I just purchased a Q five days ago and I am still in the honeymoon period! I remember how much you loved your Q and I am curious why you elected to sell it? I personally find that 24MP is a "sweet spot" that I do not need to increase. I do understand that hunger for the latest and greatest, but I have chosen to spend some years with this now older model. It is all I need. I do hope you get your issues straightened out to your satisfaction and thank you for another honest review. Sean
Sean Robert Ramuno, trust me, the honeymoon will soon be over. I own over 20 Leica’s , M’s, R’s screw mounts, (my favorites for their purity of form) nd numerous Leica and Panasonic digitalis. If you look at a majority of digital Leica’s you’ll find they are rebadged and grossly overpriced Panasonic’s. Just stating a fact for all of you “Leica Snobs” out there
With my Q2 I find I need to use a higher shutter speed to off set any slight error in my technique will be show with the new high resolution sensor, its not as easy to nail the shot as the Q.
I received my Q2 on 11-13-19 and have had zero problems with it. No dust in the EVF. WiFi issues are causing some people to complain. No Doubt that issue will be addressed in firmware upgrades. Until then, why not download and share your Q2 images the old fashioned way? Problem solved! What does the Q2 offer? The image quality is stunning. Silent leaf shutter. ISO 50,000 capable. Weather sealing. Autofocus. Image stabilization. Macro mode lets you get the front element of the lens as close to your subject as 6.6 inches. And the lens - a phenomenal 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. What's not to like?? The verdict? I love my Q2. It is now my everyday carry go to camera. All things considered, it is IMHO well worth the asking price of $4995 USD. The Q2 is a masterpiece.
The only problem leica have is, I can't stop shooting with it. I have a Q, bought few weeks ago and it is perfect, not any problems on it. Wifi is awesome, the leica app too... The quality are almost the same and awesome too. Leica is a quality brand, the price is worth every penny
Best video I've seen today, for all the reasons you made it in the first place. I hope the issues you cited have been resolved. I'm planning to pick one up as a birthday present to my wife; and I'm loath to getting the Q model because they're only available used, now.
I’ve had the Q2 for about 6 weeks. I love it and the images that come out of it are great but I shoot raw. What about the Q2 images are you disappointed with?
Purchased Q2 Sept 2019; batt charger failed within 2 weeks while on vacation. Visited Leica store Athens and they provided (sold) me with an inexpensive alternative charger for which I was extremely grateful. Returning home to U.S. sent the faulty charger to Leica USA and got a replacement quickly. Excellent service from Leica USA. the Q2 captures beautiful images. Impressed with color and microcontrast rendering and fast focus. Love love love everything about it.
Newer doesn't mean better...Higher MPXL count means more info but also more contrast in the pixel/photo. Sensor shake is a big issue at a low shutter speed.
Love the honesty & transparency about the cons of the camera.. hope they’ll get it fixed ASAP! Absolutely right, especially for that price. Need better developers, & at least their customer service.
As a person that just sold all his high end Sony gear trust me all these camera company apps are awful. Leica Fotos is frankly better designed. Go check out Sony Play Mobile... awful. Bluetooth LE does allow apps to have a constant connection to devices even if app is on background. Sleep monitors, heart rate monitors, GPS trackers etc are allowed if you give them permission. Do you have 3.1 firmware? Did you delete both apps, restart and install only the Fotos app? Good luck.
If only other 'layman' or even professional photographers were less intent on masking the feeble quality control of many manufacturers in the pursuit enhancing their subscriptions (and review commissions), perhaps those manufacturers would pay more attention to their QC before releasing their products; Leica not being alone in this matter. My hat goes off to you sir. It is unlikely I will be pursuing my former interest in this camera.
Hi Ethan. Any news about the issues with the software on the Q2. I am thinking of buying this camera and will be visiting the Leica City Store as you recommended. Could you make any recommendations on the size of Memory Cards and the general speed of the autofocus. Paul Cook They have memory cards at the store and they can sell you the right one. I use a 64GB card but it all depends on your needs. High speed and a good brand. I have had numerous problems with Samsung cards so I would never buy them. Sandisk is best. The Leica cameras are amazing for everyone even an amateur like me or professional photographers.
They did said it has a newer Maestro II CPU, this type of hardware need a lot of coding to make a new CPU work with previous firmware, I'm sure with time they'll be able to port their software.
Good points. I found the Fotos app pretty useless. The minute you connect the remote mode, the Q2 locks out its own control. Now GPS chip is standard for a lot of cameras that are way cheaper, Q2 doesn't have it, and it requires maintaining energy consuming WIFI connection with the phone to send GPS info. I too emailed Leica suggesting BT transmission of GPS coordinates, as many other Q2 users, but not the most requested features are not implemented in the recent Fotos 1.3 update. Another issue I have is the lack of lossless compressed RAW, which may or or may not be updated by firmware, but it would be very helpful. I bought the most expensive/fast SD card available (Sony Tough at 299MB/s write) but still got lock out many times during buffer clear. That being said, I remain hopeful since Leica did update the firmware of Q several times.

