XTS built me a board centered around the HX effects. all my analog drives are in the loops of the hx and the hx provides the switching and the effects. To avoid volume pedal issues i just use a mission expression pedal to control the volume inside the hx. Works great! Hope you have fun putting everything together!

Dude you need to check out the Lehle volume pedal. I used to use EB volume pedals and they never lasted more than a year, either the cord or pot or something went bust. I switched to Lehle a few years ago when they came out and I couldn't be happier. No pots or cords to wear out, no lost high end and you can use it as a line driver with the 10db gain pot. You wont regret buying one!

People will disagree, especially when throwing this in with higher-end pedals, but I think the Rat is a great high gain pedal when dialed in correctly. I stack mine with a Tumnus behind it and it sounds great. I also use a .45 for everything in between.
Another pedal to note.. the Greer Lightspeed. I've been playing around with it for the past couple of days and am torn between that and the Tumnus. They both sound amazing, but are different beasts on the EQ spectrum. Overall I think the Tumnus stacks better with other pedals, but the Lightspeed just has that nice amp-like breakup that sounds/feels amazing.

    • @ShawnTubbs

Nothing at all wrong with the RAT for gain. They sound great but I'm not as into them for my sound. The Tumnus is good but I still prefer my silver Archer. Haven't tried the Lighspeed.

@@keoni927 The Lightspeed has been on my board for almost two years now. I've gone back and forth with other overdrive pedals but I keep coming back to the LS. It sounds amazing when stacked with a Klon. The original Centaur is way too expensive, so I bought the RYRA Klone which is absolutely cracking. At the moment it sits in front of the LS to kick it for creamy lead sounds with a mid focus but it sounds very good behind the LS as well, just in a different way.

Between the GTO and the Dude (for higher gain), the GTO has more low mid thickness, but the Dude might be a bit clearer because it has less content in that part of the spectrum. Would to Dude cut better in a mix because it would stand out more from the bass? I'm sure whatever choice you make, it will have plenty of thought involved (and your ear is great at hearing what sounds good).

The great thing about the Rockett pedals, to me, is that they seem to sound really good through small amps, uninspiring clean amps at lower volumes, as well as larger/louder high-end amps. I think you can fit 6 on a pedal train nano, maybe with a slight overhang, gotta love the top jack. I think I had six once with a one spot daisy chain and it worked fine. They take batteries too so if so when someone nicks your wall watt or you break or forget it you can run on batteries. I’m They’re extremely durable. Also, the nano with six of these doubles as a weapon: if someone tries to steel my guitar and amp I can pop the Nano off of my gig bag and bludgeon them if need be. They sound really good. Can have a lot of different tones in a compact space. Same on the volume pedals, and I’m a mediocre amateur. I break them and some seem to suck tone. I love them and hate them. Looking at running it through the vertex boost thing. The Cali 76 is awesome! I love the 1176’s...so good.

Love this video! It's so fascinating to see, out of all the great pedals you've demo'ed, which ones you choose to use for your own sound. I'm curious about the difference between the Dude and the HRM pedals, since both are Dumble-ish, but you seem to prefer the Dude. I thought the HRM sounded amazing in your demo! But I might be biased by more recent demos that I remember better. Since you obviously like J. Rockett drive pedals, how about the Flex Drive for higher gain? That demo also sounded amazing! (It's one of the videos I show people when I'm explaining that you're my favorite guitarist!) When you build the new board, please do another video.

Im running the Revivaldrive almost last in the chain as an always on pedal with low gain, this gives me the opportunity to switch between fender-ish and marshall sounds and push them with other pedals. This works great with all amps, since the only thing you have to do is adjust the eq on the Revivaldrive according to the amp you're currently using.

Hi Shawn! Thank you for all the great and inspiring videos. You’re doing a fantastic job!
If you haven’t already, you must check out the Greer Lightspeed, made in Athens Georgia. That pedal sounds amazing and sits right into the modern country genre in my opinion. I thought I was done searching for overdrives when I tried out my friends pedal a few weeks ago. It has a very dynamic and “airy” sound and doesn’t get too muddy or compact.
Its more aggressive brother Southland is now next on my “to buy-list” and definitely worth to check out too. It kinda takes over where Lightspeed ends.

This is really useful, thanks Shawn. I’m redoing my board and I’ve been undecided about having my comp first (as I usually do) to putting it after my overdrive as suggested by many, and then there’s the issue of where the sfuzz goes. At the moment I’ve got Comp > tuner > Crybaby>SD1>MojoMojo>BMF Sisyphuzz > Flashbak mini > Marshall Reverb. The fuzz sounds fantastic on its own but I get a huge mid-hump (not a pleasing one) when I stack it with the SD1. It’s good fun experimenting though.

