Such a good vid. As a recovering bassist I struggled for a good while to figure out how to get my guitar to sound good in the mix. Because by myself I sounded nice and warm and round but it wouldn’t work in the group. It was frustrating but I finally figured out I needed to get out of the mud and use some mids/highs to cut more. Awesome job!
Just what I was looking for! Thanks for this video - I just bought a looper and tried playing to what I recorded and realized duh, I need something to get me to stand out quick! But I did not know where to take the sound - what to try and what to listen for. This was so helpful.
Hi Shawn ! I love D-20 tons ! It's my dream amp ! I tested it in my home studio and I understand the concept "one amp any sound"! I played hard my Gibson Sg-Z 1998 so I obtain all the tones I needed from smooth jazz to heavy fusion lead, passing every tone in the beetween! I drive all the sounds with G4 ( Red Channel on Generator 120w MK II) ! Simply awesome !
Thanks for another excellent video!!! This just taught me how to get a much better lead sound. I've been struggling with being too ice pick sounding for too long. It also confirmed the value of purchasing, and using a looper from a time savings and learning curve standpoint. Just purchased this pedal from Sweetwater while listening to your video. It had 5 stars out of 40 something replies. I hope that someday the manufacturers could find a way for the consumer to name the videos that clinched the deal when they make a purchase. They should be required to compensate people like you that do the videos. There are a handful of people like you that I can count on for an unbiased review every time. In my opinion, you guys are their best sales tool.
hey Shawn ,funny how you rock the knobs a few millimetres trying to find the perfect tone when with your level of playing you could be playing through a can of baked beens and it would still sound killer.
I thought the mid boost sounded the best to my ears. I confess, my amp has the mids boosted 90%, bass at 60% highs at 20%. But this is my live sound. Haven't tracked for years, so, I'm sure my tone/eq would change to fit the mix for what was needed. Have fun with all the options!
Wow. I wish I sucked like that!! LOL. On the tone, I though that really mid pushed was the bizness, then, when you dialed it back to where you had it: it was just as there in the track, but had such a clarity and definition - and just did not compete at all. Truly sat in the mix perfectly. Good show.
i'll take your 'sloppy' chops any day Shawn - good trackin' - lookin forward to hearing your latest album - finally discovered it in iTunes. Wished I'd known sooner :)
That McCarty… Sigh Whatever sloppiness you're playing, I'd like to achieve when I play well :)) maybe I should lookup the sky like in your video to get the inspiration ?
Boy the small increments used on the pedal are noticeable, I like that G-3 Revv will pick one up for sure, although I will be rocking with a Fender Stratocaster single coil guitar, be sound nice :-) Yeah, I totally understand where you're coming from, with dialing in a solo. That all comes with having experience... Great stuff, thx!!!
tweek as needed bedroom tone settings, bass at 80% mid 40% treble 45% live tone settings, bass 40% mid 60% treble 55% noodlein tone every thing at 50% :) and all into a clean amp running a 412sealed and a 212 open back :) REVV FOR LIFE!
Very nice playing (Schecter?).I just ordered the Revv 3 with 9V power supply.By the way how do get the nice sounding video with audio? I recently bought a Zoom 4k video recorder and the Zoom mic earlier.
I've been wanting to like the D20 more.. but some of the demo videos I've seen and heard have left me feeling underwhelmed.. except for yours Shawn.. you are a tone dialer extraordinaire.. and that clean tone at 0:50 sounded better than most I've heard.. so the G3 (which I own) sounds really good too.. thanks! I'm feeling like I the D20 could be in my future.
Bobby Lane Just goes to show that some people can make anything sound good and some can make anything sound bad. Thank goodness for Shawn and Pete Thorn who show what the gear CAN do if run properly.
Shawn, I've been a strat player my entire career and I'm looking to get a PRS and I'm deciding between a McCarty and DGT. I see you play both. Which one would you say is more Les Paulish in terms of tone?
Hey Shawn, how did you set up the signal chain? When I hook up my g4 into the preamp of my D20 it creates a sound that makes my ears feel uncomfortable. Not that it sounds particularly bad but it literally kinda hurts. I can only use the g4 as a pre amp to the effects loop. However in the video I can see that you plugged in something to the D20's front.
My focus as a session musician is to always get the tone as close to proper within the parameters of the track I'm working on, so the mix engineer isn't forced to make major changes.
you turned the mids up too much on that one take, but they would have been perfect at noon, with the treble from the last take, which was a little more. where you had the mids at the end, it sat back a little too far in the mix.
...I use a trick when playing lead live...I don’t boast the volume too much or push mids...A lower volume makes your audience lean in more...you will get heard...🎸🤠✌🏻
I Don't understand, what's the sound of amplifier why didn't you show that, pedal is ok, but u have to use the drive from amplifier and then if needed turn some boost for solo.. That's the whole point. These days gitarists cannot live without any pedal 🤔
After hearing 95% of other channels on the REVV G3 have horrible, horrible tone, it was nice to hear someone who actually does have good tone. Thanks.
Rabea Massad has killer tone out of the Revv g3
Thank you - I'll check that guy out. I have since my last post purchased both the G3 and G2. My drive pedal concerns have been resolved. Great pedals!
Oh yeah, he's one of the guys who has great tone.
@@professorstein5855 Nice shopping ;) I want them like crazy, but right now I couldn't buy me a set of strings haha