It's a nice combination actually. Sony is a master of fast AF and high quality filming..I was double so glad when I red your review about Q2..hope your issues will solve soon.Kindest regards

Leica, thank God, still makes a simple, instrument that has shutter speeds, aperture, ISO, focus and white balance...Learn what each does, and what they do in combination and really begin to do creative photography while shooting everything in manual mode.....and practice, Practice, PRACTICE!! The Leica Q2 is not a computer! and it is not a video recorder! and it certainly is not for blogging or selfies. Leica is a pallet, rich beautiful paints, and fine, expensive Camel's hair brushes just waiting for the CREATIVITY inside your heart and soul, and a keen eye....If one owns a Ferrari, I doubt seriously it would be used for pizza deliveries or pulling a trailer. What people wish this fine instrument has, or lacks, is available from all camera makers at a more affordable price....Me, I still employ a light meter hanging from my 90 year old neck for everything I shoot. Happy shooting friends!! and please, don't make too many demands of LEICA, they have been doing it right longer than everybody!
I bought the Q1 about a year before the release of the Q2, so late in the game. But I have grown to love the camera and the look/rendering of the images i get from it. Which is great, the reason I got it was to be able to take more pictures - I found I wasn't lugging my Nikon D810 + gear around as it was too bulky,. So I needed a smaller compact camera with a fixed lens, but I didn't want to lose out on image photo quality or that look I liked. Hence the Q. But I have grown to love the experience of shooting with the Q, Aperture and Shutter Speed Dials and rings that seamlessly switch from manual to auto S or A, and the EVF, of course. I don't use my Nikon much at all these days. BUT to my point. I have checked out the sample images of the Q2 and used it at the camera store ... and I am a little disappointed. The camera does seem to have lost something? The images don't have the same ... any words I use will sound pretentious ... Leica Look / cinematic look / smooth rendering / organic film look / colour ... whatever it is. The sensor has changed something. The images look digital and sterile - to me. The look has changed. It might suit you, but it doesn't suit me. I won't be upgrading.
Sorry, I forgot to add that I agree with your assessment about the images not looking the same. It's hard to put into words but I get what you're saying. Thank you for your honest review. With so many high level UA-cam Camera reviewers touting it as the next best thing since sliced bread, I was beginning to lose my mind. I kept expecting someone to comment on the look of the images being totally different .... "but what about the colour? The colour is off ... does nobody see this?" LOL. Anyways, thanks for being upfront. Sorry your purchase hasn't worked out - at least it has a great resale value - should you wish to change to a Leica Q-P. It might be an even swap!
What do you mean by "not as good photos"?! Can you explain how it is compared to your Leica X? It's hard to hear you're not happy with your camera and you are not able to say what
