This movie had a stellar cast: Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Hank Azaria, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Calista Flockhart, Christine Baranski, Dan Futterman...just superb.
I thought so too. Then near the end when Val acknowledges Albert as his "Mother', was also sweet as well. You saw that Albert was the "nurturing" one in the Family. On The UK Soap Opera Emmerdale, Vanessa Woodfield who's about to marry her Girlfriend Charity is the "Mother" watching over her Son Johnny and Charity's Son Moses. Moviefan2k4, it also shows that Gays can be just as good as parents as straight ones.
That was part of the cleverness of this movie. Honestly, the part where Val asks his dad to change and when Robin Williams says “do me a favor...don’t talk to me” is probably one o the most realistic father/son depictions I have ever seen.
This is a remake of an Italian movie, so if you knew the plot of that movie, you'd know one of the men has a son. Still, the depiction of the relationship between Armand and Val is very good and authentic.
I never got the "boy toy" vibe even before Val was introduced as his son. Armand seemed a little aloof and the way Val gave him the confused look when he touched his hair.
Armand tries so hard to be a “dad” in the macho sense of the word. I LOVE this movie so much

My favorite part of this scene is Armand's toast; Robin played it perfectly.
I was like you bastard when Val came in the first time I was watching this movie but then when I found out he was his son I was like awww.
They played it well to fool everyone!
The part after this when albert goes to vals room to pick up his laundry is my fav scene in this movie

tbf in a way. this movie was ahead of its time in terms of family dynamics and what not. kudos to it.
“Beer if you have it?”
“I do not!”
Talk about bloat. White wine.
Such a clever clever scene , he sneaking a secret lover in to the house but thee is a huge chunk cut from the middle of this
LOVE DAN FUTTERMAN WITH ALL MY HEART AND ALWAYS WILL
Folks who were born in the 1990's "Loved" this Movie. One was so upset thinking that Albert was being cheated on.
nice viking pools scene in birdcage 1996 film !!!!
great scene
1:50 to 1:55
I thought that Val was a former Boy Toy he used to kick it with.
I think that was the implication they were going for, to keep the surprise of Armand having a son.

That was the point :)
@@Wasserkaktus I think it was French movie.
When I first saw this scene literally thought Val was his boy toy
And another with Daddy issues lol.
That's exactly how the early part of the scene plays out.
Same. But I was relieved that it wasn’t true
Me too
It was intended to make it seem like that

White wine: f*ck yeah!
Was this a set or a real location? I know it was filmed at The Carlyle but this does not exist at The Carlyle.
OMG...this is the first time I registered who Jeb Bush & the Bushes the Keeleys refer to are -_-
God to harken to a day and age when no one knew who Jeb Bush was...
Is it tough being a genius?
¿Bradley Cooper is the son??
Was Dad hitting on the son?
No he was giving him a Hug & a Kiss. He probably hadn't seen him for awhile since he's in College.
The scene is played so you think that they are secret lovers, but in the next scene you realize they are father and son. It's clever screenwriting.