@shawntubbs Im sure this has been said in the comments. A vertex Boost pedal and any volume pedal. The boost is a clean boost but also acts as a volume pedal via expression. Meaning you have control over your volume whether or not the pedal is engaged. And no tone suck because your signal never enters the volume pedal!! Just a thought! Stay well.

I'm actually moving along in the decision process but coming up with the finances is a different story. ;) I've definitely settled on the idea of using a Lehle volume pedal and I'm leaning toward using an Eventide H9, Strymon TimeLine, and a Strymon Flint for verbs, delays, and mod. The Pettyjohn Chime MKII is going on the board for sure and the Rockett Pedals Majestic will most likely end up in the mix. I think I'm going to keep the Suhr Koji Comp as well. Still need to choose at least one more dirt box as well as an Octavia style pedal.

Great video Shawn! For high gain, either the Revv G3 or the XTS Precision Multidrive.. We talked about this recently. I don't use a ton of gain either, so no distortion pedals, but the XTS is as close as I have gotten to a Lukather type tone. One thing I like about the XTS pedals I've tried, is for lead work, they sound fat and killer by themselves, and have no need to be stacked or pushed by another pedal. The Revv G3 is intriguing because it blurs the lines between OD and distortion, but I have not played one. For the volume pedal, the Lehle Mono Volume pedal, hands down. It's active with up to 10db of boost, ridiculously smooth taper, buffered out for the tuner, and dead quiet. Lehle makes top shelf equipment. It's expensive, but you won't regret it. It's worth it. Out of curisotiy, have you ever spent any time with the Wampler Euprhoria? Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I have a Mission volume pedal (the red one). It is active and has a buffer. I absolutely love it. Such a great sound. As for overdrives, I love all the ones I have. The Bogner La Grange has a great Marshall tone with lots of adjustability. My JHS @+ is also a versatile pedal and it allows you to choose between the sound of a 25, 50, or 100 watt amp. I used the OCD for my lower gain neck pick-up blues tones (although it does sound great with my BB pre-amp driving it with my bridge pick-up). Finally, I love my BEOD from Friedman. I have the tight knob turned about 1/3 (10:00ish) of the way up, I have very little gain on it (around 8:00ish) and I have the bass and treble at around 2 with the presence at 9:00. Volume to taste. I mostly use the Bogner and JHS pedals for my overdrive but I use all of them. For my clean sound I either have my BB Pre-amp on or my Carl Martin compressor (love this comp - I also have a 4-knob Keeley which is decent; I would like to try the Cali 76).
I use a Timeline and Flashback II to handle my delay needs, a Blue Sky for the reverb and a Mobius for chorus, phaser, etc. Love the vids, Shawn. Keep 'em coming.

The Thorpey Gunshot does high gain really really well with a lot of tweakability. I have a soft spot for Barber pedals and the Direct Drive is worth a look.I personally am most likely to plug in a Way Huge Geisha which is a pedal that works well through its whole gain range. I love it

(Resp 3 yrs later :/) Shawn, on the volume pedal front, where do you put it in the chain? I’m using a Mission V1 aero and like it. However, it’s designed to work like a volume pot on your guitar, so, ideally, first in the chain. Not all my guitars have the vol pot close by so I like it and prefer the lo-fi impact towards the heel. Two other plusses: 😢1) separate out for the tuner that can be activated (signal redirect, not split) at the toe on the Aero V1;, and 2) color-switching LED at the perimeter at the base so readily know which mode you are in. For your consideration.

Dear Shawn, Cali76, maybe be a JHS AT for higher gain, but definitely not an HX, as it’s proven, that they alter your overall tone, feel and response, why not keep the flint and get an H9? And also try Cioks power supplies, just ask Poul Cioks and let him know, that you know Olivier Vermeersch, that belgian dude and he’ll hook you up.

I highly recommend the Cali76. It's big, heavy and expensive, but it's the last comp you'll buy (IMO). For higher gain, I run a RYRA Klone into a KOT, neither set very gainy. Together, they are wonderful for me.

Revv G2/3 for gain? I was really impressed with both of those and the variety of tones they have. The EB mini volumes are really nice, I also have a Mission volume pedal that’s been indestructible. I’m with you Shawn, I have destroyed a lot of volume pedals but for me I always end up going back to EB.

For the analog octave fuzz sound i'd personally recommend the either the foxrox octron or the mythos argo. They have the clean glitchy octave sound without the fuzz beefiness. If you aren't a fan of fuzz, I'd highly recommend those or a COB style pedal. For your "high gain" pedal I'd honestly recommend using the HX stomp. My reasoning: I use the modeled preamps as a distortion pedal, as opposed to running a overdrive. The upside of that is if I wanted a dual rectifier sound, or a gritty tweed sound I can do all that easily without lugging multiple amps around. Another option: Benson preamp or hudson broadcast.

