    I tried to get into photography several times but kept giving up when my results weren't what I was hoping for. I bought a Q2 so that the guilt from the price would force me to learn. I ended up loving this thing. I didn't realize that my problem was that the cameras I've purchased before were just a pain to use. It isn't fun using shifting through menus and sorting through all the BS. I'm nearly 2000 photos into the Q2 and I'm fully in. It's a joy to use and the results are unreal (now that I've learned what I'm doing ;) ).

      Had both. The leica stayed due to better durability of the whole camera. It's not about showing your friends. With this camera noone ever asked me anything. You can stay perfectly undercover. This camera is understatement. That's what I like.

    I own an iPhone 11 Pro Max and a Leica Q2. I can’t say I agree in any way with the comparison here. The iPhone’s colours are unreal and over saturated whereas the Leica’s colours are the best of any digital camera I’ve ever used. In my opinion, it has a similar rendition to that of medium format film like Portra 400. It also only blows highlights if you shoot in JPEG. DNG files have impressive abilities to recover the highlights.
    I do like Canon colours a lot too, but there are some situations where Canons just don’t do well (neon lights for example). I have not found a single lighting situation where the Leica falls down.
    But I suppose colours are just all down to taste.

    Ferdinand Schnautzenhobel here, I'm writing to you from Wetzlar. We here at Leica are well aware that the colors suck. We would like to announce that we have addressed this issue and completely fixed it. Meet the Q2 monochrom. For a few hundred bucks more, you'll get a camera that will NEVER have you complaining about its color science. That's a Leica promise.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 роки тому +2

      Superb! It was I who originally suggested the monochrom back around 2009 not for it’s color rendition, but for the obvious gain in light sensitivity and in resolution when one removes the Bayer filter. Now if we could just get you guys to make 0.91x finders again as in the mighty M3 www.kenrockwell.com/leica/m3.htm Thank you for all your work.

    I started my photo passion with a Kodak Retina at age 14. It was manual, fstop, speed, and range-you had to do it all without a built in light meter. Since that time I’ve yearned for the same in a digital camera, and it’s been decades in the making. This camera seems to be the one I’ve been searching for. Having a durable and endearing camera today is a godsend. This camera is on order, but more importantly is that this will be something like the Retina, solid, exceptional and enduring.

      @@KenRockwellTV I hear you re Leica, but I truly like the idea of a full-frame fixed lens that has a Leica lens on it and is simple. I won't be buying Nikon again (having owned Nikon film cameras for 20 years before that D700 I had), maybe a mirrorless f/f Sony and a nice little Ricoh GR III. Heck, even a Fuji x100v or x-pro 3 would be nice, but because I prefer full-frame and Street photography is what I love most, it' seems it has to be the Leica Q2 for me (over an M10 plus lenses which would be super expensive and back to being big/weighty rather than small/light which is what I prefer more these days).

    Thanks for this very thorough review. For those coming in now, they upgraded the firmware spring '22 in both the Q2 and Q2 Monochrom - they added 'highlight metering' which takes care of some of the blown out highlights, and while I don't really shoot much in JPG, they have improved the BW and colors you get out of camera, and they have improved its AF performance. I love mine and have very few gripes about it. The menu system and simple operations make this a no brainer. I like my Nikon Z system for other purposes, and I had to return the Fuji system as it was just too many options to deal with. Perfect for many people but I'm trying to reduce my decision making when I'm out enjoying photography.

    I bought the q2 to have a solid camera to take everywhere. And which is focused on quick taking photos. And which I can use everywhere due to its weather resistance. For me it's not a rich man's camera. It's the only camera on the market that fits my needs: relatively small, superb image quality, quick pic taking. Durability and weather resistance.
    I think, Colors out of it in jpg look damn nice. Compared to my Sony cameras, photos out of the q2 always shine somehow. Though I like your review style, I had to comment something on this one. This is a niche camera and only fits a small group of people. You seem to be a happy iPhone shooter.

    It makes me a wee bit crazy when people bitch and moan about the price of the Leica Q2, so let’s put some perspective on that price. An equivalent resolution Canon R5 costs about $3900, body only and the roughly equivalent Canon 24mm F1.4 lens is $1550 making a total $5450. The same price point roughly applies to equivalent Sony A7R4 and lens and in both cases the Leica is far lighter and more discrete than those interchangeable lens cameras, albeit at the expense of that interchangeability.
    The beauty of the Q2 is that you’re getting a $6000 Leica lens on a camera more powerful than the $7000 M10 for $5000. That’s a bargain no matter how you cut it even when compared to offerings from Canon, Nikon and Sony.

      Yes one should expect better JPEG colors from such an expensive camera and for someone shooting JPEG only, Leica is not a good choice but rather Fujifilm for its variety of in-camera profiles. For someone shooting RAW like most professional photographers, Leica’s colors are great (and accurate) SOOC with just a little tweak of expo/contrast/temperature (needed with any camera). “It’s a Leica, it’s not about pictures, it’s all about the image of the man making the picture”: I know it’s catchy/cool thing to say nowadays and there are indeed some collectors and/or just wealthy people who buy Leica products just for the look. I can also assure you there are many great/successful photographers that shoot with Leica cameras because they are great tools for photography and they unable, inspire to, assist the photographers to make/in making great images. I understand you’re trying to review as many cameras and lenses as possible and spending time to understand the true potential of a tool is not your priority but I feel this video is misinforming your many subscribers unless they’re here purely for entertainment. The iPhone over saturates and darkens to make the photo more appealing. That’s doesn’t make the photos better. That makes them fake. Just my humble opinion.

