- In today's episode, I travel all the way to Sydney, Australia in search of the notorious BULL ANT. These infamously aggressive ants are known to pack a painful sting, but I wanted to finally learn about and observe these ants in the flesh, especially because Australian BULL ANTS first inspired my lifelong love for ants. Little did I know, in finally meeting them, I was in for a big, painful surprise!

It was an old method we used to do long ago.

To be clear, Bull Ants can see up to 1 metre away (just over 3 feet), so if you make them angry, don't count on being safe just because you've moved away from the nest.
No Aussie childhood is complete without at least a dozen or so bites from a bull ant or green ant. But seriously, how could you come to Australia and not tell us in advance for a meet and greet?!

It's so fascinating how they seem intelligent while looking at you and your hand, and interacting with the environment.

They actually can see you from about 15ft away or more. They have really good eyesight. Also solitary hunters, meaning they are significantly more intelligent than other ants.

He doesn't keep ant species that aren't native to his region - in case of catastrophic escape - and though he has (past & present) kept some invasive species, like fire ants, they're ones that are established as such where he is, not a totally new thing shipped from wherever. _But_ that's the personal policy he's expressed in videos and it may have changed or might do in the future, idk; I'm not him, of course! Just hoping to help out. Cheers. :)

As an Australian, i have taken multiple bites and stings from the jack jumper ant(Myrmecia pilosula) the bite is nothing but the sting makes you wanna fade into being nothing😂

Yes, but there's actually a type of Wasp that is flightless called the Velvet Ant, despite the fact they're not true ants but eusocial wasps.
@@user-wr1id5dz1tyou are right in the fact that Velvet ants are wasps. however they are not eusocial as they live solitary lives. in fact only the females are flightless and the males have wings to look for the females. social wasps are more the yellow jackets and hornets but there are many more species of wasps with many different ways of living and reproducing!

As an Australian, I've never encountered the black variety of Bull Ant before, but I've had some experience with the red variety. You learn very quickly to just leave them alone to do their thing and warn other kids to steer clear if they're in a playground setting.

It's a Jumping Jack, black body with yellow jaws is a clear indicator. He got lucky it didn't sting him, they are very painful and can take a while to fully heal.

Yes, this is exactly what they do. When we were kids my mate and I dug up a jack jumpers nest. I was fascinated with ants and I wanted to see the queen. Unfortunately for my mate, they performed a coordinated attack; they got all over him without him knowing and then sting him all at once. Funny looking back but it was scary at the time.

@@AntsCanada Also, I once trapped a red bull ant and a living cockroach together and watched them fight, the bull ant BIT OFF the roaches legs to immobilise it, as it couldn’t reach it’s body with it’s stinger, after it’s legs were gone, it stung the roach and killed it, I let the ant out but It decided that, before it went away, it had a parting gift for me, and the pain was.. beyond words

Wow! Those ants really stared at you! I'm used to ants that go about their business using scent and touch to find their way, so its a little disconcerting to find you being given the eyeball!
Bull ants are visual predators and actually have some of the best vision of all ant species. So they very much do see you and will visually track you.
Bull ants are a relatively primitive branch of the ant family, meaning that they're a lot closer to being flightless wasps than other ants. They probably branched off well before scent became as important as it is for most other ant groups, leaving them to rely more on senses that are useful for wasps.
I've been bitten by the red variety of Bull Ants.
As you found out, it is _not fun._
Ended up being a lot more careful when I found a colony of them on the property my family was renting some years later.
As for the other ants...
Those little black ones (which you tentatively identified as Chromatogaster) seem to be pretty much everywhere here in Australia.
I live in Western Australia, and I've got a colony of them that lives under the path in my front yard.

Btw the black species of bullant is myrmecia tarsata and they have ergatroid queens, the red species that you were probably thinking of is myrmecia brevinoda these are the largest species and can reach up to 3+ cm

I'm so happy you are having fun exploring Austrailian wildlife. It's so unique compared to some other places. I was an early fan of Steve Irwin's and when I started teaching Environmental Science he & Terri sent me an autographed and personalized picture for my classroom that says "Environmental Education Rocks!". It still hangs in my classroom lab today. He included a second, personal one that I had at home but lost in a house fire. HEY... I need to get something similar from you!!! ❤ Just like with Steve I've used video clips of yours in my lessons.