There is a new sensor in the Q2 so it could have a different color science than previous Leicas maybe? Also, I have read that Leica JPG’s (skin tones for an example) aren’t that good straight out of the camera, like for an example Fuji and Canon is. Maybe you just need to work with the raw files a little bit to make your photos ”good”?
I had a problem with not being able to turn of the highlights. Leica Mayfair we're very helpful over the e-mail but where baffled and couldn't help solve the problem. Emails to Leica Wetzler where not answered.so I went info the Leica store in Warsaw Poland they were also baffled saying it was normal I asked them to pull out the store's Q2 and it was not normal after 25 minutes they come up with resetting the camera and bingo all is well now. I could care less about wireless, photoapps etc.. my primary concern is when I press the shutter button is it instant? And how reliable as just a camera, i do not see the point of buying something like this and fumbling with phone apps wifi bs etc.. now what will be the deal killer for me is the camera not working well as a camera.
Zeiss ZX1 time...! They do say that high-res cameras require better stabilisation, faster shutters etc - hence the inclusion of IBIS for the 102mp GFX100.
Yes it’s a lovely camera but I still prefer the pictures from the Q. The app has improved and Leica are incorporating the feedback in future releases. Plus they have stopped charging for the pro version. I made a video about it but have removed it last week when they made the app Free.
What are you complaining about? The issues will be fixed as stated in the email. Further, all software / firmware are like bananas. It needs to ripe at the customer at home. And this applies to any kind of software.
Excellent video review. Obviously the New Leica Q2 has issues. Must be frustrating spending such a great deal cash for this item. Hopefully, Leica can quickly resolve these issues. It’s a shame. Keep up these honest product reviews.
I know this is a late comment on an old video, but Fuji and Sony apps stink as well. I’ve just sold a Ricoh GRiii and that had the best WiFi app/connection of any camera I’ve tried. Flawless. Fuji is terrible and very slow. On the Sony, second Sony camera I’ve owned, I have to delete the camera registration each time I use it. Some of these issues might be problems created by Apple iOS software, but the Ricoh software... just worked. I may regret selling that camera.
Maybe it is that I have no interest whatsoever on the camera apps, including but not limited to Leica. I’ve had a Q for quite a while, never used the apps so I would never have that problem. About sharpness, I don’t know how good in-camera stabilization will be to prevent camera shake. With 47 MP, shake is a concern unless the stabilization system has been upgraded. I use a Nikon D850 and a Fuji GFX 50s. They never go under 1/60th of a second handheld... but that’s me. Other photographers say that they get the sharpest images handheld at low speeds. I get razor sharp images at low speeds... on a tripod. If that is a problem on the Q2 and I wouldn’t be surprised, I imagine they will come up with a firmware solution pretty soon. Sharpness and perfect color is part of the magic of Leica.