    Hi. What about long exposure at high ISO? For $5000 it can’t do this - right? I’ve heard that Leica has put limitations on this camera. How do you get around this? • @KenRockwellTV

    • @stefanmusic
      @stefanmusic 4 роки тому

      There is a limit on the q2 on exposure time. I think it’s 120 or 240 seconds at iso 100. That is not long enough for a really long exposure at night especially if you’re into astrophotography for example... Even when you raise the iso to 6400, I think the camera gives you 4 seconds... something ridiculous. ua-cam.com/video/Apt1m8CoBV8/v-deo.html. Is this not a dealbreaker for a $5000 camera?

    • @jamiewindsor
      @jamiewindsor 4 роки тому +2

      stefanmusic It brings the iso down the longer the exposure. 2 mins+ = 100 iso max, 1 min = 200 iso max, 30s = 400 iso, 15s=800 etc. So if you’re an astrophotographer, it’s not a good choice for you.

However before I could get totally carried away with German craftsmanship I took a peek into the viewfinder and to my horror saw a highly magnified hair or thread or stick embedded inside. Truthfully it looks like a tiny tree branch. I use a Leica Q2 for about 10 months now. Compare to my sony a7r3, here are my experience. Q2 is extremely intuitive to use, love the menu, how easy to operate with minimum number of bottoms and control. The lens is insanely sharp with beautiful bokeh. What I wish to have is a tilt screen. The camera metal body makes this thing much heavier than the size suggests, and it’s too big to fit in pocket. The color is subject to people, compare to Q, I suspect the chip is Japanese. Also it needs a fast card to give you decent speed. Personally I think Q1 is a better choice. However, no regret, this camera will probably outlast me.

    What I utterly fail to understand is the hype about resolution (detail capture) that one hears about the Q2 because of the 47 Mp, like it were some kind of world record. Simple math shows that that is about 54 Kp per square mm on the sensor. A more down-to-earth sensor like the APS-C on the Fuji X100V (26 Mp) (to which the Q2 is often compared) has about 71 Kp per sq mm. That's about 31% more detail on the X100V sensor. In addition, the 35 mm vs 28 mm effective focal length means that, at any given distance, the Q2 captures (if I get the math right) an area about twice as large as the X100V. Resolution? Detail? It's ok to argue about a possibly lower noise on the Q2 because of less crammed pixels, but certainly not more detail!

