    I enjoyed it a lot. Could you please help with this question. Which one is correct of the following?
    (1) My hair is curly./ My hair are curly.
    (2) Her silky hair attracts me. / Her silky hair attract me.
    As per my knowledge, the first part is correct in both the sentences. Am I right, teacher?

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  6 років тому +37

      The plural of "hair" is "hairs". However, we use the singular form (which takes a singular verb) to talk about all the hair on a person's head. Ex: "My hair is curly.", "Her silky hair attracts me". You cannot say -My hair are curly- or -Her silky hair attract me.- But, if you want to talk about a few strands of hair, then you can say, "There are a few hairs lying on my desk and they're all curly". In this case, you use the plural form taking a plural verb.

    So good! BTW The term “laid off“, in America ,;is slightly different than being fired. In England they call it being “made redundant”. this would not reflect badly upon the individual and is often done because a company is downsizing or doesn’t have enough business for the amount of employees it has. People who are laid off may get severance pay and have an easier time getting unemployment pay. A person who is laid off may be asked to return to work when there is more work available. In industrial places in the USA, many factory workers are regularly laid off for periods of time only to come back to work again later. Sometimes the companies, like GM, give them money on top of unemployment and it’s kind of a vacation for them. However, being fired implies that the person has done something wrong and is unwelcome back to their job.
