba Trust me, you'd soon forget about the feel of the 'cheap zinc alloy grip requiring an overly strong centre return spring in the badly designed gimbal due to its nose-heaviness' when you used a Gunfighter, even with the plastic MCG Pro. Just like you'd forget about that 'leather steering wheel trim' on a Vectra when you drove a BMW M340i ;)
Great review. Me too your channel, but your excellent review pushed me away from the virpil alpha and toward the gunfighter ultimate. Keep up the excellent work.
I was looking at getting two gladiators. Would you say I should wait and get 2 combat grips? Also the bases, can I pick and choose or how does that work?
@@xOdin330 gladiator NXT are the absolute best for the price. But if you're going to get the combat grips then the gunfighter Mk III base is king. Pair it with the ultimate or normal MCG or even the space sim grip
hi, ty for share. i've just get a gunfighter ultimate mk3 with no estension. i change the 2 cams inside to avia H and putted in 40 spring. i 've got this problem: when i move the stick there'are bad sounds like cloc!cloc!. how could i change that?
Missed you streaming! You part of the reason why I made the Virpil leap. VKB makes some good stuff. Wish their sticks were compatible with each other. As I need me an actual fighter jet stick!
Is the SU-30 a joke to you? :D Seriously though, if you insist on putting a filthy imperialist western grip on the Gunfighter, you can; VKB do sell the TM Warthog grip adapter, which also works with the TM Hornet too.
@@stevo905 If all you want to do is look at your grip then that's fine. Personally, I'm not really looking at my kit when I'm flying (especially in VR). Also, whilst Virpil make great kit and they're not churning out garbage, it does seem like QC issues pop up a little more then for VKB. That's due to the differences between the manufacturing processes used by each manufacturer. VKB tend to design out human worker caused QC issues more than Virpil.
@@stevedavey1343 Part of the reason why VKB stuff took longer to complete design and put on production, even with the "feel cheap" plastic MCG Pro and the Kosmosima were made sure to function and fit for mass production(not the F-14 though, kind of disappointed they ditch the stock offset function just for that twist grip that no body flying a cat ever give a fuck with), another reason would be the fact they were making these in China, a lots of QC problem needed to iron out before mass production can begin, otherwise it is just asking for trouble by slapping the "cheap chinesium stuff never work" label onto the product.
@@4IN14094 Eh, getting the crappy imperfect human out of the way as much as you can for repetitive lower skill manufacturing tasks is a smart move, wherever you're manufacturing. ;) It also leads to a reduction in costs over time, which is why VKB's kit is competitively priced against Virpil's kit.
Thanks for the great video. I'm looking to upgrade my current TM16000 stick/throttle/rudder combo and I was leaning towards virpil products until I saw THIS! My question to you is, when you set up your stick between your legs (center mount) instead of side mount, can I use a regular office chair? Or do I need to use a chair that has a space between the legs? I'm not sure if I'm saying it correctly. I feel like if I use a regular office chair, the stick with extension will hit the chair when I pull back or I feel like I would have to extend my arm and be further away from the stick for clearance. I hope I didn't confuse you.
Do you know if there is anyway to adapt Virpil grips to the Gunfighter base? Would love a clutch damper center stick for flying helicopters. But would love to use Virpil grips. Maybe I am best off waiting for Virpil to make a clutch damper grip.. hmm.
Thanks for those detailed reviews. Now since you tested them all. Virpil Constellation Alpha or VKB MCE Ultimate? Mainly space but I want to step into DCS as well, so currently I was thinking VKB MCE Ultimate and Virpil Throttle.
I was going to get swivel chair mounts from monster tech because I work at my desk too but they will be way more expensive than the kit that has keyboard/cupholder/x2 tablet or phone mounts and such. I just want to know is it either A: Easy to remove for when I am working or B: easy to reach everything on your desk while working while it's still hooked up?
Does this one have the same sorta stiffness when moving into the deadzone as the warthog? When approaching the gimbal's centre going from up to down or vice versa is murdering me at the moment.
I do mention that the 20cm extension exceeds the GF's ability to produce the amount of resistance I prefer. If you like a lot of dry clutch and light controls then you could probably get away with it with topped out springs.
