  • In this video, I replaced the mode door actuator on a 2010 Ford F-150 Lariat. This vehicle has dual zone temperature control, but the process should be the same on vehicles with single-zone/manual climate control.
    Time required: 5-20mins
    Tools required: 1/4-drive ratchet, 8mm socket. 3/8-drive ratchet, 6" 3/8-drive extension, 13mm socket.
    Parts used: Motorcraft YH-1881 8L8Z-19E616-C a.co/drGiBgZ
    I created this video with the UA-cam Video Editor ( / editor )

    Thanks for posting this vid. It helped me replace the actuator on my 2013 F150 and get the vents working again. It was a pain getting to the actuator but once you get access it goes smoothly

    Great video. A great help. I have a 2014 fx2. It’s not necessary to remove the gas pedal but I can see how that would make it easier. Took me around 45 minutes. Thanks for taking the time to video your work.

    I'm so glad I found this video. I have a 2014 F150 super crew platinum. That clicking noise was driving me crazy ! I had the new part for about a month, but was dreading taking the seats and console out to get to it. All I can say is, If you don't want to spend $900 or more to have the dealership replace it . Please follow this video ! Thank you !

    Great video! I have a 2014 FX4 with the power pedals and everything here was exactly what I needed to do. Took me around 30 minutes to complete and that was mostly just finding a way to move around the seat and upside down under the dash.

    My truck is a 2008 F-150 XLT and except for my gas pedal being mounted with 10mm bolts and the Mode Door Actuator assembly being held on with 3 8mm bolts, this video is spot on and i was able to replace the part in about 20 minutes with a hand ratchet. Everything is working great! Thanks for the well done video

    You are a lifesaver! I am a 60 year old woman and was able to replace the mode door actuator in my Ford Escape by watching your video. Didn't have to dismantle the gas pedal in the Escape. I had to run back inside a couple of times to watch a part of the video again, especially how the little red locking clip went back in the plug. I now have defrost and floor air again in my car. Thank you so much!!

    VERY VERY helpful as many threads on you tube suggest Temperature Blend Actuator replacement which is behind the radio in the middle console, but when YOUR PROBLEM is normal air temps but only from the defrost vents and floor it is NOT the temperature BLEND Actuator but IT IS THE HVAC MODE DOOR ACTUATOR. I have a 2012 F-150 Platinum Model and it just went from fine to no air at all to the dash and rear seat console and just to the floor and defrost and that is the symptom of the failure of the AC Mode Door Actuator found on the drivers side of the console just above the accelerator pedal. I am NOT a mechanic but was able to change the MODE Door Actuator Ford YH 1818 or Dorman #604241 From Advance Autoparts for $35.00 and removed the Accelerator pedal with (3) #13mm screws and just pushed it to the side then with a small socket wrench 1/4 inch drive and and extension 4 inch (needed) I removed the actuator itself and tested it by pushing the metal rod attached up and down and replaced it and Voila...The vents all worked again including the dash and rear console which had no flow before... Thanks AKJeeper you saved me a bundle and your video was top notch and well done. Keep making them for us "common non-mechanic folks"
    By the way I took it to a dealer and made an appt. but the service manager was nice enough to tell me it was not a VACUUM line problem but likely the MODE Door Actuator so his advice helped me find this thread....

    Thank you for this very well done video. Thanks to you I found this actuators placement , the guys at the Ford shop assured me it under the radio and would require tearing the dash out to fix it. now I will do it myself for a fraction of the cost.

    Dude thank you!!!! I have a 2013 F150 5.0 Supercrew. Replaced the one behind my stereo but didn't fix my issue. I always had great heat and cold air....just had the loud annoying clicking noise when switching between heat and cold air. Weeks of trying to find out if I had to pull my entire dash or not. Sounded like it was clicking up top by the windshield. Found your video and sure enough, the sound was from this actuator here. Replaced today and more clicking noise!! Thanks again. I owe you!!

    Incredibly helpful video as I was having the same problems as was described in the video. The process was the same for my 2005 F150 Lariat and I think the only difference is that the actuator was held in place with three 8 mm screws rather than just two. If you're a person on the larger side, you may not want to eat a big meal before doing this as you have to contort your body a bit to reach those upper screws on the actuator and accelerator pedal. As someone else mentioned, having a power tool similar to the one in the video helps a lot, but you'll need the proper extensions to fit it in and reach everything.

      Yeah, I'm not a tiny person (6'2" 275lbs) and had to lay upside down in the drivers seat with my legs in the air and head hanging upside down in the foot well. Had to take 2 breaks to let the blood back out of my head before I got the old out and new bolted back in, but the new part fixed my issues completely... Saved a ton of money! Would have been a lot easier if I could have flipped the truck upside down! LOL!