That is sooo cool! I'm sorry you lost the personal one (and no doubt many other meaningful items). I love Steve. I watched him constantly as a kid, not just for the cool action stuff, but because of his genuine kindness and love of nature. I still go back and watch old videos now, as an adult.

I know that ant species, so I was waiting for it to happen. Their common name is Jumping Jacks, because they will jump and bite you. Basically the worst ant in Australia to put your finger near because they will go for it.
Even as an australian, and using the metric system, I grew up calling them inch ants. As a kid, before knowing anything about ant keeping, my brothers and I grabbed a few with wings, without any idea the importance that meant.
I also caught a queen earlier this year and had it in a setup with fly screen mesh over the top, turns out they can chew through that...

These stings are very painful because the pressure from which the bull ants close their jaws is highly dangerous. I actually got stings at the age of 4 and it pained for more than 3 days. Best wishes hope so you will be fine 🤞
Its not the jaws its there venom from there stinger
The sting and bite are different. They sting with their rear and hold on with their jaws

@@pavelpospisil5918 Oh, they are very painful, and its irritation can last a week or more if you react badly to them. They can also cause a good amount of swelling in the area, especially if they sting you more than once, which if they latch on they will.

I grew up calling these “inch ants” and yes, their sting hurts. They’re very cunning and often have multiple entrances to their nests. They will attack you from behind if you disturb one entrance to their nest.

You missed an opportunity to experience the sting of the green ant in your video. They are legendary for their nasty sting. Ask any picnic goer. Leave a piece of clothing on the ground just about anywhere and you had better check it very well because there is a very high chance one has crawled in to investigate it.
Grew up with bull ants they are awesome creatures.
Their vision is indeed interesting. Especially since they (as ants) are related to bees/wasps....which require visual cues to locate nest entrance and food sources...and potential enemies.

It's great to see Myrmecias in their natural environment, and I've realised that the multi-entrance and wide-entrance varieties are typical of the type. At home (on my UA-cam channel) you can see the same thing happening. I had noticed that ants like to have a multitude of different nests interconnected with each other.

Got stung by one of these as a kid while jumping on a nest to stir them up. Never messed with Myrmecia again lol 💀 week of pain and a foot so swollen it wouldn’t fit into any shoe 😬 they don’t compare to any other ant here. Even now as an adult when I see them I’m extremely fascinated, but very cautious. They are charged up angry soldiers that’s for sure! Interesting seeing the different subspecies around my area in Sydney

No exporting ants is unethical. If they get loose they become invasive.

We have the red bulldog ants in WA. They are a big problem when you have a nest in your backyard
The res ones are everywhere. Red is the normal colour for bull ants. Black is a less common variety and they jump. Not a jumping jack but they still jump.
I'm an Aussie who is new to the channel, I found it through the vivarium series coming up in my recommended videos. I once had one of these suckers climb up the inside of my pants while sitting at my computer, and it waited until it got to my upper inner thigh before stinging me. My housemates got the shock of their lives as I jumped up screaming and ripping my pants off.
you can see how visual they are just in their movement. most ants dont "look around" and these guys are looking around as if they are a large mammal, stopping, turning their head in different directions etc. gives them this sense of higher awareness... spooky
Hah! Bull ants being chill! As an Australian, I can tell you, we'd be playing in the school yard at lunchtime, someone would trip on an inconspicuous hole, and then suddenly the ground would be swarming with angry bull ants. Usually we'd be alerted to their presence by somebody shouting in pain as they were stung. We'd have to run away, and when we went to first aid, the teachers offered zero sympathy, and just said in that accusatory manner 'What were you doing to provoke them?'
It wasn't on purpose! We just didn't see the nest there! They'd pop up seemingly over-night.
This species of Myrmecia looks like tarsata. We certainly have some beautiful species in Australia. Check out the bull ants I have on my channel to learn some more. Glad you came to Australia

Yeah. Bull ants arn’t too fun to get stung by… but they are amazing. I see loads when I go to Sydney and I can’t help wanting them as a pet.
That green ant is definitely a Green-Head Ant (Rhytidoponera metallica).
Those would have to be the calmest Bull ants that I have seen, usually a lot more aggressive, even more so when you go camping as a kid and someone accidentally puts their tent on one of the nests. lol. The queens are pretty damn huge also and their bite hurts like a mofo.