So I'm looking on the website and I see all types of desk mounts The vs. you have looks like the one I'm interested in is it the UCM-LWS by chance? and the stick is the ordered is the Gunfighter Pro -S Mk.111 Modern Ultimate with twist adapter Let me know please Thanks again Love that I found your channel BTW VKB are they located in USA
Hi Jesse, I'm inclined to buy some serious Sticks to up my game a bit :) After having viewed both your review of the Virpil Constellation and the Gunfighters here above.. I was wondering which one you would ultimately pick?
I really want to get one of these grips but they are sold out for 6 months in Australia. That's ok I'll just keep using my 90's beige office keyboard and mouse with the ball inside it. I just have to clean the lint out of the ball rollers first.
In one of your other videos you mention that the gunfighter base can be tuned so the stick doesn't return to center when pushed forward. Like a throttle except in HOSAS. One follow up question. Does this disable the return to center function if the stick is pulled back? Throttle forward staying on makes sense. Having to find center perfectly to stop the throttle doesn't. Appreciate any details you can provide. Thank you
To accomplish this you have to remove springs from an entire axis so it won't have any centering force forward or backward in your example. I would suggest calibrating that axis to be a bit more forgiving at zero (make a larger dead zone in the center of that axis) to make center easier to find.
Awesome vid Jesse many thanks 👍🏻 I would be curious to know what your favourite setups are per genre or game even if you don't have all the parts currently available to show How are you finding the secret labs? Still debating one of those over a noblechair as I've bad things about secrets labs customer support in the UK and their shady 5 year post on your social media warranty
Thanks for watching DMIB. I can't speak to customer service in the UK from SL but I still use my SL chair quite often and it has aged very little over years of daily use.
Re the grip size: I have medium to small size hands (glove size M) and I find the topmost buttons are mounted a bit too far up. Especially the red pickle button is a bit of a reach. It's not as bad as on the WH grip, but it is noticeable. What I would need is one more hole for the hand-rest, slightly above the topmost one. It's not a major issue and using the grip center-stick helps. I suspect the problem would be greater for me if I used this thing in the desktop configuration - but then again: Does anyone really do that with this grip? I was very close to getting this thing to replace my MCG Pro. In the end, I went with a Virpil throttle instead to replace my Warthog throttle - still waiting for that thing to be delivered, lol. The Ultimate is very tempting, but, to me, it didn't offer enough of a functional upgrade to justify the cost and then the hassle of trying to get rid of the Pro... and would anyone buy a stand-alone VKB grip anyway? Not sure. In any case, what I really would like on the Pro that the Ultimate has are those grip-mounted LEDs. I have my Gunfighter mounted on a UCM-S (center-stick) and the way I have the mount set up, the black box is in a place where you can't simply check its LEDs at glance. Since I just had some trouble with grip connection (fasteners were coming loose all the time for some reason, but VKB sent replacements already), I would've loved to be able to just look at my grip to see if there was trouble with the connection. Plus with the way the trim hat works, being able to glance down and see what mode the trim-hat is set to would also be very helpful. Overall the Ultimate is a "very nice to have", not a "must have" - if it's within your budget, I'd go for it - but it'd be the first item on my shopping list to get downgraded if I was trying to be a bit more sensible/frugal. All that said: I'm fairly certain I'll buy it at some point in the future - unless I go all in on Virpil and switch to a CM3-base. :D
Late thanks Jesse, Used my Gunfighter Mk2 with the Kosmosima some Years, and i swear at the Base. The Glutches are outstanding good. Ordered the MCG Ultimate now, after i builded my setup Throttel wise with the CM3 and Sharka Control Panel and some fine monstertech Mountings up. So i am glad to hear also by you that VKB made the homework with the buttons and Povs. Excided to get this mail, thats for shure. Ordered it with Kriilic labeled Buttons, whats fits this Grip good. Greetings, stay Healthy o7
I noticed you're using the short extension in this video, but which extension would you recommend when using the Monstertech Blackbird chair? I just purchased this stick and I'm eyeing the chair as well. I was thinking about buying the long bended extension, but it's hard to judge because I don't have the chair yet. Did you try it out?
I generally prefer a 200mm extension but the longer the extension the harder it is to get high resistances. I did try the 200mm but even with the highest spring load and dry clutch loaded up I found it just a might lighter than I like so I went back down to the 100mm extension and its awesome. With the Blackbird you can raise the base in the center position but you'll have to add some pieces.