    Thanks. This worked great for my 2010 Expedition. Saved me a lot of money. Just one suggestion to save you time and hassle - make sure you get an OEM part. I went cheap ($20) and bought one off Amazon that said it was the right part to include the part # but it didn't fit even though it looked right. I reordered the OEM part ($38) and it popped right back in.

    Exactly what I needed! Ford gave me the wrong part and argued with me about it. Told me I'm watching too many UA-cam videos! He is not watching enough!!! Once I pulled the part it looked exactly like the one in the video. Ordered the part number you provided in the video next day from Amazon and took the wrong part back to Ford. Being a large and not very flexible guy I had a difficult time just figuring out how I was going to even see what I was doing and reach that far up under the dash. Total repair cost me $27 for the part and ironically took me 27 minutes from the time I took the tools out until i put them away! It was the same process for my 2014 F150 XLT as in the video. My problem was a broken gear tooth on the old actuator that caused a clicking sound anytime I tried to change from floor vent to dash vent. Can't imagine what the dealer would have charged me for this simple repair.

    My expedition has no heat, but blows only cold, on the driver side. The passenger side works for hot and cold. Is it the Hvac mode door acuator, or the lower blend door acuator that will fix my problem. The lower blend door is under the dash behind the console, not sure which one it is.

  • @tomw5824

    Hi - I've reviewed multiple videos from all over the internet but nothing seems to cover my exact situation. I have a 2010 F150 Lariat with a center console, navigation, dual climate control and adjustable pedals. My problem is that the passenger side vents (both upper and lower) are blowing hot air when I have the A/C on. The drivers side is blowing cold air as is the 2 vents for the back seat. In addition, the blower door controls (defrost, upper, lower) don't seem to have much effect. E.G. if I set it to defrost and lower, I still get significant air from the top vents. If I set it to upper only, I still get air from the lower (and maybe the defrost - I don't know). From what I've described, what actuator(s) do I need to be concerned with? Does it make sense that multiple actuators would fail at the same time - or is this symptomatic of something else? In any event, I'd like to fix the A/C ASAP since we are in the sweltering part of the summer (100 deg tomorrow). Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch ....

    Question - is there a way to reset the position of the module? Module cycles through, but the dash stays open (floor only) until I get to the defrost. The dash shuts off on defrost and floor. If I tap the button fast enough between defrost and floor to only floor, the dash doesn’t come on. Any thoughts?

I'm trying to fix my mother's King ranch 1 day the passenger side will blow warm and driver side cool and vice-versa. I did get under dash and i heard a clicking sound. Is there temporary bypass I can do maybe moving blend doors and keeping them open for cold. This heat is ridiculous.

    Hey Bud, Got a question. I have a 2016 XLT and I just did basically the same thing with minor differences due to model changes. The mode door actuator I replaced and the new one works...but it doesnt line up with what actually happens on the control panel. Did you have any issues with this? Like for instance to get maximum defroster, I have to hit defroster and face on the buttons. Face works as expected. Max floor I think is like face and floor on the buttons. It's weird.

The one you installed on this video is the one I need help with. I installed it and it does not work correctly. When I click one of the modes like floor or front panel or defrost it doesn’t change and the motor doesn’t engage when the mode is clicked. I have a 2010 f150 lariat and hot air does not come out next to the driver, if it directs the air well in the different positions that the panel shows, but always cold air. I will solve by replacing the same part that you show in the video ?.

      You will need to replace the actuator that controls the temperature for the driver's side. Fordtechmakuloco has a great video for that. It is a very involved job to do properly.

    So, I just bought this f150 FX2.. when I received the truck, it had the same issue that you mentioned in the video.. the cold air is blowing through the defrost vents and the floor vents.. so I went to Oreily and got the dorman after market hvac door actuator, replaces it.. the clicking noise went away and when I pressed the top vent switch, the air started blowing through the top vent. I was very happy, to the truck for a spin.. parked at a gas station, came back and turned it back on.. the clicking noise came back and the air started blowing through the defrost and the floor vent again.. do you think it is because of the after market part or is there some other issue..

      I haven't had any luck with the Dorman part for this application. There is also a possibility that the climate control module needs to be recalibrated. What year is your truck?

Is there a way for me to share a picture of the diagram of the entire hvac system on this thread to help others that might end up having to replace the other 2 as well?

    I have a question maybe you had this happen too
    Mine is a 2009 pretty much looks the same but I replaced one behind the radio that everyone said was my problem but that didnt fix it
    My problem is that cold air will come out of the passenger side but hot air will come out of the drivers side and sometimes for what ever reason cold air will come out on the drivers side like it is working. I have mine set on auto but even when I do it on manual it stills sometimes blows out hot air when I want cold on the drivers side ?
    Do you think the part you replaced would fix my issue?
    I seen another video where there was something under the drivers seat?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  5 років тому

      Have you tried resetting the climate control system? With the vehicle off, pull the fuse for the climate control module (not sure which fuse it is on the 2009, but it might be #15 in the passenger side kick panel (SJB). Wait a few minutes, then reinsert the fuse. Turn the ignition switch to the on position, then turn on the climate control system. The system will then calibrate the mode and blend doors...this process takes about a minute.

