    “Is there a reason they brought young Rhaenyra back?”
    Because that’s how Daemon sees her. A very important part of the last episode was establishing that Daemon doesn’t truly respect Rhaenyra as a woman or as a Queen, merely as a tool for his own benefit. And, on a more subconscious level, as an extension of Viserys. Daemon sees her as a child because he fundamentally views his relationship to her as a relationship to the child of Viserys. Not even taking into account the fact that he was first attracted to the fire and passion she had in her youth, which has largely diminished with age as she has taken on a more mature and responsible outlook on life which is utterly at odds with Daemon who is as unchanged from his youth as the guy going to brothels with his brother.
    In all ways, Daemon’s attraction to Rhaenyra is based upon her youth. It makes absolute sense for him to only see her that way in his mind, and for Harrenhal/Alys/the Weirwood net/whoever to remind him that this is how he sees her, and to make him feel ashamed of that as much as ordering B&C.

    In defence to Criston Cole's strategy, he isnt moving on Harrenhal to capture it from Daemon. He is moving on it because of its central position. As he says, Harrenhal is the key to the Riverlands. He is thinking ahead, like Daemon. Whoever occupies Harrenhal first with their army and/or dragons has the initiative, and can use it to enlist the support of the riverlords.
    Cole can use it to crush what remains of the Blackwoods, link up with the Lannisters coming from the West, and destroy any force coming from the North and Vale. With the Stormlands and Westerlands having already declared for Aegon, and the Reach (Ik abt the books, but from their POV) likely to follow suit thanks to the Hightowers, them controlling the Riverlands effectively will bottle up the Blacks. Rhaenyra's allies in the Starks and Arryns will be stuck at Moat Cailin and the Bloody Gate, unable to spill over into the Riverlands and threaten King's Landing by land.
    Both Cole and Daemon have their head on straight when it comes to strategy. Its just that Daemon has a Dragon, and can move to Harrenhal much faster. Hence he gets there first. Both Cole and Daemon are being proactive, not reactive. Both see the Riverlands as the centre of the war, and want to control it and initiative. Whoever owns Harrenhal has the other side on the back foot at this stage.

    I think the Greens’ logic towards Harrenhal is justified. It’s pretty clear that Larys values Harrenhal as much as Littlefinger does, that is to say, he views it only as a means to an end. He likely never went back after he first came to court with his father, and had no desire to return either. So when he assumed the title of Lord, he had no reason to care about who was running the castle on a day to day basis and left his father’s castellan in charge, probably also helped by the fact that Simon seems to be a liked and respected figure so replacing him means you have to replace his supporters in the household, which is a headache Larys doesn’t want to deal with when he wants to remain in the capital. So he chose to leave Harrenhal in the hands of an uncle who didn’t much care for him but the council is now also realising that this means Harrenhal isn’t a loyal castle and should be treated with the same suspicion as any currently undeclared House.
    I suppose you could say Larys should have anticipated Harrenhal would be a key battleground in the war and he should have installed a loyalist household and garrison at some point just to make it harder to take, but I think his preoccupation in King’s Landing justifies his leaving the castle effectively to be easily taken as soon as someone else comes along.
    This is of course also operating under the assumption that Larys wants to help the Greens. Cos for all we know, leaving Harrenhal open with a disloyal household could have been part of his plan to give the Blacks an easy advantage early on in the war, you just never know with this guy. 😂

      @notsorry4735 3 дні тому +11

      The Dondarrions are from the Dornish Marches, one of the only places in Westeros that had to regularly engage with Dornish forces. Out of all the houses that would be okay with a Dornishman even working in their castle, let alone being the steward, the Dondarrions are amongst those at the bottom of the list.
      Just think about it, you're suggesting a Dornishman who betrayed his own kind was raised into nobility and made into the stewards of a house that hates Dorne? Not only that but Criston is on multiple occasions noted as visibly Dornish by multiple people concluding that he wasn't even Stony Dornish but either Sandy/Salty Dornish.
      Let's just be honest here, the writers read Dornish marches and assumed that meant brown/tan people because they're laymen who get basic lore factoids wrong.
      - Cregan's father became lord years after Queen Alyssane died so he couldn't have shown her the wall
      - Ryan Condal an interview recently claimed Aegon the Conqueror lived in Old Valyria...

      I really don’t understand why this is supposed to be such an issue. The Hightowers are the equivalent of WASPy elites who can’t grasp that Hispanics can be American citizens so assume they’re all Mexican, to give an American equivalent but this is simply what you find in every border region all over the world. Of course there’s going to be coupling - as Otto would say - and people born on either side who don’t “look” like they’re from one side but are raised in that culture anyway. It’s not a mistake on the show’s part, and it’s really not hard to grasp either.