There's a new phone system and the guys are focusing on answering the phone, hopefully you'll notice a difference. ps. the strap is a COOPH rope strap and it looks good on your camera.
i really want a new Q, but they don't make them anymore. I hate buying used ones from people online. Just not trustworthy as there could be issues with the camera. The Q2 is just too pricey right now.
Raised these concerns about Leica Q2 Video over a month ago, sadly no answers to date. You think (or anybody else) can illuminate me? On the Q in continuous auto focus the focus point disappeared when shooting video; I had to mark spots on the lcd screen saver film on the intersecting thirds to ensure and preserve focus while moving. This seems to have been resolved in the Q2 and I see the focus points while filming. In the Q I could set a constant aperture for shallow or deep focus and the ISO would go into automatic while shutter speed was constant at twice the fps. I was not entirely happy but I found the changing ISO mostly acceptable. On the Q2 howevever, in video everything seems to go automatic. Aperture, ISO and shutter. Which takes away the few decisions I could make regarding depth of field, etc. More critically, I see the shutter speed changing within the shot as I move, depending on the light levels. The shutter speed doesn't seem to be a fixed rate, at twice the FPS. I am surprised the shutter speed is not a constant at twice the FPS, as it should be by default or by choice. I am deeply concerned therefore that the footage may be choppy or strobing. And that too varying within the shot. I need to know if like the Q I can set the aperture and that like the Q the shutter speed is constant while the ISO may change. Otherwise my joy at the addition of 4K in the Q2 is erased by the setback of losing all control in video and perhaps ending with shots where the shutter speed varies. I would be grateful if you could help me, in case I have erred in my understanding. Alternatively, can I look forward to an imminent firmware upgrade that restores a critical feature that the Q had.
Interesting. We all have different priorities with our camera. Personally I couldn’t give a rat’s arse about the app and I’d shoot exclusively in RAW. I suspect that the app will be sorted eventually. I don’t have the wealth to buy a Q2 so my X-Pro 2 will have to do. I’d still like one :)
It's normal that apps will mess because they are messing with japanese tech of the camera . Yep Leica q is not 100% german leica material. Likewise it is rude to compare the q to x because you are desperate about connection for real? I suggest check your phone connection activation to connect to the camera, same as checking your camera if it's connected to your phone be sure to connect your wifi, meaning the internet also check tutorial on YT about connection. I have the same problem with my fuji connecting to Internet which was resolved. I don't have a Q but x2, Anyway good luck to you and why not buy a leather leica strap instead of a rope.
First world problems! Seriously, most camera apps are garbage and rarely work well. Fuji's for example is horrible, useless for video. Q2 only came out last month, I'd give Leica a little more time to sort things out. Interfacing a camera with phone OS isn't as easy as you may think. I also highly doubt Q2 image quality is inferior to the couple years old 16MP APS-C Leica X. Operator error for sure. In any case if you are seriously fed up with your camera (and you have every right to be) just know Q2 is fetching above retail price on ebay ;) Good luck
I saw $7k USD ( Ebay).... I CANNOT imagine someone buying one for that price... I know of ONE guy who sold his for what he paid for it... That's an honest man.
For “German tech” it always be like this. Mercedes, BMW, Leica etc. they sure have great engineering but when it comes to connectivity with modern tech, like an app, they don’t seem to give any fuck and do it as frustrating as possible for users.
Leica needs to stick to making cameras. It needs to not follow the idea that making a camera do more than take photos, is a good thing. I want fewer functions, not more!
You should try sending a letter to Sony or Apple or a myriad of other companies. You'll get the same reply or none. Your being a bit unfair to Leica. I hope you work out your issues.
What do you expect for 5K, a working camera ???? ;-) Stick to the Q, 24MP is enough, better Low Light performance, better buffer cause the image size is much smaller, same lens, can't go wrong with a Q
Congratulations, you have purchased the typical German over engineered product with typical shitty software. German's are engineers and scientists with the interpersonal skills that come with it. Beyerdynamic, Zeiss, Leica, BMW, etc.... Shitty customer service here in Germany is just something one cannot excuse when you purchase high end equipment. What is astonishing, they dont see it and they could not care less.... SO, before you jump into the world of high end German gear, do your homework, understand what you are getting into and accept the idea of getting shitty service.
I was about to buy an M10R And Monochrom M10 with 2-3 lenses. The horror stories I have read on the Leica forums and others going back as far as 2000. 3-6 months to get cameras fixed or lenses/ rangefinders calibrated is basically a complete spit in the face after spending so much money. No way I’m spending €23-25k for shit customer service. When Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon can have a device back in 3 weeks max from service - having to send an M body to Germany and wait for their useless service to complete is a definitely no go. Fujifilm will continue to take my money , their service is second to none