As a local, I can say, do not play with the bull ants. I've seen plenty myself, and they've definitely earned their reputation for being a nasty bite/sting. Though the ones we have down here are more bright red, less orange than fire ants, still really pretty, but best watched from a safe distance.
As a kid we called them inch ants and I used to love pissing them off. Accordingly I was stung many times

Yesss finally you've come to Australia. There are mounds here of bull ants that go above your knee.
The bull ant nests near me are interesting, because even though they are constructed from pebbles and twigs, which cover the ground everywhere, the nests are so tidy that they're still easy to spot.
The trick to know about bullant bites, is that they hurt like hell, but only for 5 minutes.Literally only 5 minutes. Then it’s gone. No residual pain.
Growing up near a Bull Ant nest I can tell you that nothing scares them, and if you piss even one of them off ALL of them will attack anything that comes near their nest for the next few days (they hold a grudge).

I believe this is myrmecia pilosula. Im sure you have a new found respect as well as love for these guys after getting pinched by those jaws. I got bitten and stung as a kid and always respected them since. Beautiful creatures. They take about 4 months from egg to ant, and queens can live up to 15 years. Pretty cool
There is a smaller bullant species that jumps a lot, they are my favourite ones. They are much smaller but way more aggressive, like chihuahua bullants 😂
this is myrmecia tarsata, given the size approx 20mm, yellow mandibles and red/gold colouration and the posterior end of gaster. Pilosula is much smaller and has very characteristic behaviour
A really interesting fact about bull ants is they are comparitavely less evolved compared to most other ant species. They still use their eyes and have very underdeveloped pheromones. You can see them watching you and reacting to your movement from metres away

Loved seeing some of our Australian ants. We call these Jack jumper bull ants, I believe probably Myrmecia pilosula. As the name suggests, these Bull ants jump at you when agressive.

I live on the west side of Australia and I saw a 2 inch red bull ant it was way to big I thought it wasn't a worker ant but a super major.
Awesome episode I'm a west Australian never seen those bullants they were beautiful. Over here it's the red ones and they are very smart at my work I trade mealworms for tolerance as they will chase you for getting that close, it seems to be working as they will take them out of my fingers and not bite or chase me off allowing me to observe them. Trick if you come back is blow gently down the hole It usually brings a good amount up to see what's happening, they are curious little buggers.

When I was in the Army Reserves here in Victoria these things used to get inside my sleeping gear at night and sting me , it was like getting cut by razor blades.

the one with the green colour at the start is an R. metallica (nasty sting). those bull ants are called jack jumpers and are know to cause Anaphylaxis, which can lead to death

For giant bull Ants (the legendary red ones) you might wanna head a little more south from memory, either that or come over here to Perth WA as we have a red variety that live in the clay soils.
I had a queen red bullant fly onto my balcony a few months ago. It looks like a devilspawn honestly with the wings and those large jaws
Wait till you come across Pyriformis, yes their vision can see you from quite a distance, and they ARE aggressive with almost no provocation lol

Was wondering if you'd been here and experienced our ants before, you just missed the insect expo here in Melbourne outer a weekend ago.
The Green Head ant you saw, or Rhytidoponera Metallica (there are a couple of sub species), are very popular, they are a gamergate species, can't scale smooth surfaces so are easy to contain, and have a little bit of a unique colony workup. Tend to dig a hole under a rock rather than dig full nests, and instead of gathering workers to their cause when they want to go out and do something, they just do it, and the others tend to follow without question. Similar to bull ants with the smooth surfaces, and in that they sting, quite nastily, just on a much smaller scale.