Hey Shawn great video. Hey if you decide to go with the HX Effects something to think about is the standard power supply that comes with it. There are a couple ways to go to keep your pedalboard uncluttered. I use a Voodoo labs Mondo supply which has the 400ma outputs. I ordered a current doubler cable from Voodoo which supplies the needed current for the HX. It works great. You can also go with other power supplies on the market now which will supply the needed current for the HX Stomp or HX Effects. Just remember if going with a current doubler cable it takes two 400ma outputs.

Only two Volume pedal situations I can stand are to use the Vertex Boost with an expression pedal. However , I just switched to the Mission VM Pro with ultra sweep . Set the internal switch to buffer on, other two options off. I like the Mission as good or better than the Vertex Boost option ! Make sure to get a newer Mission VM pro with "Ultra Sweep " . Though I am not quite the caliber of guitarist as you, I think I am just as picky about my tone ! I bet you will like the VM Pro with Ultra sweep.

Also you can't go wrong with the Cali '76 - a superb piece of engineering, and what makes a point of difference, apart from sounding great, is the 'dry' pot to add the dry guitar signal to the compressed signal. I've had a few compressors, including the Origin Effects Deluxe, and I ended up with the Walrus Audio Deep Six v3 as I found it to be in the nice middle ground between using it as a 'transparent' compressor and as a compressor 'effect'. I like it. They market it as being derived from the 1176 compressor but with the simple interface of a Ross of Dynacomp. Good luck.

Your core tone of the amp/guitar/hands is to die for. The 3 Rockett pedals, it "almost" sounds like you are dialing them in for shades of kind of the same thing. Like that's what your ears want to hear and that how you set the pedals, and I know it's more drastic a difference that what we hear here. You could try adding a syn-1 with say an 800 module for that high gain thing and really if you pair that with say the buxom boost and smash it, you would have 2 more completely different sounds. If you take that 800 module and it hit with the buxom with a lot of boost and roll off a lot of the lows on the pedal, it's a monster sound. Just a thought.

Such an awesome demo of your board. How does the majestic or 45 respond if you push it with a clean boost in front of it? Does it get overdriven madness or does the tone get mushy? Eg goes from ac/dc or zztop into the next level of gain.

In terms of the HX Fx Shawn, I'm a very happy Stomp user. It does everything REALLY well. The effects are really good (got Strymon, Empress and others in the past) and they stand of with those. The only thing I don't like is that it introduces a kind of High frequency (maybe due to ADA conversion) that changes a little bit the fundamental tone. As I said I'm a really happy user and it's something that doesn't bother me a lot, but If you haven't tried it, you should be aware!

I used to have an Ego comp on my board, and I dropped it for the same reason as you did. I thought it sounded sterile. Got an Analog man Mini Bi-comp, which has a lot of character and is really really musical to my ear. It's a double pedal -- Ross on one side, very nice, and a squashier Armstrong on the other.
Man, if you can make an HX sound good, I may well get one! From the demos I watched I don't like them.
Got a Steel String after watching your demo, already had a Vertex volume pedal. Not sure if Mason was working them up or no, but I think it sounds amazing. One day I'll compare it to a stock Boss.

Shawn, I am old school tube amp and analog mostly with the exception of some Strymon pedals. I hate all of the new do everything all in one boards, there must be something to them because they sell a lot or it is the latest fad. Have you ever thought about using a real good Tube PreAmp together with the Line 6 ? It just seems to me like something is missing and tubes are still the ultimate answer. Try your Divided by 13 with a Klon, King Of Tone, Timeline, Flint, Peterson Tuner. TRex has a great small tube reverb pedal that sounds excellent.

    • @ShawnTubbs
      @ShawnTubbs  4 роки тому +3

Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm not interested in any modeling of OD's or Amps in something like an HX, just delays, verbs, and modulation. I owned a Klon for years and ended up selling it, partly because I really needed the money and someone was willing to give me WAY too much for it and also because I was drifting away from that sound a bit. I still have and use my Silver Archer pedal when I want that Klon thing. I had a KOT years ago but I just didn't bond with it though it is a fabulous overdrive.

Shawn Tubbs Thanks for the reply. A good Matchless HC 30 with EL84’s would be a great gift for you if Santa is listening. LOL 😂 I have a bunch of Fulltone pedals, so many I get upset when Mike doesn’t call my name as a winner of his pedal give a way. LOL I have a lot TRex pedals, Timmy, Nobels, ( that seems a little popular in Nashville ) RockBox, Strymon, Ethos, Messa Boogie tube distortion, among others. The thing I have found that never ever changes for me is, every single pedal sounds different with every other amp and guitar, so off I go again on the never ending search. No matter what you chose, you always come up with great sounding tones. Some of the modeling units sound great until they are run through the house live, some of them sound so compressed almost to the point of a AM transistor radio type of sound. That is the best I can describe it, but some people don’t hear it like that. Please post your next find, I love your tone and admire your playing. Thanks. Merry Christmas.
