Think you misunderstood the high Valyrian conversation in the small council. It wasn’t to hide the conversation, it was to expose Aegon as incompetent.

    • @SomethingImpromptu
      @SomethingImpromptu 14 днів тому +3

Yeah, it was to humiliate him, to demonstrate that Aemond has all the competencies that are expected of a Valyrian, Targaryen king, whereas Aegon has none of them, including this embodiment of their connection to their cultural heritage. I mean, in fairness, most of the council members did look completely oblivious to the contents of the High Valyrian- & yet they were still obviously able to glean Aemond’s implication from the fact that Aegon stumbled to even form a sentence in response (you can pick up on that much whether you speak the language in question or not).
Also, speaking Latin may have been an important skill for educated Christians in the Medieval period, for obvious reasons… But it’s not like ALL educated people in all of Europe, regardless of their heritage & religious background & so on, ALL were required to learn Latin in perpetuity… It’s really only a pretty narrow set of cultures (associated with the Catholic Church) during a very specific historical window where that was a NECESSITY for educated people, mostly so they could study the Bible… There’s an analogy there, in that High Valyrian is an important, relevant semi-dead language in Westeros, & it’s certainly expected of Targaryen royalty, but I don’t think it’s ABSURD to think that some Lannister, or other figures with no personal connection to Valyria, might not have studied it the way Aemond Targaryen or someone in that kind of position would’ve…
I think it’s an open question whether Maester Orwyle actually understood the specifics or not. He didn’t make much of an expression of recognition, but we also saw him duck & weave away from involvement in Targaryen drama in the same episode when Alicent asked him whether Viserys ever told him that he wanted Aegon on the throne; you’d think that would be a reasonable conversation for a sick Targaryen king to have with the maester on his own small council at some point, but he clearly wants no part in the court intrigue, doesn’t want his personal testimony to end up putting his life at risk, depending on how this civil war turns out… So I can certainly see him not wanting to get on either Aegon OR Aemond’s bad side by reacting to that either way. Now, if all the Velaryons & Targaryens on the Black council acted like they couldn’t understand High Valyrian, that would be weirder to me… But why should probable Andal-descendants like Jasper Wylde or whoever speak Valyrian?
I could imagine Larys learning it, just because he is (a) the kind of weird intellectual who seeks power through the attainment of knowledge, (b) understanding the language of the royal family could be a very valuable asset- he surely wouldn’t want to MISS a crucial secret during his spying just because someone spoke it in High Valyrian… And (c) he’s pretty clearly tied up with some weird magickal shit, between the “Rat King” stuff, & the fact that his seat is overgrown with Weirwoods that cause Daemon to have visions, & his connection to Alys Rivers… Given all these connections to the Old Gods & his possible warging ability & his… What, possible half-sister(?) giving Daemon a potion that may very well contain Weirwood paste, & his desire for knowledge which reminds me of Rhaegar & the like, he seems to be implied to be into all of that mysterious magickal stuff enough that it wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out that he has studied anything from prophecies & Targaryen/Valyrian historical magickal events (in which case being able to read/speak High Valyrian would probably be invaluable) to the First Men/Children/Old Gods worship, perhaps even some of the “Ice & Fire” stuff that ties them together in one polarity…
So on a personal level, maybe he would understand… But even the rest of House Strong- it’s like… Why would some middling Riverlander nobles/knights learn High Valyrian? The main thing that ties most of these houses, & even their liege lords, to Valyrian culture is literally just that Aegon the Conquerer conquered them. But it’s not like he forced everyone to learn the language…
So yeah, just because there’s this general, loose analogy to real-world Latin in the Medieval Catholic world, that doesn’t necessarily mean every educated person should have troubled themselves with learning this whole largely dead language… To what end? Unless they’re super into Valyrian history or prophecy, it seems like trying to kiss up to (or spy on) Targaryen royals would be the main benefit, & many houses just wouldn’t have a strong motivation to do so. Maesters who devoted their lives to study of ancient texts & shit would be one thing. But nah, not surprised that Tyland Lannister wouldn’t know High Valyrian.

Plus in this same episode Daemon literally sees himself as Aemond in Harranhal and him "being resentful of his older brother denying him his birthright" has been a thing every single episode this season so far, like literally within the first ten minutes of the episode we have the theme of "killing your older liege so you can rule better" come up.
Aemond wants to be king, his brother hands this conniving psycho the perfect plausible deniability to off his brother, become king, and be called a hero for it. Rhaenys behaviour is so weird because they completely changed the intent and setting of the dragon fight and kept her motivation and intention the same for the most part. In F&B I read it as when Rhaenys comes to defend Rooks Rest she is ambushed by Aegon and Aemond and then in a moment of realization that there's no escape she decides to go full in and kill Aegon and try to end the war there in her mind which would call back to the goofy dragonpit scene from S1 where she didn't act but time she does. But in the episode she gets to 1v1 Sunfyre with her bigger dragon and its really odd because she just kinda wins. Then Aemond "kills" him and after Sunfyre goes down and Rhaenys and Meleys are Ok in a very strange turn of events she doesn't just fuck off at that moment especially because Meleys is probably faster than Vhagar instead then they continue with Book Rhaenys doing a suicide move to try and kill Aemond this time but its kinda silly because she tries to kill Vhagar and that does not work. Lastly after it fails and she only rakes Vhagar a little then she gives up on the suicide mission calls it quits to go home but its to late and she gets ambushed a second time by Vhagar.

