Thank you SO much for sharing this reality with us! - it's something that rarely gets talked about, but bunnies are ruinously expensive when it comes to vet bills... one of our bunnies went into GI stasis last month, and sadly he also didn't make it, but the amount totaled to over 2,600 euros, and that alone was so demoralizing. :( I have no regrets, but it's important to understand what a financial undertaking bunnies can be! I hope 2023 goes much more smoothly for you, Turbo, and Jelly.
There is no pet insurance for rabbits in Canada, so everything is out of pocket. Some places are charging nearly 800$ for a spay surgery. I took my three to the vet in Dec for check ups and vaccines against RHVD and it was 500$ just for that. 5 min check up and the needles. I spend 168$ a month on JUST LETTUCE. That doesn't include all the other veggies, and I spend 50$ a month on hay. I get small bales from a local place. Never mind litter, toys, treats, etc.
Insurance has helped me a ton!! I definitely recommend to any bunny owner! Wish I could get my hay costs down but my buns are so picky. I get 40 lbs every 9 weeks at $75 so hah is definitely one of my bigger expenses. Thanks so much for sharing and hope this year is a healthier year for turbo!!
Really insightful video! I would recommend insurance for all pet owners but it's difficult for people to know why until health issues pop up. I went through a similar hike in expenses when my dog suffered a spinal injury and also did not make it & it encouraged me to get insurance for my second dog
Just like any animal having one is expensive. I hope that no one thinks just because they are bunnies they aren’t a lot of money. I have quite a few bunnies all free roam. One of them fall into a GI stasis type of situation and unfortunately didn’t make it. The vets did everything they could. My family and I deposited over 5k. Since she died we only ended up paying what was used in her and it only came out to 1.2k. I would’ve spent my last penny if it meant helping her. So I urge anyone who reads this to always have money for the animals they’re buying and always under any circumstances bring they’re pet to the vet hospital if they’re acting unusual.
Very true. Paying for Turbo's bills was so difficult but I'm grateful I was able to do it. There were so many fun things I had planned with that money 🥲 At least Turbo is doing better now 🥰
Love ur videos :) are you planning in doing another one on what you do if you are like out for a night/evening? And what do they do at night? How do you keep them busy or away from making trouble if they are completely free roam? This would help so much for my own decision on getting bunnies 🤍
Whoa, that is indeed a lot of money, but then again, buns are the best pets. By the way, has anyone told you that you have a very good voiceover type of voice? My best wishes for all of you in 2023.
What’s really sad is many of us don’t realize mini lops are prone to so many health issues bc of how they’re bred. Lops are bred with shorter faces than all other breeds. But the mini/dwarf lops are bred with even shorter and shorter faces, which makes them cute but this presents massive problems to the bunnies health. One of the main problems is dental disease brought on my malocclusion due to the shortening of their face. Bc they’re bred with the combination of being short face and a mini/dwarf, they incur a host of serious health issues in the span of their lives and don’t often live very long as a result. The quality of their life lowers drastically when they suffer and are in pain. It’s so unfortunate. Their appearance is desirable but the severe health problems they face are a big challenge. I feel so sorry for them and wish they could all be helped and bred in a way that doesn’t adversely affect their health. I can’t imagine what life is like being in constant pain without remedy 😢
Thanks for sharing and wish Turbo a great year for the year of Rabbit. Could you do a video on rabbit insurance like how you do your research and stuff? Thanks a lot:)
I thought I didn't need it but I should have got it sooner. You're right that he's has a lot of exclusions now but I went ahead and got it anyway because knowing my luck, he might still get something else 🥲
I have 5 rabbits, but it costs so much more...hmm...probably because I change out the litter and hay a lot and waste.. I spend about 100 a wk on organic greens....50wk on paper litter.... 20 wk pine litter which I put under the paper...and about 50wk on hay... about 250wk.. before vet..enrichment and treats. Anyways...point being ...they are not cheap and easy.
No offense to Turbo, but I'm really glad I don't have a Lop now. xD; My mom really likes them so I initially thought about caving and adopting one but I did know they can have ear issues so I opted out. I didn't really know it could be so expensive though! So far my buns haven't had any problems with stasis or health but Thurberi's getting a bit older so I should probably take him in soon anyway. I'm low income so at some point I do need to just bite the bullet and get the expensive checkup to avoid more expense later on if he ends up needing something.
@@BunsBestLife That's a cool idea about the challenges. I definitely try to put aside some money for emergencies, but it's not always a lot right away. I think I can take him in for a big check soon, though! My elderly cat has to get some work done anyway so it's a decent time for a checkup on everyone. It's just a shame the rabbits cost so much more than the cat. They are such popular pets you'd think it'd be easier to get care for them.
My Son Kirby 🐇 and I Say HI to those Beautiful Bunny's. Kirby 🐇 is a Flemish Giant, Free Roaming, and Eating Chewing Machine, 15 lbs of Pure Fun. I spend more Money on Kirby than I do myself. Hay I have to buy online. Half the Toys we buy they will not touch. Always Hungry and Begging for Treats and Pet's. Big Time Chewer. 2 beds, blankets, shoes, clothes, cords, furniture, couch and My hair. I forgot junk mail on the kitchen table. I don't care what I spend on My Son Kirby 🐰. Kirby is the Boss of the House . Best thing I ever did in years. He's My Life. A 73 year old Crazy Bunny Father. 👍😏💝💞💕🥕🥬🐰

I really wish I'd gotten insurance before he got sick but oh well. Lesson learned! Haha what kind of hay do you buns like?

no no one has ever said that! I was always a bit self concious of my voice 😅

Oh wow, it’s lucky these buns are so adorable:( you guys are the best bun parents ❤ May I ask which insurance you went with ?
Petcover! it's about $20 to $25 a month per bunny depending on which plan you choose
Thanks will check it out !
Thanks for sharing and wish Turbo a great year for the year of Rabbit. Could you do a video on rabbit insurance like how you do your research and stuff? Thanks a lot:)
Could you please do a video on picking the insurance? ❤
Can I please ask why you didn’t get pet insurance before? Will anything be covered now?

No offense taken, I totally get it! That's why I picked Jelly as his new friend. Uppy ears and a longer face 🤭
the medical expenses are hard. Maybe you could put aside a bit each week? There are some cool savings challenges online you could look into.
