  • Mazzy Star had tragedy and sadness throughout their career. The era that saw success on their journey was their sophomore sensation, "So Tonight That I Might See." Little did you know that this album would produce their iconic hit, "Fade Into You."
It wasn't meant to be a nostalgic anthem. Contrary to popular belief, the dreamy song speaks of heartache and longing for the present moment. The piano and slide guitar weave a tapestry of emotions that was never intended to be a chart-topper. Yet, it soared to platinum heights, selling over a million copies and claiming the number 3 spot on modern rock charts.
As the echoes of their second record faded, Mazzy Star remained in the spotlight. With touring, television appearances, and remarkable film placements like "Batman Forever" and "Stealing Beauty," their music infiltrated the hearts of listeners across generations. Their third album, "Among My Swan," emerged in 1996. The Capitol Records recognized the multifaceted appeal of Mazzy Star - not just confined to teenagers or adults, but a timeless essence that defied boundaries.
Surprisingly, "Among My Swan" found itself mentioned in the most unexpected places, including Martha Stewart Living, of all things. The journey, however, was not without its challenges. Despite its glowing press coverage and innovative promotional strategies, the album's commercial performance fell short of expectations. Amid these twists and turns, Hope Sandoval reportedly expressed her desire to be freed from the confines of their label contract.
The ever-changing landscape of major labels, chasing the formula for massive sales, clashed with the essence of Mazzy Star's artistry. Their hiatus ensued in 1997, leading both Sandoval and Roback towards divergent musical paths. Yet, music never ceased to flow in their veins. As the years slipped by, the duo continued to collaborate, even if releasing music wasn't their primary focus.
The hiatus spanned for almost 13 years. Then, the long-awaited moment arrived. In 2013, Mazzy Star emerged from the shadows with "Seasons of Your Day”, peaking at No. 24 on the UK albums chart and No. 42 on the Billboard album charts in the United States. Yet, fate dealt its hand. In 2016, the band mourned the loss of their drummer Keith Mitchell after his battle with cancer. Amidst these moments, the band released an EP titled "Still," a testament to their unwavering spirit. David Roback remained a driving force, working on projects that celebrated their legacy. However, tragedy struck in 2020, claiming Roback's life due to cancer, leaving a void that could never be filled.

Apparently the lack of massive sales is considered a "sad" tale of this rare band's history whose music still resonates today. Mazzy Star never gave a f**k about commercial success or played the fame game to achieve it like everybody else. They knew the only important thing was the music, everything else was industry bulls**t.
    They were right.
Their music remains timeless & influential.
    ❤🎉😊

The sad tale is the loss of 2 members of Mazzy Star to cancer. Roback was a huge loss for the Alternative scene.

Great insight to a great band! I was lucky enough to see them perform (in the dark) 02/26/2019 one of their last live performances in Los Angeles.

Roeback and the drummer both died of cancer, so that’s pretty sad. I guess Hope is the only surviving member.

Why are there almost no interviews with the singer? There are only 1 or 2, but from the 90s, from these 30 years until now, nothing... is she an introverted person and she doesn't really like talking to journalism?

    • @ericdelucamusic1
      @ericdelucamusic1  4 місяці тому

i would imagine you're spot on... there's very little to almost nothing on here related to interviews. Hopefully she'll do something in the future with an interview but if she hasn't by now I'd say she likes keeping a low profile.

From what I've heard, Hope was terribly shy and hated standing out there in front of a crowd. You can see she closes her eyes a lot and tries to remove herself from the stage while she sang. She just wanted to make music. Such an amazing voice.

Super shy. I saw them a few years ago and there was hardly any light on the stage, could barely see her.

@@ericdelucamusic1 def agreed!!!! Lana is more relatable to me in a way where she opens up about self struggle and relationships. I get the vibe that Mazzt Starr is tha same but more unconventional and complex

I saw Mazzy Star open for The Jesus and Mary Chain in the mid 90's, and I remember she freaked out on the crowd because they were talking while she was trying to sing. It was pretty sad how seriously she took herself, and how she thought berating a crowd who wasn't even there to see her was a good idea. They had a good song, though.
