    Elvis Presley - Summer of 1956. Elvis in concert, Elvis on TV, Elvis at home, Elvis on vacation. This is the next part of my potted history of Elvis - an Elvis biography. This is put together from videos I recorded in 2017 and 2019 visits. This video concentrates on the Elvis in summer of 1956 which was a highly eventful time in Elvis history. In June Elvis caused controversy with his allegedly suggestive performance on the Milton Berle Show before attending Overton Park in Memphis to watch Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. Elvis was on WHBQ, the local Memphis TV station, to promote the Elvis July 4 Russwood Park benefit show and Elvis took June Juanico with him to Houston to pick up a new Cadillac. July would see Elvis in a tuxedo on the Steve Allen Show - with Elvis singing to a dog - appear on Hy Gardner Calling and Elvis recorded Hound Dog and Don't Be Cruel in RCA's New York recording studio. Following that Elvis returned to Memphis by train and relaxed at Elvis Audubon Drive home before the Russwood Park Elvis show on 4th July. After visiting a fan at St Joseph's hospital who was unable to attend the previous night's concert following a road traffic accident en route, Elvis was on vacation. Elvis and June Juanico went down to south Mississippi for a vacation with her family before heading for an Elvis tour of Florida. Also, for one date at the end Elvis was in New Orleans at Municipal Auditorium.
    Sources of information have been gathered since I was 12 years old!! Some (but not all) sources include books by Peter Guralnick, Ernst Jorgensen, Pal Granlund, David English, Erik Lorentzen, Alan Hanson, Paul Richardson and Keith Flynn. Websites include elvisinfonet.com, elvis.com/au, historic-memphis.com, and the fascinating stories and information contributed by so many to the sites, and magazines Elvis The Man and His Music and Essential Elvis. Also the Memphis locations books Elvis - Memphis Style by Mike Freeman and Follow Me To Memphis by Andrew Hearn.

    1956 23 April-6 May - Elvis in Vegas at the New Frontier Hotel for a 2 week engagement .
    Heartbreak Hotel hits number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and first album Elvis Presley hits number 1.
    1 June - Elvis is at Overton Park Shell in Memphis.
    5 June - Elvis on Milton Berle Show singing 'Hound Dog'
    Elvis's performance is criticised by all of the media outlets as being obscene.
    12 June - On this day Elvis and June fly to Houston where Elvis picks up his new Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz.
    After picking up his new Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in Houston, on Saturday 16th of June
    Elvis was at WHBQ-TV studios on the Wink Martindale show to promote the 4 July Russwood park show.
    On Friday 22 June Elvis began a 7 date tour of Georgia and North and South Carolina which was the first tour that the full line-up of The Jordanaires backed Elvis.
    Following the date in Richmond Elvis and the crew, by train, go back to New York and then on July 1st of course sees Elvis on Steve Allen show where Elvis is filmed singing Hound Dog to a basset hound in a tuxedo. And that was followed later in the night, by the Elvis on 'Hy Gardner Calling' show where Elvis answered questions on the telephone to Hy Gardner.
    On the next day, 2 July 1956, Elvis recorded Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel and Anyway You Want Me in RCA New York recording studios.
    At Memphis White Station and there's famous Elvis Alfred Wertheimer photos of Elvis arriving back in Memphis from New York on the 4 July 1956
    Elvis jumped off of course and walked to Audubon Drive. So there is quite a few photos on July 4 taken of Elvis at Audubon house. The next few weeks saw Elvis on vacation in Biloxi.
    3 August - After driving down from Biloxi the day before, Elvis begins a tour of Florida in Miami.
    During the tour Elvis will trade in his newly bought Lincoln Premiere for a Lincoln Continental Mark II
    12 August - Elvis in New Orleans for the last date of the tour the next night....
    Elvis stays in The Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans. Elvis plays New Orleans Municipal Auditorium and he stayed here for the night.
    New Orleans Municipal Auditorium. This was the last day of the Elvis our and that was the last time Elvis played New Orleans
    And after he finished this gig, after a couple of days off, Elvis was in Hollywood. Elvis first film Love Me Tender started production....

    When the media branded Elvis' performance as "Obscene", they didn't know it at the time but that made his ratings skyrocket, all the younger set went crazy over it. lol. On another note, I went to the Burton Theater in Burton, Michigan back in 1956 or 57 when it was released and I'll never forget it. I never seen and heard so many people crying and sobbing towards the end of the show, when Elvis was shot and killed. What a movie.

      Thanks for sharing that memory Bobby. I would have loved to have been around as the songs and films were being released. And yes, music artists down the years that have outraged parents or the general public (whether intentionally or unintentionally) always appeal to the kids 😊. Thanks for watching 👍👍

    I have to tell you, I enjoy your videos and information much, much more than "The Spa Guy", I tried 'talking' with him and telling him of a certain event and he called me a liar, I just politely exited his thread and never went back. He thinks he's all that and a bag of chips. I won't say more but yours is best. Thanks for sharing.

    My FAVORITE of this time is June Juanico's book. Wow. That book made me LOVE ELVIS more then I knew was possible but it made me sad for them both the entire next day.

    • @OceanHops
      @OceanHops  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kelli. Yes I enjoyed that book as well. June really conveys the sense of an almost perfect time away from the spotlight. But yes, the spotlight it seems was always going to come between them. Thanks for watching 👍👍

    Elvis always said 1956 was his most favorite year. He and June stayed in touch for the rest of his life. She gave him a copy of the Prophet and it stayed by his beside until he died. June always wanted a ranch and wanted to call it "Circle J". In 1967, Elvis bought one and name it "Circle G". She told him in 1956 that Unchained Melody was her favorite song. It was the last song he sang. He released an album for her called "Just for you" in 1957.

    • @OceanHops
      @OceanHops  2 роки тому

      Hi Elizabeth-thanks for watching, it is appreciated 👍. Yes, they had a relatively close relationship during 55 and 56. Just want to point out 'Unchained Melody' wasn't the last song he sang and RCA would have chosen the EP title 'Just For You'.

    According 5:54 Elvis was the first rock star to perform in a sports stadium. Therefore, it is not true that the first rock concert in a stadium was by the Beatles in Shea Stadium in 1965. Elvis sang in a stadium 9 years before the Beatles!!!

    • @OceanHops
      @OceanHops  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Rafael👍👍! I think concerts at sports grounds were quite common even in the 50s - in my 1955 vid I go to Ladd Stadium in Mobile where Elvis played. I think the Beatles claim is it was the biggest up to that time. 👍

    Back in the day you would never see elvis on tv cause the colonel wanted 2 much money , and with less exposure ,which is wise

      Hi Gary. I think that Parker was at his marketing best around this time. All those TV appearances in 56, so the nation could see him on their TV at home and wanting more, then cutting TV after the 3rd Sullivan show - so fans then either had to spend on concerts or spend at the cinema to see him. Course this completely back fired in the 60s when Parker went too far and the concerts stopped as well. Thanks for watching 👍