Thanks for watching! The D-20 is one of my favorites!
I bought that pedal after watching this video. Great playing and important content. Congrats Shawn! 👏🏼
PRS guitar looks and sounds amazing. Never seen one without the bird inlays. Loved the fusion licks.
Is that a McCarty model?
"Sorry I'm playing kinda sloppy". Proceeds to rip another killer solo
Ian Kwan He always says that. He is the most self effacing insane guitarist on UA-cam. Shawn is the best.👍🏻
Lol for real, this dude is killing it 😂

Awesome tutorial, please have more!
Very practical and informative!
Love it!

it sounds great 👍 a unique musician that has simplicity and great performance , more power to you man

I really liked your playing. Kudos!
Great video! Thank you for experimenting with the same backing tracks. It creates an excellent reference point for solos...

Everytime I watch Shawn Tubbs I´m amazed of the level of awesomeness in his choice of tones.
i'll take your 'sloppy' chops any day Shawn - good trackin' - lookin forward to hearing your latest album - finally discovered it in iTunes. Wished I'd known sooner :)
Thanks so much for the kind words!
awesome playing!
When he says “little bit” he ain’t kidding 😂
amazing player..we are heading towards a marshall lead tone basically?
Shawn you are such an amazing player ! Wow!
You're very kind! Thanks so much!
Nice tones! And guitar especially!
Excellent insights and demonstration of the @RevvAmps G3 @shawntubbs This was a clincher video for me. Ordered. 🎉 cheers.
That McCarty… Sigh
Whatever sloppiness you're playing, I'd like to achieve when I play well :)) maybe I should lookup the sky like in your video to get the inspiration ?
Thanks Shawn. Great info!
Thanks for watching Craig!
Super helpful Shawn- many thanks! More like this please!!
Thanks Steve!!
Great video Shawn...Nice playing too!👍
Thanks Tim!
Sweet Hair - check, Sweet Axe - check, Sweet tones - check, Great notes - check, Michael cries.
Haha! Whatever man..You do great work, Michael!
At least you guys have hair!
What strikes me is the micro adjustments you're making to settings, rather than big sweeping changes.

Thanks for this very informative video. I learned a lot today.

Yes to many people use far to much gain. Even like older style rock bands .ACDC they really didn't use much gain
Thank you for the excellent information..it was really helpful.
Great video,, helping alot
7:30 my fave setting.
I dont play metal at all, but I could definitely use the settings in the video for some Journey solos and other similar styles.
I love rock guitars!
Wow! great playing and tone. Like a public service announcement for electric guitarists.
Hi Shawn . I have a question? Which amp is better to pair with line 6 helix Hughes and Kettner GrandMeister or Revv generator 7/40 ?
NICE TONE!
Very Good Playing :-)
Nice video and well explained...

DGT

The only mistake I've noticed from most players using the G series pedals, is they run them with too much output or volume to the front of an amp.
thats some tasty licks, what scale is used here?
Unbelievable pedal!!!
I'm wondering how close the tone was on the recording in comparison with the real tone?
Been thinking about trying a PRS, love my LP, but also looking for another feel
Thanks for tweak show. That gave me some ideas on soundscaping. Much appreciated!
Revv is soooo great :)
So you don't need a lot of gain for soloing tone I mean metal soloing?
I have this pedal it disappears in love situations and and does not like to be boosted. Its does sound get by itself!
Is this a 594?
I wonder how pedal would sound on a bassbeeaker Fender amp.
Great phrasing
Thanks John!
Wouldn't it be better to run the record signal through a mic/di/eq pre? Most pedal and amp eq's are not surgical, to me.
My focus as a session musician is to always get the tone as close to proper within the parameters of the track I'm working on, so the mix engineer isn't forced to make major changes.
Bruh, where you get your sweet T Shirts?

It sounds like he's dialing a tone from Is there love in space
...I use a trick when playing lead live...I don’t boast the volume too much or push mids...A lower volume makes your audience lean in more...you will get heard...🎸🤠✌🏻
Les Lane .....right
6:33 more mid centric/ gain 🤘🤘🏻🤘
Kim Mitchell approves this track
Great practical tips, really useful. And oh, that sloppy playing was just unbearable ;)
guitar sounds awesome, voice quality is :|
Step one- get a PRS
Shawn doesn’t even need to look at the fretboard anymore 😅
What’s the fretboard?
Who gives a damm about the gear if you are at the helm LOL. Such a player you are brotherd.
Chord progression please? (Basically I need that C augmented I guess?)
You're on the right track. It's C9.
I Don't understand, what's the sound of amplifier why didn't you show that, pedal is ok, but u have to use the drive from amplifier and then if needed turn some boost for solo.. That's the whole point. These days gitarists cannot live without any pedal 🤔
Check out Shawn's channel or more of our videos - there's a lot of amp-only examples. :)
Man... Shawn has big ears, sheesh.... but not physically... He's quite proportional...
"Weird"
Super beefy ... Not too "toppy" haha
Can I play this video before I work with every single musician? Before I even introduce myself? Just so they know where I'm coming from?