I’m debating between getting a virpil cm3 throttle, and a gladiator nxt stick, or the gunfighter mkIII ultimate and a cheaper throttle. What do you think would be the better combo to prioritize?
Thanks for this review and all the other great content. I'm agonizing between a MCG Ultimate and a Virpil Constellation Alpha. I understand if you don't want to state a preference, but I'd love to know if you'd pick one over the other for DCS.
Thanks for watching Todd! Its a tough call and there are certainly differences between the two devices you are considering making it difficult for me to recommend one flat out over the other. My best recommendation is watch my vids on them and as many other vids as you can find to determine the one that best suits your needs/style. Thanks again for the kind words brother!
@@ighicedeamon I can't remember whether this was available at the time, but I went with the Virpil MongoosT-50CM2 grip. I'm not into space sims for the most part, and the T-50CM2 stick seems more flight sim-oriented and a more direct comparison to the VKB MCG. As for Virpil vs. VKB, I ended up going with Virpil because I like the idea of having as much as possible in the same ecosystem, and the VKB throttle isn't available yet. I ended up ordering the Virpil T-50CM2 stick and base along with the CM3 throttle and ace pedals on the Virpil Black Friday sale. I haven't received anything yet, but that was my thinking at least.
Would you NOT recommend a 200mm extension with this? Looking to pick up the mcgu and gf3, my first vkb product and im planning to center mount this, and i know most people usually say go with as long an extension as possible, but you recommended the 50mm. Just wondering what to go with
I usually prefer the 200mm as well but the heavier weight of the MCGU makes the setup feel too light for my taste when using the 200mm extension. But that doesn't mean you won't love it. If you can try both. Also I misspoke the extension I'm using is the 100mm not a 50mm. Its the only other extension available besides the 200mm.
@@jessecalder thanks, I was debating a 100 vs a 200, i was worried this would happen, that it would be too heavy and not springy enough. I have seen people recommend a 50 and 20 spring per axis I believe for the 200 extension
Yo, I've been following your channel posts for awhile and i enjoy watching the reviews! Your channel probably has the most VKB reviews with really indepth information regarding what you're reviewing. I wanted too request if you could take a look at the mid-tier VKB Gladiator pro NXT. It's $150 and has always been in stock, and that price tag hasn't budged or inflated. It also has good quality and feels better than the highly inflated x56 and other joysticks. I think we could both agree that VKB is relatively underated and isn't easy too find if you are just scrolling around on the internet, Covered by the larger companies such as logitch, thrustmaster, and Virpil. Long story short could you give a review on it and maybe compare it too a X56 rhino Joystick or another Stick that's comparible in non-inflated price?
Great Review as always. one thing i've been waiting for and really wanted is a metal trigger. the virpil trigger is disappointing (CM2) in its two-stage design and feel. But since the whole grip is plastic, I can't really expect the trigger not to be. I heard the Warthog is all metal but I'm not sure about the trigger, I'll have to check into that.
Honestly mate forget the WH. There's more to a joystick than the trigger. The gimbal is the most important bit of a joystick. I have the Gunfighter + MCG Pro Ultimate and it's friggin gorgeous. The main trigger is plastic but it's solid and the feel is great and nicely muted.
Thanks Scott! Good gear is never overkill 😎. But in all seriousness I think the Gunfighter base is going to increase your flying enjoyment in any sim/aircraft. The grip choice you could consider going with is the KG12 pairing (a ww2 grip). Cheers!
The Cobra M5 used to be around 50$. I love the new sticks but too bad they have moved all of the prices way up. And the Cobra used to breach the gap between low end and top of the line, but now it's gone.
Hey Jesse, I really appreciate your videos and all the feedback you provide. I've been away from sims for a while and decided to jump back in. My first experience was in BMS with the Viper. Later I transitioned over to DCS and the A-10C. My setup HOTAS was Saitek's X-65F which I really enjoyed. Not sure why they stopped making it, but oh well!!! Anyway, I've been looking and looking trying to decide what HOTAS to purchase. Really want to upgrade my pit and have a nice setup vs. what I had before. Here's what I'm trying to figure out. Can I use the VKB Gunfighter MK.III with Virpil's throttle and control panels? That is my ideal setup I would like to have. If you can provide any info that would be great. And again, thanks for all your videos and the info you provide.