She used gravity and Meleys speed to spin Vhagar in circles until they reached ultimate velocity which is when she body slammed Vhagar into the ground.
She flew over the trees and took the time to check in on Meleys who was badly burnt and had a broken leg. By the time she was done with seeing how Meleys was she couldn’t find Vhagar’s remains on the battlefield. She looked up at the sky as most dragons like use the sun as a blind spot to attack from.
Unfortunately Aemond knew she would eventually retreat home is she couldn’t find him. So he flew Vhagar under the cliff as she’d need to pass over it to get home. Once you’re in Vhagar jaws you ain’t getting out.

I don't think there was an Aemond character switch at all.
It wasn't over the incident at the brothel. We also see Aegon bullying Aemond with the pig back in season 1. Granted, those are the only two incidents we see of Aegon bullying Aemond but we hear of him being bullied over not having a dragon more often in that same episode. And beyong that, it's clear that Aegon bullying Aemond has been going on for years and years and years. There are plenty of people in the world who have wanted to kill their childhood bullies at one time or another.
And, really, we see highlighted in the brothel incident not only Aegon's lifelong bullying of Aemond, but also how Aemond's machismo comes from this bullying. There is a direct line that can be drawn to his ability to coldly murder Aegon from him being bullied for years.
No, I don't find anything about Aemond's actions particularly inconsistent. Maybe underdeveloped a little bit, I suppose. But not inconsistent or unrealistic.
Although, personally, I would've liked the scene to have been done a bit differently. With Aemond clearly trying to kill Rhaenys but just not caring if Aegon died. Now it seems more like he actively wanted to kill him, and I don't like that as much. Though, granted, it's still ambiguous.

My heart actually broke a bit for Aegon when his mother Alicent told him the best he can do is nothing -- meaning he has nothing to offer, no skill, no intelligence, no perceptiveness, no impulse control. In essence, Alicent said that "everything runs as best and as smoothly as it can when you're not involved AT ALL."
I know Alicent is going through her own "stuff" (much of it of her own making though). Still, I gasped and said, "Holy shit! WTF, Alicent?" There's tough love and then there's just being a biznitch, y'know? At this point, I'm wondering if she's actually a shittier mother than Cersei. Alicent obviously never realized Aegon's emotional needs, the depths of them, and how a simple word (from the one who he should be loved by and trust the most!) can destroy him. At least Cersei saw Joffrey's faults and encouraged his sense of self worth and spoiled him by telling him he can exaggerate (*ahem* LIE) and do as he likes as king.
That would be an interesting video one day: Cersei or Alicent -- who was the worst mother?
Anyway, that said, although I felt for Aegon in that specific moment with Alicent, I recovered. He was still a POS. We've got record low unemployment, record high economy, a few years ago everyone was _certain_ there'd be a recession, yet we achieved the mythical "soft landing", lowering inflation without triggering a recession. If Biden is senile, then clearly that senility is no hindrance.

I don't think Aemond deliberatley burning Aegon was just a vendetta for being laughed at at the brothel. I think the laughing at the brothel was kind of the final drop that made the glas spill. Your big bro always treated you like shit, as a boy and as an adult, all the while being the shittiest person ever. He's not deserving the throne, yet he gets it and is doing a spectacularly terrible job at it. And Aemond is dutiful and all, but he makes a really ugly job at being king, and then Aegon comes to his most vulnerable place and ruins that too, publicly confirming to be just a moron. I think that this is the snapping point. Like "you know what, everyone believes me to be this super evil monster cause I killed Luke, I will be that. I deserve better than being second to this idiot and the realm deserves better than this idiot king." I think, in a way, he is dutiful. Just not to his brother. (Also in the books he is not just the dutiful son all the way, he's quite the ambitious egomaniac)

@@PuddingAtheist Honestly I really doubt it. I'm not the most familiar but it doesn't seem like westeros had heavy integration with valyrian culture, I don't expect there to be many books at all in valyrian and given how long it's been since valyria's fall the citadel would've already translated all the books that did come from there.
Given that, I just don't agree there's much reasons going for the why and the how seems way sketchier.
Why as in, for what purpose, I doubt there's many books outside of the citadel in valyrian, it isn't commonly used on the high council, it doesn't speak like anyone sees it, it isn't used in official documents, it isn't used to communicate, it seems as though nobody aside from targs speak it and finally learning a language isn't a simple commitment so given it seems as though even most noblemen would go significant stretches of their lives without engaging with valyrian, why would they learn it?
How as in, nobody speaks it, so how is it going to be common enough to learn, it isn't useful enough to be used consistently so how are people going to remember it and not enough people know it in the first place to keep it from dying even if in the conquerer's era they did know it.
Just going off of what I remember from the books and the shows. It's def been awhile though.