    I just made the same replacement on my F150 2014 Supercrew and it still isn't working. I looked online and, per their suggestion, pulled the #46 fuse for one minute and still won't switch. Presently it's stuck blowing forward.

    Great vid! But I’ve read that you need to pull the fuse for one minute, re-insert it and turn the key to On for the actuator to recalibrate. So there’s no need to recalibrate this one?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  2 роки тому

      Yes, you can force calibration by pulling the fuse (Fuse 15 on a 2010), or by using a scan tool. In many cases, the system will figure itself out right away.

  • @matthewberry8194

    Does this mode actuator have anything to do with the AC seats? I am getting the clicking when changing modes but also noticed my AC seats on the drivers side isn’t cooling like it use to.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому

      Matthew Berry on these trucks, I’d say no to the mode actuator having any direct correlation to the cooled seats. Are you having an air flow issue to the driver’s seat? Do you hear the seat blower kicking in when you push on the seat cooler buttons? Also - when was the last time the seat filters were replaced?

  • @boofl941

    Question. My F150 has an issue, when I turn the heater on, it only works on the passenger side and nothing but cold air on the driver side. Is the actuator you installed in this video the one that controls that?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  2 роки тому +1

      No, the one in video is the one that controls where the air goes, nothing to do with temperature. The one you need is the driver’s side blend door actuator. To do that one by the book requires dash removal.

    The Recirc seems to float around on my 2010 F150 Lariat. Does this part control that as well?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому

      No, the recirc is controlled by another similar actuator - it is located in the passenger side footwell, above the blower motor. It's even harder to get to than the one in this video. I've personally worked on a few cases where non-functional recirc wasn't the actuator, but rather the recirc door itself. Just a few days ago, I diagnosed a 2014 F150 as having a broken recirc door...still waiting on the customer to approve or decline the repair. Not a cheap repair as the dash and HVAC box needs to come out.

  • @scorpio3x3

    Thanks for the video! Little to no info about the MODE problem out there, most seem to deal with BLEND door issues. '12 F150 FX4 and I've got hot and cold working as it should. I can select top, floor, both, etc and everything works. However, when I go from floor to defrost or top I get a clicking noise from the mode actuator. I always get 5-6 seconds when I start the truck as well. And just today, a couple of 2-3 second clicks when hitting rough spots in the road. Is that an indication the doors are fubar or is it just the gears in the actuator failing?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому

      scorpio3x3 It’s likely the gears in the actuator failing. They are just made of plastic. I don’t suggest changing modes (or even temperatures) if the blower is on a higher speed, it just puts more stress on the doors and the actuator gears. A poorly designed system - unfortunately not limited to Fords. Do you hear the noise if you shut off your truck with it in defrost mode, and start back up? If memory serves, these systems default to defrost on shutdown. You might be hearing the actuator trying to move from defrost to your last setting.

      You might want to pull the fuse for the climate control module for a few minutes (vehicle off), reinsert fuse, turn the key to the run position and then turn on the climate control system. Wait about a minute - you might even hear the system calibrating itself. I believe it's fuse #15 (in the smart junction box) for the 2010.

    My 2010 F150 is blowing air in all the correct vents. However the heat is not working on my left driverside but does work on the right passenger side. So it just blows cool air on the left side while the passenger side does blow hot air. The code its throwing is *B1081 Left temp Damp door motor*. Is this the same part that you have or is it a different part? Please give me any info can thanks.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому

      No, this is not the same part/location. Unfortunately, the left side temperature dampner door motor is a bit of a bear to get to, I don't actually have a video on this one, as I removed the dashboard assembly to get to it (would have been a very lengthy video). A good video on it (with the correct part number for that application): ua-cam.com/video/p5xvlbiaxF4/v-deo.html He does not remove the dashboard in his video, but it will give you a good idea where the actuator resides.
      I hope this helps!

      Behind RH kick panel (passenger side) fuse #46. After you replace fuse, put key in run position and wait at least 30 seconds before changing mode settings so it can recalibrate.

    I have a similar problem however the heat works on the left side of the cabin all the time, even when the dual control is set on Max AC. The right or passenger side operate properly both heat and Max AC. Will replacement of the actuator solve this problem or is it the blend door?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  2 роки тому

      It could be an issue with the driver's side blend door, or the driver's side blend door actuator (which requires dashboard and HVAC box removal). My video shows replacement of the mode door actuator, which is the one that directs the air to the various vents. It does not have anything to do with temperature regulation.

      Do you get any sort of air flow out of the other vents? Sometimes pulling the fuse (see video description) to reset/recalibrate the system will help. It may also require further troubleshooting with a scan tool capable of accessing the HVAC/EATC module.