Great review! A few questions about the Stronghold mount system. Would you recommend it over Monstertech mounts? The main concern I have with Stronghold is that it appears to make you sit further away from your desk than Monstertech does. I would prefer to sit as close to my desk as possible and also, I feel like if you were to combine a Monstertech throttle mount with Stronghold stick mount, the resulting relative position of the throttle and stick might not be the most ergonomic. Also, it is very cool to see the Gunfighter base mount underneath the mounting plate on the mount system. Is this specific to the Stronghold mounts or is it a feature of the Mk. III Gunfighter base, meaning it would also mount underneath a Monstertech mounting plate?
Thanks Tommy! Its true mounting systems that are angled will put you a few inches further back from the monitor. The benefit being it puts any accessories you mount on it in a more comfortable position. I didn't mention it in the video as it wasn't a Stronghold video but it gives you a lot of control over your stick angle as well. To my knowledge the Stronghold is the only mount you can install the GF underneath. Both mounting systems are outstanding in the end. It will be a tough choice ;)
Bit late to the party here, but will just give you my input. I was torn between Stronghold and the Monstertech, and I landed on the Monstertech stand. Don’t regret the purchase at all. What is really great, for me, is that it is easy to stow the stand away when I don’t fly… also it is very sturdy and don’t have to worry about denting my expensive table. The big minus is the price.
The stronghold mount sticks up over your table whereas the monster tech is flat as it is fastened underneath your table. The latter therefore isn't so much in your way when you want to use the desk. I never have to remove my monster tech mounts as they are not in my way.
I feel like aheavy grip like this on the gunfighter base with the full length extension would make the springs feel even more weak. I've been trying to figure out if the virpil base has more spring resistance than the gunfighter, I have the heaviest spring setup possible on my gunfighter and it still doesn't feel strong enough. That's with the old MCG grip made from plastic. It's a fantastic joystick setup just wish it had a bit more spring tension.
He specifically says you shouldn’t use the long extension with this grip. Noobifier says he’s doing a GF3 review but it’s still not out yet, then a comparison, probably against the CM3 base, so might be worth looking at that when it comes out.
i am very interested in this base, because i think it would be a excellent choice for an omnidirectional throttle. If you remove the springs and just go for the friction it would even stay in place. Just like on the channel Afterimage Flight but even better. Are there any compatibility issues with Virpil products? because I am already driving a Alpha as my main.
Very cool idea Seppenstein. I play around with this concept in my SCG/GFII review video! Dry clutch ftw! If you mean can you run a VKB stick and another brand stick on the other side there won't be any compatibility issues. But you can't combine parts of each (ie. one brand's grip on the VKB base).
I've run a similar setup for over a year, now. I needed something that would work for space sims and flight sims. I ended up with the MCG Pro right hand, and the SCG Premium left....both on gunfighter bases. I removed the springs for fwd/bck (on the SCG), and adjusted the dry clutch. It works perfectly as a throttle, with smooth, adjustable action. I left the springs on for lft/rgt, and used a hard center cam so that throttle operation didn't accidently activate the lft/rgt axis. I've had zero problems with the setup. Works exactly as I had hoped.
@@ThrakazogZ and is there any sighn of loosening if you are running the dry clutch without the springs or is it still standing in place like a normal throttle?
@@lordseppenstein2559 After a little over a year of use, it still stays in place, exactly like a throttle. I haven't had to make any adjustments since initial setup.
@@ThrakazogZ Thank you this is the information i needed i just wish the same would be possible with virpil sticks. Not because i think they are much better but because i personally like the desighn much more. But this helps me making a decision. can you recommend a 3d printed adapter for angling the stick?
This metal upgrade paired with the dry clutch system, I think its finally sold me... The plasticky and clicky stuff from before is what gave me resevations, but I think they finally got me. REALLY wish the trigger was metal too though...
Personally i'd go with VKB if you're in the US just because you'll get it much quicker. If you don't like it, you can easily sell it for near full price while you're waiting for your Virpil product.
They are both very good mounts. The Stronghold is an outstanding value and built for the VKB lineup. The Monstertechs are more universal and Monstertech as a company offers more mounting options (that is their primary business after all) but are also quite a bit more expensive. It really just depends on where you see your simpit going and what controls you plan to invest in. Can't go wrong either way to be honest though.