    It _guess_ it's an _okay_ camera. For a digital.
    I was lucky enough to have lived near a professional photo lab where I could get a roll of any film in any format developed for $5, pushed or pulled for free up to three stops- and I took full advantage. But for some unfathomable reason, I decided to learn on, then _exclusively_ use a crunchy $39 Russian knockoff of a Barnack Leica called a "Zorkee" (ew) with its included collapsible 50mm for many years. I don't know man, my excuse is that every teenager is at least a little bit of a psychopath. This lasted for several years until the film lab closed down forever after repeated smash-and-grab robberies. This isn't a Portra-colored 90s' story by the way, this was like 2015. I was still in high school.
    That time was good. Its dim uncoupled viewfinder meant my naive beginner mind could not be led astray from the righteous path by the temptations of bokeh-lust. Its clunky but clearly marked controls taught me to predict action and think about changing light. The low but non-zero cost of bulletproof consumer-grade films forced me to consider each shot somewhat, taught me to meter with my head, and rewarded me with beautiful colors that actual geniuses perfected over multiple generations. I was lucky enough not to know what the word "highlights" even _meant_ until my local film lab got robbed out of business. The ability to shoot endlessly with digital never even appealed to me. Who cares about being able to take a million pictures for free, when that only means worrying about bulk, batteries, noise, crushed shadows, ugly blown highlights- a million times?
    After getting kicked out of the 35mm Garden of Eden overnight, I decided it was probably a good time to learn about this newfangled "digital photography" thing- and my god it was horrible. I'm not old enough to remember what happened back in the day, but from bits and pieces of information I could gather, I arrived at the conclusion that some unrecorded global catastrophe must have happened around the year 2001, possibly related to Dick Cheney and an insurance scam on some office buildings. I don't know, maybe you can verify that one for me, Ken. Anyway, I claim that this mysterious cataclysmic event for some reason caused literally every camera manufacturer (except like Leica and Zeiss) to forget what _usable cameras_ were supposed to be like, and made them churn out endless streams of *laggy plastic gameboy readymade e-waste with zero dynamic range* onto the market until... present day actually, in so many ways. For a period of about 10 years, every single compact camera was garbage and the entire concept of "reasonably small wide angle prime for ANY system, under $2000" straight up did not exist- and nobody seemed to have even noticed during that time. People talk about a coming "digital dark age," but I think I saw one happen already.
    The fact that my sand-filled pocket-tractor of a rangefinder, an actual hunk of SHIT that would have been considered *already outdated* and an *objectively awful* machine on the very day it was _assembled by literal orphans using stolen tools-_ would actually end up _sheltering_ me from the wasteland of the digital market, is a bit worrying to say the least. I was lucky enough not to know what the word "highlights" even _meant_ until my local film lab got robbed out of business. The ability to shoot endlessly with digital never even appealed to me. Who cares about being able to take a million billion pictures for free, when that only means worrying about bulk, batteries, noise, crushed shadows, ugly blown highlights- a million billion times?
    I was technically spared from all of that digital camera nonsense because I soon met an fool on Facebook Marketplace who sold me his M240 for $2000. I showed up believing it was stolen, but this _nerd_ had actually held onto every last scrap of packaging and paperwork related to the camera like an actual insane person. I asked him why he was selling it, half expecting a badly-constructed lie about , but the idiot had been using it for _video_ with _adapted Canon DSLR lenses_ and was dissatisfied by the clunkiness of the setup and resulting video- which he played for me on an iPad, unsolicited. I asked no further questions and completed the purchase hoping I wasn't having some fever dream.
    It wasn't a dream. I'm using the thing with a $50 lens I ordered from Ukraine and a Voigtlander, and I am enjoying the decadent luxury of a combined VF/RF. And my god, what a disappointing camera it still is. It's nice certainly, but not like "retailed for the price of a decent used car at the time" nice. For all that money, it was still fatter and heavier than a svelte film M, and I still had to worry about silly digital things like sensor dust, long exposure noise, dynamic range, and batteries. No matter how long the battery life is, the simple fact of having a "timer" over my head when the camera is "switched on" (still a blasphemous concept to me) affects how I approach photography, and I don't like it. Not to say that I would never think about latitude when using negative film, but it was usually more of a "brief consideration" and not "disappointment and bargaining" as is typically the case with digital.
    For some reason Portra costs like $40 per roll nowadays, and only people who bought Bitcoin in 2011 can afford film now... so I guess all I can do is eventually cough up for an M11.
    ...and still have to live with a silly battery time limit. 😭
    Stay spry and un-probed, Mr. Rockwell.

      I’ve gotten my film at B&H and Adorama since the 1970s! Always been much less expensive there; NEVER buy at a local store. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Roll-Film/ci/2545/N/4294548524/BI/287/KBID/1037

    Get a Fuji X100 V for a fraction of the cost, a cheaper, lighter, more practical, more elegant camera, I get amazing pictures out of my Fuji. In today's technology, all cameras are good. Incredible pictures have absolutely nothing to do with the camera.

      Exactly. The LEICA is a plaything for the well off, nothing more.

    First review I've seen on the q2 that exposes its warts. I'm convinced: it's not worth $5600

      If you have to ask, no, of course it's not worth it. LEICA is jewelry for men, the price always exceeds a LEICA's function. Thanks!

    What do you mean by Leica isn’t about the picture but the lifestyle? I prefer my Q2 and M10 OOC pictures over any other brand except Nikon. If you were a salesman trying to sell me a 5k camera just for “ the lifestyle”, then I’m not sure I would buy it. I think that 28mm on the q2 is the best out there.

      As we agree, Nikon takes better pictures. I’m not a salesman. LEICA is for playboys, like a Porsche. It’s not a camera for taking pictures anymore than a Porsche turbo is about taking kids to school or getting groceries.

      Ken Rockwell yes Ken, but later on in the video you mention that the Q2 doesn’t need a delete button since all pictures taken with it are perfect unlike Canon and Sony, etc. it seems you’re contradicting yourself a little.

    Love your video, so far I only can afford this Leica via a Video perhaps... My question I always asked but never got an answer--what is the macro ratio? 4:1 as most pseudo macro lenses or a real 1:1???

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  4 роки тому +2

      Look at the watch picture and do the math yourself: that’s as close as it gets. Looks like about 1:3 or so, certainly not 1:1. Thanks!

      Thank you for your reply, 1:3 is certainly more a advertising gimmick than a useful macro.--Still, better than nothing.
      Cheers and keep up the good work

      D LUX isn't real LEICA, is it? I wish I had the time, but with so many lesser brands putting out "cameras" today I have to limit myself to the Barnack-Format (24x36) cameras. I need to get to the M10P next. THANKS!

      Easy: if you want a premium camera, LEICA is superb. If you want great photos, stick with Nikon or Canon. I’ll admit I’ve never bothered with the Hasselblad digital because I prefer my German Zeiss lenses on my 500 series system. Thanks!

    Why is it grown men go weak at the knees at the mention of Leica... Partly, I think, because everyone know that they cost so much, and are slightly quirky (read flawed). I actually thought that a lot of those pictures were really good, the detail is stunning. That will be the lens then. Sony sensor? And how are they with firmware updates? Olympus make the most attractive cameras, what a pity they never stuffed a full frame sensor in them. If you've got the money, you'd buy one.
