I can’t help it but LOVE both Crystal and Harlow ! Crystal is an icon, a true legendary diva whose legacy will live forever and ever. She was stunning and had the right to speak her mind and truth and everything that came out of her mouth turned into gold - she’s the living proof that no matter how little screen time you have, a limited screen time can’t never diminish your star power ! And Harlow was breathtaking, a stunningly beautiful queen and a very sweet soul. Yes, I don’t think she deserved to win the contest, but it breaks my heart to see how many people trash her based on this (and as Crystal herself said, it was not Harlow’s fault that they chose her to win) or the fact that she looked “real” (and I think is funny how many people criticized Harlow for being “fishy” but can still live for queens like Tatianna or Farrah Moan). Anyway, I simply love both of them ❤️ And of course, I also love Pepper LaBeija 💜🤗
not only is this documentary significant for exposing many in the public to the drag scene, but also documents a very important time for the community, that being when the queens of colour became disillusioned with the racist pageant standards and broke away on their own. Was the house of Labeija formed after this?
This film was pretty much racist.... they didn't show CRYSTAL LABEIJA NOR PEPPER LABEIJA much....just very very very small clips of the real true beauties....
@Donice Chappell: Excuse me? It was black people who started and drove the civil rights movements, which inspired not only other non-white people in America to start their own civil rights movements, but other people of color all around the world. Saying that it "barely happened" is really ridiculous.
Brent Hagen so seem so cute. I myself wonder what happened to these Queens. I wonder if they had good lives. I wonder if they are in their 70s and 80s now and look at the present day Queens and are happy for them. I hope we never forget the people who went through so much so we may have the rights we have today
Rachel Harlow was dating Jack Kelly, Princess Grace of Monaco's brother at one point. Jack was an Olympian and famous in his own right. He wanted to propose to Rachel but his parents threatened to disown him if he did and he ended up breaking up with her.
I am a bit confused, what exactly was bad about Harlow‘s makeup? She looked like an actual woman. The one who lost her temper on the other hand looked like she was wearing foundation that was three shades lighter than her natural skin color. The pastel pink lipstick made it worse.
@@nukman09 Honestly, I don't remember exactly every moment of the movie. I do remember when they are hanging out in the hotel room out of drag it's one of the black queens telling his story about trying to serve in Vietnam.
She fully transitioned to female in the early 70s and dated Grace Kelly's brother. She ran a well known nightclub and restaurant in Philadelphia and as far as I know is still alive.
The most inconic part of this film is Cyrstal Lebejia's moment
She gave that lady a serious read💅🏾
“I have a right to show my color darling I am beautiful and I know I’m beautiful!”
Crystal LaBeija is the real Queen
Crystal really did look gorgeous in the pageant!

Harlow didn't even look happy when she won. It just got worse as Crystal read her to bits.
And to think this contest was 2 years before Stonewall. Queens that paved the way 🧡👸🏾
Harlow/Richard did transition in the 70s and she dated Grace Kelly's brother!
It’s so cool they filmed this. I didn’t know they did competitions like these back in the day

The whole 1st part of the film shows them out of drag.