    • @Longshanks1690
      @Longshanks1690 3 дні тому +11

      I really don’t understand what the issue is here. Alicent and Gwayne are obviously supposed to be shown in the wrong for looking down on him for being outwardly Dornish when he’s as competent as any Southron knight, it’s the equivalent of a privileged WASP assuming all Hispanics are Mexicans, even if they were born in the US.
      They’re obviously going out of their way to show Criston is out of place both as a commoner and someone of “mixed” ancestry, which you’d think Preston would normally be all about, but he thinks it’s a mistake they’re “doubling down on” so he’s focusing on that rather than appreciating what they’re doing with his character in the dynamic he’s been put in.

      We can clearly tell what silly mistake led to this scene, the writers don't know the world building and assumed Dornish Marches meant Criston was visibly brown and the retcon to make him common born has no real effect on the character or the story.
      Rhaenyra was still not going to choose a highborn from a minor house over the throne. It doesn't effect how he's treated in KL, it was never mentioned during the scene where Rhaenyra picked him for the Kingsguard, it was never mentioned when Criston wanted to run away with her, the only person who ever mentions it is Gwayne which is remarkable when you think about it. If this was a well thought out intentional change they had many opportunities to use it to comment on the difference in how the common born are treated but they didn't.
      The only implication that he is Dornish apart from his skin tone was when he mentioned that as a knight of the Stormlands he has intimate knowledge of Sunspear...which doesn't even make sense, he should've mentioned that he has this knowledge from his childhood or as a Dornishman unless the implication is that he fought there which is unrealistic and contradicts his supposed Dornish roots.
      It's okay to admit the writers made a silly mistake, you don't have to defend everything they do

    • @Longshanks1690
      @Longshanks1690 2 дні тому +3

      @@notsorry4735 Yes, because it’s absolutely impossible for someone to be ethnically of one side of a conflict yet be raised in the culture of another when one of their parents falls in love with a person from the other. Can you find a single example in all of history where this has happened? A single instance where there were children born of mixed heritages? I think not. No, you draw a line on a map and everyone stays firmly on either side of it with no movement whatsoever. That’s definitely how humans work.
      It is just flat out wrong to say that HOTD’s showrunners don’t know the world building. There are so many subtle references to the books all throughout the show that only other book fans would appreciate, for no reason other than to show their love of this world. Now, maybe they made a mistake - they didn’t - but it’s just smugness to claim they don’t know the lore when they clearly do.
      What are you talking about? Criston being lower born is *the* most important thing about his character. It’s what forms his initial loyalty to Rhaenyra because of how indebted to her he feels. As he explicitly tells her, she gave him an honour no Cole had ever had before and he feels tremendous loyalty to her because of it. And when he realises that he’s betrayed his oath for her, it’s devastating because he feels he’s destroyed the only thing of value in his life for nothing. He can’t take any pride in his cloak anymore because he feels it’s the only thing in his life worth anything, he doesn’t have a grand heritage to fall back on like everyone else in the story. Criston coming from nothing and rising to be one of the seven kingsguard is so formative to his character that I don’t see how you could possibly have missed it.
      Of course it was mentioned. Otto tells Rhaenyra she has to pick one of his candidates and that it would be politically disadvantageous if she picked a nobody like Criston Cole. She explicitly picks him in that scene because of his merit and not his name - and also because it’s what will make Viserys pay attention to her but I digress - so how was it never brought up? It’s only mentioned by Gwayne because it’s so formational to their relationship in a way that it wasn’t to Rhaenyra or Alicent because they didn’t care about his background but Gwayne clearly very much does.
      He never said that he had intimate knowledge of Sunspear, I have no idea where you got that from. He said he was knighted burning two Dornish watchtowers in the Boneway, that’s all we know about his background fighting in Dorne, and it makes perfect sense for that to be how he got knighted.
      Again, you keep acting like Criston must be culturally as well as ethnically Dornish when the Hightowers’ comments are clearly only about the latter. He was of a Dornish background but he was raised in the Stormlands, very much like someone of a Hispanic background will be culturally American if they grow up in the US, which you treat as an impossibility for some reason.
      I don’t defend everything they do, I defend the show from perceived faults which don’t actually exist by people who don’t understand what the show is actually saying and seem intent on creating problems where none exist.

      His strategy is to keep Robb in one place to give Steffon Lannister the time to raise another army at Casterly Rock, March across the Golden Tooth, bolster Tywin in the Riverlands, march on Riverrun, drive Robb back across the Neck then turn their attention back towards King’s Landing hopefully in time before Stannis can raise a force to march on King’s Landing in his unguarded rear.