@@jessecalder Thanks! I own a VKB setup but am a little worried that you sit too far away from the screen with the Stronghold setup. Any observations there?
I just ordered the NXT from this company. No receipt. No confirmation email. Just an order number, and my negative bank account. Did I just get ripped off? Cause it's crickets on there end.
Almost two years later and Jesse still sets the bar for hardware video reviews in the flight sim market (both in terms of quality and content)...no one else comes close.
Thank you brother very kind of you to say 🙏
I'd sure like see a video with the pros and cons with VKB vs Virpil being you have used them both.
Thanks for watching Leo!! You will love the MCG and GF combo its top notch kit congrats! Super glad I could be of help. Cheers!
Thank you Javelin appreciate that tons brother! And welcome!
His production quality is flawless, best I've ever seen on such a channel. Hat off to you man
@@BrownBearSimulation Thank you BBS very kind man!
Thanks pdunn appreciate it man!
Just ordered one of these to replace my WH, and a lot of that decision was down to this video so thanks! Now the waiting begins :D
Rad!
Came back to this one as looking at an upgrade and this just seems to hit the mark - sold!. Need some more vids though hope all going well.
So happy I didn't buy Virpil joystick now! I love their control panel but their sticks looked tacky and overpriced. I'll definitely get the vkb!
Module system is amazing! Really love it!
I purchased this grip on your recommendation. I’m not disappointed. Thanks.
Cheers man!
Brought this grip and its awesome, all metal lightweight beast. Biggest beef i have with the grip is the hat on the left side.
is it the true the extra buttons arent of good quality as the ones already installed in?
Dude that intro was fucking SICK. You just earned my sub! love the quality of the content.
Was eager to see this review given your thoughts on the MCG Pro. Thanks for this.
Very much like your new intro and outro as well.
Thanks Corsair!
Literally just got this yesterday it's incredible
Have you tried the warthog? I'm wondering how it compares, as my warthog is not very extension friendly (doesn't stay still when banking).
@@alexandsimba haven't tried the warthog but the VKB grip is very steady. The base comes with different springs and cams to adjust the tightness of the grip as well
Great videos! Very underrated channel. Thank you ma man!
Thank you Highlander appreciate that brother!
Stellar review as always :)
@@-few-fernando11 Thanks for that. Good feedback is helpful. Appreciated.
Ordered the mcg and mk iv base and the scg and same base today can't wait for it to arrive
I would love to see them do a track ball module
That would be slick
I just got this stick. Compared to this the warthog feels like a kids toy. The MCG Ultimate has such a premium feel
The ability to change those thumb sticks to hats is a game changer for me. I HATE slewing with sticks. Much rather prefer gated slewing.
Great review, thanks for sharing!
Outstanding review brother and that intro was pretty epic 👍 I don't have a VKB stick but your review of the VKB pedals really helped, I find them great for helos in DCS. Thanks 🍻
Thank you Chris appreciate it bro!
How do you like this stick when compared to the Virpil Alphas?
WOW I'm Glad I stumbled on your UA-cam channel I love it, Looks like I've made up my decision with HOTAS Look Out DCS here I come
Hi I'm DCS newbie been considering building out my rig with a win wing super Taurus throttle and F18 hotas, but since seeing Jesse's review on the VKB GUNFIGHTER MCG ULTIMATE and looking at the seemingly more hats buttons and versatility as opposed to the win wing F18 flight stick.
@@b34k97 ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, well yeah thats how hats work lol, phew you had me worried there
@@mirshia5248 I'm just not a fan of the inconsistencies within the same grip. I don't think I'd be so aware of the fact that I prefer one over the other if they had used the same hat switch design between the grip and swappable modules
Awesome review, what about Virpil Constellation Alpha how do you think they perform vs the VKB MCG Ultimate ? Looking forward to your reply @Jesse
Been waiting for your review before I order this. Thanks Jesse!
Awesome hope you enjoy it RR!
Finally someone to compete with thrust master warthog's heavier feel.

I got this thing as soon as it dropped. The best out there, Other than RealSim of course. But beats Virpil by far!

Missed you streaming! You part of the reason why I made the Virpil leap. VKB makes some good stuff. Wish their sticks were compatible with each other. As I need me an actual fighter jet stick!