there are no problems. Most Q2 owners are out there shooting photographs with it. Not worrying about video issues.

I don't use my Nikon much at all these days. BUT to my point. I have checked out the sample images of the Q2 and used it at the camera store ... and I am a little disappointed. The camera does seem to have lost something? The images don't have the same ... any words I use will sound pretentious ... Leica Look / cinematic look / smooth rendering / organic film look / colour ... whatever it is. The sensor has changed something. The images look digital and sterile - to me. The look has changed. It might suit you, but it doesn't suit me. I won't be upgrading.

With so many high level UA-cam Camera reviewers touting it as the next best thing since sliced bread, I was beginning to lose my mind. I kept expecting someone to comment on the look of the images being totally different .... "but what about the colour? The colour is off ... does nobody see this?" LOL. Anyways, thanks for being upfront. Sorry your purchase hasn't worked out - at least it has a great resale value - should you wish to change to a Leica Q-P. It might be an even swap!
What do you mean by "not as good photos"?! Can you explain how it is compared to your Leica X?

There is a new sensor in the Q2 so it could have a different color science than previous Leicas maybe? Also, I have read that Leica JPG’s (skin tones for an example) aren’t that good straight out of the camera, like for an example Fuji and Canon is. Maybe you just need to work with the raw files a little bit to make your photos ”good”?
I had a problem with not being able to turn of the highlights.
Leica Mayfair we're very helpful over the e-mail but where baffled and couldn't help solve the problem.
Emails to Leica Wetzler where not answered.so I went info the Leica store in Warsaw Poland they were also baffled saying it was normal I asked them to pull out the store's Q2 and it was not normal after 25 minutes they come up with resetting the camera and bingo all is well now.

I could care less about wireless, photoapps etc.. my primary concern is when I press the shutter button is it instant? And how reliable as just a camera, i do not see the point of buying something like this and fumbling with phone apps wifi bs etc.. now what will be the deal killer for me is the camera not working well as a camera.

I came across your video an was wondering if you still feel good about q2 an has the app improved .
Yes it’s a lovely camera but I still prefer the pictures from the Q. The app has improved and Leica are incorporating the feedback in future releases. Plus they have stopped charging for the pro version. I made a video about it but have removed it last week when they made the app Free.
What are you complaining about? The issues will be fixed as stated in the email. Further, all software / firmware are like bananas. It needs to ripe at the customer at home. And this applies to any kind of software.
This is dated April 2019. What's the current state of affairs with your Q2? Did things end up working out for you?

Excellent video review. Obviously the New Leica Q2 has issues. Must be frustrating spending such a great deal cash for this item. Hopefully, Leica can quickly resolve these issues. It’s a shame. Keep up these honest product reviews.
8:41, this where u went wrong my friend. Full auto is where the camera does all the guess work. Full auto does no good or "bad" camera justice
I know this is a late comment on an old video, but Fuji and Sony apps stink as well. I’ve just sold a Ricoh GRiii and that had the best WiFi app/connection of any camera I’ve tried. Flawless. Fuji is terrible and very slow. On the Sony, second Sony camera I’ve owned, I have to delete the camera registration each time I use it. Some of these issues might be problems created by Apple iOS software, but the Ricoh software... just worked. I may regret selling that camera.
How are the issues now with the Q2, are the problems solved?
Yes most of them. I think they have been listening to the customers and updating the firmware

Yes, they are fixed but in a different way
Maybe it is that I have no interest whatsoever on the camera apps, including but not limited to Leica. I’ve had a Q for quite a while, never used the apps so I would never have that problem. About sharpness, I don’t know how good in-camera stabilization will be to prevent camera shake. With 47 MP, shake is a concern unless the stabilization system has been upgraded. I use a Nikon D850 and a Fuji GFX 50s. They never go under 1/60th of a second handheld... but that’s me. Other photographers say that they get the sharpest images handheld at low speeds. I get razor sharp images at low speeds... on a tripod. If that is a problem on the Q2 and I wouldn’t be surprised, I imagine they will come up with a firmware solution pretty soon. Sharpness and perfect color is part of the magic of Leica.

ps. the strap is a COOPH rope strap and it looks good on your camera.
it takes better pictures than the Q but it gets moore noise on high iso just that. just learn the camera. but the Q is wonderfull to.
If there are software issues with the Q2, then sell it and wait for Q3.

Why buy this camera for video? there are a lot better choices for a video camera, for photos...this Q2 is the best!

i really want a new Q, but they don't make them anymore. I hate buying used ones from people online. Just not trustworthy as there could be issues with the camera. The Q2 is just too pricey right now.

