    One thing you may want to look into on your next trip to San Francisco is a hotel that offers destination charging. Many do these days, and it's usually a free perk of being a guest there. That will let you charge overnight, and not have to worry about going so far out of your way to Supercharge (which I agree is totally a drag when you have to do it).

    • @larrybenjamin6242
      @larrybenjamin6242  5 років тому +1

      Thanks. I did look into destinations charging but we had a pet with us and there’s few hotels that allow that and even fewer with chargers. The infrastructure is going to have to expand before EV is viable for trips. I love mine and find it easy where I live as I have a charger but the Superchargers are spread out in LA, the second largest city in the US.

    In the future when reserving a room at a hotel or motel ask if they have EV charging for a Tesla. You might be surprised how many have a destination charger. If they don't tell them they can get up to two destination chargers for Tesla's for free. Just have to pay for the electricity they use. Will bring a lot of Tesla owners in when they discover you have a Tesla destination charger aka a HPWC ( high power wall connector).
    And once they inform Tesla the destination charger is in service it will show up on the supercharger map.
    Cheers!

    If staying at a hotel, use a destination charger for an easy Level 2 charge overnight, as at home. Or stop at a Supercharger along the way. There are plenty of Superchargers along major highways.
    I find the air conditioning set to Auto works fine with almost no changes except adjusting the temperature infrequently.
    Autopilot is highly useful both on long road trips and stuck in traffic and takes much of the tedium and frustration of traffic away.
    The stock Premium Audio system is excellent for a factory sound system. It was probably developed by a German engineering company Harmon International bought, if Tesla went to the same vendor as S and X.

    • @larrybenjamin6242
      @larrybenjamin6242  5 років тому

      You have a smart take on things and I agree with everything you said except the Level 2 charging at a hotel. We had a pet with us and there are few pet friendly places and even fewer with chargers. But, had I not had our dog with us, that would have been my plan. I love this car a lot but for EV to be more widespread, additional chargers will be necessary. I have a home charger but know people who charge just at the Superchargers where there’s often a small wait as the stalls are full.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 5 років тому

      @@larrybenjamin6242 Thanks Larry. Level 2 charging will become much more common as EVs become widely adopted, for hotels, shops, offices, parking lots/garages, and even street parking eventually. The latter is already happening in some cities like London and Paris. Really all that's needed is an electric outlet.
      Please remind folks using Superchargers that if they use them too often, it can degrade their battery capacity over time. It's definitely better to charge overnight at home, both for the grid and the battery.
      Understand not everyone can charge at home, but eventually it will be available for more people per above. All that's needed for apartment or condo charging is outlets or J1772 EVSEs ("chargers"), and that *will* become commonplace as millions more EVs are purchased in the near future. All that's needed for those is electricity, and almost everyone lives somewhere with electricity.

    • @larrybenjamin6242
      @larrybenjamin6242  5 років тому

      Loanword Eggcorn you bring up very good points and I should mention in my next video about using the Supercharger too much as well as fully charging to 100%. That’s good to hear that European cities have them more widespread and with other manufacturers producing an array of EV models we’ll surely see more here.

    Thanks for the video - it was nice that you focused on the audio and autopilot extensively. Two areas oft ignored. In addition accessing out of the at superchargers is a very big issue up in Canada where there just isn’t the same density as say California.
    Alas, despite being an IT professional and a business owner I can’t justify spending 60,000 CAD including taxes for the configuration that I would want.

    Really nice video. Thank you. I am curious if those EQ settings you showed were how you actually set it in the car? I've always read from "real sound guys" on the internet that you aren't supposed to put any of the frequency bars above 0db due to the potential of distortion. But now that I know you actually *are* a real sound guy, what's your take on that issue?

    • @larrybenjamin6242
      @larrybenjamin6242  5 років тому

      Hi, thank you very much for your kind words. Unfortunately, the information you read on the internet about EQ settings isn't true. Those are the settings I use, just little bump on the low end and a little on the high end. It's known as the "smiley face EQ". Those are pretty subtle settings, you could actually increase the bass EQ significantly and while it'll sound boomy and very bass heavy, it won't distort. There are some equalizers that will distort when boosted by a significant amount but not the one in the Model 3. If you kept the controls at 0db without boosting or cutting any frequencies, then it wouldn't be doing anything and would be considered set to "flat". I hope this helps. You'd be surprised how much equalization occurs for music, sound effects and dialog in TV and film soundtracks.

    Hey Larry, great video....I have a question about the sound system. My 2019 M2LR "had" spectacular audio....I mean, just amazingly powerful bass....would go right through you....every type of music sounded just awesome. But then in mid-2020 after a firmware upgrade, it went very flat and has never been the same since. Tesla had it in their shop twice and even replaced the sub but could not see any problem. I compared my audio to some other M3's (later builds than mine) and they also had "flat" audio although the owners thought the audio was great. I can only think they never heard what the audio was like before. So my conclusion is that Tesla modified the audio settings in 2020 to reduce the power of the audio system (particularly the bass from the sub) as maybe ppl were blowing their subs. Either way, it's really a disappointment for me now and I wonder if you had any thoughts on this? Did you notice a difference last year? Thanks in advance :-)

    • @larrybenjamin6242

      Hey Mike, I hear what you're saying about updating the firmware and having the bass go away. I haven't experienced this and have paid particular attention to the frequency response of the car's audio system. I agree, it does have powerful bass reproduced from the systems many speakers and subwoofer. I do have the latest updated software and HW3.0. My car will be 4 years old in December so perhaps it's not affected? I'm sorry your car's audio system took a step back, at least in the low end frequency range.

      @mikeemoo 2 роки тому

      @@larrybenjamin6242 Thanks for the response Larry. It's really strange how there's a lack of concensus on the change of punchyness to the audio last year which was immediately noticeable in my car. I spoke with another guy at a Supercharger a few months ago who also had a 2019 M3 and he didnt notice any difference in his audio over the past 12 months. I sat and listened to a few tracks in his car but his didn't have the power I previously had in mine. I've read a few comments on the TMC Forums from people who noticed the same as me so something weird went on with subwoofer setup on some cars. I did Tweet Elon but naturally he was too busy randomly tweeting something irrelevant to respond to me lol.
      Maybe one day I'll get to the bottom of it..... :-(

I see this all the time at work with loud sounds and music that the speakers we use have more capacity than even a very loud sound. There is protection as to not get into clipping which could cause harm. The sound they've chosen spans the frequency spectrum so it's not concentrated in only one range.

    You incorrectly stated that you could get more VOLTAGE at a different supercharger. That is incorrect, what you should have said is more POWER (as in Watts). Otherwise, a nicely produced video with good explanation. I would never trust autopilot in heavy rain however as the cameras cannot perform as well due to distortion of the images.

    If you are spending 10-12 hours overnight at a motel why not run an extension cord out the window of the unit and charge the car overnight? Also would this work: a portable charging unit that has two power sockets providing input to double up the output to provide double the power from a motel or friends place with out a charger? It wouldn't be about getting a full charge just a bit of range extension.

Tell them they can get two domestic high power wall chargers from Tesla for free, all the hotel needs to do is pay for the install and the power. When Tesla adds your hotel/motel to their mapping program you will notice a increase in Tesla owners using your hotel/motel. Definitely a way to increase business.