Is the SU-30 a joke to you? :D
Seriously though, if you insist on putting a filthy imperialist western grip on the Gunfighter, you can; VKB do sell the TM Warthog grip adapter, which also works with the TM Hornet too.
VIRPIL ALPHA LOOKS BETTER!
@@4IN14094 Eh, getting the crappy imperfect human out of the way as much as you can for repetitive lower skill manufacturing tasks is a smart move, wherever you're manufacturing. ;) It also leads to a reduction in costs over time, which is why VKB's kit is competitively priced against Virpil's kit.
could anyone please help me?
I want to assign buttons for the GATE CONT axis

Does this come with a vibration motor? I cannot seem to find any info about it so I doubt it, but would be great if confirmed.
*Ey yo did you find manual for this joystick anywhere? I have no idea what leds on this grip means and VKB provided me with no information at all lol*
VKB's site shows this grip with the Gunfighter III desktop base is almost the exact same height as the Warthog stick and base. Is that so?
Hi
Good review! I just wonder which UCM Stronghold Table Mount - short or long - do you use with the 100mm extension?
Does this one have the same sorta stiffness when moving into the deadzone as the warthog? When approaching the gimbal's centre going from up to down or vice versa is murdering me at the moment.
Do they make both left and right hand sticks of this model?
It's interesting that you are using the 10cm extension with it. A comparison of 10cm and 20cm for it would be very nice.
I do mention that the 20cm extension exceeds the GF's ability to produce the amount of resistance I prefer. If you like a lot of dry clutch and light controls then you could probably get away with it with topped out springs.
@@jessecalder thank you

Awesome vid Jesse many thanks 👍🏻 I would be curious to know what your favourite setups are per genre or game even if you don't have all the parts currently available to show
How are you finding the secret labs?
Hey, did you get your virpil stick? I am looking for a stock for small-medium hands, too

@@jessecalder Thanks for your answer! Still hard to decide. I'm waiting for the second version of the Blackbird anyway.
Great review! Is the bottom twist mechanism that connects to the base also made of aluminum, or is it plastic?
Do you think this is better then the wing wing fa18 stick
I’m debating between getting a virpil cm3 throttle, and a gladiator nxt stick, or the gunfighter mkIII ultimate and a cheaper throttle. What do you think would be the better combo to prioritize?
I would choose expensive stick and cheaper throttle. Gunfighter MK3 and Thrustmaster TWCS

@@jessecalder thanks sheep
What did you decide on? I'm in the same boat!
@@funky-sim Have you already received your VIRPIL gear?
Hey W0monty thanks for watching! I am working on getting my hands on an NXT for review.

Imo the Best flight sim experience money can buy for me has been the real simulator fssb with a warthog or cougar . That is precision.
Many like the FSSB but it is not very authentic to much beyond the F16 for those that care about that.
Too short of a throw for anything other than F16 side stick
@@4IN14094 Yes exactly
Awesome review,thanks!!
Thanks for watching Andres!
Great review. Would this be overkill if mainly flying wwii planes?
Thanks Scott! Good gear is never overkill 😎. But in all seriousness I think the Gunfighter base is going to increase your flying enjoyment in any sim/aircraft. The grip choice you could consider going with is the KG12 pairing (a ww2 grip). Cheers!
The Cobra M5 used to be around 50$.
I love the new sticks but too bad they have moved all of the prices way up.
And the Cobra used to breach the gap between low end and top of the line, but now it's gone.
I agree completely. Keep a lookout for my next video as it relates a lot to that topic!
Pretty sure you can run whatever combo you want on pc.
Does it have the twist for rudders in Dcs?
Can you use these with the virpil z extensions
What throttle would go well with this?
Where did you find it for $275?
Yoooo, another stick review... LESS GO
Wish they'd make a left handed version
Is this Force feedback??
i am very interested in this base, because i think it would be a excellent choice for an omnidirectional throttle.
Would it be hard to replace that yourself?
so VKB or Virpil? need help making a choice
Personally i'd go with VKB if you're in the US just because you'll get it much quicker. If you don't like it, you can easily sell it for near full price while you're waiting for your Virpil product.
How does the Stronghold mount compare to the Monstertech?
Simpler but much more 'space" vs the monstertech
@@TimCampbell76 Thanks!
It’s a very real company with very real products. If you think there might be a problem with your order I’d get in touch with customer support.
Man I want one