Raised these concerns about Leica Q2 Video over a month ago, sadly no answers to date. You think (or anybody else) can illuminate me?
On the Q in continuous auto focus the focus point disappeared when shooting video; I had to mark spots on the lcd screen saver film on the intersecting thirds to ensure and preserve focus while moving. This seems to have been resolved in the Q2 and I see the focus points while filming.
In the Q I could set a constant aperture for shallow or deep focus and the ISO would go into automatic while shutter speed was constant at twice the fps. I was not entirely happy but I found the changing ISO mostly acceptable.
On the Q2 howevever, in video everything seems to go automatic. Aperture, ISO and shutter. Which takes away the few decisions I could make regarding depth of field, etc.
More critically, I see the shutter speed changing within the shot as I move, depending on the light levels. The shutter speed doesn't seem to be a fixed rate, at twice the FPS.
I am surprised the shutter speed is not a constant at twice the FPS, as it should be by default or by choice. I am deeply concerned therefore that the footage may be choppy or strobing. And that too varying within the shot.
I need to know if like the Q I can set the aperture and that like the Q the shutter speed is constant while the ISO may change. Otherwise my joy at the addition of 4K in the Q2 is erased by the setback of losing all control in video and perhaps ending with shots where the shutter speed varies.
I would be grateful if you could help me, in case I have erred in my understanding. Alternatively, can I look forward to an imminent firmware upgrade that restores a critical feature that the Q had.

Interesting. We all have different priorities with our camera. Personally I couldn’t give a rat’s arse about the app and I’d shoot exclusively in RAW. I suspect that the app will be sorted eventually. I don’t have the wealth to buy a Q2 so my X-Pro 2 will have to do. I’d still like one :)

It's normal that apps will mess because they are messing with japanese tech of the camera . Yep Leica q is not 100% german leica material. Likewise it is rude to compare the q to x because you are desperate about connection for real? I suggest check your phone connection activation to connect to the camera, same as checking your camera if it's connected to your phone be sure to connect your wifi, meaning the internet also check tutorial on YT about connection. I have the same problem with my fuji connecting to Internet which was resolved. I don't have a Q but x2, Anyway good luck to you and why not buy a leather leica strap instead of a rope.

First world problems! Seriously, most camera apps are garbage and rarely work well. Fuji's for example is horrible, useless for video. Q2 only came out last month, I'd give Leica a little more time to sort things out. Interfacing a camera with phone OS isn't as easy as you may think. I also highly doubt Q2 image quality is inferior to the couple years old 16MP APS-C Leica X. Operator error for sure. In any case if you are seriously fed up with your camera (and you have every right to be) just know Q2 is fetching above retail price on ebay ;) Good luck

For “German tech” it always be like this. Mercedes, BMW, Leica etc. they sure have great engineering but when it comes to connectivity with modern tech, like an app, they don’t seem to give any fuck and do it as frustrating as possible for users.
Leica needs to stick to making cameras. It needs to not follow the idea that making a camera do more than take photos, is a good thing. I want fewer functions, not more!
You've got one of the best photographic lenses for half price and you're spending 15min on the app... Who cares? A tween on Instagram maybe.

You should try sending a letter to Sony or Apple or a myriad of other companies. You'll get the same reply or none. Your being a bit unfair to Leica. I hope you work out your issues.

Stick to the Q, 24MP is enough, better Low Light performance, better buffer cause the image size is much smaller, same lens, can't go wrong with a Q
Congratulations, you have purchased the typical German over engineered product with typical shitty software. German's are engineers and scientists with the interpersonal skills that come with it. Beyerdynamic, Zeiss, Leica, BMW, etc.... Shitty customer service here in Germany is just something one cannot excuse when you purchase high end equipment. What is astonishing, they dont see it and they could not care less.... SO, before you jump into the world of high end German gear, do your homework, understand what you are getting into and accept the idea of getting shitty service.
I was about to buy an M10R And Monochrom M10 with 2-3 lenses. The horror stories I have read on the Leica forums and others going back as far as 2000. 3-6 months to get cameras fixed or lenses/ rangefinders calibrated is basically a complete spit in the face after spending so much money. No way I’m spending €23-25k for shit customer service. When Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon can have a device back in 3 weeks max from service - having to send an M body to Germany and wait for their useless service to complete is a definitely no go. Fujifilm will continue to take my money , their service is second to none

Like that the 28 mm on the q2 being good for every type of photography.. for that price the camera should have features that they just don’t have.