I think Preston's argument is less about Biden literally not moving in polls, and more that the polls haven't moved _a lot_ specifically in response to the bad debate. I think Preston said that _one_ poll had them equal or not moving. But more importantly, we have to dispense with this "each to their own on political views" mentality. Trump said, live on camera election night 2020, when he was in a temporary lead in the count, that they should stop counting the votes. Then he tried to flip Georgia, and the other states he lost with the fake elector schemes.
Trump literally tried to just _undo_ hundreds of thousands of citizens' votes. That should disqualify him in the eyes of every citizen. I'm not saying we need to shout and screech at the people who think otherwise, but we should firmly explain to them why they're wrong.

@@MarkHogan994 I don't think Daemon wants to do that, especially after seeing him tear up at seeing Rhaenyra metaphorically suffering because of him in last episode's vision. Last time I checked, he hasn't beheaded Rhaenyra after having many such heated exchanges with her. If anything, these visions show his guilt over what he subconciously believes to be him messing up Rhaenyra's life or childhood for his own gain. He lashed out in a dream because the truth hurt.
As for Aemond, I don't see why he wouldn't accept Daemon's challenge in the end. I know Preston sees Aemond and Daemon in the book as "dutiful" but I don't necessarily. They want to prove themselves as the second sons and they do, often. Keep in mind, Aemond is the Prince Regent throughout the entire thing after Rook's Rest. He's in charge. If he's fighting for anyone, it's himself.
In the book, we're left to assume that Daemon challenges Aemond because Rhaenyra has more or less proclaimed him a traitor for not giving up Nettles, while Aemond accepts the challenge because that's who Aemond is. He's prideful and enjoys the challenge. That's my interpretation anyway and I think the show versions line up pretty well with that so far.

She had an opportunity to snuff out all of the usurpers as their treason was occurring and she passed. She may have felt guilty that she had the power to prevent widespread bloodshed and failed. I believe if she could take out Aemon someone who was responsible for killing her supposed grandson and wound or kill Vaghar would lessen the bloodshed.
It becomes like a question Tywin Lannister asks Tyrion to "explain why it's more noble to kill 10,000 men in battle than a dozen at dinner". I think how Aemon survives is because Sunfyre landed on her feet like a cat; she did like a flying backstroke to give her time to flip right before she disappeared below the tree line. So he wasn't smushed like the Queen WNW RIP 😢 but is still prolly wrecked beyond all reason; also, he does have the endurance stats of Vizzy T. I don’t think Aemond turned into a kin slayer because of the brothel comment. It was a slow burn. He thinks he should be on the throne instead, his brother didn’t even want it and doesn’t care that much about their history and culture. Aemond has been bullied for most of his life and not even getting Vhaeghar changed that. I also don’t think it’s something that the history books would have registered.

  • @TheHellyeahmen

I don't think the battle made sense. Not against Vhagar definately. Melys is much faster and Rhaenys is supposed to be "experienced". Why didn't she went higher and attack from above? She could have easily taken out Aemond and Vhagar both.
The worst part is that it makes sense in the book because it's 2 against 1. They changed it and made it dumber.
And I get that they did it for the drama but at least don't call Rhaenys an experienced rider. Just cut out this stupid line and it's fine. But she's cool so she has to be "experienced"

    • @LarthV

Well, they are following the source material here pretty closely tbh. She still could have turned in the book, but did not. @@TheHellyeahmen Imho, it would be far dumber, since Fire and Blood is pretty clear that she _actively_ chose to engage ("...with a crack of her whip and a battlecry..."), whereas she could simply have turned and easily outflown Vhagar, leaving only Sunfyre, who was barely a match. There's rumors that Aemond might be the father of Healanas kids in the book so I wouldn't necessarily say the source material wants you to believe he's 100% dutiful. Also not only didn't Aegon straight up embarrass Aemond in a sensitive moment he's not a good war time king at all, so the show making it appear as though he wants to replace him isn't out of left field. Are we also forgetting that Aegon has been bullying Aemond since they were children in the show. I've got four brothers myself, my youngest brother 100% hates my older brother because he was bullied by him so maybe that's why this isn't shocking to me at all.