To assist in this objective, he sent Clegane to raid the Riverland farms and villages loyal to the Tullys and Starks so that Robb would be forced to spend resources guarding them as well as crippling his supplies, weakening the morale of his Rivermen and forcing him to stay in one place coordinating a response to these raids.
      This would give Steffon Lannister the time to raise another army at Casterly Rock, march across the Golden Tooth, bolster Tywin’s forces and allow him to overwhelm Robb with a march on Riverrun to force him back across the Neck before turning back south to either confront Stannis’ building army or prevent him from building one in the first place, thus securing the throne for Joffrey by removing all his enemies from the realm.
      All things considered, it’s actually a pretty solid and genius plan that was successful in keeping Robb north of Harrenhal… it’s just that Tywin didn’t anticipate Robb crossing the Golden Tooth, routing Steffon’s army, raiding the Westerlands and Renly also declaring himself King in the south. The „Criston Dornish“ Plot is somewhat strange because they sometimes also say he is from the Stormlands. To me it would make sense if his parents were from Dorne and when his father was made steward by the Dondarrions the minor house Cole was founded in the stomlands.
    Lot of confusion could have been avoided if they just had said Criston looks Dornish.

    • @simonholmes841
      @simonholmes841 3 дні тому

      Yeah, but they're supposed to work "only after battles." Which might have worked this episode, depending on how close they have to be to the bloodshed. And if anyone's going to know about or have access to glass candles, it'll be a Hightower and a dragonlord on Dragonstone. OK, I'm on board.
      So the real issue would be that it establishes a way to communicate over long distances, so the show would have to take it back off the table pretty fast, which would probably feel contrived. It would still be super cool though.

    Yeah, it didn't make any sense that the Greens wanted to 'take' Harrenhal. I noticed that watching the episode. There's no reason they should think that Larys' seat is against them. Makes no sense. Maybe the Greens had access to the script for the episode and thus realized Simon was against them? 😂
    Oh, and I guess MAYBE Ser Criston's mother was a Dornish peasant woman or something? Just to head canon the show's mistake? 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @everhall306
      @everhall306 3 дні тому +3

      Yes there is. Even without Daemon in the Riverlands, the only way for Black forces to get to KL from the Vale and the North is through the Riverlands. Holding Harrenhal with a strong force means houses in the region will be more likely to side with Aegon, and the Vale and Northern forces can be blocked. Criston is being proactive.

    • @Longshanks1690

      Larys knows his great-uncle well enough to know he can’t be relied on to hold the castle for long in his name, and he’s been too preoccupied with his duties in King’s Landing to do a full replacement of the castle’s garrison and staff. It makes perfect sense he would inform the council that Harrenhal can’t be relied on.
      That’s not a headcanon, that’s just canon. The obvious implication is that he’s of mixed ancestry which is why the famously anti-Dornish Hightowers don’t approve of him at first. There’s no “mistake” here at all.

    • @jacebales2951
      @jacebales2951 3 дні тому

      @@Longshanks1690 I agree that it could definitely make sense that Cole is half Dornish. I don't dispute that at all. I think that Preston is right though that they did initially make a mistake in Season 1. It just happened to be a mistake that could easily be explained.

    • @everhall306
      @everhall306 3 дні тому +1

      @@jacebales2951 I don’t think it was a mistake. Cole is still appears ethnically Dornish, which is what Alicent notes in ep 1. In ep 2 he clearly lays out how he got his knighthood fighting AGAINST Dornish incursions in the Marches

    I have a question that confuses tf out of me so can somebody please explain why is Rhaenyra even fighting this war?
    Last season it was pretty obvious that she doesn't want the throne and then she even admitted it.
    in episode 10 it looked like she's gonna go full on mad queen because of Luke. Made sense.
    But
    This season she didn't do it.
    She only wanted Aemond. No war. Just him.
    And yet she still wants to fight this war... WHY??? To get Aemond? But she doesn't even talk about it. She mentioned him once and miraculously she seems to have calmed down about Luke already. She's pretty much back to her old self again.
    Does she want the throne now? Why?
    Is it the prophesy thing? Just give it to Aegon. Vissy never told Rhaenyra that he thinks she's Azor Ahai. he only said it has to be a Targeryen and Aegon is a Targeryen! And she doesn't even know he's a bad dude! All the bad stuff he did was relatively secretive. Except for the rat catchers which she doesn't seem to know yet
    I'm not saying she should do it I just don't get why doesn't she?
    She doesn't want the throne
    She doesn't want to kill
    She only wanted Aemond
    then why tf does she want to fight?
    She can easily give it up and live a life she actually wanted.
    It's not just some minor plot hole the main character has no motivation
    And a little side note. When Alicent says "iT's ToO LaTe" it's such a lie. The Jaeherys thing as cruel as it was it was also indeed a son for a son. it's f*cked up but fair. It cannot be too late because of that
